Questions from a possible convert...

My sad story: I used to run Gentoo, and honestly, I loved it once I finally got it installed on my Dell laptop. Then my screen went out. It was a hardware problem, but Dell wouldn't even look at it unless I reinstalled windows and removed Linux. So now, after getting the screen replaced, I'm back to square one, and really don't want to spend the next few days compiling Gentoo again.
I've heard lot's of good things about Arch, but I haven't found answers to a few of my questions yet:
1) Is Arch like Gentoo in that once it's installed, you never have to reinstall again? Just keep updating?
2) Does Arch have all the little device drivers and things that are needed for laptop support?
3) Does Arch use the 2.6 kernel "natively" yet?
4) Are all of you as patient and nice as Gentoo users?

I don't quite understand your first question. Arch uses i686 optimized binary packages. On Gentoo you can optimize any way you like, but I don't think you gain anything from that except that you can run on older hw. The fact that Arch has a focus on keeping the system simple and not run unnecessary daemons is what makes it run faster than some other i686 optimized distros.
To create a new package you can use /var/abs/PKGBUILD.proto as a basis (you may have to run abs first). Reading the install guide and man makepkg should get you going. There are also wiki pages on the topic.
CVS builds are possible. Here's an example for waimea-cvs. Note that makepkg is what you build packages with, not pacman.
Arch installs packages for both grub and lilo by default. I guess that makes it kind of bloated

Actually, the answer to (1) is a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter, if the iMac to be purchased is a 2009 model.

If the iMac is a 2008 or earlier model, then it has a mini-DV port, so you need a mini-DVI to DVI adapter.
For (2), if you boot Windows using Boot Camp, your iMac is basically a Windows PC, so you can do anything you can do on a Windows PC (including being vulnerable to Windows malware). You may also want to consider using WMware Fusion or Parallels Desktop, which allow you do run Windows under Mac OS X as a +virtual machine+.
For (3), if the file formats are the same for the Mac and Windows versions, you should be able to do it.
For (4), even if Mac OS X computer have 10% market share, that is still tens of millions of Macs in active use around the world, and growing. And they are mostly computers being used as real computers by real users, not as point-of-sales terminals and other specific business purposes, which makes up a large portion of Windows-based computers (computers that do the same thing over and over again and have a large IT staff for maintenance). So I would say the forums not being overrun with problem posts individual Mac users is a good indication that the vast majority of Mac users are happily computing without any major problems.

Airport Extreme question from a possible buyer....

I was thinking about buying an Airport Extreme so I can wirelessly backup to my hard drive for my macbook. The price I can deal with, don't worry, but here is my question:
Can I use the Airport Extreme with my current router?
Currently, I am using a BT Home Hub (v1.0) with a belkin router (with the DHCP not set to give out ip addresses) which extends my network (perfectly) and gives out the same ip addresses the Home Hub does.
Can I replace the Belkin Router with an Airport Extreme? This is so I can extend the network and share my hard drive so that all mac users in my house can backup.
For this to work, I need to be able to disable DHCP on the Airport Extreme and insert my LAN ethernet cable into the WAN port (is that right??) and hopefully the Airport Extreme will send out the same network that the Home Hub does.

Reason I am asking is because I don't want to fork out loads of money on an Airport Extreme, only to find out it doesn't work and be really disappointed and have wasted £120!!

Hi James,
I use a similar setup, usually without any problem. The last week has been a different story though, both in function and in Apple's responsiveness to problems. I would recommend reading the thread here before making the purchase. At the very least, it would be a good idea to wait until Apple acknowledges the problem and brings a fix forward.

Getting imac, few questions from a PC convert

I am getting an imac that has tiger installed on it. I have a PC and have backed up all my important documents and music on an external hard drive.
If I do decide to start fresh and install leopard, after it is installed what is the process for moving music over? Is it as easy as drag and click?
As far as Time Machine goes. After I move my infomation over, then do I format my external hard drive to run Time Machine.
Any help, pointers, etc would be great as far as this whole process. I just don't want to loose all my music and information. Thanks again.

