Questions on file organization on my new mac

Hi,
I recently switched to mac(book). I have few questions on how to arrange my files on my mac. Please note that I need to use windows quite significantly for my work. I intend to install it through parallels.
1. Most of the normal Mac problems seem to do with permissions, preferences, cache and some 3rd party apps. I was wondering if working mostly on a standard account will result in all these problems afflicting only my standard account and not the administrator account. On my old PC, I used my administrator login only when installing new softwares. Most my work was through a standard user account. Should I follow the same strategy with my new mac. Please provide your comments.
2. My hard drive capacity is 60 GB. The OS alone is occupying 25 GB. In the remaining free space I need to install windows for which I will need 15 - 20 GB. I am left with around 15 GB for my mac files. This is not sufficient. Is there a way I can reduce the space that mac os occupies?
3. A friend of mine who is a long time mac user told me that he partitions his hard drive. One for the OS and the other for documents. I will use windows (thro parallels) on my mac. I am afraid this partitioning idea may make things complicated for me. Is there any merit in following this partition strategy?
Thank you.

Murali

Hi muralis;
Let me start with your last question first on partitioning your drive. Today that is generally consider a bad solution. If you are interested in all of the details I can give them to you later. For now since you admit that you think you are going to come up short for disk space and I agree, I would strongly suggest you do compound this with partitioning.
Now on to making OS X smaller, there is an application called Monolingual that will remove other languages from your system this can save about a GB of space. If you have installed GarageBand it has a bunch of sample tracks that burn up bookoo disk space if you aren't going to use that delete them. Also in /library/printers there are folders for a bunch of printers. If there are any printer you will never own, delete the files for them. That can save several 100 MB of space.
Finally do you really need so much space for Windows? With such a small drive I would consider give Windows less space like 10 or 15 GB instead of 15 to 20 GB. To me it sounds like you are being overly generous with Windows.

FCP doesn't like mpeg2 transport streams. You might give ClipWrap a chance to do the conversion. They have a free trial. If it works, the full version is something like $50.

    Hi there

I do have some own music made from my old mac. It broke and i've just been able to take all the undone files (only .band-files) on a external driver. As i've got now a new mac (version ios 10.7) all my songs are not able to open up. The software will start, but the tracks are all empty. what can I do?

  • How do I retrieve backed up iweb files onto a brand new Mac book?

Hello all. My Hard Drive died a few weeks ago, but luckily I backed up everything beforehand (we knew it was coming, but didn't have enough cash for a new mac before it died). Now, since I don't have a hard drive to do a migration, how do I go onto Mobile Me and get my backed up files. I saw them, and tried to download the zipped file, which worked fine, but iweb doesn't recognize that they are now on my computer.
What steps did I miss, or what should I do over?
    Thanks,
    Karen

    Karen:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Did you backup the Domain.sites2 file that was in your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder? If so, get it and place it in the iWeb folder on the new Macbook. Launch iWeb and it would find and load your site.
If you don't have a backup copy of the domain file you'll have to rebuild the site from scratch. However, Chapter 2.3 of this iWeb FAQ site has tips on using some of the published files in the reconstruction of the site.

  • HT3258 after   transferring data from old mac to new mac, I can't see the transfer files and application on new mac.?

One thing though when the system finished transferring the files
at the end a message came up
" 2013-09-11 04:18:05 +0000 Paul Nirwan could not be created.
I did the transfer two times, same thing. first time I used the WiFi
and second time from my back up disk with USB connection, using Migration Assistant.
Second time also said that Paul'Mac already exist, Paul'Mac 2 created.
How can I get rid of first data trasnferred?
It will be using too much space on hard drive if Ileave it therre.

  • Cant seem to transfer a file over to my new mac wirelessly!

Ok so first off i dont want to buy an external hard drive or any form of SSD.
I want to trasnfer my iPhoto library from my old mac to my new mac, i am aware of whtat file and how to do it! but its bloody 20gb and so doesnt fit on my usb to trasnfer it!!
So im trying to find means of wirelessly trasnferring the file ...dropbox and email wont allow me to do it due to the largeness of the file......and so im left with file sharing and airdrop.
Airdrop has been working fine a few times i used it! However everytime i send my iphoto library pckg via airdrop on my new mac it says "oldmac" canceled the traasnfer (when i didnt!!) ...all the time!! SO this seems to be a no!

YET on my new mac i dont know how i can actually contact/connect or find my old mac!!? i know the old mac should appear on the sidebar in finder under shared!! BUT ITS NOT THERE!!! grrr its not there and i checked on finder preferences and all things are checked to show on my finder!!? please im doing something wrong how can i file share???
IF this wont work either does anyone else know a way i can trasnfer my iphoto library???

I can think of Three quick ways
    1) Buy this $30 dongle.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC531ZM/A/apple-ipad-camera-connection-kit
Take a 3 photos with a camera using a clean SD Card.   Take the SD card out of your camera and into an adapter on your computer.  Put the MOV file in the DCIM folder of the SD card.  Now put the SD card into your iPad using the $30 dongle.   Go to the photos app, then import. You should see 3 photos and the MOV on your ipad.
    2) If you have a mac get the MOV imported into iPhoto.   Then put the MOV into an album in iPhoto.  Connect your ipad and mac with a usb cord.   Now in iTunes go deep into the settings to sync that album.  Press SYNC.   Disconnect the ipad from the mac, and you should see the MOV on the ipad in your photos or video APP.   (iPhoto is only made for the mac)
    3) If the MOV file is small, under 25mb, most email programs will let you email the MOV.  Send on your desktop, then go to the ipad, check email, and then download.

