Questions on "Find my iPhone" app

I see there are a numerous amount of threads on lost/stolen iphones.
My phone has been stolen and I have a few questions about tracking it that havent been answered so far.
(Note that my iphone did not have an internet data plan on it. I used it only with wi-fi in all / most of the places I used to go.)
1.)If the thief deletes teh 'find my iphone' app, will I still be able to track it? (They would have been able to access the phone when it was stolen since I did not have a password on it. I am thinking they may have deleted this app first.)
2.)If they turn off the location services, then I won't be able to track them either right? (This is a possibility, but I find it hard to believe that they will use the iphone without connecting it to the net.)
3.)I set a remote lock on the phone. I beleieve if the password is entered wrong 10 times the phone will wipe. Will I still be able to track it afetr ot has been wiped like this? (If I choose to wipe it from www.icloud.com then I won't be able to track it any longer.)
4.)How easy is it to crack the password I set? I don't mean by guessing. I mean, can they take the phone to an 'iphone blackmarket specialist' who can bypass / reset the remote lock I put on it?
5.) How long does the find my iphone app keep a log of the iphone? If I do not locate it, and log into www.icloud.com one year later to see if i can find it now, would I still see it on 'my devices?" Or will it dissappear due to inactivity?
Getting an iphone stolen is not very nice. It's crushing. Investigate in a number of location based apps now.
Thanks

The reality is this, if you have not located your phone by now, you can most likely kiss it good-by. Most thieves are well aware that when they steal an iPhone, to immediatelly turn the phone off...this defeats Find My Phone. Once off, they restore it as a new device in iTunes and slap it on eBay or Craigslist.
Change all the passwords you ever used on the phone: email, iTunes, etc. Report to the police & your carrier.

  • Question Regarding "Find My iPhone" App (Used On Macbook Pro)

    Here's what I lost:
    - iPod Touch 8BG (I got the iPod in August of 2009)
    - The iPod SHOULD be in my house.
Here's what I'm trying to find my iPod with:
    - "Find My iPhone" App on iTunes
    - MacBook Pro (Mac OS X Version 10.5.8) My laptop was also purchased in August of 2009, and my software is up to date.
Here's my main question: Is it possible to use the "Find My iPhone" App on my computer to help me find my missing iPod if I DO NOT have the "Find My iPhone" App on my iPod? I would assume that the answer to my question would be "no", but I'm not very familiar with apps.

You need to pay to update the OSX on your Mac.
    Mountain Lion (OSX 10.7.x) requires
    General Requirements
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
    Supported Models
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Also since you said you have iPod Touch 8BG (I got the iPod in August of 2009), that iPod is a 2G iPod touch that does not Support iCloud. However, if you previously subscribed to the paid MobileMe you might be able to find it but since you can;t log into iCloud you can't do that.
Sorry but you are out of luck finding your 2G iPod except the old fashioned way, lokk for it,.

  • I need someone to answer a  few Find my Iphone App questions?

I lost my phone overseas...I got too drunk and lost it at some bar..I thought I was lucky because I had signed up for the find my iphone app on the ICloud. When I tried to locate my Iphone through the services, It couldn't find my Iphone because it was "OFFLINE" I assume it was because it was out of battery, making it impossible to find it now.
So I requested that my phone be put it in "lost mode", but since it's currently offline, it's Pending! I also added a contact number and a 50$ reward for the return of my phone, so the next time my phone is turned on and connects to the internet, it will lock and the stranger using my phone won't be able to get in to it and steal my info right?...But, seeing as my time is almost up being overseas, it seems very unlikely I'll be getting my phone back. So I might have to get a new phone!
My Question is, if I click on "Erase Iphone" now, it will erase all the data on my phone, And it won't be able to be tracked anymore, that's all fine and good. But the thing is, since my phone is currently off line, it's currently a pending action and won't erase the data unless it's turned on and connected to the internet again....SO, if I were to get a New Iphone, (I am eligible to uprgrade) it would be risky right? Because if I get a new Iphone and get all comfy with a new iphone, and someone turns on my old IPhone, the "Erase Iphone" request will commence and it will delete all the data on my old iphone as well as my NEW iphone right?
Cause I will be using the same Apple ID for my new Iphone! I can only assume that this is how it works....Apple isn't very clear on how stuff like that works.
    PLEASE PLEASE HELP!

You don't need to worry.  It won't delete anything from iCloud or your new phone, it will only erase the data on the lost phone, and that will only happen if it ever goes online again.

  • Finding My iphone app question?

