Questions from a perspective MBP buyer

Greetings, I'm looking to buy a 15" MBP and have a few questions. For those of you who use a MBP, how do you deal with large iPhoto files and very large iTunes files? I have large databases for both, plus a very large documents file. with laptops having such small, by today's standards, hard drives, how do your organize your stuff? I'm assuming you use external storage, but do you split your files? I would like to keep my music on the MBP hd, but maybe my audio books and video files from iTunes on external media. Do you keep a version of photos, but not all? How well does Final Cut Express/Pro, or Final Cut Studio run on the MBP? Aperature? Also, I was thinking of using a 23" oe 30" Apple monitor with the MBP. Does anyone have that configuration, and if so, how well does it work?
Thanks, Scott

Scott,
iPhoto will want everything in one place, but that place could be an external drive. You could keep your iPhoto library on a separate drive, and there are some drives that are quite portable (have a look at the Firelite series).
iTunes, however, will allow you to split your library up a bit. Using this function takes a bit of forethought, and then some subsequent management, but it can be easily handled. For example, you could use the default location for the iTunes library (on your internal hard drive) to import your "core" stuff, then tell iTunes to use a different location to store any new imports. This second location could be on an external drive. From that point on, any new material that you import goes to the new location.
iTunes will still show you items in the secondary location, but will not (cannot) give you access until the external is available. It will live with this arrangement happily, unless and until you choose to "consolidate" you iTunes library. At this point, it will attempt to copy everything to the currently set location.
All of the apps that you mention run very well on a MBP. Also, they push the external displays with ease, in any one of several configurations. If you are definitely going to be using it with an external display, I suggest you go for one with upgraded VRAM.

  • Questions from a prospective MBP buyer

    Hey all,
I'm going off to college next month, and my dad decided that I needed a laptop before I go. He and I looked into it, and we agreed that I could get a MBP. Thus far, I've decided on the 2.0Ghz 15.4" model, and I want to upgrade it to 1Gb (2 x 512Mb) RAM.
Due to a couple of factors, I was wondering about some of the other options I should choose. I'm going to be double-majoring in Informatics amd Biology, so I'm going to be doing computer programming on it, as well as other school-related tasks. I'm also somewhat of a gamer, but not a completely hardcore one. Also, this will by my first Apple computer. Based on those things, here are my questions:
    1. Hard drive size. As I said, I'll be an Informatics major, so I'll have to have a number of school-related programs loaded for class. I'll almost definitely load up Boot Camp once I get the MBP so that I can play some of my favorite PC games, and have two or three recent games loaded on the computer at a time. I will also probably use GarageBand for personal music recording purposes and iMovie for recreational stuff. Also, my music collection is under 3 Gigs. I'm wondering if I'll be fine to just get the 80Gb hard drive, or does it sound like I need a larger one?
    2. Display type. My second question is whether I should get a glossy display or a matte display. I know that glossy has better color quality, but suffers from glare, and matte has less glare but less brilliant color. My first instinct is to go with the glossy because I like the sound of the color quality. I realize there are discussions dedicated just to this topic, so feel free to skip this question unless you feel that there is an obvious choice based on the information I've given.
Sorry that this is kind of long, but I wanted to get those couple of things cleared up. Thanks in advance to anybody who takes the time to help.

Sorry, too many typos, rewrite: The hard drive is not an actual 1:1 ratio in terms of usable space. My 100gb 7200 drive has an actual capacity of 93.16. Following basic installation with modest programs such as Office, Filemaker and a few utilities, etc., I currently have 71gb available. You may very well be fine with something less although your field of study may require some hefty programs. Also, MP3 files, Windows and associated core software will eat up your available drive space sooner than you may think. Now, you may be just fine with only 1gb of memory for now, but again, your science core software may be better leveraged with additional RAM. If you want to lower your initial acquisition costs, then let that be your guide although I wouldn't recommend a drive smaller than 100gb.

