Questions on converting to Aperture

I've been a photographer for about 4 years now and I've been accustomed to using Photoshop. Im now on CS4 and I love the layout. You can see some of my work on www.diplightmedia.com.
I've looked at AP before but never took it seriously. Apple says this is the ideal software for photogs and I wanted to know from a professional standpoint, which software is better? PS or AP? Is it a preference thing or is one truly better? Is the conversion over to AP from PS really worth the $199? Looking forward to the responses.

Comparing Aperture and Photoshop is not comparing like with like.
Photoshop is a pixel editor. Best in class, layer based pixel editor.
Aperture is a Digital Asset Manager.
I think SierraDragon explains it best in his post here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10154685&#10154685
I agree that you need both kinds of app. Using Aperture for your Raws means you will use Photoshop a lot less. But there are things that you will need a pixel editor for.

    You are welcome.
    convert and store externally?
    What versions of iPhoto and Aperture is your wife using? With both iPhoto 9.3 or later and Aperture 3.3 or later she simply could open her iPhoto library in Aperture and be done, since these versions are using a unified library format.

  • Questions about converting files in order to import to iMovie '09?

    I was able to import the videos from my camera (.mts files) into iMovie '09, but now when I click Import from Camera, iSight opens up instead. Since I can't find out why it won't open up my camera files now, I have decided on just converting the files. I just have a question about converting though. The videos I recorded from my camera are in HD. They're very good quality. If I convert the videos from .mts into .mp4, would that reduce the quality of the video?

    When that happens to me I get stubborn and make iMovie see the camera by shutting down and reopening iMovie, because I don't want another level of transcoding. If that doesn't work and you have a card reader of even better, a sd slot on your iMac, just plug the card in. If it appears on the desktop iMovie should see it, and if it appears on your desktop then iMovie should read it.
    I have a Canon HFS 100 that works best if I take the card out and plug it into the computer.
    The times I converted to .mp4, I thought the quality did degrade, because it had to be converted to .mp4 and then imported as AIC. But I am not an expert on whether iMovie can deal with .mp4 directly.
    Canons require that one have the camcorder plugged into a power outlet, another reason to use a card reader.
    What kind of camcorder do you have?  With some camcorders, if one takes both photos and video, the video won't be read.
    When nothing works, occasionally deleting iMovie preferences works.

    When I convert from 60>23.98 in the Gopro app, it works fine.
    Does anyone know if there is any quality loss in this app?
    Also does anyone know another free software tht works great to convert markIII 60>23.98 footage?
    Thank u thank u thank u !!!!

    Questions about Cinema Tools should be asked in the Final Cut Studio forum.

  • Integrating Canon Raw Converter with Aperture (for G9)

    This is a follow up question to an email I posted last night on Apertures incompatibility with Canon G9 Raw Format.
    DOes anyone or has anyone tried to integrate the Canon Raw Converter that came with the G9 in with Aperture? I thought of it this morning. My thought is to identify the Canon Raw converter as the external editor. Changes can be made in Canon RAW then saved. There would be the additional picture created in Aperture that I can modify. Granted the saved format would need to be a jpeg or tiff file format.
    Any thoughts? Has anyone tried this?
    Also, what is a high quality format the file can be saved once changes are made in Canon RAW?
    Thanks

    Using 'Open in External Editor' in Aperture tells Aperture to convert the RAW file to either a TIFF or PSD and send that to the external editor, not the RAW file. So if a camera is unsupported by Aperture you can't use the command...

  • Converting from Aperture to Ps

    Hi All,
    I currently use Apples Aperture software.  Love it but since Apple are shutting down the product I would like to sign up for Photoshop and Lightroom.
    Is it possible to convert my current extensive library in Aperture to Photoshop or Lightroom?
    Will I loose all the adjustments I have made on my photos in Aperture?
    Is there an easy way to do this?
    Looking forward to your feedback.

    As an aside, since this kind of applies to the OP’s question:
    Lightroom and Photoshop are not competing products; they have entirely different purposes.  Photoshop is an editor, albeit an extremely complex and multifaceted one.  Photoshop is for editing a single photo, right down to the pixel level.   Lightroom is all about file management and workflow. It’s there to get your photos from your camera, 0n the order of hundreds and thousands, on to your computer, into folders, organized and sorted, ‘developed’, tagged and keyworded, and exported to various formats, editors, and social media - as quickly and simply as possible. Yes, all these things can be done in Photoshop’s Bridge, but it’s not near as efficient when working in large quantities.  Likewise Lightroom has added more localized editing options in recent versions, but it’s nowhere close to as powerful as Photoshop.  Hence many digital photographers own both: Lightroom to manage their workflow and basic developing, and Photoshop for heavier editing, compositing, and layout.  Other’s don’t like heavy post processing and only use Lightroom, and still others don’t shoot large volumes or prefer managing their own files and stick to Photoshop and Bridge.
    In summary: Aperture and Lightroom are similar products.  Photoshop is a different beast entirely.

