Questions on temps and ide3 usability

Hello,
As you can tell I'm new to the forum. I've recently destroyed my Gateway for a great reason and have spent over 850 dollars upgrading. In the price includes a p4 2.4c ghz processor, 865PE Neo-2 board, 2 - 256 mb pc3200 ddr kingston memory (dual channel), Antec case, 300 watt Antec power supply, Geforce Fx 5700 Ultra 128 mb 4x/8x Vid card.
Now to my questions -
My hard drives are both different brands and different sizes. One, my primary, is a Maxtor 80 gigabyte Ultra ata 133 hard drive w/8mb cache @ 7200 rpm. My secondary drive used just for storage of data is a Western Digital 40 gigabyte ata 100 w/2mb cache @ 7200 rpm. On my board there are 2 ata 33/66/100 slots and one ata133 slot. My question is can I use the Maxtor hard drive on ide3 to utilize the ata133 and leave the Western Digital on the regular ide and boot from the Maxtor?
Second issue is this -
It's slightly in the process of being altered very soon anyway but..... My cpu is running at 48 - 52C at all times. My BIOS settings are DOT - General, Performance - Turbo/Ultra - Turbo with no extra overclocking and manual dram timings. Is the DOT and Performance settings causing me to have high temps? I'm running the stock speeds as well as the stock heatsink and fan that came with my new processor and using just the thermal pad and no thermal paste.
Thanks anyone and everyone who reads my post. Special thanks to anyone that responds
Brandon

So you're saying I need to reformat the drive and then go from there? Loading Windows Xp and installing my RAID drivers. That's not a problem but I just wanted to clarify things a bit.
As for core center, that thing is EXTREMELY buggy. I locked up my system many times just opening the program let alone changing any settings. DO NOT click the "Default" button on that program. Bad bad things happen.
I have speedfan installed on my computer but use it only for system temps as for the fact that I'm unsure of how to use it to overclock. I've never overclocked before so that's the major problem. I've also heard a program called "Coolbits" is one of the best for overclocking?
Thanks again.

Yes, you can use the 133 slot for your maxtor, but under certain circumstances only. IDE3 is on the RAID controller, so make sure when you install xp, it will ask if you need to install any 3rd party raid or SCSI controllers, you need to use that disk that came with your mobo for that.
When you go turbo on the DOT, make sure your FSB is set to 201, it HAS to be @ 201 (thx riley).
Make sure you set your ram voltage to at LEAST 2.6, 2.7 is preferable.
And dont even THINK about OC'ing w/ that stock Heatsink w/o any compound.
Check out some ThermalTake or Zalmon Cooling soultions and get some Silver Thermal Compound. Heat is the O/C'ers killer.
Also make sure to get the newest CoreCenter if your using that.
But i would use SpeedFan instead of CoreCenter, just pop in Speedfan @ google.

• Questions re frequency and temp of i7860 on p55 GD 65

Im using an i7 860 @2.8 Ghz on my MSI P55 GD65 mobo and whenever i start my computer it post that the cpu frequency @3.822 and in the cell menu the cpu frequency is also stated as 3.822 Ghz.
I use Real Temp to monitor the temp and the cpu frequency is also indicated and i notice that the cpu frequency changes from as low as 1,4 Ghz to as high as 3,822 Ghz depending on the load.
I am aware that an i7 has a Turbo Boost mode but I already disabled the Turbo Boost and disabled OC Genie in the bios and still it increases its cpu frequency to a maximum of 3.822 Ghz.
Is the constant change of cpu frequency normal even i have already disabled the Turbo Boost in the bios and what is the normal temperature of an i7 860 if it reaches 3.822 Ghz considering my room temperature of 35 C being a hot summer day. Temp reaches 60 C plus at 88% load.
I never activated the OC Genie.
Please help. thanks in advance.

You have not answered this question yet:

Have disabled the OC Genie Feature?
When you said:

and disabled OC Genie in the bios
You obviously talked about the BIOS Setup. When I am referring to "OC Genie" I am talking about the automatic overclocking feature that is enabled/disabled via the board's OC Genie Button(s). Please read the user manual section that deals with the OC Genie feature to know what I mean.

