Questions about "WRITE SAME failed. Manually zeroing."

Hi fellows,
I've already read this old thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=164377
but I have further questions:
ok, WRITE SAME feature should enhances performance on supported hardware.
But when I get this error, I must manually ZEROING the parameter to disable it or the parameter is already ZEROED, since it failed?
and a second question:
I get this error on an USB device. In the aforementioned thread this error appears with SATA.
How can I disable permanently on an USB device, since address depends on the USB port which change?
thank you

I have the same problem with kernel 3.19 (was not happening before) booting Archlinux from USB stick (Ventura ultra).
Plasma 5 start is now very slow. If I boot from another kernel (linux-rt) all is fine as it was before kernel 3.19 installation.
It seems to me that also X starting is too slow before  sddm login screen.
Using nvidia 340xx drivers (updated).
Some suggestions?

    Hi all,
    Since the last kernel upgrade on an headless server
    [2013-04-04 09:56] upgraded linux (3.8.4-1 -> 3.8.5-1)
    I get loads of these errors:

    sda3 is an ext4 / partition, on a 3ware hardware controller (RAID1). The awful tw_cli tool says it's everything ok:

    p1 OK u0 69.25 GB 145226112 WD-WMANS1886623
    I did not find relevant clues by googling.
    Do any of you guys know whether this issue is harmful or can be ignored? Since otherwise everything seems fine...

    Apparently, WRITE SAME is an optional drive feature that allows writing the same data to consecutive sectors of the drive. A search for "WRITE SAME 3ware" turned up an offsite (ie. not hosted by 3ware) 3ware manual that suggests it's only or primarily used during RAID initialization to speed things up.
    WRITE SAME seems to be part of the "SMART Command Transport" feature set, so a good first step would be to make sure SMART is enabled on your drives.
    Thanks alphaniner for pointing me there. This is the output of smartctl on one of the two disks in RAID1 (the other gave no error whatsoever):

    All the five errors in the smart log are "only" UNC errors on read: if I understand correctly, googling around, this could be a bad cable connection rather than drive really failing (a couple days ago someone worked on the rack where this server is hosted...).
    Anyway, the other drive seems fine and since this 2-disks raid1 unit is just the / partition (it's a plain arch installation, the server is a "number cruncher"; all actual data are in a separate 4-disks raid5 unit) I just backuped /etc for excess of zeal.
    For now I think I'll wait for the weekend for running long smart tests/badblocks and such.
    Any further hint or comment is still appreciated! Do you think it's time to replace the drive?
    Thanks,

  • "Write SAME failed" on VMWare 10

    Hello,
    I was trying to install Arch Linux on a VMWare 10 virtual machine but when I mounted the root partition (ext4) it printed: "Write SAME failed".
    How can I solve this problem?
    Thanks
    Dennis

    Have you searched the forums? A quick search gave me these:

  • "WRITE SAME failed. Manually zeroing." error during install or boot

    Hello everyone!
    Since the lasts kernels (I'm almost sure it happens since 3.9 because 3.8 worked fine) I can't boot on Archlinux anymore. This error floods my screen and I can't do anything, and because the new Archlinux iso (june 2013) comes with 3.9 kernel it now also happens during installation. Fortunately, I saved the may iso so I still can install archlinux and switch during install to LTS kernel but this is not a good solution. I can't find a solution online, some people have this issue but it seems to be a bit different everytime.
    I use Archlinux on a server, with hardware raid : Dell PERC H200a with LSI SAS2008 according to my BIOS. According to http://kernelnewbies.org/Linux_3.7, the WRITE SAME SCSI command "allows the same block to be efficiently replicated throughout a block range. Only a single logical block is transferred from the host and the storage device writes the same data to all blocks described by the I/O (commit)". Here is the exact configuration :
    - DELL® PowerEdge R210 II
    - 1x Intel® Xeon® E3 1220 V2
    - HDD: 2 x 1 To SATA2 RAID
    - RAID: Hardware, Dell PERC H200, (Raid 1)
    So my first problem is that I can't find online if my server is capable of this command (but I don't think so) and then the other issue is that I want to know if I can disable it. I found kernel patches for this issue :
    https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/1898441/ and https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/1982051/ (the first link seems to be a better solution).
    Then, I checked in the kernel source of 3.9 and I think that this patch isn't implemented (there is no device_write_same_capable function for instance). But kernel patching is not a really good solution, if I have to patch my kernel everytime the main kernel is updated...
    After some research, I found that my hardware RAID driver seems (I'm not sure) to be the kernel module "mpt2sas", so I checked both may and june isos of Archlinux and it's the same version (14.1) so it shouldn't be the problem.
    Does somebody can help me on this issue ? I don't really know what to do now.
    Thanks for reading, if I forgot something or if you want more informations, ask me!
    Bye.
    PS : My English isn't very good, sorry.
    EDIT : I found a part of the solution ! It seems to be an issue with the kernel that doesn't detect properly if my disc is capable of doing WRITE SAME command.
    So I have to write "0" in the file "max_write_same_blocks" under /sys. But the problem is that /sys is renewed every boot so I don't know how to make my changes permanent. I made a systemd service file, it almost works, but this solution isn't nice : the parameter is applied lately so errors shows at the beginning and this is not really easy to set up. I prefer a solution like "sysctl" but it seems that it only controls parameter under /proc/sys and not /sys, am I right ?
    Moreover, I tried two other things : Ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.9.4 works and Archlinux iso with 3.8.10 has max_write_same_blocks > 0 and it also works... So I don't really understand this issue. Maybe in 3.8 the parameter max_write_same_blocks has no effect (or not the same as in 3.9) ?
    Here is the systemd file that I made to reduce the issue :
    [Unit]
    Description=No WRITE SAME
    After=local-fs.target
    [Service]
    Type=oneshot
    ExecStart=/bin/sh -c 'echo 0 > /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.0/host0/target0:1:0/0:1:0:0/scsi_disk/0:1:0:0/max_write_same_blocks'
    RemainAfterExit=no
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    This is not a good solution, see my next post. I don't delete it in case you want to compare.

    I found a solution to disable the WRITE SAME command. That doesn't answer all my questions but it solves my issue. I was looking for a file like "sysctl.conf" but for /sys parameters : you already can do that in Arch, just create a file that ends with ".conf" in tmpfiles.d and add one line per parameter you want to modify. This file will be loaded early at boot.
    To disable it in an existing Archlinux installation, add in you file the line :
    w /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.0/host0/target0:1:0/0:1:0:0/scsi_disk/0:1:0:0/max_write_same_blocks - - - - 0
    Read the manpage of tmpfiles.d if you don't understand this line, it depends on your configuration and you can't copy it.
    Then reboot and no more error !
    If you want to disable it during the Arch install, just change directly the value you want in /sys. You have to do it at the beginning before mounting partitions, for instance just after choosing your keymap.
    Bye.

  • Question about 'write' statement

    Hi,
    A question on write statement.
    I have a internal table itab which has field var. I am looping at this itab and writing horizontal heading output like below.
    example on the output heading:
    (3 spaces) itab-var (20 spaces) itab-var (20 spaces) itab-var.
    the coding is:
    loop at itab.
    write: 3 itab-var.
    endloop.
    I want to increase the space by 20 for every loop. How to increase this 3 by 20? Can we accomplish this way?
    Thank you for your time.

    hi krishen,
    just add 20 inside the loop , so that after every loop its value increases by 20
    for example:
    data: v  type i.
    v=3.
    do 3 times.
    write: at v(20).
    v=v+20.
    end do.
    hope it will help you

  • Canon 6D Question about focus confirmation for manual focus lenses

    I am very interested in the 6D. I own the 5D2 and concerning IQ there won't be much difference. But the loud and shaky shutter of the 5D2, the silent mode of the 6D respectively, lower weight, better ISO and smaller size would make the 6D a better camera. If I could have wished I wanted an even more purist and smaller 6D, no video, wifi and gps, however.
    But I have a QUESTION: Will there be a focus confirmation on the focus points like the red confirmation flash there is with the 5D2? I like to shoot eg. with my small 40mm Voigtlander Ultron manual focus lens (just an excellent lens btw) and therefore highly appreciate this focus confirmation feature. If somebody already knows the answer, this would be very nice, thanks!
    I got the impression Canon disadvantages manual focus lenses on their bodies, especially with the 5D3's new autofocus system (which is superb for autofocus lenses). Therefore I wish Canon would offer a reduced to the max fullframe body for manual focus shooters (what is a real passion for a growing number of photographers). Manual focus shooters need interchangeable focusing screens, focus confirmation on the focus point and live view. I guess Canon could be successfull with such a camera: the Canon IQ, especially the colors are excellent, the handling of a Canon is better than other brands, the overall package one gets with Canon is very good. There are so many outstandig MF lenses from Zeiss over Voigtlander to vintage lenses with adapters that are seeking the best FF body. And DSLR's are better than mirrorless cams but need to become smaller to make the size advantage of mirrorless cams irrelevant.
    Thanks for reading, Dave.

