Questions in Lync 2013 Pool failover behaviour

Hello Team,
Please let us know answers for the below questions:
If
Pool A fails over to Pool B in disaster mode.
Then the original front ends for Pool A are recovered successfully, and services start. Is it expected that  User Services, Conference services and CMS would continue to backup via the backup service for pool A routing Groups,
back to their original Pool A servers for the fail back? Or does the fail back, obtain all information from the SQL databases / the pool A user groups in Pool B? Is Pool pairing inactive after a fail over has occurred?
MANY THANKS.

The Failback will sync any changes that were made while users are running on Pool B.  My understanding is that Pool pairing resume once Pool A was back online and attempt to sync the data ahead of the actual Pool Failback command.
Have a look at this preso for more details - http://bit.ly/120Ogls  View the powerpoint in presentation mode and you will see that when Pool A is repaired, mirroring operations resume even though Pool A users are
still running off Pool B.
Of course the devil is in the details so I would test this out if you can and observe behavior and queuing the health of the pool mirroring process.
Hope this helps.

  • CMS Migration - Lync 2010 to Lync 2013 & Pool Pairing

    Hi all,
Question regarding CMS installation when migrating away from Lync 2010.
Here's a brief overview of topology
    - Lync 2010 Pool in Data Centre 1
    - Lync 2013 Pool #1 in Data Centre 1
    - Lync 2013 Pool #2 in Data Centre 2
    - Lync 2013 Pools are paired
    Consider the following
     - CMS located on SQL Backend server for Lync 2010 Pool
     - CMS database installed on SQL Back end for Lync 2013 Pool #1.  CMS is moved to this location
Now for correct pool pairing and failover capabilities I would assume that
     - CMS database needs to also be installed on SQL back end for Lync 2013 Pool #2
Once this is done then Lync 2013 Pool #2 Front Ends should replicate back into the CMS stored on the back end SQL database for pool #2?  Nothing else would need to be done?  As soon as it's installed its now a backup?
If I'm reading into this correctly the following from TechNet is basically telling me to do this?
When you establish a pool pairing that includes the pool hosting the Central
Management store, a backup Central Management store database is set up in the
backup pool, and Central Management store services are installed in both pools.
At any point in time, one of the two Central Management store databases is the
active master, and the other is a standby. The content is replicated by the
Backup Service from the active master to the standby.
    Thanks,
    paul.

Correct, when you enable pool pairing on Pool A - if it's a CMS server - it will prompt you to create the CMS database on Pool B. If you move CMS into a pool that is already pool paired, my experience is that CMS doesn't get created on Pool B because the
creation only happens during the pool pairing setup. Thanks -Richard

  • Questions in Lync 2013 HADR

    Hi Team,
One of the customer raised the query:
In our scenario, we want Active/Active High availability between different geolocations with RPO=0 and RTO near zero (seconds).
    Questions:
    1. Isn’t this possible with pool pairing and database availability AlwaysOn synchronous commit?
    2. What is the bandwidth needed between both sites?
    3. Do you think to achieve Active/Active high availability (RPO=0, RTO=+/-0) for Lync between 2 datacenters we should go with the following scenario:
    --> Storage: virtualization (stretched LUNs)
    -->Compute: Hyper-v Clustering (failover cluster)
-->DNS: Global Datacenter Server Load Balancer
    4. What is the RTO and RPO in your proposed solution?
    Please advise. Many Thanks.

    1) No.  Pool paring doesn't automatically failover, therefore it does not meet the requirements.  Also, HA within a pool isn't supported across geographic locations, so I don't believe this requirement can be met within the supported model.
It's possible if you have a solid enough pipe between the locations with very low latency that you could go unsupported with the old Metropolitan Site Resiliency model:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg670905(v=ocs.14).aspx but not supported in 2013.
    2) This can't be answered easily, it depends on what they're doing and using. How many users, how much archived data... the SQL mirroring will be quite a bit, as well as the shared presence data on front ends.  Will they use video between sites?
Too many questions to get any kind of reliable answer.
    3) If RTO/RPO is this critical, then I'm assuming it's voice.  If it's not, then a short outage should be more tolerable.  If it is voice, do not leave the supported model... just don't.  You don't want to be in that
situation when systems are down and it's your phone.  No live migrations, just what's supported via TechNet and virtualization whitepapers.
    4) My proposed solution would be HA pools in both datacenters, built big enough it's unlikely to go down.   If the site does go down, pool failover can happen in a reasonable amount of time, perhaps 15 minutes if you're well prepared,
but phones could potentially stay online during this time.

