Questions on Firewire cable connection

I usually disconnect my Alesis Firewire audio interface by unplugging the firewire cable from the back of my iMac. Is it okay to just unplug it from the interface, leaving the cable connected only to the back of the computer?
Also, if I want to run all audio thru the interface is it okay to leave it connected all the time? (It's powered only by the firewire connection but does have it's own power available).

Hi poflynn
Yes it should work fine to leave the cable connected to the iMac and just plug and unplug the Audio Interface. Although if you had a FireWire or Combo USB/FireWire Hub you would save ware n tare on the Audio Interface's connection, by just plugging and unplugging it's cable from the hub.

no, that shouldn't be an issue. for the record i have both FW and USB tails hanging of various machines at various times, i never gave it a second thought, and still don't (Back in the SCSI days you couldn't do that, that is definitely one of the benefits of FW and USB)

  • Question on Firewire 400 Connection via iMac and throughput

This may be a question for an Apple person, but does anyone know if the Firewire connection on the iMac is managed by an individual I/O card, versus the system bus as are the USB ports.
The 'word out there' it is and thusly the Firewire performs better than the USB, depending on other 'stresses' on the CPU and OP SYS, etc.
    Can anyone confirm this technicality?
It could be useful in selecting various peripherals.
    Thanks.

Um... FireWire 400 does have more throughput than USB2, but that has nothing to do with there being a separate card or bus for it (nor is it Mac-specific). It's a difference between how the two technologies work. FW400 will alway provide more sustained bandwidth than USB2, by design. USB uses considerably more overhead in its data packets (and the 480Mbps max speed is inclusive of that overhead), CPU usage, and the delay between packets is much higher as well.
In practice, a FW400 device can transfer pretty close to the 400Mbps limit, whereas USB2 typically tops out at 160-200Mbps sustained. This is true regardless of the hardware platform, and generally it's not relevent if there's a separate controller card or one built-in.
This is also very much common knowledge and well-known and understood. It's not rumor.

  • HT5219 How would I connect dual monitors and also a firewire cable?  Macbook Pro (Retina)

Currently I am using two thunderbolt to DVI connectors for the dual monitors, but I am left without any firewire cable connection for my audio interface. THe only adaptor I found was another thunderbolt to firewire, but since I already used these two ports, I am left with no options. I haven't been able to find any usb to firewire cable connections.
Are there any other adapators/ports I can use that I am not aware of?

    Something like this at US$300:

    Highlights
One cable output provides instant access to eight ports
Ability to daisy-chain up to five additional Thunderbolt devices
    Includes Cable-management channel
    One Gigabit Ethernet port
    One FireWire 800 port
    One Thunderbolt port

  • Connecting a MacBook to  PowerMac G5 with a firewire cable

I have a 13" MacBook. I want to transfer files from my PowerMac G5 running OS X 10.4.11 to it. I can hook an external drive to the MacBook via firewire and it recognizes it. I can hook up the PowerMac and the MacBook via firewire, start the MacBook with the T key depressed and see the hard drive on my PowerMac. But... I can't do the reverse. I can start up the MacBook with the T key depressed and see the G5's hard drive on it.
    Any suggestions?

Are you using the same cable to connect the machines?
Some folks suggest to shut both machines down, then connect the Firewire cable. Boot the Power Mac into Target Disc mode. Once you see the FireWire symbol on the PowerMac's screen, try booting the MacBook.
Once the MacBook has started & you're logged in, check for the hard drive in Finder. If it doesn't appear, open System Profiler (Applications>Utilities), and click Firewire in the left-hand column. Are any devices showing here?

  • I am using IMovie 11 with a new iMac.  Unable to import video from a Panasonic PV-GS400 mini-DV camcorder using a Firewire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter which is then connected to a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter.

How can I get iMovie to recognize my Panasonic PV-GS400 as a device so I can import video to my iMac?  I have a FireWire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to the camcorder.  Since my new iMac has only Thunderbolt ports, I purchased a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter to connect to the cable.  I also purchased a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter to connect to the computer.  My camcarder is still not recognized.

I would suggest that you try a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable along with the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter.
Those Firewire 400 to 800 adapters do not seem to work well with iMovie.
The 9 pin to 4 pin cables are available at reasonable prices here, for example.

  • How do I connect my laptops with firewire cable

My old mac laptop screen has died. How can I connect the old laptop to my new macbook in order to see the hard drive of the old machine so that I can retrieve/print files from it?
I have a firewire cable, but when I connected the two, the old machine did not show up on the screen of my new laptop. What else do I have to do? Thanks

See this Knowledge Base article on how to do this: it's called Target Disk Mode.