    The Canon 6D arrived today in Switzerland. The focus confirmation shows on the focus point and works well with Zeiss glass. We get the same focus finetuning like we had in the 5D2, what is important to align our Zeiss lenses.  Besides, this is a nicely thought out camera. Smaller than one would expect from the factsheet numbers. The silent shutter mode is great. And there was a Hasselblad / Canon 6D comparison (beautyshooting), where I could not see a difference between the two on one of these big EIZO screens. The 6D is a reasonable camera, no show off factor. Better consider the 6D instead of the 5D3 if you are not a pro.

  • Question about initializing Calendar attributes manually

    Hi. I am setting up a Calendar object by initializing it's attributes like this:
    Calendar calendar = Calendar.getInstance();
    calendar.set(Calendar.YEAR, year.intValue());
    calendar.set(Calendar.MONTH, month.intValue());
    calendar.set(Calendar.DAY_OF_MONTH, day.intValue());
    calendar.set(Calendar.HOUR, hour.intValue());
    calendar.set(Calendar.MINUTE, minute.intValue());The problem is that when I run a test case where I create 2 calendar instances with the same attributes ie - both of them set to 2008, 02, 25, 10, 00, the equals() method does not return true:
    calendar1.equals(calendar2);    // Returning false, but have same attributes set as shown above
    Now, the other attributes of the Calendar instances make the two instances not equal. I created a utility method to test just the attributes above for equality, and that works just fine.
    My concern now is the after() and before() methods of Calendar. Can I rely on these to be correct based on what I see from the equals() method? I have ran several test cases with the before() and after() methods (testing with instances initialized differently), and they * seem * to be working as expected, but now I can't be sure... If not, how should I properly initialize the calender instances to make sure that I get the proper behavior out of the before(), after(), and equals() methods?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for your reply. I am still not getting a true return value from the equals() method. Also, I made the modification you suggested with setting the month. When I do calendar.get(Calendar.MONTH) I always get back one less than the actual month. I have read that this is because the months are zero based.
    Why wouldn't the Calendar class return 2 if I pass it a date with February in it? Is this just a bad design decision by the creators of the class?
    Thanks.

  • Question about "(authAuthority) index_param failed (18)" error LDAP Log

    After a couple months of working through many 10.5 OD problems (now 10.5.2 on Mac Pro) I've worked out most and only have the following error in LDAP Log
    Apr 23 18:31:29 crashdummy slapd[102]: <= bdbsubstringcandidates: (authAuthority) index_param failed (18)
    I know its not a critical issue and everything finally seems stable but I'd like to check know what's going on.
    I tried indexing authAthority in slapd_macosxserver.conf with equality, substring, and presence directives with no change. (using slapindex after unloading )
    One issue might be that the authAuthority attribute on computers and users in LDAP has 2 entries, ApplePasswordServer and Kerberosv5.
    I'm new to Apple environment, so I'm not sure if this is normal.
    Should there be only one entry?
    I can delete ApplePasswordServer and still everything works OK including Home folders on an AFP share.
    So I'd like to know if anyone who doesn't get this error has only one entry in authAuthority attribute..

    I think you need to keep ApplePasswordServer in there if you want to be able to support authentication without Kerberos, like when ticket has expired.
    I currently have the same issue. As I understand this is not a serious warning but I'd still like to resolve it and stop cluttering my logs. I've tried changing LDAP mappings between "From Server" and "Opend Directory" and adding the value to conf and indexing, as did you, but this doesn't seem to have any effect. I'm also seeing occasional ipHostNumber failures.
    It very well might be a bug in the software because indexing doesn't resolve it. I've looked around but there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer.

  • Question about starting Oracle 9i manually!!!!

    Hi friends,
    I am a student and a newbie in Installing Oracle 9i Database.
    At the installation I choose the Oracle Enterprise Edition and choose also that the Installation wizard
    automatically create a DB.
    My problem is, that Oracle starts up every time I boot up my machine.
    Now my question is: How can I configure Oracle that it don't start every time I boot up the machine??
    I would like to start up Oracle only if I want it so!!
    So how can I do this???
    I hope that somebody of you guys can help me!!
    thanxx

    1) Go to Start ` Settings `Control panel `
    (admin tools if you use win2k)` Services
    2)find out the serive like OracleServiceYOURDBNAME
    double click that service and choose startup type to manual
    this will make your database to stop starting automatically.
    3)when you want to start manually
    go to command prompt type
    set oracle_sid=yourdatabasename
    sqlplus /nolog
    connect / as sysdba

  • Question about writting a cutom component

    I have an area in my application window (0,0 to 500,500) in whcih I do all my drawing. underneath I have a bunch of boxes I drew to represent buttons. Now in my draw area I wish to always display the exact mouse cursor x,y coordinates. But to use mouseEntered, it has to be attached to a component. Is there a way to define a custom component for my draw area, so that the area throws the mouseEntered event? Is there another way of fixing the problem?

    this is how you would do it with a custom component.

