Questions from a future macbook owner

i would like to get a mac. either the normal macbook or the macbook pro, but i wanted to know if buying the pro is worth the xtra money. based on GHz, hard drive and memory/RAM, is it worth it?
if it is, which is probably the best deal? the $1,999, $2,499 or $2,799 one? is 2.4 GHz a huge difference from 2.5 GHz? is a 200GB memory a huge difference from 250GB?
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=br owse&node=home/shopmac/family/macbookpro
also, is the pro easier to upgrade than the normal macbook

That's really a question of preference. I think you should visit a store http://www.apple.com/buy/ and feel for yourself which one can do tasks you need better.
Advantage MacBook Pro:
1. The MacBook you have no option for glossy versus matte display, whereas the MacBook Pro you do.
2. The MacBook has no Express/34 slot. With that you can add EVDO, and SATA/II cards.
3. The MacBook has no backlighting of keys.
4. The MacBook has a smaller screen.
5. The MacBook Pro has more peripheral ports.
6. The MacBook Pro has a faster processor and a faster dedicated graphics processor.
Advantage MacBook
1. Its internal hard drive has instructions from Apple on how to replace.
2. It is slightly lighter weight.

  • Question from a future apple TV owner

I'm looking at buying an apple tv soon but I have a question. I have a 500GB HD in my MacBook with plenty of room to store movies. How well does apple tv do with streaming files wirelessly over a network to my MB? Should I even bother spending the $ to get the bigger 160GB apple tv? I'd like to just buy the cheaper 40GB HD but I'm wondering if it's "glitchy" streaming over a wireless network.
    Anyone have any advice?

Thanks capaho. That's what I meant, streaming from itunes.
Basically I'm trying to find out I even need to spend the extra $ on the bigger 160GB ATV. Since I have tons of HD space on my MB.
I have 3 40GB AppleTV's and 99% of the time streaming works perfectly - some stream wirelessly (Netgear n router) and others via mains plug network adapters.
Interference form my microwave can disrupt wireless but I can't change the laws of physics!
If your wireless is ok, then it should work fine.
There's really no advantage of 160GB over 40GB when streaming especially if your library is larger than 160GB - if you want to have stuff on AppleTV to use when computer is off then 160GB is more versatile.
You probably know but iTunes has to be running to stream to AppleTV as it actually does the streaming - AppleTV cannot access the data directly.

  • Questions from a new MacBook Pro owner

Hey everyone! Just a few questions.
    1. My friend has his Mac set up so when you double click the top of a window, it minimizes. How do I set this up?
    2. Can I mak Safari (and other windows) fit the whole screen, so there isn't black bars on the sides?
Thanks! I'll probably have more questions later.

I will try to answer your questions:
    1. Go to system preference --> appearance --> then you will see an option to double click title bar to minimize.
    2. You can drag the window to maximize safari and it should "learn" this preference though I have a bookmark titled resize that I click on that maximizes my window. If you add a book mark and make the address this: javascript:self.moveTo(0,0);self.resizeTo(screen.availWidth,screen.availHeight) ;

  • Future Macbook owner. Need advice.

Hey guys. I'm a graphic designer who uses all of the Adobe programs including Flash. I want to buy the blackbook and put in the 2gig memory, with the 120hd. Should I wait for the core 2 duo or should I just go to the store now and get MB? I don't want to wait too long, I just need some advice on what to do, since most of you here know more about Apple. Also has anyone have any experience in running the design programs on a macbook? How do they run?
    Commodore 64   Other OS

However, being a graphic designer myself, I
PERSONALLY would go with the MBP. Based on the fact
that it has a bigger screen, more graphics memory and
    comes stock at higher specs.
I totally agree. Get the MBP right away. You won't be sorry. I just upgraded from a MacBook to a MBP and love it. It boots faster (under 30 sec.) than my MacBook with a 7200RPM drive in it. The screen is larger and much better quality, along with the sound. It's also quieter and runs cooler to the touch than my MacBook.
Don't get me wrong, the MacBook is a great computer, but the thing that bothered me the most about it, was the graphics circuit sharing memory. If I started doing something graphic intense, the fan would start ramping up. One 3-D app I have causes the fan to run wide open all the time. The MBP is almost totally silent.
BTW..you can get an education discounted MBP for as little as $1799.00--and that includes 1G RAM and a 120 GB hard drive.