  • Questions in Lync 2013 - HD Photo

    Hi,
We have Lync 2013 Enterprise environment for 4000 users.  We ran the script mentioned in the below article to display the HD photo on Lync 2013 client:
    http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Add-Personal-URL-Photo-in-df0136ea/view/Discussions#content
    Outcomes:
The script is working just fine for the users who doesn’t have any photos in AD.
For the users who has photo in AD, the script works just fine until they go to offline. Once they are back to available from offline, Lync client picks up the photo from AD. (Could be because of the Address book changes over night). It tends to run the
script by administrator every day  to keep the HD photo for the users.
    Questions:
    Is this by design?
If not, is there a way to only keep the photo which got updated through Script rather than getting updated over night after the user went to offline?
    Please advise. MANY THANKS.

  • Enabling conferencing on a Lync 2013 pool

I deployed a new pool, but did not initially deploy conferencing.  This is embarrassing, but I can't figure out how now.  If I open the pool in topology builder, and check the conferencing box to enable it, I get a red X.  I can't seem to
    get around it.
    I saw this thread:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/lync/en-US/e6e131f8-005a-4777-935b-734115521ac3/unable-to-enable-conferencing-in-topology-builder?forum=lyncdeploy

    OH COME ON!!!!
Yes, when you check the box you can't click OK, but the Associate an Office Web Apps dialog appears below whereas it wasn't there before you checked the box.  I thought I would have to click OK first, then go back in to set this.  If you simply
pick an Office Web Apps server by scrolling down, or uncheck the box to not select one, you can click OK.  I learned this from hovering over the red X per your advice.
Thank you.  Still very embarrassed, but I think this is the first time I've ever not enabled conferencing from the start in years of of deployments.

  • A question about oc4j load balancing/ failover behaviour

    Hi
I have been trying to set up load balancing using 9.0.2 standalone oc4j instances that share sessions.
    - I set up two oc4j instances (say oc4j1 and oc4j2) pointing to a load balancer entering the following in <J2EE_HOME>config\http-web-site.xml:
    <web-site host="<ip>" port="<port>" display-name="Oracle 9iAS Java HTTP WebSite" cluster-island="1" >
    and
    <frontend host="<host>" port="80" />
    - I entered <cluster-config/> and <session-tracking/> in each oc4j instance's orion-web.xml, and <distributable/> in their web.xml files.
    - I started the loadbalancer(java -jar loadbalancer.jar -debug) and the oc4j instances.
Everything works fine up to a point. They are both added to the cluster and the debug messages show that requests are being routed to oc4j1 and cluster session value update messages are sent by oc4j1 and received by oc4j2. When I shut down oc4j1 requests are routed to oc4j2 and session information is maintained.
However, when I start up oc4j1 again, it does not appear to be receiving the session value updates now being sent by oc4j2 so if I now shut down oc4j2 the session is lost. Can anyone please tell me what I have missed?
    Thanks in advance

  • Lync 2013 High Availablity in Pool

Hi MS recommends to have 3 FE servers in Lync 2013 Pool. I have few questions to clarify
    1. why MS says if we have 2 FE servers then it will work as Lync 2010. what makes the differences between Lync 2010 (with 2 FE servers and Lync 2013 with 3 FE servers)
    1. with 2 FE servers in Lync 2013 pool, what will happen if my BE server goes down?
    3. I know the quorum used in Lync 2013 High availability (windows fabric) . Where the quorum will be stored? what model it is using?
    Thanks

