Questions on Mackeeper and clearing out junk! Help!

I downloaded Mackeeper and it told me junk was slowing down my Mac but after it asked for $88 i quickly uninstalled it. Im worried it left a virus that slowed down my Macbook Pro. Even tho everyone says Macs don't need antivirus ware, is there something i can run to make sure there isn't anything harmful leftover? Also what is safe to use to clear out junk to improve how my Mac runs?

Don't install junk (like MacKeeper) to begin with. A program to accomplish what you describe and is safe to use does not exist.
If you have reason to believe your Mac is not performing as it should, please explain. Specific guidance can be provided but it would help if you would correlate that unexpected performance with certain activity, such as the time it takes to start up, to launch programs, to shut down, to load webpages, etc. Provide as much detail as you can.

    If your fonts are changing when viewed on other computers - epecially those running windows - you need to look at using web-safe fonts...

  • Time Machine, Disk Utility, and clearing out corrupted snapshots

    Hi, all. I've been having some troubling issues with Time Machine and could use your collective insight.
    I have a 500GiB external USB2 disk that I've been using for Time Machine since December (the oldest snapshot in Backups.backupdb is named 2007-12-13-222250). Everything worked fine until sometime in late January, when Time Machine decided to ax 2/3 of my Applications directory. Time Machine's logging is terse, so I wasn't able to determine what caused the corruption. The fact that this error wasn't caught and flagged by Time Machine bothers me.
    Especially because I discovered this in the process of needing to recover from a crash on my laptop's hard drive -- I had to roll back to a previous, complete snapshot to get all my applications back.
    After that I had to engage in some jiggery-pokery to get Time Machine to re-snapshot everything, but things proceeded normally until I received my new copy of DiskWarrior 4.1 last night (although DiskWarrior is an innocent bystander here). I tried to use DiskWarrior to rebuild the directory on the Time Machine disk, but it failed before trying to write anything.
    (For those who care: after some back and forth with Alsoft tech support, we determined this was likely because my Time Machine volume has 6.2GB of catalog data, and DiskWarrior works by rebuilding the directory in memory, so it has to be able to fit the whole catalog into virtual memory.)
    I was a little paranoid that something might be wrong with the disk after that, so I fired up Disk Utility and told it to repair the disk. It churned for about 6 hours and repaired an extraordinarily large number of hardlink reference count errors, but completed by claiming that the disk had been repaired.
    When I next told Time Machine to run, instead of copying over a couple GB of data like it usually does, it started copying 38GB! ***? I took a look at the previous Time Machine snapshots, and discovered that Disk Utility had totally corrupted every snapshot I'd made since last month's fandango. Most of the root-level directories in the snapshots now look like this:
    $ ls -al /Volumes/Time\ Machine\ Backups/Backups.backupdb/xxx.net/2008-03-13-025640/Euphrosyne/

    That is clearly, completely wrong, and it alarms me that Disk Utility could cause so much damage to a Time Machine volume.
    Since I also use SuperDuper! to regularly clone this disk, it's not as big a nightmare as it could be, but this means that I'm going to have to clear out every snapshot for the last month by hand, both because I obviously can't trust them anymore, and because I keep getting messages like this in the logs:

    I'd like to keep the old snapshots if I can. What's likely to happen if I just go and clear out the b0rked backup sessions by hand?
    (Hmm... it appears yes, because I just deleted them all and the disk didn't recover the freed space.)
    Here's the important question: has anyone else had issues using Disk Utility on a Time Machine volume, and does anyone at Apple have any plans to add integrity checking to Time Machine? As it stands, I don't really feel like I can trust it in its present form, as convenient as it is...

    I have trouble with disk utility on my new (1 TB Lacie) as well as on my old (500 GB WD) drive. After doing a backup, du tells me a never ending list of errors like
    HasFolderCount flag needs to be set (id = 599567)
    (it should be 0x10 instead of 0)
    Everything was O.K. before doing the backup; so is the disk to be backupped, according to du.
    Up to now, no other problem occurred, but I´d like to clear this issue before my trust in time machine is restored.