  • A few questions from a future user

    Hi!
I am going to buy a MacBook soon. How soon depends on a few things which I hope some of you can inform me about.
    1) Will there be any changes to the MacBook when it is delivered with Leopard? For instance, will I be able to get more RAM, a bigger processor or something like that?
    2) Is the first version sold of Leopard without any flaws? And if not, will there be updates available on the internet?
    3) What is the price of Leopard when it's released (in case I choose to buy a MacBook now with Tiger)?
The problem is that I'd like to wait until it's delivered with Leopard, but on the other hand I need a laptop for the end of this month (university).

    1) Just so you know, we can't speculate on future product releases on these boards. It's safe to say, though, that revisions are frequent enough, and a new rev could always ship out around the time Leopard comes out, but no one can say. Keep in mind that the top-end laptop is the macbook pro and that all revisions of the current macbook have been relatively minor, apart maybe the jump to the core 2 duo chip.
    2) Again, speculation. This thread will be locked down if I answer, and I wouldn't even be saying anything helpful. I'll personnally be buying Tiger when it comes out...
    3) 129 usd
Inevitably, the longer you wait, the bigger the bang for the buck, and that's true for all computers. If you need a macbook now, as it seems, get it now. It's a pretty solid little machine and Tiger is very stable. If you need the higher specs, go with the Pro.
    Happy shopping,
    cheers

  • Basic questions from a new mozaic owner

I have some very basic questions about how to use the new mozaic 2G mp3 player. I bought the Mozaic because it has a speaker and sleep timer, but I'm finding it to be much harder to use than other mp3 players that I have had (Ipod shuffle, clix etc). This may reflect my failure to look in the right place but I have to say the "help" section isn't much help.
    Here goes:
. I download podcasts to listen to during my morning run. WMP provides an easy to find place in its program, "recently added," which allows the user to just work with those files. As near as I can tell, Creative makes you wade through all of your tracks. Is there some way to create a file to which "recently added" tracks, or specific tracks, can be dumped? How about automatic tagging of these added files?
    2. I have several thousand pictures on this hard dri've. Apparently, the Mozaic Centrale
Is going to copy all of them, which strikes me as a waste of space. Is there a way to shut this function off? I couldn't care less if a single photo was added to the centrale program (or whatever it's called). Is it really going to duplicate all of the jpg files?
    3. I have the Zen Stone plus speaker which has served me very well. I had similar problems working with whatever Zen was calling its media player and wound up using WMP instead. I"d like to take a run at using the dedicated Zen media player....
I apologize for the basic nature of these questions, but the answers weren't obvious to me from the materials I was able to locate.

what exactly is the model of your Mozaic? Is it EZ 00, EZ 300 or plane ZEN Mozaic?

  • Some question from a new N97 owner

    Hi all,
So I just got my new N97. I have a few questions:
    - Configure home screen: So far I can add 2 shortcut bars (each can contain 4 application). I want to add more short cut bars, is there anyway? In the selection list when choosing the bar item to place on the home screen, there is no "shortcut 3" item.
    - Screen saver: So far my N97 locks key and screen becomes black and locked very fast (about 10 seconds) no matter how I try to change to settings. Actually there is nothing displayed (back screen) at all. And to wake up, I have to use the lock/unlock slide on the side. Is this normal? I can't touch the screen to wake it up? I got to Menu > Settings > Phones > play with settings there but no use. Do I need an application to have the screen saver feature? Is this a device flaw or do I have to change settings somewhere else?
    Thanks in advance.
    -Caten

hmm i have a n85 as well hence my response to you in regards to the screen saver. yes it shows those options but eventually it does go all black. unless i missed something with my phone. which is possible as i no longer use it as my primary device. the only option right now for you to customize home screen is to wait for n97 app MyPhone that hopefully will soon be released for your model. nokia phones have never nor will they ever behave in a iphonish fashion hence no possibility to set apps up as you would like. n97 is full of customizations just not exactly how you would like them to be who knows perhaps with future updates it will become even more flexible but for now its either that or waiting for MyPhone to be released. sorry.
ps. i am greatly surprised that n97 would not have a screen saver options at least similar to the n85 that worries me as i am also awaiting arrival of my brand new n97. so hearing all kinds of news makes me a bit concerned about this new phone. time will tell. sorry i dont have anymore news for you.
You know what I love about you the most, the fact that you are not me ! In love with technology and all that it can offer. Join me in discovery....