  • A few question from a contemplating "user/buyer"

I am very interested in purchasing the AEBS w/ modem and an airport card for my G4 PowerBook. I did have some questions as I contemplate this purchase, and I apologize if this has been covered somewhere else:
    1. I'm still only using a dial-up connection to the Internet from home (56K). As I understand it, using the AEBS to connect to my ISP should not add an additional performance hit to the connection speeds?
    2. I also use a WIndows Mobile 5.0 PDA and was wondering if I could share the Internet connection with my PowerBook through the AEBS. Connecting through GPRS is frustrating at the best of times and if by having this AEBS I can add faster web connections for my PDA, I would be thrilled to bits.
Should add that my PDA is an O2 XDA Atom in case that makes a difference.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer!

BlueButch, Welcome to the discussion area!
As I understand it, using the AEBS to connect to my ISP should not add an additional performance hit to the connection speeds?
The AEBS contains a 56k modem for connecting to dial-up ISPs. The wireless network has a theoretical bandwidth of 54 Mbps which is about 1000 times as fast as dial up.
...and was wondering if I could share the Internet connection with my PowerBook through the AEBS.
Your PowerBook running OS X can share the internet connection from AirPort to Ethernet if so desired.
Connecting through GPRS is frustrating at the best of times and if by having this AEBS I can add faster web connections for my PDA, I would be thrilled to bits.
Is 56k dial-up faster than GPRS? Usually not.

  • A question from a good chance buyer

this ain't no deciding factor but is there a way to charge the batteries for the 14" externally without the iBook because i would enjoy this info since i'm in my basement alot on the couch with no close power outlets and i would enjoy the convience of a second battery ready to go that is charged.
does the battery have an on-board DC input or are there any companies that make something for this kind of thing.

  • Very important Battery Question from a prospective Mac buyer...

    Hi, guys!
I am thinking of purchasing a Macbook Pro and just read that the battery is sealed-in. I know that I am able to buy a replacement battery, but I would also like to find out if I can still use the Pro even after the battery is broken?
I have no problems with only being able to use the Pro when plugged into an outlet, but is it possible? Can I still use it in Plugged Mode even if the battery is long gone? Or do I really need to have a working battery in order to be able to use it (plugged or not)?
Im a bit strapped for cash so I just wanna make sure to cover all bases before making a purchase.
    Thanks!

I think it's pretty much been covered with everything. You have 2 options:
    1) Buy a replacement battery once yours is dead.
    2) Don't buy a replacement battery and work off the mains.
And if you find out your processor is too slow if you go with option 2, then switch to option 1. You may be strapped for cash now, but if you save pennies for the next five years, you'll cover it. Probably if you do get five years' life out of your battery, your Pro will be an old 'just in case' laptop by that point anyway.
You might want to research how you can make your battery life last longer as well. Like how charged up you should keep your notebook, whether or not to drain the battery completely and for how often etc. Can't remember the MBP's battery type off the top of my head.

  • Two questions from a perspective Mac Book Air purchaser . . . .

    1) How warm does the computer get after extended use? I saw one review that the reviewer said "it was a delight to use in your lap." The Mac Book Pro is use gets too warm to sit in your lap after about 15 minutes.
    2) It was my understanding that it is impossible to boot from a hard drive connected via USB. What then do you do when the internal drive fails or gets corrupted? Is there some kind of unique connection to the Air external Optical drive that allows it to boot from it? I back up all my Macs by cloning the drives to external firewire drives so that if there is an internal drive failure, we can boot from the clone and be back in business. Is this not possible on the Mac Book Air?
    Thanks
    GFB

you can boot from a drive connected via usb, whether it be a usb hard drive with a bootable clone, or the MBA usb superdrive.
I know because not only have I read it, I have done it. I love my MBA and use a WD Passport usb drive to clone and backup the MBA. I did the bootable backup via CarbonCopyCloner. I have the MBA usb superdrive and did an experimental OSX install from the Install disc on a second partition that I created with that disc without erasing the first partition. Both worked.
I use the MBA primarily on my lap on the sofa -- no heat problems. Just follow directions and don't set it down on pillows or cushiony soft surfaces that block the heat exhaust vents on the bottom.
It is too easy to use on the lap, why bother sitting at a desk or table.
    Yup, luv the air.