Is there a way, within the Find My Iphone app to "Look Back" at a previous location sight rather than the current one that is being displayed.
For example at 10:30 it says my phone was at the corner of broadway and main st, yet i want to know where the phone was at 10 o'clock or sowhen I previously looked for it?  Can anyone help or know if this is possible to do, please let me know how, thanks....
    Phil

You can purchases apps from the app store that will periodically email you the devices location. They are not that useful for an iPod since for emailing the iPod has to be connected to the internet. They work well with phones since the phones have GPS and can send the email over cellular.

  • The IOS 6 updates in find my iphone app is horrible. I was using IOS 5 on my iphone till I got a note in apps to update to IOS 6, I thought it would be good, but it changed all my apps, and I do not like it.

The IOS 6 updates for findmy iphone does not work as well as IOS 5 app. It will not let you update your location when you tap the refresh arrow. So tired of it telling me that my iphone is offline when it is never off. The IOS 5 was great and it worked so much better then the IOS 6. Not only have find my iphone app changed but all my apps changed when I downloaded the IOS 6 update. If I knew that I would not get the same apps back as they are now, I would put my iphone back to factory settings. But my fast updates on my computer are IOS 6.

  • How do I add another iPhone to my Find my iPhone app (my wife's phone)?

While pretty explanatory in the question, the problem is this: I'd like to add my wife's phone to my Find my iPhone app and mine to her's so we can not just track each other but the other's phone in the event of a loss or theft.  My products are already added.  We're just seeing if we can do this.  Any help is appreciated.  Thank you.

The app will automatically show devices that are have Find My iPhone enabled, and are using the iCloud account that the app is signed into.  If your wife's phone is using a different iCloud account, you'll have to sign out, then sign back in using her ID to view it.

  • Is it possible to cancel a remote erase command set in the Find my iPhone app?

I have recently been reunited with my 17" MacBook Pro by the police after it was lost.
To cut a long story short I initiated the "erase mac" element as I thought I wouldnt be seeing my MacBook again.
Sooooo........... now having the computer in my possession again, I d like to know if there is anyway that I can either:
         1. Stop the erase command from initiating?
    or
         2. Recover the relatively small amount of information that has not been backed up (due to travelling) possibly by
turning my network connection off and taking off before connecting to the internet again?
I ve contacted Apple Support and they have advised that (1) is not possible as far as they (the operator spoken with)
are concerned, but (2) was a very good question that they have had no training on or information available about.
As such, thought I would ask the Guru's here to see what are the possibilities, or have I just got to bite the bullet and
    accept the losses?
I wondered if the erase command can be sent via an unauthorised network connection such as when wifi looks up what
    networks are available??
I ve not turned the MBP on since getting it back and am assuming, as there is no notification from the Find my iPhone app
that it has been located that way, that it has not had network access if it has been turned on at any time since I activated
    the locate and erase facility.
Many thanks for you kind attention and hopefully positive response.   :-)
    Kind regards
    Bob

There is one way you can try... it should work in theory. It's called Target Disk Mode. What this does is that you have to connect your computer to another Mac and your computer will show up on the other Mac as an external hard drive. You can then transfer everything to the other Mac.
Here is where its going to get complicated. You would need another Mac. Since you said your MacBook Pro is a 17" then you still have the old FireWire ports. You need to find out what kind of FireWire port it is (400 or 800). Get a FireWire cable (it's going to be hard nowadays but try Amazon, eBay, Newegg). You might need a FireWire to Thunderbolt converter is the other Mac only has Thunderbolt ports.
Once you plugged the computers in with the right cable. Turn the other computer on first then turn yours on with the "T" key down. That will enable Target Disk Mode. (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10725)

  • Find my IPhone App

I mislaid my IPhone a few days ago and have failed in my attempts to locate it with the Find the IPhone App.
Unfortunately the phone has now run out of battery.  Before it did, I gained some information.
My main question is how accurate the App is?  1m, 10m, 20m, more?
If it locates a position (say) 10 m from the true location, will it show exactly the same postion if you use the App again at a later time?
When you use the App to "ring" the phone, does it ring even if the phone's ringtone is set to "vibrate only"?
Can anything be done if the phone's battery has gone flat?
    Any info would be appreciated.
    Thanks, batty38

I have noticed that the location accuracy is pretty close, but not exact.  Maybe within 500 feet or so.  For example, I tested it at a friends house which house number was 31, and it said the phone was at house # 15.

    yes.

no, the phone needs to be connected to internet to work via find my iphone.

  • Do I need to download the Find my Iphone app if it is already enabled on my iphone's settings?

Do I need to download the Find my Iphone app if it is already enabled on my iphone's settings?

Good question.  No, you do not.
The only reason you would need the "Find My iPhone" app on your iPhone would be to find a different iPhone (or iPad) on this particular iPhone.
Right now, with no additional app on your iPhone, if lost, you could find it from a computer or other device by simply logging into iCloud using your Apple ID and password.