  • Trasfering files from PC to new Mac Book

I'm running Tiger on my Mac. In Finder I have a "Network" icon under my iDisk icon. My brother just got a mac book pro running Snow Leopard. He tells me there is no Network icon. Is this replaced with something else in SL?
Also, can someone point me to a KB article or other info on what he needs to do to transfer his personal files (pictures, etc.) from his PC to the new MBP?
    Thanks!

  • UsiTime Machine to move an old machine's file organization to a new machine

I have an Old 24" IMac and an newer imac. Time Machine is resident on an external HD, and I want to swap out machines, BUT while preserving the organization and files of the older machine.
Possible? Or must I reformat, port from Snow Leopard or Leopard and use the utilities==? restore option?
    Thanks

    Thanks,
nice to find more paranoid people...I learnt the hard way. When Time Machine was new I embraced it with relief told a machine about to be moved out of production to make a back up...it reported that it had. I erased the machine...successive 1s and 0s and then found Time Machine reported incorrectly, it made a disk image not a full backup. Sixteen years of data gone...three weeks to pice it together from network, thumb drives, CDs and Zip drive backups...never fully. After a go round with Apple support up the chain, Apple made a service and interface change so others could not do the same. The old adage: "I may be paranoid...but it doesn't mean that they are not out to get me" resonates here. Your procedure suggestions are helpful.
Yes, I have used Wikidot since Snow Leopard came out. Many problems are identified, including the one with the Adobe products. But not many fixes are posted unfortunately. The site has a neat little client for you own machine to scour problem software that one may have installed. I found it useful.
    RE the new machine...it is brand new out of the box. Well new three months ago, I have not had time to put it in production till now. I am inclined to update to Snow leopard and then add files....living a bit dangerously. BUT I will not give up the full back up... just in case. (-;
Thanks also for the tip to Carbon Copy Cloner...I am will acquire it asap.

  • External hardrive error, cannot save files onto ex hd, NEW MAC USER!!! D:

hello, i just recently purchased my macbook pro last night, and i had no problem adding all my songs into itunes from my western digital harddrive. But one problem i have been starting to notice is that i can't save any files on it. And whenever i plug it in, it tells me that there has been an error trying to open it up. I have googled for a few hours and the only solutions i have seen are that the cord may be too long and i need a new cord or i have to reformat it, which i don't want to do or else my thousands of songs and pictures are gone. What is the best solution to get access to save to my hard drive without causing any damage to my files. Thank You!

on the step where you have to use terminal, after UUID, it only says:
Display detailed information about a disk or partition.
    Root access is not required.
    have i done something wrong?
edit*-after googling, i see that i should have had a number sequence pop up, ill try again now

  • Another question about running old programs on new macs

I'm a little confused and was wondering if someone can help me out.
From what I've read I cannot find any options for me to run an old programs for OS with my intel-based MacBook. Just in case I've tried downloading a bunch of different things (OS 9.2.2 which won't run, sheepshaver which I can't figure out how to use even it it might work). IS there anything that I can do?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    1. Buy an older PowerPC Mac used or refurbished as my FAQ* explains how to do:
    http://www.macmaps.com/usedrefurbished.html
    2. Contact the developer of the said software and ask a Mac OS X version be published of their software.
    3. Politely ask Apple develop a virtualization program through AppleCare's Customer Relations department, http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/ and if you want a free developer account go to http://bugreporter.apple.com/ and submit it as an enhancement request.
    4. Tell us what software you want to run that you found is 9 only, and maybe we can tell you an alternative that can open the same documents, play the same style game that is Mac OS X native, or will run under Windows or Linux on your Mac?

  • Does Setup Assistant delete files on the new mac?

I just got a new Macbook Pro, and I'm trying to decide how to transfer all of my files from my old computer to my new one. The problem is that I'm a little paranoid about losing any files on the new computer. I once accidentally wiped my entire system on the old one after an incorrect restore and lost several important folders required for certain applications because they weren't included on the OS reinstallation CD. I don't want that to happen again. I've been reading about Migration Assistant and Setup Assistant, and it seems like they do pretty much the same thing, but I want to make sure that any files currently on the new Mac aren't deleted if I use Setup Assistant to transfer my old files.
Any advice for this particularly paranoid Mac user would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Paranoia is understandable; however, misplaced. Just follow the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

  • CS5 prints too light using new Mac, perfect from older Mac?

Images edited w. Photoshop CS5 (v. 12.03) on a Mac running OS 10.6.8 print perfectly on my Epson Stylus Pro 3880. But the same files printed from a newer Mac running OS 10.7.4 and Photoshop CS5 (v12.1) print too light. Exact same printer settings in PS being used, same printer driver version (reinstalled to make sure not a bad driver), using the same .icc paper profile (also reinstalled), and using same batch of paper printed at same time.
Where do I start in determining the problem? Epson confirms driver is compatible. Everything else on the new system with PS works great. Gallery show in three weeks, must figure this out quick. Thanks.

Ps update is 12.0.4 and 12.1, but you are probably missing something, by posting screenshots someone may be able to spot the problem
are you sure which one is actually wrong
do they display identical in both OSes
are both versions of Ps using the same embedded profile, did you confirm that

  • CS6 on newer Mac's?

    Hi All,
After reading all the current rumours of a 5K (or greater than before) screen resolution iMac coming soon, I'm seeking some advice when it comes to the announcement of these products!
I currently have a Retina MacBook Pro, which runs great all of my purchased CS6 software clearly on the screen - following the update which Adobe issued to make it run better on Retina displays.
My question is that if Apple release new Mac's with higher screen resolutions, is it likely that CS6 will be updated to support this so it functions as well as possible (so text isn't blurry etc), or is it more likely that there won't be any CS6 updates, just those for CC?
    Many thanks!
    Jon

CS6 is done and done. Nobody goes back to an old code base, even more so now after 3 years.