  • Few questions from a first time buyer

Hi, I'm planning on buying the iPod Nano 5G with birthday money (it would be my first iPod) and I have a few things about it I need to clear up first. (I'm not sure if this is on-topic, I didn't know where else to look)
    1. Is it durable enough so that I can just stick it in my pocket and go, or does it require a lot of care to use?
    2. Can the volume go up really high (for both headphones and the built-in speaker)? I don't want to ruin my ears, I just have a lot of quiet songs in my collection.
    3. How many hours of video can you take at a time? Also, can you play back the videos right on the iPod?
    4. Can you watch movies and TV shows from Amazon Video On Demand and iTunes on the iPod? If so, does it support HD movies?
    Thanks!

    Hello evil_klonoa,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
    1. Is it durable enough so that I can just stick it in my pocket and go, or does it require a lot of care to use?
Yes. It may also depend on what you are doing while the iPod is in your pocket. If its just walking or everyday moving around, you should be okay. I do it all the time.
    2. Can the volume go up really high (for both headphones and the built-in speaker)? I don't want to ruin my ears, I just have a lot of quiet songs in my collection.
Yes, both the internal speaker and headphones are and can get quite loud. If your music is still too quiet, there may be a couple of ways around it.
    3. How many hours of video can you take at a time? Also, can you play back the videos right on the iPod?
You can record a video as long as there is still space left on your iPod Nano as well as battery life. And yes, you can play it back right on your iPod Nano if you wish.
    4. Can you watch movies and TV shows from Amazon Video On Demand and iTunes on the iPod? If so, does it support HD movies?
Yes, as long as they are in an iPod compatible format. And no, iPods do not currently support high definition videos.
For more information and such about the iPod Nano, see it's *User Guide* which I provided below.

  • Questions from a first time buyer.

I've been recently told by my sound design lecturer that I should get a macbook, as it it practically a requirement to work in the sound engineering bussiness. So I have a few questions:
    1. Will the cheapest macbook be able to handle protools running alongside reason without crashing. My college has an non core duo G5 and I crash that frequently buy using large amounts of reverb units.
    2. when do new macs start coming with leopard
    3. I heard that if I bought a mac this close to the leopard release date that I would get a free upgrade if my mac didn't come with leopard. Is that true?
    4. My College lecturer got a lecterers discount when he bought his macbook (pro)
any kind of discount available for students?

Probably since your instructor recommends it. One thing to think about the cheapest MacBook does not have the superdrive for burning dvd's. That is the major downside for what you may be doing in school in buying the cheapest one.
    3. I heard that if I bought a mac this close to the leopard release date that I would get a free upgrade if my mac didn't come with leopard. Is that true?
Unless you see it officially announced on the Apple site don't believe the rumors. Also depending on where you buy the MacBook it may not have Leopard installed on it even after the release date. This happened with iLife 08 when vendors still had stock in house that iLife 08 was not on. Be sure you are getting Leopard when you buy your new MacBook. Just a precaution, better safe than sorry.

  • Why can't I post a question from my new system?

    Hello All:
I was just trying to post a question from my new mbp but it wouldn't allow me to do anything.  It continually gave me a message highlighted in 'red' that i was;t allowed to modify or post anything.  I've been asking questions for quite a while and have never seen this.  I also happen to have my older bmp, also logged onto the 'Apple Discussions' site, open beside me.  Can anyone explain this to me please?  BTW, my new system obviously has Yosemite on it while my older bmp has Lion.  Thanks in advance, to all those who respond.