  • Question about VB OracleConnection

    Hi all,
    I would like to open an OracleConnection in my VB code and then call another vb function (in order to maintain good modular programming standards) within the same program using the same oracle connection whenever I try this I get a no connection open type of error.
    So just to be clear, can I pass the connection between sub procedures and functions in order to not have to open and close a bunch of connections?

    Sen,
    Your question seems to be related to one of your previous postings in the Measurement Studio for Visual Basic Discussion Forum. Whenever you have further questions about the same issue, instead of posting a brand new question, you can simply add a "Comment" to the reply you got (by clicking on "Comment on this answer"). Here's a link to your previous posting where you can do this:
    how can i control the DAQ directly from VB
    Besides, you'll have a better chance of getting an answer in the Measurement Studio for Visual Basic Discussion Forum since the question is related to that product.

  • Hi All, I have question about the iMac operating system. I have the last updated. The problem when I manage the place of the folder windows they are all mixing up. I mean they not on the place where I left them. how to set they stay on the same place. Tks

    Hi All, I have question about the iMac operating system. I have the last updated. The problem when I manage the place of the folder windows they are all mixing up. I mean they not on the place where I left them. how to set they stay on the same place? I know there are different possibilities to set.
    I tried but it not helped for me. What I can do? How and where can set this they stay on their place?
    Thanks.

    Option 1
    Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
    This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Question about using multiple iPods on the same PC

    I've read the FAQs on this subject but I still have a couple of questions about multiple users with separate iPods using the same PC.
    I want to use my family's desktop (A new Gateway with Vista, if it matters) for my new iPod Classic, but my father already has an iTunes account on there for his iPod. I know I can create a new user account on the PC and move iTunes to a shared folder so that we can share music, but will this second account be able to purchase music from the iTunes store or am I going to have to switch between Windows User accounts to make purchases and then move new songs into my separate iTunes account via the shared folder? Will it be its own separate iTunes account (separate user name, separate credit card used, etc.) or will it just be a second library that's dependant on the first?
    I want to be able to have my own iTunes account, make my own purchases in it, and maybe occasionally share tv shows or something with my father.
    If this can't be done, would I be better off just creating new playlists for our two iPods from the same library, or creating a second library on my Father's account?
    Also, if I want to access things I've purchased from iTunes on this desktop in iTunes on my notebook, will I be able to?
    I hope that made sense.
    Sorry if these seem like silly questions. This will be my first iPod as I'm really excited about the 160gig and want to know if these things are possible.
    Thanks in advance for any help

    Hi, Wes.
    Congratulations on your new iPod Classic and Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    For no particular reason, let's answer your last question first ...
    ... if I want to access things I've purchased from iTunes on this desktop in iTunes on my notebook, will I be able to?
    The iTunes Store operates on a one download per purchase policy so you will have to copy the purchases from one computer to the other and make sure that you authorize the laptop to play the songs.
    As to your first question ...
    ... will this second account be able to purchase music from the iTunes store or am I going to have to switch between Windows User accounts to make purchases ...
    Whatever XP User Account you are logged in to doesn't really matter. What's important is which Apple Account you sign in to ... yours or your Dad's or - if you had my Apple ID and password - The Mimico Kid's for that matter. You can sign in to any Apple Account on any XP User Account. Or any computer for that matter.
    Where the XP User Account comes into play is that it will determine where on your computer the purchases are downloaded. Files will be sent to the iTunes Music folder as specified in the iTunes Edit menu > Preferences > Advanced tab > General sub-tab. Default settings will have a different location for each User Account - C:\Documents and Settings\ user name \My Documents\My Music\iTunes - but if you've read this article in the Apple Knowledge Base, you will know you can change the location of the iTunes Music folder in each XP Account to a common location such as C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\iTunes.
    Post back if all this hasn't been as clear as mud and you need anything clarified.