  • Questions from a hopeful logic owner

To start, I've got a lot of VST's. These VST's are installed on windows.
Aside from the fact that most of these have .exe installers, let's say that I manage to get the .dll's off of a windows machine. Can I then put them on a mac and wrap 'em? Will the VST work the same after wrapping?
I was searching around and couldn't seem to find a definitive answer on this subject.
    Also, what's a "Mac VST"?

You're actually going to run into an even bigger problem, which is that, if memory serves, after version 5 in OS 9, Logic stopped supporting VST. When Apple bought out emagic, one of their first major changes was to switch the program to the AU standard (Audio Units) which are supported system wide as opposed to in specific programs. There are some advantages to doing so, but it hurt the compatibility for a while. You'll find that most of the well known plug-ins, like Waves and Native Instruments among others, are available in both AU and VST, often on the same disc now. There are programs to convert VST to AU plugins, and I've tried with some success to do so, but it often fails.
Now, to your original question, my understanding is that it is theoretically possible to convert your VST plug-ins for mac, but it probably wont work with all of them. Then the ones that work would have to be converted to AU, which again, probably won't work with all of them.

  • 2 questions from a new Mac owner

    Hello everyone,
I just recently purchased my first Mac (Macbook Pro) and am really enjoying it. I have 2 questions that I cannot seem to find an answer for.
1: Is there a way to reverse the FN keys ( I dont like having to hit FN + F9 to use expose, i hardly ever use the those keys except for volume). Is there a way to make it so when i press the keys i get the normal key and if i want to use the features of the key hit FN + Key? I cant find any way to do this, weird because the documentation for Leopard never mentioned anything about me having to hit FN+F9 etc to use the features
2: Whenever i reboot into bootcamp and start to play a game, the notebook fans start going crazy and it heats up considerably fast. I usually stop playing after half an hour out of fear i will overheat. Is this normal behaviour for this to happen or could there be something wrong with my notebook?
Sorry if these sound silly, I am new to all this

    1. I don't think you can since the keys serve two purposes. However, an intrepid programmer may have written a utility for that sort of thing. One never knows. Search at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
    2. Yes, that's normal because Windows does not have any fan control implemented. I don't think there's a solution for this common problem.

  • A Small Question From an Inexperienced MacBook User

Hello everyone, hope all is well...
I have a small (but perhaps big) problem that I was hoping someone could help me out with...
I routinely use the erase free space function in disk utility (about once a month) and perform a seven pass erase on the "untitled" disk. The other day, I was playing around with my MacBook and decided to reinstall Mac OS X. I put the first installation disk in, and before getting started on the process, I went into disk utility and erased both the "untitled" disk and the disk entitled "74.5 Hitachi HTS542...". Then, I erased the free space on the "untitled" disk. Well, when the procedure was almost done, I suddenly got a message saying that there was some kind of internal disk error. I was not sure what had happened so I reinstalled everything and then did the same thing described above again - and, once again, I got that error message!
I finished the installation and started worrying. Did I damage something? I asked a friend of mine what might have happened and he said that erasing free space actually slightly damages your computer because it reduces the overall amount of memory your computer has. This small damage, he said, was the reason I received the error message.
Can anyone else give me some advice? Is it true using disk utility in this way damages your memory a bit? If so, how can I fix it? My friend said the damage is irreversible. Is this true? If so, just how much damage do you think might have occurred?
Some feedback on my problem would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again! I look forward to some replies!!