Well, Yes. The same as it would be with Windows really.

Yes, it must be formatted using the HFS+ File system (you can use disk utility in Applications/utilities) to work with Time Machine. Note that without third party software Windows will not be able to read the drive once it is formatted as HFS+. You will need to format it again in FAT32 or NTFS If you wanted to use it with Windows. (This can be done within windows if you didn't have a mac handy and the situation arose)
And, of course you will need to install Leopard as Time Machine is a Leopard feature .

That might be bad news. My company actually assigned an engineer to buy every USB to COM converter he could find and test them all with as many apps as possible. There were many models that were problematic. You might need to just try another brand (or two (dozen!)).

Question from a Newbie wireless user

Please excuse the naivete of this question. I'm completely ignorant on everything pertaining to wireless internet. My old Powerbook 400mHz G4 Titanium has never had wireless of any kind until this week when I bought a PCMCIA wireless adapter. Never used wireless, don't know anything about it.
I started following the instructions on the PCM adapter this morning to get it all set up. I plan to toggle back and forth between wired internet at home and the wireless adapter when I'm out on the road.
I was surprised when I saw the window where I enter my settings that there were no less than ten different internet services flying around the room in my house! I guess I have a lot of wireless neighbors and I could easily access their bandwidth.
I imagine the same would go when I'm in town sitting in the library. They welcome you to use their internet access, but it's in a busy end of town and I'm sure I'll see numerous services available there too.
So I'm clueless on this topic. Again, I've never used wireless internet before - but I've read about these guys who've been arrested in front of coffee houses for stealing bandwidth at WiFi hotspots when they weren't paying customers.
What's the deal with sitting in your living room and using your neighbor's internet access? I know it's not ethical and we should all get our own, but what are legalities? And say I hopped on to someone's internet access +quite accidentally+...how does one get caught if you do it quietly? And have people actually gotten into trouble beyond these two guys that made national news?
I guess my main question is exactly how careful do I need to be to set the correct access service when there are ten immediately available in a public place? Can I just click on whatever signal is strongest and log on without fear of being caught?
I hope somebody knowledgeable can set me straight on this.

Can TV show episodes downloaded from iTunes be converted for my non-ipod mp3 player? It's made by Creative Zen and does have a video converter to get files into the right format, but is there something about iTunes TV episodes and their encoding that would prevent this?

In answer to the 2nd part of your question,yes, the files are protected which make them only compatible with iPods, iPhones, etc.

I' ve got some SPFILEs to test with COMPATIBLE=11.1.0.0.0 on a 11gR2 (11.2.0.0.0) database.
Is there ANY way (pfile from spfile + editing + spfile from pfile seems not working) to chiange the COMPATIBLE parameter to 11.2.0.0.0 in the original SPFILEs?

M4A/Chapter Streaming - question from a professional radio station

My name is Jason Wohlstadter and I run Proton Radio (www.protonradio.com).
We've been broadcasting into Quicktime via Shoutcast for the past four years in MP3 format. We'd like to start broadcasting in m4a format to utilize the awesome Chapter Tool that Apple released, which would allow us to specify what tracks are playing in the large 2-3 hour solid DJ mixes we air.
My question: Is it possible for the chapters to be utilized in a stream? They work fine in a download medium like a Podcast, but when we tried opening the .m4a files via a stream the additional meta data was not displayed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Miscellaneous - Questions from a Newbie

I just got my iPhone this week and some questions popped up. I know that some of them might fit better in other categories than "basics"...
1. Sync with Outlook - I was under the impression that the iPhone syncs up with Outlook but:
a) How can you mark an Outlook Appointment as "privat" so not everyone in your company who has access to you calender can read it?
b) Why are no documents synced, which are in a Calender Appointment save in Notes? (The Text in Notes will sync, but no PDFs for example...)
c) When I reply to an E-Mail, the info that an when I replyed is not saved in Outlook
d) in Outlook I can mark e-mails with priorities... this is not shown on the iPhone
e) can the Auto-reply or Out-of-the-Office message set or changed from the iPhone?
2. Mail
a) I have differnt E-Mail accounts and would like to use different signitures for each account... the is an App, but thats too complicated. Is there a way to have an automated signature for each acount (this should be a basic feature!!!)
b) Can I save e-mail attachments in specific folders? (eg a word doc)
3. Media
a) How can i created different Folders in the photoalbum, so I can sort them and don't have to scroll for ages...
b) Can I get access to the Folders on the iPhone, so I can copy (for example Music) for differnt sources to the iPhone?