ChitlinsCC, I'm adding your reloaders to my article on how to make using ASC easier.
Here is my ASC work flow...
    1) I login.
    2) Block the automatic 30 minute logout.
Unless you do something every thirty minutes you get logged out.  The forum software waits to tell you this as long as it can to keep you in suspense  ;-) . Filling out a reply is the exception to the thirty minute window.
            Start an auto reloader.
    Safari = SafariTabReloader
Firefox = ReloadEvery: "Reload web pages automatically"
Others = Reloaders | Cerberus - Support Center
You need to pick a page that will reload over time without stalling out. It's ASC.  I've found my profile display the best to use. I get my Profile page after some  logins.  It's ASC.  Change rccharles to your apple id.
    https://discussions.apple.com/people/rccharles?view=discussions
    Reply technique
Open a new browser window.  Pick some discussion.  Open a reply window.  As long as this reply window is open, you will stay logged in.  The 30 minute times is reset as needed by the ASC software.
    3) I open another window to do my normal ASC browsing.
    4) I have a FireFox bookmark to goto the discussions that I have participated in. I've modified it to add on the content stuff.
turingtest2 recommends. Change rccharles to your apple id:
    https://discussions.apple.com/people/rccharles/content?filterID=participated~obj ecttype~objecttype%5Bthread%5D
    5) Use turingtest2's generated links with the /content suffix as browser bookmark to the ASC discussions:
Site map of Communities and Categories
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2463
    6) Adjust the ASC web page layout.
    For FireFox
I run with Hiroto's modification to user content.  This is the only way these forums are readable for me.  How to adjust the format and layout of ASC Web Pages:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-7501
    For Safari
"ASCPowerTools is a Safari Extension designed to give more control"
    http://www.etresoft.com/ascpowertools
    7) Read and answer my old posts.  I kind of memorize the time I last posted. ( It's way bad that apple eliminated the last poster to a thread. )
    8) I use tabbed browsering.  From a list of discussions, hold down the command key then click on the link. You get two tabs this way. The original window will keep where you have been.

  • DB Design Question From A Novice

I need help in structuring the code for a javabean that I'm writing. Basically, I want to have the bean run several different types of DB queries (e.g. "check username and password", "list the groups that the player is in", "list player attributes", etc).
The approach I started taking (out of simplicity) was to write a new method for each type of query I wanted to run. In other words, I wrote one method to "check username and password" and another to "list the groups that the player is in", etc. However, I noticed that this caused a lot of repeating in the code (e.g. con.createStatement(); and stmt.executeQuery() for all these methods). I posted this question on a different forum and someone suggested writing a generic method (that takes a String parameter containing a database query) and putting the output into a Vector object and returning that to the calling method. My question is: "is this the 'common' way of doing things?" Another question is, "are both approaches acceptable?" Personally, I think it seems a little easier to use the approach I started using but, I have to admit, all the repeating code troubles me. I'm learning this on my own so I don't really have someone to ask in person about this. I'm looking for the advice of someone with some experience in these matters. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

    My question is: "is this
the 'common' way of doing things?" Basically yes. There are variations but the general idea is the same.
You might want to look at this...
    http://java.sun.com/blueprints/corej2eepatterns/Patterns/DataAccessObject.html
    And this....
    http://java.sun.com/blueprints/corej2eepatterns/Patterns/TransferObject.html
    Another question
is, "are both approaches acceptable?" Your original approach would become unmangeable in a larger application. But other than that yes.
    Personally, I
think it seems a little easier to use the approach I
started using but, I have to admit, all the repeating
code troubles me. And the repeating code, from the perspective of learning, is probably a good thing to a certain extent. It allows you to recognize patterns and thus question alternatives. And then when you move on to something else more sophisticated you will understand why it better/appropriate as opposed to someone who just does it one way without ever understanding why. (And for small applications you do use exactly the method you are doing rather than using more sophisticated and thus complex solutions.) Additionally you are more likely to be able to more quickly debug applications because you will be able to seperate out core problems relating to the database versus problems that are related to the intermediate layers.