To launch Disk Utility from my install disk I have to put the first of the two installation CD's that came with my computer and go to Disk Utility but then quit after I'm done so that it doesn't go through the installation procedures, is that correct?
Yes. Boot with disk 1, select your language, and when the menu bar pops up, select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Also, once in Disk Utility, what do I do to repair the disk? Do I go to First Aid and then click "repair disk permissions"?
Yes. You select the underlying volumes on your internal HD, click the First Aid tab (should be the default, if so, no need to click), and click repair disk. When that's finished, without errors, quit Disk Utility (no need to check permissions). If you get errors, repeat until they're gone or DU reports that it can't fix them. When you're finished, quit DU, select Startup Disk from the Utilities menu, select the internal boot volume, and click the Restart button.
Also, why is it necessary to do this while starting up from the Mac OS X installation disc?
Because you can't repair the disk you boot with.
I don't think I have the Apple Hardware Test program - where can I get that?
Read the two disks carefully. There should be a note (upper right-hand corner) that states to boot with the AHT, you hold down the D key.
    …what is Disk Warrior?
Best disk utility for fixing disk directory errors. See http://www.alsoft.com/ for details.

  • Questions from a future FCE User

    Hi,
I am considering moving to FCE from the iMovie 08 and HD6 arena. I shoot with a Sony SR11 and I am not happy with the iMovie08 importing and converting. From what I am gleaming form this forum it appears that FCE can convert the AVCHD clips.
When FCE converts the clips what format are they brought in?
I assume that they are deinterlaced, but how?
I hope someone can point me in the right direction. There are a lot of things I like in both iMovie products, but I want better quality from my final product. My output will be both SD DVD's and Blu-ray in the near future.
Thanks in advance for any input.

Would I get better results from FCE than iMovie 08 in terms of less combing or other artifacts?
iM08 drops on import any 2nd line of video.. so, the material transferred TO iDVD has less resolution, which is technically spoken less quality.. but also avoids combing due to 'lack of information'..
my experiences with HiDef material in iDVD is: superb!
but, HiDef could be 'too sharp' for the 'standard' resolution of any videoDVD... you probably noticed that on serif fonts in titles.. tiny lines start to flimmer .. it depends on the 'intelligence' of the encoder, how it handles such sub-pixel details, how it blurrs such details.. you'll reach somehow the capabilities of a 20$ app as iDVD , but for 95% of consumer needs, iDVD and 1080i-input is an excellent combo.

  • Basic time machine question from a new mac owner

Hello. I have an icon on my computer that says time machine and when i select the open time machine preferences, it takes me to my set up for my airport extreme.. is this correct or is time machine something additional that i would purchase to set up?

Thanks for the star and no problem, I would recommend that you get yourself an external drive though for backup. With any computer not having a backup system is gamble and sooner or later you will lose. If you do decide on a TM backup drive it would be wise to get one that has Firewire or Firewire 800 connections (for speed) and it should be about 2x the size of your interal drive if possible. Once you connect one TM will automatically back up your system and continue to back up every hour only backing up changes and addtions. So for example if you keep music and pictures and are continually adding material to your computer those are memories that you don't want lost if your machine has a failure, TM will help prevent that from occuring. It is one of the coolest features of Leopard. Two pieces of good news, TM is simple and external hard drives are fairly inexpensive these days.

You can only transfer purchases from iTunes on the iPad into iTunes on your computer. If you bought the music from another source, you need to use the source app to transfer the music, or you need a third party app to transfer the music.

  • All future MacBook with 10.7 Lion will be set to 64bit kernel by default always ?

    Dear Apple and Mac Expert,
Actually I hope Apple can answer this if possible or someone can redirect me to any Apple post ?
I learned that right from 10.7 Lion available, the default kernel mode is always set to 64bit no matter installed in MacBook White or Pro. I am wondering is it same for all future MacBook Air and Pro that come with 10.7 Lion will be set to 64bit kernel by default??
I really need a confirmation on this to support my future plan.
Appreciate Apple can answer this or someone can help.
    Thanks in advanced!

Apple typically does not answer questions here. Further, your question invites speculation about future product releases, which is specifically forbidden in the Terms of Use for these forums.
That having been said, Apple usually looks forward, not back. Once they remove something it is usually gone forever. Witness the floppy drive disappearing in the late 1990s.
    Best of luck.