  • A lot of questions about my MacBook Air

    I am really new to re-using Apple computers.The last time I used an Apple computer was back in 1987 when the school and my family had Apple IIGS computers. I have been using PC's which reqiure Microsoft. I a lot of have questions (10 questions) about my MacBook Air and I hope you good people can and will help me.
    Product: MacBook Air
    Operating System: Mac OS X Version 10.7.4
    1) I Downloaded MacKeeper because I was fooled. I had a bad feeling just before I Downloaded it and I should have listened to my heart. However, I didn't buy it or fully Install it. It was like a test run and then they wanted me to pay almost $100 for it. Thankfully, I didn't because I read it is Malware. I spoke with an Apple Tech at Apple Care and he helped me get rid of it (or so we think). I don't see it anymore on my computer. I read it can slow down your computer. How can you tell if it's really off of the computer?
    2) When I open "Finder" and I see that there are people Sharing my computer with me. I went into AirDrop and it reads, "Other people can see your Mac as (my name) MacBook Air when their computer is nearby." I bought a HotSpot and while it's turned on and I selected it as my WI-FI connection I thought it would  get rid of these people, protect what I type, me, my items, computer, etc. But it didn't.
    I didn't know that I have to buy a exteral CD and/or DVD Player in order to connect to the brand new Modem and Router in one by NetGear. I am so used to PCs and the CD/DVD Players being built inside.
    The people at Apple Store told me that there is an internal modem inside, but I don't know how to find it and what to do then.  Should I use a Firewall?, An AntiVirus, AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, etc. Apple Care tech told me I don't need to get an AntiVirus.
    3) Is there a new kind of Wireless Modem and Router that doesn't require a CD-ROM?
    4) When I travel or fly and I am not close to home I was told by Best Buy and Sprint that I had to buy a mobile HotSpot to use the computer (WI-FI) safely. As I typed, I have one. But it's pretty expensive and only gives me 1 hour and 15 minutes per day to Stream. What can I do to use this computer safely Online when I am out of range from a Modem and Router? What do people do when they travel on airplanes?
    5) This compter won't let me use "Raid." I think you have to have a newer version. I hard about Raid on the radio from Leo (can't recall his last name) who's a Tech expert.
    6) Should I buy a ZipDrive? Apple Store Tech told me that I didn't need a ZipDrive. I just remember the episode of HBO's "Sex and The City" when Carrie looses everything because her copy crashed. Now, of course, I know that's a fictional show, but with PC's and Microsoft I have lost everything when it crashed, frooze up, etc. I know there's iClouds. I heard about Carbonite, but I have read the Pros and Cons about it. Mostly they are Cons about it. I just don't want to do anything wrong and mess up this computer.
    7) Should I buy a new Printer/Copier/Scanner because mine is an HP. It's not new, but it works. I even have a CD-ROM for Macs. What about the new product called, "Neat"?
    8) Is there a special product that I should buy to do Online Banking and/or other important stuff?
    9) I saw and read about iWork in the Apps Store and it sounds cool. I still have alot of friends and colleagues who still use Microsoft. Is iWork good to use? Should I Download it from the Apple Apps Store or can a buy it at Apple? Is there another Word Processing Program that is great and user friendly and will work with Macs and PCs?
    10) Should I Update the OS with OS X Mountian Lion Pro from the Apple Apps Store or buy it at Apple Store?
    In advance, I wish to thank you in this Apple Support Communites for your help.  Have a safe and happy holiday weekend!

