Questions on Lync Server Management Pack 2013

Hello All,
We are using SCOM to monitor Lync Server
Is it possible to create "distributed applications"?
Which services are critical for Lync Server to function?
Is it possible to monitor the network connection between servers?

Hi there,
Yes it is possible to create distributed applications for Lync server
Regarding the services technically all the Lync services should be monitored since each of them is responsible of a certain workload. but the main service is the lync front end service that once it is stopped it will affect client sign-in.
regarding monitoring the network it depends on what is the traffic that you want to monitor

  • Query used by SQL Server Management Pack for monitoring database backups

I use SCOM 2012 R2 and the SQL Server Management Pack to monitor SQL Server database backups. I believe I am getting false positives. SCOM reports database are not backuped, while in fact they are. So I need to troubleshoot this. I suspect SCOM is querying
the backup history in the msdb database. I want to know which query SCOM uses.
I have tried looking in the monitor's definition but I suspect the query is embedded in the management pack files which are binary. I have also tried running a trace using the SQL Server Profiler on my test environment and overriding the interval to 60 seconds,
but I don't see a relevant query being executed. I also don't see the alert reappear so I suspect SCOM does not honor the interval in a way I would expect.
What query, or other method, does SCOM use to check database backups?
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you both Ivan and Michael,
I only saw your messages by email and didn't see your screen shot before I extracted the query myself. In my own queries I calculate the backup age in hours instead of days because of daily full backups. Perhaps It will be a good idea to create my own monitors
from scratch like I used to do with Nagios.
I will study the vbscripts and might create my own version which allows the query to be entered as an parameter and move all code to a .Net class which can be called from vbscript as an COM object. This way I hope to reduce the vbscript code to an minimum
while keeping the flexibility of the SCOM Operations Console and the robustness of .Net. I suspect I want to make more non standard monitors in the future.

  • Lync server 2010 and 2013 coexistence replacing edge servers

    Hi all,
    here is Our current deployment:
    Lync server 2010:
    1 edge
    1 FE
    3 branch sites
    1 Monitoring server
    Lync server 2013:
    3 FrontEnd
    2 Edge
    2 Mediation
    3 Backend
Simple urls are still point to Legacy (2010) servers.
External settings of Edge 2013 servers have been define With different name (Access,WEB and AV) and DNS (internally and externally) is pointing to New 2013 servers (via KEMP and TMG).
ATM 2013 topology is using edge2010 server.
Seems like we have two options for replacing Edge servers, one is Rip and replace and the other one is side by side transition.
We would like to do rip and replace so we can keep old simple urls (so that we dont have to send notice to external partners about Our New Access edge info) and using 2013 edge servers for federation and keep users on 2010 servers, then move them in
    a controlled way.
What is the best way to do this?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
From your description above, the purpose is no need to update the New Access Edge info to the external partners. So for those external partners who set federation type of “Allowed Partner Server”, you need to keep the SIP domain name and the Edge Server
    FQDN the same as before.
So base on my knowledge, you need to plan a down time, and firstly cancel the federation route for the Lync Edge 2010 Server. Delete the Lync Edge 2010 Server and publish the topology. Then deploy the Lync 2013 Edge Server with the same FQDN with Lync Edge
2010 Server. Then enable federation for it and point to the Lync Server 2013 FE Pool.

  • Lync Server Management Shell

I've installed Lync 2013 standard edition for the 4th time today and still no joy. Just a single server which I want to get rid of now. I can't publish the topology with this server deleted because there is a conference server. That has to be deleted from
the management shell which won't start. That is why I want to start again.
When I start the management shell all I get is a blank window and it never gives the PS prompt. There are no errors in the event viewer relating to this and it displays absolutely nothing. It has been sitting there for about 30 minutes so far.
Does anyone have any thoughts about how to fix this?
    Best wishes.....
    Colin

    Hi,
I get this in my lab environment a lot when I perform a clean install on Server 2012 R2 platforms. Once I've installed the latest
Cummulative Update and bounced the box, the issue resolves itself.
I know exactly what you mean, it just sits and the prompt never appears.
If you're update requires you to perform any management shell tasks for database updates etc, then you can use the 'Import-Module -Name Lync' cmdlet from a normal windows powershell window and then do it from there.
I believe the issue will resolve itself once your FE is patched with the latest
    cummulative update for Lync Server
    Kind regards

  • Questions on NWDI server management.