Enterprise Edition pools now are recommended to have a minimum of three, yes THREE front-end servers. This is due to the "Windows Fabric" replication architecture based on Azure. The back-end SQL database is no longer the store for real-time data.
If you BE Server down, Lync will work for 10 min. then become down
In order to function the Windows Fabric needs to achieve a status of Quorum. This means a certain number of servers (Voters) must be able to communicate with each other to ensure that the pool is capable of maintaining consistency (Quorum). There are 2
different pool states in which we must maintain\achieve quorum which differ in how many voters must be available.
Cold Pool Startup\Quorum Lost – when a pool is first starting or after quorum has been lost, that pool must have roughly 85% of its servers available to achieve quorum<sup>1</sup>.
Operating Pool – after a pool has been started we need at least 50% of the servers available to maintain quorum<sup>2</sup>.
<sup>1</sup> This means that when defining a pool within topology builder only add the servers that will be deployed at that time, not in the future. If you put 6 servers in a pool within topology builder and only deploy 3, we will never achieve quorum because
we don’t have approximitley 85% of the servers operational. Thus, the front end services will never start.
<sup>2 </sup>If quorum is lost then all Front End services will be shutdown to protect the cluster from data loss.
To identify the Quorum voters a given servers Windows Fabric identifies check C:\ProgramData\Windows Fabric\Settings.xml. This file is updated when the Windows Fabric Host service starts up, thus any changes to pool members requires a service restart on
all Front Ends in the pool, one at a time. The To-Do list in topology builder lets you know that after publishing the topology. If this isn't completed your servers will have a skewed view of the topology which could cause issues.  Depending on the number
of servers within the pool, this will dictate which voters are required.
Even # Server Pool (Figure 1) – each server will have 1 vote and the SQL instance will have 1 vote. The SQL server will act as a tiebreaker.
Odd #Server Pool (Figure 2) – each server will have 1 vote.

  • Lync 2013 - Number of FE servers in paired pools

    Hi,
We have an Ent. Edition Lync 2013 pool with 4 FE servers, we would like to implement a second pool at a different location for disater recovery.
Does the DR pool which will be paired with production one need to have exactly the same number of FE servers or can it have less (i.e. 3) ?
    Thanks for your help,
    Luca

You can have 1, or 3, or whatever number, it just has to be Enterprise to match Enterprise, you can't use Standard Edition with Enterprise for example.
    Per: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj204697.aspx
"Each pool in a pair should have the capacity to serve all users from both pools in the event of a disaster."
That's not a statement on the number of servers, just the capacity to do what you need to do if you fail.  It's sort of an obvious statement that speaks to load sharing among pools.  Don't max out two pools and expect to be able to fail over to
one and run at full capacity.
In a DR situation, you may not need full capacity, so the amount of resources you'll be giving it will be based upon your own internal best practices.
Edit: And finally, yes I've done exactly what you're asking, it's fine.

  • Lync 2013 client connectivity to Lync Edge Pool

    Hi all,
I have a question regarding Lync 2013 topology deployment
    I have read somewhere that
The external interfaces of the Edge Server must not be routable by either clients or servers on the internal corporate network. The internal interface of the Edge Server must not be routable from the Internet. These routing principles must be enforced by deploying
firewalls between the Edge Servers (an internal and an external firewall) or by enforcing strict routing at the network layer.
Is the statement true? If it is, then there is no way for the internal client to talk directly to Edge server: its internal network interface doesn't have default route, so this interface can't talk to any client/server that is located on different subnet.
(unless I have to manually add-route in command line for all the subnets in the internal network, which is not preferable)
Any advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks

The mentioned statement is true. You need to manually add static routes in to the Edge server. Only the external interface must have a Gateway configured.

    Hi
The solution is to do a ‘repair’ install of Office 2013.  This will reregister the needed components and the popups will stop.
A repair install can be done from ‘Programs and Features’, highlight Office 2013 and click ‘Change’.  When the install wizard appears, choose the ‘repair’ option.