  • Mackeeper and daily.out log file

    This is not a question, but a tutorial garnered bits and pieces from the communtiy.
    If you have downloaded Mackeeper, you should check your daily.out file. It continues to try to run every 10 sec. even when you have trashed it (via their uninstall instructions) and will fill up that file over time. ( 10.4 gigs in my case on the daily.out log file....).
    Disclaimer note: I am using OSX 10.6.7 but this should work for most OSX systems with this bug.
    I recently found this recurring cycle.
    Fri Mar 29 06:42:29 admin-admins-power-mac-g4-3 com.apple.launchd.peruser.502[103] (com.zeobit.MacKeeper.Helper) <Warning>: Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds

    ....and could only see it happening by watching it log every 10 sec. in the Mac Console.app. (Was not registering in Activity Monitor.app). This apparently has been going on for over 2 years even though I thought I had uninstalled Mackeeper via their own instructions.
    This has the unfortunate consequence of filling up your daily.out log over time (mine was at 10.3 gigabytes after a little over 2 years... imagine infinite pages upon pages of the same stupid recurring message).
    If you have ever downloaded MacKeeper, I strongly suggest you view your daily.out log file via Console.app. You can see Mackeeper working simply by viewing “All Messeages” in Console if it’s still running... or trying to run (every 10 sec.), that is the problem, and follow carefully all the steps listed here:  http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/  .Use the 2nd portion of the tutorial. Do not trust that by simply dragging and dropping the app. file into trash you have gotten rid of this beast (even though Mackeeper says you can).
    Ironically, I found this anomaly using the freeware GrandPerspective (1.5.1) http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/  and noticed a huge, very pretty, yet clear (not subdivided) block in the colored rectangles right away (the software was so intuitive, I simply clicked the block and then the “Reveal” button) and saw that my daily.out file (a file I didn’t even know I had) was at 10.3 gigs.
    The highlighted large light yellow area is my daily.out log file.
    (Note: you can give a donation to sourceforge.net if you think it helped you.) I find it ironic simply because I’m using freeware to free up hard disk space and speed up the computer, by getting rid of malware that claimed to do the same (Mackeeper) for a fee.
    Onward... You then need to go into terminal (something I’ve never done before... just be careful and unintimidated) and follow these instructions to delete or empty your daily.out log file. (cannot be done with a simple drag and drop to trash). I found terminal instructions for deleting (not harmful and will reconstruct) or emptying the daily.out files here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1229894
    After a try or two, this did not work for me somehow... (user error?) but this did...
    Some files are locked. In order to delete locked files, go to Apps/Utilities/Terminal, use Terminal command line :  sudo rm -rf    ...add one space after “f” then drag the file “daily.out” that grandperspective “revealed”  into the terminal, hit “return/enter” type admin. password. Hit “return” again.
    The files should delete. You will see more HD space (in my case 10.3 gigs... small these days perhaps, but can throw an almost full HD off). The daily.out log file should reconstruct on your mac’s next scheduled daily. Obviously, you should read your daily.out log file via Console.app first before delete to determine the problem.
    Hope this helps.
    (Disclaimer: I don't work for sourceforge, I am a mere musician trying to get the job done.) Thanks to all the other posters.

    Hmm. So your weekly and monthly clean-ups are running normally - I had thought there might be something wrong with them. It seems to be alot of kernel debugging entries that are making it grow so much. Did you deliberately do something to turn it on? You could try, in terminal,
    sudo rm /var/log/daily.out
    - it will ask for your admin password to confirm it. Then maybe do a system shutdown/restart to see if that kills the debugger logging. I don't know how to turn it off.

