Questions on scanning negatives?

I thought I'd post a new thread, as had some remaining questions and didn't want to hijack someone else's thread.
I'm embarking on scanning in all my previous 35mm colour negatives, and have so far learnt quite a lot both from experimentation and from reading threads on this forum.
Whilst I know there is no black and white answer to these questions I'd love to hear other peoples views based on their experiences and expertise:
1. What colour depth are people using . 48-bit or 24-bit ?
2. I have Epson V500 which has digital ICE technology for dust removal. It increases the scan time a fair amount and even the manufactures instructions recommend using only on frames that you want to improve due to this increased time. The problem is I want to set up a bit of a 'production line' so I can just get downs to scanning rather than inspecting each image as I scan. The question is : Is it better to do the dust removal at the physical scan stage or is it possible to achieve the same result with Photoshop? I've just had a quick play with Photoshop (never used it before) and the Reduce Dust and Scratches filter didn't seem particularly good doing this for a whole image?
3. As I'm no David Bailey, am I wasting my time (or rather Hard Drive) with TIFF files rather than Jpegs? As a point of reference, all my recent photography has been done on a Canon EOS350D which takes beautiful images that I'm proud of, but I store these as Jpegs (approx 3200x2200 3MB) so it's probably overkill to store my less quality film scans as TIFFs?
That said, I have plenty of external HDD's so as long as iPhoto is just as happy with external drives of TIFF's it's not a problem for me.
Anyway, many thanks for any hints & suggestions.
Dan.

Dan:
I would go without the dust removal (use a can of compressed air to clean the negative strip first) and use Photoshop for the touchup work. I use the clone tool and the Spot Healing Brush to fix blemishes. Granted it's more labor intensive but it would depend on how many of the negatives are needing touchup and how much time you have. If only a few then scan without.
If the ICE feature also fixes scratches and other blemished and you find you need it then you can switch to it. Unless your work is for professional use I'd go for 24 bit color and JPG format. Once you get the jpg file onto the HD and into iPhoto it will be preserved as it was scanned as a "digital negative". If you plan of doing a lot of editing of one file then create a psd file of it and use photoshop on duplicate layers. That way you can have multiple versions in one file.
When I retired I went on a binge of scanning over 5000 photos and 5000 slides. It took me 5 years to complete. I've learned a lot since then. My slide scanner was a one trick pony and when I was done I had a nice door stop. The new flat bed scanners do slides and negatives very nicely and can scan multiples of each and create separate files for each (my Canon does that).
However, as I'm sure you already know or have been told, put into place an efficient backup strategy. It's very important.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Scanning Negatives - File Size Error

I receive the error that follows while scanning negatives:
"Failed to obtain files from the device. The files size exceeds the maximum size allowed..."
What is PSE maximum size for scanned images.

    Hi Dave,
This is quite strange. There is as such no limit to the size of the scanned image.
To isolate the problem, can you please try this?
    1. Scan the negative using Windows Camera and Scanner Wizard.
    2. Drag and drop the scanned image onto Organizer.
Do you still get the same error?
    Thanks/Tarun

  • Color Cast Strips in a Scanned Negative

I have scanned negatives that show a couple of subtle color cast stripes.  In corrected space these show up as yellow, but in negative space they are only in the blue channel.  The stripes seem to be on the negative and not a scanner artifact.
Can photoshop mask for these areas and correct the color ?

Some cross-posting here while I typed up mine (I didn't see Trevor's posts), but I didn't have time to comment further.
Yes, scanned negatives can be a nightmare. I would never attempt to batch that, I just do the most important ones individually and put the rest back in storage. It's just too much work. However:
If you have many negatives taken at the same time that show these color bands, you can use the same adjustment layer(s) on all of them. The adjustment layer can simply be dragged from the layers panel over to the next photo; or you can make a preset. If it's a single roll of film you may not even have to redo the mask.
Another advantage of "painting in" the adjustment is that if you overdo it you can press X and paint back very easily. The example you posted took only a couple of minutes, with two layers - one plus blue to kill the yellow, and then one minus blue for the excess blue on the right.

  • How do In scan negative film to be able to see tiffs in Lightroom 4?

How do In scan negative film to be able to see tiffs in Lightroom 4?