    Hi
We implemented NWDI on the same server as that of the portal.
(8GB RAM, 2.61 GHz AMD Opteron proc 285, Win 2003 OS)
A lot of space in <b><drive>:/usr</b> is being utilised whenever I run the import in NWDI, so from time to time I will have to delete the log files to create space.
is there any place <b>where I can default these log files to fall on a different drive location?</b>
Also I learnt that CBS utilises lot of drive space during its operation and when I check the CBS service in Visual Admin
<b>rootFolder is pointed to ./tem/CBS --> where is this located? I am unable to locate this?</b>
    According to  http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/53/75b3407e73c57fe10000000a1550b0/content.htm
The CBS can also point to C:/temp/CBS
I have enough space in C: drive <b>so can I point the rootFolder to  C:/temp/CBS, will this affect the development process that is going on now?
Can this arrangement help improve the performance?</b>
    Please advice
    Thanks

  • Lync Server Management shell error(Install-CsDatabase -LocalDatabase)

    hi
during process  command Install-CsDatabase -LocalDatabase i face to below error what's the problem?
    please help

    Hi,
Try to change the command as the methods below:
For installing databases, Install-CsDatabase uses three primary methods for placing the databases onto the prepared SQL Server-based server:
Run Install-CsDatabase without DatabasePaths or UseDefaultSqlPath. The cmdlet uses a built in algorithm to determine the best placement for the log and data files. The algorithm only works for stand-alone SQL Server implementations.
Run Install-CsDatabase with the DatabasePaths parameter. The built-in algorithm to optimize log and data file locations is not used if the DatabasePaths parameter is defined. Using this parameter allows you to define the locations
where log and data files will be deployed.
Run Install-CsDatabase with UseDefaultSqlPaths. This option does not use the built-in algorithm to optimize the log and data file locations. Log and data file are deployed according to the defaults set by the SQL Server administrator.
These paths are typically set for the purpose of automatic administration of log and data files on the SQL Server in advance, and are not associated with the setup of Lync Server 2013.
The DatabasePathMap parameter can also be used to explicitly specify a location for each database and its respective log file.

  • Deploy licences for Lync server 2013

    Hi Guys,
How can i apply or how to put the Licences on Lync server 2013 i have a test lab Lync Server 2013 and i want to put the License on it how to do that? or is it possible i need another installation for it?
    Thank you,
This forum really helps a lot.

Agree with Anthony, the only other scenario is if you want to upgrade from the Evaluation to the full version in which case you need a copy of the full version media and follow the steps below:
Insert or mount your full version media on your Lync server.
    Open Lync Server Management Shell
Run Get-CsServerVersion to display the current version
    Run msiexec /fvomus server.msi EVALTOFULL=1 /qb
You may be prompted to specify the location of server.msi (which can be found in the Setup\amd64\Setup\ folder on your installation media.
Run Get-CsServerVersion to confirm the conversion  was successful.
    Run Enable-CsComputer

    Hi,
Please make sure the connection between FE Servers and BE Servers is normal.
Please make sure the CMS replication is update to the latest status.
You can check the CMS replication by the cmdlet in Lync Server Management Shell:
    Get-CsManagementStoreReplicationStatus
If the replication is not update to the latest status, you can invoke it by the following cmdlet:
    Invoke-CsManagementStoreReplication