• Question regarding ScrollView and pageControl with multiple XIBs

Hi,
I am very new to iPhone programmming and OO type programming in general so please forgive me for my basic questions.
I am trying to set a paging scrollview up with each page being loaded from a different XIB and put into a view controller. This viewcontroller is attached to a scrollview that's put on a "Detail" view. I have this working OK with blank XIB pages.
My question is, when I start adding fields/buttons to the different XIBs how should I then process the actions etc. Do I create a seperate .h and .m file for each XIB and add the individual screen processing into the individual classes or do I use a single class (the "Detail" screen) and do all the processing in that class?, is that even possible?
I do hope that this makes sense. I'm still going through the basic learning books and I'm maybe trying to run before I can walk.
Any help is most appreciated.
Thanks

No forgiveness is necessary. You came to the right place.
I am trying to set a paging scrollview up with each page being loaded from a different XIB and put into a view controller. This viewcontroller is attached to a scrollview that's put on a "Detail" view. I have this working OK with blank XIB pages.
In case it's useful to you, here's a thread which shows how to use the PageControl sample app as the template for what you're doing: [Re: Flipping through views help|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10417960&#10417960].
My question is, when I start adding fields/buttons to the different XIBs how should I then process the actions etc.
The advice you have from thomas-r is right on target, so I'll just try to add to that. Firstly, I think you may be making a diligent attempt at "top-down" design, which is commendable. However there's a dirty little secret that working programmers don't share with managers: Quite often we don't produce the functional specification until we get the code working.
In other words, thomas-r's reference to Murphy isn't an insult. That's just how software gets designed.
In general, the decision to make a new class should be based on encapsulation and re-usability. For example when you get a memory warning, you might want to release all of the resources required for a screen that isn't currently visible. If that screen and its controller can be fully regenerated from one nib, this can be an easy task.
As another example, say the top-level controller is an instance of your ScrollViewController class. If you limit that controller to managing the scroll view and page control, you'll probably have a class you can reuse the next time you need a paging scroll view. But if you pack the functionality for multiple content views into that same controller, the class will only be useful for an identical app.
.. or do I use a single class (the "Detail" screen) and do all the processing in that class?, is that even possible?
So, no, I would definitely not attempt to put all the control in one class. Yes, it's possible, but besides being bad practice, it's awkward to implement. For example, when you make a nib which is owned by a view controller, it's easy to connect that controller's outlets and action methods to controls which are defined in that nib. There are ways to connect controls to an object defined in another nib, but it's much more difficult. It's not a "natural" configuration, and that by itself should give us second thoughts about our design. On the other hand, if we make one giant nib which is owned by the top-level controller, memory management goes out the window. We would need to unload everything in that nib to gracefully handle a memory warning.
Do I create a seperate .h and .m file for each XIB and add the individual screen processing into the individual classes ...
Yes. This gives us the reusability and encapsulation we want. The only remaining question is: "Do I need a separate controller class with it's own custom xib for each screen?". Well you may not. There could be two or more screens that are so similar (e.g. the same layout and functionality but with a different image) they can each use an instance of the same controller class and share the same xib.
I usually start with a different controller class and a different xib for each screen. Then, near the end of the project, I'll look at all those controllers and see if two or more are nearly identical. If so, I might get rid of one or more classes, and possibly one or more xibs as well. But I'd almost never assume I can merge two controller classes at the outset. If I did that, I might start adding kludges to the merged class as I found differences between the screens I hadn't seen earlier. When the merged class finally got too complex for anyone to maintain, the job of splitting it up might be nasty.
I do hope that this makes sense.
I think that's my line.
I'm still going through the basic learning books and I'm maybe trying to run before I can walk.
If you've suceeded in getting the skeleton working--i.e. you're paging through blank screens, each with it's own vanilla controller/xib, without any bugs, I'd say you're more than ready for the question you're asking here. And it's a very good question.

• Buying First Generation Air-Question of Heat and Performance

Do the first generation AIrs handle simple video watching OK and is watching video choppy? Also are the fans very noisy during simple and normal operations like word-processing or internet surfing, or do these machines easily overheat?
thanks

Hey all,
I own a first gen MBA for about 3 months now. It is a highly durable machine and has never let me down. I do all kinds of stuff, from office applications to video editing and even 3d rendering using 3dsmax in a virtualbox running XP on the MBA. I take it almost everywhere I go.
My experience with heat is, that the most important thing is to keep the vents on the bottom clear. All my slowdowns and heat related issues came when these vents where blocked. I can hook the MBA up to my 1280x720 projector and watch a movie or two without slow down-issues. I put it on the floor and the vents are clear. Temp and fans go up, but no kind of performance problems. If you put it on carpet or on your bed, the problems begin, as than the ventilation gets blocked.
But, to answer the threadstarters question: performancewise you can do anything on the MBA as you would expect to do on any other Core 2 Duo-CPU. It has two cores, afterall. Problems is: if you cut the airflow to it, one of the cores is shut down.