  • Question about "Convert ID3 Tags" command

    I just used "Convert ID3 Tag" to convert all the songs in a library to ID3v2.4. When it was done, abotu half the album art had been killed. I have a backup, so nothing is lost, but I did not expect this to happen. My questions: (1) Is this expected behavior or a bug?, and (2) Any ideas why some album art survived and some did not?

    Thank you! I actually managed to figure it out myself before you replied.
    For anyone else out there who might be interested:
    Change the import settings in iTunes > Preferences > General, to Apple Lossless Encoder. Then you can select the files/albums you want to convert, and click on the Advanced menu while holding down the Options/Alt-key, and click "Create Apple Lossless Version". I found that it doesn't actually convert the existing WAV-files, but creates an Apple Lossless copy of every single file, so I had to spend some time weeding out the WAV-files afterwards. This is a one-time effort, though, as every CD will be imported as Apple Lossless from now on.
    Better still, solved my problem with the album artwork!

  • Using Sigma DP1 Raw X3F files via Adobe DNG Converter to Aperture 2.1.2

    I wish to use Aperture 2.1.2 with my Sigma DP1 raw ( X3F format) photos.
    I used the latest Adobe DNG converter 5.1.0.30 to successfully convert Sigma DP1 X3F to DNG format files. After importing the DNG files into an Aperture directory, they were not an acceptable file format, and thus I could not use them.
    Does this mean that Aperture is not reading the DNG file correctly or Adobe has got it wrong with their DNG conversion of the X3F file format ?
    Do I need to wait for an Aperture update to fix the problem of using the X3F file format ? Is there a solution around in using Aperture with Sigma X3F raw photos ?

    Aperture does not currently support Sigma X3F or linear DNG (only raw DNG), and Adobe's DNG Converter can only yield a linear DNG from an X3F. So your only choices right now are to use a different product such as Lightroom which does support X3F, or use the supplied Sigma Photo Pro software to generate 16 bit TIFFs which you can then import into Aperture. Because Sigma Photo Pro is unstable and slow on Macs, I've been effectively forced to use Lightroom. Lightroom is a capable product, but it lacks the elegance of Aperture, so I remain dimly hopeful that Apple will eventually support X3F, and somewhat more hopeful that it will at the very least eventually support linear DNG.

  • Iphoto lybrary converted to Aperture

    When  I try to start iPhoto I get the message that it has become an aperure library.  I did not convert it and evne do not have Aperture.  How can I rebuild it as an iPhoto library ?

    Exact error : Your photolibrary is being used by another applicatin or is unreadable.
    Turn the computer of and restart. The Aperture library can not be opend with iphoto...
    But after restart of iphoto several times I got a new message that my iphoto library was unreadable but no more mention of Aperture.
    So a rebuild of the library solved the problem.
    Thanks for you time.

  • Question re: converting flip ultra hd video

    I found my way to this post in the FAQs:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/437535?tstart=0
    The properties for these clips show an image size of 1280 x 720 and a frame rate of 30.00.   Should I be changing the output options in the prism software accordingly?  Do I just change the frame size or should I also be changing the frame rate to 29.97?
    Thanks,
    Cynthia Merzer

    Thanks for the response.  Just a few follow up questions.
    What about the issue of editing for the future?  Right now, I will not be editing for Blue Ray.  But if I'm going to spend the time editing, Blue Ray like quality could become the future standard and then my clips would be editied and in the correct resolution.  I would not really care to re-edit them a few years down the line; once is enough!
    Also, if I convert the Flip mp4s to .avi, is there a concommitant loss in quality?

  • Question about converting trial to full version.

    Hi there,
    I have 2 questions:
    1.
    Currently I am using Framemaker 7.2 trial version. I have the licence code for Framemaker 7.2. I found out from the Adobe website (http://www.adobe.com/support/service/trial.html) that I need to Activate the trial product for it to be converted to a full version but I do not see any Activation button when I opened the trial version. How do I convert from trial to full?
    2.
    After Step 1 above is done, how do I upgrade version 7.2 to version 8?
    Thank you.

    You cannot purchase FrameMaker 7.2 anymore, you can buy FrameMaker 8 from Adobe Store.