  • Replication issue between lync 2010 FE and lync 2013 FE

    Hello
I face any issue in my lync server's .
I was in the last steps in the migration process from lync 2010 to 2013 enterprise edition .
where CMS was moved already to 2013 , and later on many time I checked the replication and it was fine , then I deleted the CMS DB FROM 2010 FE and I checked the replication and it was fine .
later on I proceed to delete the archiving server and monitoring server and it was fine .
    later on I proceed to
    Reset call admission control
    Prevent sessions for services
    Stop Lync Server 2010 services
Remove a Front End Server from a pool
I just I face this replication issue after I start the process to delete the lync 2010 pool which im stuck on it now .
one more thing while I was trying to delete the 2010 front end pool , I got the error .
Error: An error occurred: "System.InvalidOperationException" "Cannot publish topology changes. Conference directories still exist on a pool that would be deleted. Remove the conference directories before continuing."
so I moved the conference directories from 2010 pool to the 2013 pool successfully.
but later on when I check the replication I notice the replication issue ?

    why LastUpdateCreation : 3/23/2015 10:53:23 PM from the lync 2010 pool  ????
I'm not doing any change on 2010 pool now (I just try to delete it ) , all the change it is on 2013 pool .
for edge server 2013 I shut down the server since there is another configuration issue there (so replication to edge server not the issue now since it is down).
my question is this will affect my lync 2013 since it is the production now  ? is this un completed steps for removing the 2010 pool affect my production.
is the replication issue affects my 2013 pool ?
    Kind Regards
    MK

    Hi,
From your description above, did you mean before deleting the Lync Server 2010 Pool from topology, you found the replication of Lync 2010 FE Server not update to date?
If it is the case, based on my knowledge, there is no affect for Lync Server 2013 Pool. Please double check if Lync Server 2013 Pool work normally, and Lync users in Lync 2013 Pool can use all Lync function without issues. Then you can delete Lync 2010 Pool
from Topology and publish it. After finish it, please re-run step 2 on Lync Server 2013 FE Servers.

  • Migration to Lync 2013 - Unable to remove 2010 Edge Server

    Hi
We did a migration from Lync 2010 to Lync 2013. Everything worked without any problems. But now we are unable to remove the Lync 2010 Edge Pool. Everything has been done according to
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj205369.aspx “Migration from Lync Server 2010 to Lync Server 2013”.
I am able to remove the 2010 Edge pool, but by trying to publish the topology, I receive the following error: “Error: An error occurred: "System.InvalidOperationException" "Cannot publish topology changes. Call orbit still
exists on one or more deleted application servers."
How can I resolve this error?
    Regards
    Peter

    Hi Peter,
You have to change the Call Park Destination FQDN to the Lync 2013 Pool.
Please check out the following article.

  • Unknown Presence in Lync 2010 and Lync 2013 co-existence

I have lync 2010 and lync 2013 in my environment. Everything was working fine except when I moved the DNS of the Lync 2013 pool to the load balancer. When I did that, users on lync2013 could see the presence of users on Lync2010 pool but not vice versa.
I have point the Lyncdiscoverinternal.domain.com to the lync2013 pool DNS. I have opened migration ports on the load balancer but still not working. It works perfectly fine if I point the DNS of the pool to one server directly without going
    through the Load balancer VIP.
    Am I missing anything here?
    Thanks!
    Alert from TechNet Posting

    Hi Kojo Obeng Antwi,
Please check out the following information.
Deploying DNS load balancing on Front End pools requires you to perform a couple of extra steps with FQDNs and DNS
    records.
A pool that uses DNS load balancing must have two FQDNs: the regular pool FQDN that is used by DNS load balancing (such as pool01.contoso.com), and resolves to the physical
IPs of the servers in the pool, and another FQDN for the pool’s Web services (such as web01.contoso.com), which resolves to virtual IP address of the pool.
In Topology Builder, if you want to deploy DNS load balancing for a pool, to create this extra FQDN for the pool’s Web services
you must select the Override internal Web Services pool FQDN check box and type the FQDN, in the Specify the Web Services URLs for this Pool page.
To support the FQDN used by DNS load balancing, you must provision DNS to resolve the pool FQDN (such as pool01.contoso.com) to the IP addresses of all the servers in the pool
(for example, 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2, and so on). You should include only the IP addresses of servers that are currently deployed.
    Best regards,
    Eric

  • User migration from Lync 2010 to Lync 2013

We have Lync 2013 pool co-existence with Lync 2010 pool. Need to move users based on their AD Group membership. In a particular AD group, only few of the users are enabled for LYNC 2010, not all users. How to get the list of only Lync enabled users in AD
group and move them on to Lync 2013 by PowerShell script?