d) Can I delete Apps which I don't use (eg. Weather, Stockmarket...), but which are allready installed when i bought it

No. You can't save attachments - just view them

No. The iPhone cannot be directly accessed like a hard disk. There are third-party apps that allow this to a certain degree, but you can't add Media to the iPhone via this method.

Not really. There's some that may do some features, but not a complete replacement for it. What's wrong with iTunes?

Quite possibly. Battery life seems to be reduced in the latest firmware and lots of people are awaiting a fix from Apple.

Here's a little more information on what I am trying to do.
I have a desktop computer with 4tb worth of pictures that has Lightroom and Photoshop on it. I also have a laptop with Photoshop and Lightroom. I would like to be able to edit those same pictures with their current edits that are currently on my desktop on my laptop. If this can be done, I'm sure I need to be on the same wifi network for my laptop to be able to access my desktop's photo library. I am technically savvy enough to map a network drive, but how do I get my two Lightroom catalogs to sync when I make a change on one of my computers? Would i be working only on one catalog? Or two separate catalogs that would need to be manually synced to the other computer? Would it be beneficial to put my lightroom catalog on something like dropbox?
I'd appreciate any information or tutorials if someone knows how to do this.

I do this by having my LR catalog and photos on an external drive that I swap between the two computers. I am on Windows and have the same drive letter assigned to the drive on both computers.
Because the photos are on a portable drive I back up the portable drive to another hard-drive every night or after important work, because portable drives are susceptible to damage or loss.

Why can't I post a question from my new system?

I was just trying to post a question from my new mbp but it wouldn't allow me to do anything. It continually gave me a message highlighted in 'red' that i was;t allowed to modify or post anything. I've been asking questions for quite a while and have never seen this. I also happen to have my older bmp, also logged onto the 'Apple Discussions' site, open beside me. Can anyone explain this to me please? BTW, my new system obviously has Yosemite on it while my older bmp has Lion. Thanks in advance, to all those who respond.

1) I login.
2) Block the automatic 30 minute logout.
     Unless you do something every thirty minutes you get logged out. The forum software waits to tell you this as long as it can to keep you in suspense ;-) . Filling out a reply is the exception to the thirty minute window.
        Start an auto reloader.
Safari = SafariTabReloader
Firefox = ReloadEvery: "Reload web pages automatically"
Others = Reloaders | Cerberus - Support Center
You need to pick a page that will reload over time without stalling out. It's ASC. I've found my profile display the best to use. I get my Profile page after some logins. It's ASC. Change rccharles to your apple id.

Reply technique
Open a new browser window. Pick some discussion. Open a reply window. As long as this reply window is open, you will stay logged in. The 30 minute times is reset as needed by the ASC software.

Hello. Today I downloaded then transferred some songs from a YouTube converter to my desktop then into my iTunes Music. I then synced my iPod Touch to get them on my iPod now all of my other songs are gone! How do I get them back?!

Hello. Today I downloaded some songs from a YouTube converter. I selected the songs I wanted and tranferred them from my desktop into iTunes. I clicked on "Music", which I believe is where ALL of my other songs that I already had on my iPod, should be. But they're not. They're all gone! I tried logging out and searching my original songs I had in the search box, but nothing shows up. Only the songs I had transferred from the YouTube converter are displayed in my iTunes music, and I don't know how to get them back. I also tried syncing and restoring my iPod back from iTunes Backup but that didn't work, either. I don't know what to do! Please help!!

When you do a sync iTunes will only transfer the music you have selected. So you want to make sure that you select every song to sync.