  • Question on converting edited CR2 files to DNG

    Sorry, I cannot find a separate DNG forum. If this question is in the wrong place, please direct me to the correct forum.
    I have lots of CR2 RAW files on my computer, and I am considering converting them to DNG. Many of these RAW files have already been edited and so have a separate XMP sidecar file containing the edits in the same folder. If I convert (using the Adobe DNG converter) these edited RAW files to DNG, what is converted? The CR2 RAW file alone, so that the converted DNG file is the same as the original unedited CR2 file? If so, what happens to the orphaned XMP file? Ignored?
    My concern is that I will lose all RAW edits if I convert to DNG because the conversion process ignores the edits contained in the separate XMP file.
    Can someone explain this to me? Thanks.

    So what you're saying is that the DNG conversion de-mosaics the image?  I guess that's not surprising, since for compatibility with older Photoshop versions you'd have to deliver a more or less standardized format.
    Kind of throws a big monkey wrench into claims that converting to DNG is functionally equivalent to opening raw images directly though...  I was experimenting with a "fall leaves" image last night and no matter what I tried with the 2010 process I was still able to get more detail in bright red leaves with the 2003 process.
    I suppose that says if you want maximum flexibility and control you'd better buy the Photoshop upgrades and stick to opening raw camera files directly.  A variant on the "if you want to play you have to pay" adage.
    -Noel
    P.S., Does the DNG converter read the centralized database as well as XMP files?  I personally prefer the database to the extra files.

  • Convert from Aperture to Lightroom

    I have a "managed" Aperture library with 18,000 Pics. The library is located in my pictures folder on my main HD. I want to convert my collection of pics into lightroom while retaining the keywords that I have assigned. I want to create a "bucket" file structure that will reside on an external HD. The pics are an assortment of file types consisting of NEF raw, Tiff, jpeg & DNG.
    I have tested a few pics to get a feel for exactly the best way to do this. I tried exporting a master with a sidecar file and when I import into lightroom I cannot see the keywords. When I view the file with iView the keywords show up and I cannot figure out why LR doesn't see them.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Annoture was the answer.... Here is how I was able to do it
    1. In Aperture export each project as a separate folder w/xmp to final desired drive location rename files to master filename (the file name is important later when running Annoture)
    2. Drag the new folder into iView
    3. Use Annoture to copy metadata from Aperture to iView (it will look for matching filenames)
    4. In iView Sync Annotations- (export to original file)
    5. Import into LR at current location and ratings & keywords are now visable
    The only thing that I don't understand is what to now do with the XMP sidecar files?? Do you need a sidecar file with a DNG or do you only need them with JPEG & RAW files? I notice that if I remove them when I go into LR all of the information is unaffected. Does this mean that I have altered the original file or is LR keeping track of this somewhere else? Should I remove all of them?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Question on converting #FFFFFF to Color

    Yea, I'm new at this but am having fun!. I have written an applet to replace and applet that I downloaded a few months ago. I need to set the colors of the foreground and background from <PARAM> tags in html. My question is how can I convert #FFFFFF that will be in the param tag to a Color object for setForeground() and setBackgroud()? I'm using a swing Applet.

    Test this little program that convert any hexadecimal color to an RGB color :
    import java.awt.*;
    public class ColorConverter {
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              getColorFromHtml(0xffffff);
              getColorFromHtml(0xff0000);
              getColorFromHtml(0x00ff00);
              getColorFromHtml(0x0000ff);
         public static Color getColorFromHtml(int htmlColor) {
              int red = htmlColor>>16;
              int green = (htmlColor>>8)&0x00ff;
              int blue = htmlColor&0x0000ff;
              System.out.println("red :" +red+" green : "+green+" blue : "+blue);
              return(new Color(red, green, blue));
    }------ unformatted version -----
    import java.awt.*;
    public class ColorConverter {
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              getColorFromHtml(0xffffff);
              getColorFromHtml(0xff0000);
              getColorFromHtml(0x00ff00);
              getColorFromHtml(0x0000ff);
         public static Color getColorFromHtml(int htmlColor) {
              int red = htmlColor>>16;
              int green = (htmlColor>>8)&0x00ff;
              int blue = htmlColor&0x0000ff;
              System.out.println("red :" red" green : "+green+" blue : "+blue);
              return(new Color(red, green, blue));
    Before that you have to convert the string #FFFFFF to an int :
    String s = "#FFFFFF";
    s = s.substring(1);
    int hexColor = Integer.parseInt(s, 16);
    Color rgb = getColorFromHtml(hexColor);

  • Question Raw Converter Tool Box Again

    I have a question on the
    Raw Converter tool box.  When I open some Raw photos, correct them with the Raw Converter Tool Box that automatically comes up with PSE 8,  and then click "Open Images" I am taken to the PSE view screen as if I had opened a JPEG.  The Raw Converter Tool Box then vanishes.  How can I get the tool box back without closing and then reopening the Raw File?  Thanks Robert.