    1) Here are instructions for removing MacKeeper. Since it mostly consists of manually looking for folders and specific files, if you follow the instructions you either fail to find what you are told to find (because your AppleCare guide gave you complete instructions which you followed) or you'll find some additional files that need to be replaced.
    2 & 3) I assume you are looking at the sidebar of a Finder window and seeing Shared and computers under it. Those are computers that you can potentionally share. To do so you'd need an account on their computer and a password. They are not sharing your computer.
    AirDrop allows you to create an adhoc network for filesharing and it only functions when you have selected the AirDop item in the SideBar. Actually doing that merely announces to computers in the same network node that your computer is available for a file to be sent to. Even then you have to explicitly allow the file to be downloaded to your computer. Similarly you'd be able to see other computers with AirDrop selected and be able to send them a file - which they'd have to accept.
    The only reason your NetGear Router comes with a CD is to install and run their 'easy' step by step configuration program. It can also be done manually with a browser. Read the manual to find the IP address you must enter to access the router's configuration menu. Apple's WiFi routers don't require a CD to install the software because the configuration software is already on your computer.
    I do have my firewall turned on. AntiVirus software isn't a bad idea - I use Sophos having tested it for a review for our local User Group and I found I liked it better than ClamAVx which is what I'd been using before. Both are free.
    4) I think you were scammed by Sprint and BestBuy. I use hotel, coffee shop, and restaurant WiFi spots and have for years. However, because they can be unsecured, I do not shop online or bank when I'm using them. I also use 1Password and don't reuse passwords so even if a sniffer should grab an account and password that's all it would get - one account.
    5) Raid doesn't really make sense with a MacBook Air - a RAID involves 2 or more disks being used as if they were one.
    6) Zip drive? No. External hard drive - yes. It isn't a question of if a computer's hard drive will malfunction, it is when. OWC has a nice selection of external drives and the Mac has a built in backup system called TimeMachine. Due to the way TimeMachine works, I've found that your TimeMachine drive should be at least twice as large - and preferably 3-4 times as large as the data you are backing up.
    7) if your printer works and it has Mountain Lion drivers, why replace it?
    8) Online banking is done with a browser - Use Safari or FireFox
    9) If trading files with Windows users is important Mac: Office is your best bet. If not, iWork, Mac:Office, or LibreOffice are all good possibilities.
    10) you can only buy Mt Lion via the App Store.

  • Shopping for a T61 - questions about the OS and various h/w options

    Hi,
    I am considering buying a Thinkpad T61, but it's been a while since I have bought a computer, let alone a laptop, so I thought I'd ask a few questions here.
    I have worked on several Thinkpads T-series at work before, and I liked them, but they were all provided to me by my employers.
    I am browsing the different models on the Lenovo Canada web site; the US site looks just the same.
    The use I would make of the computer is typical office work (Word, Excel, e-mail), synchronize data with a PDA, Internet browsing, some limited web (PHP) and image editing (Paint shop pro), and listening to digital music. On occasion, watch a movie on DVD.
    I don't play 3D games.
    I would use the computer with a docking station and an external keyboard, LCD monitor and mouse when I am at home.
    I am looking at the T61 models with 15-inch widescreen, integrated graphics and no mobile broadband.
    1.) Operating system: obviously, Vista is recommended by Lenovo, but I have heard so many negative comments on this OS that I wonder if I shouldn't stick to XP. Even on this forum, I see posts about problems with Vista. Any advice on that?
    2.) I already have a license for XP on my previous machine. Assuming I buy the Vista with this one, then I would legally have the right to install either system on it, right?
    I know the machine doesn't come with an install CD, but if I get one somewhere else, would I be able to install it, or does the OS come with some weird DRM system that will prevent me from installing another OS than the exact copy of the one that was shipped with it?
    I ask this because I'm fairly certain that I will want to change the way the system partitions are set up.
    (this might sound like a silly question, but the acronym DRM became so prominent in recent years that I want to make sure)
    3.) The website says that some T61 machines come with an integrated camera. Later on in the detailed descriptions, I don't see it mentioned anywhere. Which do and which don't come with the embedded web cam?
    4.) 15.4 WXGA TFT vs. 15.4 WSXGA+ TFT : what are the resolutions of each?
    5.) Hard drive: I would go with a 7200 rpm model. Is there any benefit to getting the 1GB drive cache?
    6.) DVD recordable option: how fast does it record CDs and DVDs ?
    Thank you in advance.
    Chris.-

    Hi Kevin
    about the speakers I cannot advice.
    Regarding the driver - if there is a driver update availabel from TOSHIBA (important!!) then use it! That means they have found some kind of bug in the original driver and released a fix for it. I do not recommend you to use the nVidia generic driver since it might make the PC behave bad. StandBy / Hibernation might stop working properly. Power consumption might go up....and so on.
    Regarding the BIOS. The BIOS'es are a special chapter - when upgrading the BIOS the machine re-writes a very special part of the 'hardware' (actually it's a software installed in a chip that does not go away when you turn the computer off, it is sometimes also called firmware). That firmware is needed (among other things) to get the machine to start and load the operating system.
    If the re-write process fails it could mean that the firmware is not able to start the machine anymore. And if the machine does not start at all, you will have no chance to retry writing the firmware. So that mean the machine will be dead and you will not be able to do anything about it except turning to an ASP and possibly pay for the service.
    So, that said, it is very important that you have a realiable powersupply (which you normally have with the AC Adapter) and that you make 100% sure that you use the correct BIOS-file.
    If you can accomplish those 2 small things there should be no problem upgrading the BIOS.
    BR
    Tom