LR supports TIFF format files up to 65,000 pixels and 2GB in size according to: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/lightroom/using/WS42D207D7-B290-4baa-A896-AB71965BF24B.html, so 70MB shouldn’t be a problem.
TIFF is a container format so the actual image data contained within could vary e.g. uncompressed, JPEG etc. Maybe the image data is incompatible with LR? I personally use uncompressed TIFF for certain operations so this is definitely compatible.
Do you have any TIFFs that can be imported? Perhaps you could compare the compatible and incompatible TIFFs using a metadata viewer such as the very excellent ExifTool by Phil Harvey (http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool)
NB Bogdan Hrastnik has developed a Windows GUI wrapper for ExifTool available here: http://u88.n24.queensu.ca/~bogdan/
Maybe the issue is local to your system and LR does, in fact, support the files. I’d be happy to try importing one on my system if you’d like to send one through...

  • How to change dates on scanned negatives?

I have a large amount of scanned negatives.
The date of most of the negatives are known.
How can I change the date in LR, or other program, so they will show up correctly - when sorted by date in LR?
    Tx
    Hans-P

    Thanks to you all :-)
I have tried tese methods and they works fine - but it is only the capture time I can change, not the METADATA date.
But at least I can now sort the photos, tested some.
In the LIBRARY view I chose Metadata (Library filter) and then 'date'.
The photos were sorted by the captured date.
So the METADATA date is maybe not so importent for sorting by the captured date? It is only updated/changed when you insert keywords or do some work on the photo.

  • Scanning Negatives with OpticFilm 7600i negative scanner

    Hi all,
I'm looking for a way to scan directly into PSE 10 with my negative scanner. Maybe a plug-in? I know it's unlikely that there's something to convert the image to positive etc but I'd rather spend time doing that than use the bundled software with the scanner (SilverFast). However, currently Get From Scanner gives me "Film Scanner" which either previews and scans black negs or doesn't work at all without Silverfast installed. Seems the only way to set it up as a TWAIN scanner (yep, got TWAIN plug-in) is to use a seperate piece of software like silverfast which is then launched to get the scan. Got correct and up-to-date drivers properly installed. Any one got any ideas? Thanks!

I have a Wolverine unit with similar (?) capability.
My workflow is to scan to the camera card in the unit, upload from card to a folder on the desktop, then enhance in Elements.
So, the question is: After you have processed in Silverfast, can you point to a folder on the desktop for saving?
Another thing, there is a tech note from Adobe that TWAIN is not installed in PSEv.10. You may want to review this to be sure that it is installed in the right place on your system if you want to scan directly into PSEv.10

  • Is Lightroom appropriate for scanned negatives and pictures

What little I have read about Lightroom assumes pictures taken with a digital camera. I have two digital cameras (Nikon D70 and Canon Elf IS 850) which give me reason to try Lightroom, and it has been recommended to me by a big-time photography acquaintance. Photoshop CS3 is what I am using.
I have hundreds (more likely thousands) of pictures I have scanned from old negatives and old prints (don't be surprised, as I am old and retired). My oldest photograph is an 1882 print of my grandfather milking a cow with my mother's comment in her scrapbook: "Dad can milk a cow!" Not surprising, as his parents had a farm, though my mother knew him as the owner of a small town hotel. I've a negative from about 1912 which I successfully scanned.
I have black and whites copied from my mother's scrapbook pictures, black and whites from black and white negatives of my children's youth, and color negatives from when color became affordable.
I think you get the picture.
The question again: Will Lightroom be helpful with these old pictures, be they from prints or negatives?
Your input will be greatly appreciated.

Nikon Scan V and Epson Perfection 3200 scanners

    Hi,
I'm using Lightroom for processing and cataloging scans of both old slides and even older prints, and find it very convenient to use. Firstly the develop capabilities are pretty good for adjusting white balance and tone curve either on individual images or batch processing (e.g. correcting a magenta cast or skylight haze on a whole box of slides in one go). My slide scanner does a decent job of auto cropping the slides though I imagine LR would be good for this if not, however I do have to manually crop and straighten scans of prints from my flatbed scanner, and the lightroom UI seems to me to be good for that also.
I have also converted my initial 16 bit uncompressed TIFFs from the scanners to DNG, saving a fair amount of space (~30%). Some would argue this is totally unnecessary as you could compress the TIFFs instead, but I find the conversion to DNG within LR very easy to carry out, and I also find it gives better (lossless) compression especially on the somewhat grainy 16 bit scans. Once I'm happy with all the color and tone curve adjustments I'll probably produce 8 bit LZW Tiffs to archive and maybe discard the still huge 16 bit DNGs (depending on the cost of storage at that time).
I think Lightroom is also very good for the task due to the integrated nature of the DAM and Develop tools - it doesn't force you into a fixed sequence of working (such as having to do developing before cataloging and other metadata operations or vice versa).
EDIT: I just realized you're referring to Negatives, not slides, so you might find the Develop tools a bit harder to use as LR isn't optimized for handling non-camera images especially negatives, though as someone else noted there are some work-arounds for handling negative conversion. However once you manage to produce positives somehow, I'd definitely recommend LR for further work.