  • I have my Canon GL2 connected to my I-Mac OSX version10.7.3 with a Belkin 800/400 9-pin to 4-pin firewire cable not working!!

I have my Canon GL2 connected to my I-Mac OSX version10.7.3 with a Belkin 800/400 9-pin to 4-pin firewire cable and the computer is not acknowledging the camera.

While holding the option key, click the  in the menu bar and select System Information. Select Firewire in the Hardware section and see if your camera shows up as a connected Firewire device. If not, then you have one of three basic problems:
         1. Defective Firewire cable
         2. Defective Firewire port on computer
         3. Defective Firewire port on camcorder
Rule out any of the above by trying a different cable, Firewire device (like a hard drive) or try your camcorder/cable on a different/friend's computer.
If you suspect a Firewire port problem on your computer, you can try resetting it by shutting down and disconnecting the power cable to the computer. Wait for 30 minutes and plug back in and startup. You can also try resetting Parameter RAM (PRAM) on the iMac. (Apple's Instructions for reseting PRAM)

  • 970a-g46 am3+ cable connection questions

    Hi all,
I'm a first time computer builder and am in the process of building my own rig. I have MSI AMD 970a-g46 am3+ mobo and cool master elite 431 case.
    1) I can't seem to find where on the mobo to connect the speaker for the post beep test. I've tried to look through the manual and watch videos but all the videos skip ahead of the internal cable connections to them being done.
2)the cool master 431 case comes with HD and AC 970 audio, which do I use with the MSI AMD 970a-g46 mobo? I think its the HD from what I've seen/read in videos.
3)I would like to do the test boot with the mobo, the gpu, psu on the monitor and post beep before mounting to make sure I connected it all correctly at least once but I don't know where to connect the speaker (question1). Also I don't know where to "short" the mobo before connecting the psu and plugging it in to "turn on" the mobo for the test. I saw a video by newegg of building a computer where he did the same.
That's all the questions at the moment since I'm taking a break. Any help would be majorly appreciated. Thanks.

ok attached the Front panel connectors diagram below! just find the missing pins and count to locate pins! (the name of the headers should be marked JFP1 and JFP2)

ok there is a picture below from the manual and it should be connected on JFP2 on pins 4 and 6!

connect the HD audio one not the AC97 from your case to the audio header!

and as for shorting the board to power it up to test it works thats on JFP1 on pins 6+8 just short those 2 and it should start up!
if you do start it outside your case use a piece of plain cardboard under the mother board to isolate it from shorting out on anything!

  • Which Firewire Cable to Connect Drobo S to 24" Early 2009 iMac? Thank you.

    Hello Support Communities,
Which Firewire cable do I need to connect a Drobo S to a 24" early 2009 iMac?
    Firewire 800? Firewire 400? 8 pin? 9 pin? 6 pin?
    Thank you.

The iMac has Firewire 800 it is a 9 pin connector as shown…
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_1394
    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a3/Firewire800.jpg
Wikipedia also says the Drobo S has Firewire 800 & USB2
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drobo
A Firewire 9 pin to Firewire 9 pin cable should be fine, otherwise you could use USB2 but it is slower & less reliable than FW 800 in my opinion.

  • 23" display looses power when either USB or firewire cables are connected

I was actively using my computer when one of my 2 23" cinema displays lost power. I thought it died and was unplugging everything, when I discovered that it powered back on when both the connected USB and FIREWIRE cables were disconnected from my mac. If I connect either one, it immediately goes black (with no white LED). Any solutions outside of taking the thing in for repair?

I'm leaning toward suspecting the 65w power brick of delivering insufficient power to the monitor to drive the USB/Firewire load.  Gonna try a different power brick and see if that makes any difference.

  • Connect a PC and TiBook G4 using firewire cable

    Hi all,
I want to connect my TiBook G4 to a PC with firewire cable, can anyone provide me any info regarding this?
    thanks a lot.

I just bought a new airport extreme and have been trying to get it working with my comcast telephone modem. It looks like it gets and ip but no dns info. I have manually tried to enter the info but it still fails. If i hook it up as a bridge to my old linksys router it works fine.

  • "Which Firewire cable should I purchase to connect a late 2006 Intel-based iMac with a 400 port to a Mid 2010 IMac with an 800 port?"

“Which Firewire cable should I purchase to connect a late 2006 Intel-based iMac with a 400 port to a Mid 2010 IMac with an 800 port?”

To connect both iMacs, you need a FireWire 400 to 800 adapter, and a FireWire 400 cable, so you will be able to connect both Macs