  • How to Check if you are running Lync Server Evaluation or Licensed Version

I was not sure if our Lync environment was running Evaluation Version of the Lync Front End server or the Volume Licensed Version. I was looking to migrate from PoC to production so I had to make sure that the services didn’t stop in the middle of production.
A simple cmdlet to verify this: Get-CsServerVersion
    1. When run it will attempt to
    2. Read the registry value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Real-Time Communications\{A593FD00-64F1-4288-A6F4-E699ED9DCA35}\Type
    3. Based on that registry value, the cmdlet will then report back the version number of the software and the Lync Server licensing information the local computer and report back one of the following:
o That the Lync Server volume license key has been installed on the computer, meaning that no updating is necessary.
o That the Lync Server evaluation license key has been installed, meaning that the computer must be updated.
o That no volume license key is required on the computer. Updating from the evaluation version to the licensed version is only required on Front End Servers, Directors, and Edge Servers.
What if Evaluation Version is installed and you have to upgrade to Licensed Version?
    1. Log on to the computer as a local administrator
    2. Click Start, click All Programs, click Microsoft Lync Server 2013, and then click Lync Server Management Shell.
    3. In the Lync Server Management Shell, type the following command and then press ENTER:
    o msiexec.exe /fvomus server.msi EVALTOFULL=1 /qb
o Note that you might need to specify the full path to the file server.msi. This file can be found in the Setup folder of the Lync Server Volume media installation files.
    4. After Setup finishes running, type the following from the command prompt and then press ENTER:
    o Enable-CsComputer
o Repeat this procedure on any other Front End Server, Director, or Edge Server running an evaluation copy of Lync Server
o This procedure should also be performed on any Branch Office Servers that were deployed by using the Lync Server media installation files
Using Get-CsServerVersion will also show you
    1. What Version Number you are running
    2. What patches has been installed

    Hi,
I couldn't find direct way of saying whether node manager is running or not but here is the work around. Using WLST when you say "startNodeManager", if the node manager is running this command throw an output saying "node manager is already running". Let me know if this solution works for you, if it works then I can give you java program for this if required or you can use "WLST JAVA Mode".
    Thanks.

  • Updating management packs and adding new onces

    Hello Forum
I enjoy the use of SCOM to monitor our environment.
    But i have Two questions:
    1. Will updating management packs from the builtin utility remove any custom overrides and monitors?
For example i have crated custom disk monitors under the Windows Server Management Pack and Custom SQL monitors under the SQL sql management.
    2. Why are only some management packs available from the builtin utility? for example Exchange 2010 and AD 2012 Management packs are downloads on the download center? Why not publish them to the builtin utility of SCOM?
    Thanks for your time!

    Hi,
    1. No, updating management packs will not remove custom overrides. However, with new mp's, new monitors may come, which change some of the monitors which you have overriden. Always read the MP documentation for new mps and test the new mp in a test environment.
    2. Regarding the Exchange 2010, there have been some issues earlier, why it was taken off the online catalog. This will also give you the managment pack documentation, which you should always read.

./emctl upload agent execute successfully to all the target hosts wich has the web logic server, http server and web center content, imaging, capture, urm installed.
    Problem
From the enterprise manager console, i am not able to see the weblogic servers, web center domains, imaging, capture etc of the target/monitored hosts. i.e agent is not able to discovery the installed web center  on the target servers.
What else should i enable or install?
    Thanks

First, can you see the agent and host in EM?  If not, then you'll need to follow these steps:
    emctl secure agent
    emctl start agent
    emctl config agent addinternaltargets
    emctl config agent listtargets
The host and agent must be "green" in EM to discover targets.   The last command listtargets will show you what the agent has "auto-discovered".  Not all targets can be auto-discovered.
Did you check the Auto Discovery Results to see if the targets are waiting for promotion?  If they're not there, then you might have to "manually" discover them.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E24628_01/doc.121/e24473/discovery.htm#CBAEGHBH
For each target type, there could be additional pieces that you need to look for when discovering, for example for
    SOA - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E24628_01/install.121/e24215/disc_mon_soa.htm#GSSOA9921
    IDM - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E24628_01/install.121/e24215/idm_discover_config.htm#GSSOA10201

  • Exchange Server 2013 Management Pack in SCOM 2012, can not update healthset status automatically

    Hi, all
I have Exchange Server 2013 and SCOM 2012 installed. I have imported Exchange Server 2013 Management Pack to SCOM 2012. Now I have a question that when there is a service not healthy, I can find the red alert in my alert view with the Exchange 2013 server,
but after the service is healthy automatically, the red alert is still there. I can only make it become green healthy status after reseting the healthset status in the healthset explorer.
Does anyone know how to make the server become green healthy status automatically after the monitor is healthy?
    Thank you.