  • Continue to backup to an existing Backup File on TimeCapsule from a new MBP

    Hi,
I had a MBP and I was using Time Machine and Time Capsule to back it up. I also copied all my files from my 'house' onto an external hard drive.
I bought a new MBP. I copied the files from the external hard drive onto the new MBP and started using my new MBP happily. However, I realize that I am no longer backing up to Time Machine with my new MBP. I would like to pick up from the old Time Machine backup from my old MBP and carry on.
Is this possible or do I have to wipe the old back up on my Time Machine and start over? I am worried there are files on the Time machine that I may not have manually copied over from the external hard drive.

    natmac wrote:
Oh. That's a real bummer. I purposely didn't use the backup from Time Machine because I was worried it was going to transfer over any weird preferences and glitches from my old mac. I've had my new mac for over a month now. I don't think I can figure out what's missing and revert back to an old Time Machine back up.
In that event, you have some choices:
How large is your TC's internal drive, how much empty space is on it, and how much is on your new Mac? If there's enough room, you could keep the old backups for a while, and let TM make a new set for the new Mac. Answer "Create New Backup" when you get the prompt in #B5 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). That will make a separate +sparse bundle+ for the new backups, and you can delete the old one when you're sure you don't need them anymore.
Do you need more than the last backup from the old Mac? If not, you could erase the drive you had the temporary copies on, and restore either the entire backup or just your home folder to it. Then erase the TC's internal hard drive and let Time Machine start fresh. You won't be able to restore from the data on the external, but you can copy from it.
If you do either of those, connect via Ethernet if at all possible -- it will be much faster than WIFI.
If it's USB and large enough, you can "archive" the TC's internal disk to the external. Erase it first, then connect it to the TC. See #Q6 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Capsule+ forum).
Then erase the TC's internal HD and let Time Machine start fresh. You'll be able to access the copied backups via the +*Browse ...+* option, whether it's connected to your TC or directly to your Mac.

  • HT201272 I have recently picked up an Apple TV. When I go to the movies tab, there are less movies available there than there are in my i-Tunes account. I've done some looking around at questions from others, but haven't found an answer that works for me.

I have recently picked up an Apple TV. When I go to the movies tab, there less movies available there than what is available in my i-Tunes library. I have 38 movies showing in my library but only 23 are showing in the Movies tab on the Apple TV. After researching this a little, there are only 23 movies showing under Purchased in the Quicklinks of my i-Tunes account. The majority of my collection are digital copy downloads that came from DVD purchases. Some of the missing movies were added in the past couple of months, the rest are a year-or-so old. I have done some looking around at questions from others, but I have not found an answer that will fix my situation. How do I update my library to get ALL of my movies to reflect that they were "Purchased"(as it says they were in their Properties)?

  • Leopard forgets color profiles when waking from sleep on MBP Santa Rosa

I have a 15" MBP Santa Rosa with a 22" Samsung external monitor. I performed a clean (erase and) install on my machine. Upon waking from sleep, the computer seems to have forgotten the color profiles loaded for the displays. To correct this, I open system preferences and then the display option. As soon as the display options are shown on the window, my MBP loads the correct profile. This has happened for both displays, though far more frequently on the external display. The profile for my Samsung was created using color calibration hardware/software but the MBP display is running the stock profile from Leopard.
Any thoughts? Has anyone else experienced this?

same issue here. also had it in tiger, but much more frequently in leopard. seems to be whenever my display wakes from sleep.
MBP 2.4 GHz SR purchased 6/07. also driving samsung 245bw external display (which has never been affected, unless perhaps my calibrated and default profiles aren't different enough for me to notice--the difference is severe on my built-in display).