  • ISE 1.x profiler question (Network Scan Action & Exception Action)

Could someone please explain the following based on this scenario:
Say you create a Profiler Policy called “DeviceBrandX” and you set the Minimum Certainty Factor to 20 and you create a condition to profile based on a check for condition based on host-name in DHCP and you assign the condition a Certainty Factor Increases of 10. In additoin you define an Exception Action and a Network Scan (NMAP) Action in the policy.
    Here are the two questions:
If you create another condition that initiates a scan Network Scan (NMAP) Action to scan say for OS - how does the scan influence the Certainty Factor?
Also if you create a condition that initiates Exception Action - how does that influence the Certainty Factor?
    Thanks,
    Allen

    Hey Tarik,
Thank you for the response; I have looked at the apple-device policy, I see that the “* Exception Action” field is = NONE. I only see that the Network Scan (NMAP) Action is set to OS-scan. In fact I have looked at all the generic policies and none have an “* Exception Action” field set.
I can see that under the Rules configuration you can set the rule to "Take Exception Action" but in the top part of the configuration the "* Exception Action” there is no selection option.
I am assuming if you wish to trigger and event you would identify the event in the “* Exception Action” field and under the rule you would select "Take Exception Action". How do you configure the “* Exception Action” to determine which Action to take?
    Thanks,
    Allen

  • How do i print from a scanned negative?

I scanned an old negative to my computer; how do I convert it to a positive image so it can be printed.  I am using Photoshop Elements 10

    Found this, it worked.
    Apply the Invert filter
The Invert filter inverts the colors in an image. Use this command, for example, to make a positive black-and-white image negative or to make a positive from a scanned black-and-white negative.
note: Because color print film contains an orange mask in its base, the Invert command cannot make accurate positive images from scanned color negatives. Be sure to use the proper settings for color negatives when scanning film on slide scanners.
When you invert an image, the brightness value of each pixel is converted into the inverse value on the 256‑step color-values scale. For example, a pixel in a positive image with a value of 255 is changed to 0.
    1.     Select an image, layer, or area.
    2.     Choose Filter > Adjustments > Invert.

  • Scanning Negatives

I'm now starting to use iPhoto exclusively as my photo library - (previously I would store raw files in folders - but starting to use the iphone daily to take pics makes the upgrade a no-brainer)
However, I have a couple of hundred envelopes of negatives (the small ones approx 2"by6" - about 5 pics to a strip) that I'd like to get into iPhoto. Does anyone have any suggestions for the best hardware and/or software to accomplish this?
I'd prefer not to have to spend hours at a flatbed scanner using photoshop or Vuescan if I can avoid it.
    Any tips welcome!
    Thanks!

What scanner do you have? I have a Canon 8600F which comes with a negative holder that holds a single strip of 5 negatives. The Canon software that comes with the scanner will scan and save each of the 5 negs in the strip to its own file. Then you'd need an application like Photoshop Elements that can reverse the image to produce the positive version.
Many scanners include negative holders and software to scan and separate multiple images at one time.
There are some dedicated slide/negative scanners but those are slow and after you're done all you have left is a fancy door stop.
The other option is to have them scanned commercially but that might be rather expensive.

  • Need printer for scanning negative/slides

Recommend a good printer for scanning pictures/slides as OX 10.9.1 does not recognize TWAIN from my HP Photosmart 3210 and can't use 3d market software, have to use System Pref/scanner. Very Limited.

since this forum is for troubleshooting Apple Software Update for Windows, a software package for Windows designed to update Apple products that run on Windows, and not related to Mac software, you should probably post your question in the OS X forums.
Otherwise, your best bet would be to probably purchase Read IRIS for Mac, as there is most likely no freeware OCR software for Mac.

  • Labview novice with a question about scanning strings

Hello, I'm a research assistant tasked with taking data received via TCP-IP and plotting it. I've had a couple of problems, probably because I've never used Labview before.
The data is sent in sets of six values separated using semicolons as delimiters, for example
"0.086842;0.00020341;0.00039838;-0.14057;-0.12614;-0.1327;" is one such data set
Receiving these strings through TCP connection is working just fine, however I just noticed that after passing a string such as my example into a 'Scan String for Tokens' block, the negative signs are dropped from the latter three values. I assumed it has something with setting '-' as an operator, but simply wiring negative sign in as an operator didn't change anything. I know there has to be a way to retain my negative signs, but I can't figure it.

    Is this what you need?