  • A question about class and interface? please help me!

    the following is program:
    interface A{
    public class B implements A{
    public static void main(String [] args){
    A a = new B();
    System.out.println(a.toString());
    }i want to ask a question, the method toString() is not belong to interface A, why a can call method toString()? the interface call the method that isn't belong to, why? please help me...

    because a.toString() call the method toString() of class Object because B implements A, but extends Object and in the class Object there is a method toString(). infact if you override the method toString() in class B, a.toString() call toString() in class B.
    try this:
    interface A {}
    public class B implements A
      public String toString()
        return "B";
      public static void main(String [] args)
        A a = new B();
        System.out.println(a.toString());

  • Question about MAXCPU and clearing data cache

    Hi all,
    We're running MaxDB 7.6.03.15 and have following questions. I apologize for not grouping them together with my earlier set of questions along the similar lines.
    1. What would be an appropriate value for our application for MAXCPU when running on a quad processor machine. The application consists of the MaxDB along with 4 windows services and an instance of tomcat. Can we use 4 for MAXCPU or does it always need to be something less than the total number of CPUs on the machine (less than 4 here?). Please advise.
    2. When we're doing query execution time analysis we need to be able to clear data cache in between query runs. We achieve this so far by simply bringing the database offline and then online again. The problem with this approach is its time consuming and if we do 100 query runs a lot of time is spent in waiting for the database go from online to offline to online again. Please let us know if there's an alternative faster way to achieve the same.
    Thanks for your time.
    Sincerely,
    Sameer

    Of course you may set MAXCPU to 4 - but you risk that the four Usertask UKTs will use up all CPU resources on your system then.
    So it is usually better to be rather defensive with this. If you're unsure about the CPU needs of your other services better try out and check starting with MAXCPU 2.

    Well, x_cons pagecache_release should do that for you.
    But I never was able to really see the effect of it (e.g. reading the pages in again).
    If I'm not mistaken in this point - which is pretty easy because the command is rarely used and sparsely documented - it just moves the pages to the lower end of the lru list and thereby making them candidates for getting moved out of cache but not actually doing it.
    However why don't you just use the resource monitor to figure out how many pages are touched by your statements?
    Then you don't have to bounce your instance.

    Lars

  • EMac screen shivers and blacks out. HELP!!!!

    i bought my emac in november of 2002 and its had the "raster shift" for a few years. it is only a few digits away from the recalled numbers. it is out of warranty and genius bar said it was a logic board problem. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I brought it to the Applestore. They did the repair, and since it was under warranty, It didn't cost me anything, but they did give me an invoice which showed what it would have cost had I to pay for it.
    Sorry it's been so long, I've been negligent in checking my posts.
    Good Luck!

  • Question on "MacKeeper"..Thanks for the help!

    Thanks to the members who sent me info on MacKeeper...bought it anyways...yeah I know.
    and willl check  out Onyx too..

    yes.  you need to buy a Snow Leopard retail disc (online or from the Apple store) for $29 USD.  Then run software update to get to 10.6.8.  Then access the app store and download Lion, also $29 USD.  Make sure your mac meets the technical requirements by googling "snow leopard technical requirements" and then "Lion technical requirements".

  • Question about Mail app and domain name please help

    Hi,
    I wasn't sure where to post this question so figured this would be the best area. I have a website which uses bluehost as it's web hoster. My email is set up through them, such as [email protected]
    In my Mail app, I have the POP thing set up so when ever someone emails me it goes right to the Mail app. It works great for my personal computer, but when I go to work and go on other computers is where the problem is.
    When I am on a random computer at work, I have to sign onto my webhosting site and then use squirrel mail. It is quite a hastle and is not the best. I would love to use gmail, but still keep my domain name I have.
    One co-worker mentioned just forwarding all my [email protected] emails to my new gmail email. There are issue's with doing this because if I'm at work and email someone with gmail it will use that email address. Also, I want to be able to read all my sent messages from any computer including the sent messages that were within my Mail app. Is this possible?
    Besides forwarding is there a better solution? It is sort of hard to explain. Basically I want my [email protected] address to be run through gmail, be able to access on any computer, have it be the only address in my mail app, and most importantly have the sent messages from mail app to be able to be read on all computers.
    I think gmail lets you make a domain name email, without gmail being included at the end. But I already have the email address made...am I able to just swap it? And keep all my mail inbox info?
    What's the best sollution for my problem?
    Thanks