  • My "find my iPhone" app says "old location"

my "find my iPhone" app says "old location" in regards to the location of my iphone. does that mean phone can't be tracked if the phone is off or charge is lost?

  • Stolen Macbook Pro,Find My iPhone App, Erased it, What else?

Hi, my Macbook Pro was stolen. When I found it, I called the police, and a policeman asked some questions. I think I won't get my mac back but I still take some actions.
I use Find my iPhones app on my mac and received an email of notification from this application. It showed the detailed address. Then I called the police station. They checked the address and told me that the address is an apartment building, so they can't do anything for it.
I didn't have the orginal box of my computer so I tried to find the serial number under my Apple id account. But under My Products, my Mac was no longer there, I thought the mac should have been registered by the theif. What else I can do with the serail number? The policeman told me if I can give him the serial number, he can enter it in the system to track it, is it true? Will it work?
I called the Apple, they said the other way that I can get my serial number was to visit the store where I purchased the mac. Is it possible? I purchased the Mac a few years ago.
Because I use the Find my iPhone app, the thief has noticed it and the thief might change the setting so I found I can no longer track the location but I can see it is online. Finally, I decided to use this app to erase my mac (but it's no longer belong to me) Is it safe to erase my mac by using Find My iPhone?
After all these steps, what else I can do?
Will the theif also use Apple Support Communities?
    Additional question:
I know it might cost more than the actual value of the mac to find back the Mac or other similar stolen items. Most of people just accept it and it can be difficult for police to find it, either. However, if we all accept it and didn't take steps to deal with it, will it become worse? Because the thieves won't be punished and we paid more to purchase new products. Maybe it only happened to persons that you don't know, it doesn't happen to you. You won't take it seriously. Then what if it happens to you, will you just do nothing to contribute to a high crime rate and disrupt social stability?

    mnkun3 wrote:
So just accept it? Are there any successful examples that people get back their stolen mac/iphone/ipad ?
Plenty.  I read about them all the time in my local newspaper.
Like Kappy told you previously, move on and/or buy another.
    The good news:
If you have homeowners or rental coverage check w/them.  Most policies cover stolen property.  If your MBP was stolen from your car, make a claim w/your auto carrier.
If you purchased your computer w/a credit card, check w/them also.  You just may be covered for stolen items.

  • Find My iPhone App Sent Requests

I lost my phone and the battery died so the 'Find my iPhone' app did not work to locate it. I didnt have a passlock on it, so im a little concerned about whoever finds it that they may get some of my personal information if the individual charges it and turns it back on. Using the 'Find my iPhone' app, i sent a passcode lock request while it was turned off and in the meantime, i went to the store and purchased a new iPhone.
My question is, will the app successfully lock my previous phone, if i sent the request in prior to purchasing my new phone? If/When someone turns it on, will the phone prompt a passcode lock? Feedback is appreciated.

How are you connected? 3G? Wi-Fi?
Also, under the location services, check to make sure Find my iPhone is ON there as well. You also may want to turn on "Status Bar Icon" to be able to know when your device is being tracked.

  • If a device is removed from the Find my Iphone app on Icloud, does this mean that it is unlinked from that Icloud account when the account is removed from icloud in the settings of the iphone?

    Hi there!
I have a question regarding Icloud and unlinking an Icloud account from a device such as an iphone. If the iphone device is removed from the Find my Iphone app in Icloud, does this mean that it is unlinked/removed from the account after the account is removed manually in the icloud settings of the phone? Or in the case of resetting the phone will it become icloud locked still? I hope this makes sense and thank you to anyone who answers!

The following indicates that if you use iCloud to erase the device and then remove it from your account it would then be usable: The quote below is from If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen
If you remove the device from your account after you erase it, Activation Lock will be turned off. This allows another person to activate and use your device.

  • Lost iPhone 4s, "Find My iPhone" app not installed

    Hi,
I lost my iPhone 4s and didn't have "Find My iPhone" app installed. Is there a way for Apple to remote install it for me? I also don't have iCloud set up on the phone.
    Thanks for the help.

I had my iPhone 4 stolen last night and when i logged into find my phone it appeared offline. I did the remote wipe from iCloud and got a message that read that it couldnt process because the phone was not connected to the internet. A few minutes later I received an email that the remote wipe had begun and that it couldnt be reverted.
20 minutes later the message on iCloud was that the Location of my iPhone couldnt be updated because it had been wiped. My question is does that message indicate that the remote wipe was completed?  I just dont know if the phone was able to have access to the internet or had been turned off ever since it was stolen.
    Would appreciate comments