    You would need to login to your web mail account to reply so that the email came from "[email protected]"
    I try to get a gmail address that is close to the domain name like - [email protected] - so that I don't have to bother opening web mail as it is a pain.
    I forward to Gmail and then Mac Mail because their spam blocker is the best.
    A lot of web mail addresses bounce mail because the capacity is limited and the owners don't go into their control panel to launch their web mail and clear out the old stuff. Lawyers, in particular, are famous for this. For this reason I don't set web mail to keep a copy of the forwarded mail. If my web mail gets full of spam and they start bouncing then its not my problem!

  • What's the difference between shut down and log out?

    Hi,
    I have a MacBook Air and will sell it.
    I like to take out my name but don't know how.
    What will happen if I Log Out (my name comes after that)?
    What's the difference between Shut down and Log out?
    Help please,
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
    The shut down turns off the Mac and a log out closes your user and take your computer to the log in screen. To sell the Mac, you have to reinstall Mac OS X erasing the disk. Open  > About this Mac and copy Version

  • How to clear out foreign divested entities at Parent Currency when have CFCTA?

    We have stopped loading some entities which we divested in the prior fiscal year (2013).  Now, in the current fiscal year (2014), the Retained Earning rollforward logic is carrying forward the prior year P12 ending balance.  We can manually adjust out the figures in Enitity Currency in P1 of current year (July 2014) and clear out the ending RE balance, but we still have RE remaining at Parent Currency due to roll forward logic.  Our journals in HFM always reverse in the next period, so it seems that we will need to forever more book an adjustment in Parent Curr Adjs to clear out the RE and the Cumulative Foreign Currency Translation amount.  Has anyone had a similar issue?  How did you remove all Retained Earnings at the Parent Currency levels when you got rid of a company? Thank you.

    Just about every application I've seen has always had some form of rule allowing for historical translation overrides for the equity section.  Some do it by allowing you to adjust the rate the equity is translated at, others do it by allowing you to enter the PC amount you want in EC in a seperate account (Dollar Overrides seems to be a common term) but either way, you'll need that functionality to accomplish this.
    Basically your rules are causing the problem(prior year USD copying across to current year USD), so your rules will need to be the solution.

  • Clearing out cookies...

    I use Safari and would like to review my cookies and clear out the redundant one.
    Is there any way of establishing (maybe at Fnder level or even through some Terminal command) the date a cookie was 'acquired', when it was last used and by which website?

    Hi JP
    I had already tried the cookies window in Safari's preferences. I was just overwhelmed by the number of cookies I had accumulated since August...
    Tom's made an excellent suggestion - tried it out a few minutes ago and it's better than I expected.
    And since you're into sound duplicates, I'm sure you'll get a kick out of:
    Bye,

  • Problems with bxslider and fancybox. Please help!

    Hi guys,
    I'm making a site for a client and have made a gallery using FancyBox. Everything worked fine until I implemented bxSlider into the gallery.
    The two are conflicting - although it seems that bxSlider has the upper hand as that still works (albeit out of position at the moment!)! The images using FancyBox just load the link to the image as if FancyBox wasn't installed...
    If you click here, you can hopefully see what I mean.
    Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get both to work?
    Thank you,
    SM

    I didn't see it the first time, you still have 3 versions of jquery. 1.7.1, 1.7.2 and jquery-latest.js (v1.8.1).
    The best way to get all of these scripts to function on the same page, would be to start with scripts written for the same version of jquery. I know 1.8.x had some issues (from a post by Nancy O.) and older scripts stopped working. It might be best to use 1.7.2 now that I think of it.
    You might be able to use 1.7.2 in place of the first jquery reference and clear out the other two references. If that doesn't work, you're going to need to find or re-write compatible scripts.