• MBP cpu temps and fanspeed help

So I have a MBP intle core i5 2.5GHz with 4 GB of ram, I thinkits either a 2008 model or 2010, I bought it new in 2010.
It has always gotten pretty hot, but thats what MBPs are supposed to do, I get it, but lately I have been testing temps and RPM with istat pro and rmcfancontrol and I think there may be a problem.
my temps all seem fine exceptmy CPU temp, which is regularly above 70 degrees. when doing semi extensive things like watching videos, streaming netflix or menial photoshop tasks, it is generally 80-85, with the fans around 3.5k RPM to 5K RPM. If I plug in my new 21 inch monitor (1920x1028 resolution) and play online poker, watch videos, or any design tasks involving adobe programs, ive seen it jump as high as 94 degrees, and im sure RPM atleast 6k, these may both go even higher as I have not tested the max yet.
this is usually when I have say an online poker lobby with tables going, a tracking software db running, skype on and firefox on. one question I have is, will tthere be less strain on the cpu if I drop the resolution of my new monitor? I dont want to drop it past 1600x1000 (not sure of the exact dimensions) because then it is defeating the purpose of why I bought a new larger screen with a high res.
second, I already run a desk sized fan on my MBP while it sits on an elevated pad (0.25 in approx) with 2 build in fans, left and right. The cpu is located just above the ESC button and that is where the heat is obviously centered so i place my cooling efforts as much as I can on that area.
my next question is, with fancontrol, how high can i force the fans to run and for how long while doing these kind of tasks on dual monitors? Can I set the left side fan to run at 5-6k as a default when playing a session of online poker (this is my part time job so its an important question) while leaving the right fan at 2k? or would it be better to keep them balanced? how long can they run at high rpm before it could cause problems? how long can my mbp run at constant temps of 80-95 degrees before it is dangerous for it? like I said it is mostly common for it to be between 75-85 at most times.
and last but not least, could this be a defect that it runs at such high temps? could it be my fans that are just plugged up and need a cleaning or replacing?
all suggestions are welcome, thank you

Of course. A smaller resolution will require less performance to your dedicated graphic card. Note that your Mac has got two graphic cards (an Intel card and a NVIDIA GeForce one), and your computer switches to the dedicated graphic when it requires more graphic performance.

We don't recommend smcFanControl because your Mac knows what's the correct fan speed and because this application modifies the SMC.
It's not good that your fans run at maximum speed for a long time (5000 rpm is too high). Now, the best you can do is to reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 If you have problems with the fan speed, this should solve the problem.

If the SMC reset doesn't work, I suspect two things: the first, that you have a hardware problem, and the second, that there's a process eating CPU and memory when you are using the computer, because those temperatures are not normal. Also, at that fan speed, they may fail

• Question regarding battery and warranty

Hi all! I have a quick question about how and if my warranty applies to my battery. After about a year and a half of ownership (I have the three-year extended warranty), my battery has gone completely down the toilet. It wasn't a problem before, but this year I have to lug my T61p around a lot for lab work. My battery is now rated at... 39.75Wh when it shipped at 84.24Wh. This is a pretty drastic difference. In any case, I don't think that this is covered by warranty, but figured that I'd ask before I drop $180 on a new battery (ouch). And, speaking of, if my suspicions are correct, does anybody know where I might find a 9-cell battery for the T61p? All I'm seeing on Lenovo's website is the one for the N100... which doesn't... match very well. Yaknow.
Thanks a lot!
ThinkPad T61p [June 2008]: 2.5Ghz Penryn Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR2 RAM, NVidia Quadro FX 570m 256MB, 160GB 7200RPM Fujitsu HDD, 1920x1200 WUXGA Matte LCD, Windows 7 RC1

Is either of these appropriate? I'm wary of the one on Amazon, as there are other (off-brand) batteries that are advertised as being Lenovo ones (though those generally sell for a lower price). The other one just looks like I'll have to call up to buy it.

• Question regarding roaming and data usage

I am currently out of my main country of service, and as such I have a question regarding roaming and data usage.
I am told that the airplane mode is sufficient from keeping the phone off from roaming, but does this apply to any background data usage for applications and such?
If the phone is in airplane mode, are all use of the phone including wifi and application use through the wifi outside of all extra charges from roaming?

Ann154 wrote:
If you are getting charged to use the wifi, then it is possible. Otherwise no
Just to elaborate here, Ann154 is referring to access charges for wifi, which is nothing to do with Verizon, so if you are using it in a plane, hotel, an internet cafe etc that charges for Wifi rather than being free . Verizon does not charge you (or indeed know about!) wifi usage, or any other usage that is not on their cellular network (such as using a foreign SIM for example in global phones) So these charges, if any, will not show up on the verizon bill app. Having it in airplane mode prevents all cellular data traffic so you should be fine

• Question regarding MM and FI integration

Hi Experts
I have a question regarding MM and FI integration
Is the transaction Key in OMJJ is same as OBYC transaction key?
If yes, then why canu2019t I see transaction Key BSX in Movement type 101?
Thanks

No, they are not the same. The movement type transaction (OMJJ) links the account key and account modifier to a specific movement types. Transaction code (OBYC) contains the account assignments for all material document postings, whether they are movement type dependent or not. Account key BSX is not movement type dependent. Instead, BSX is dependent on the valuation class of the material, so it won't show in OMJJ.
thanks,

• **question regarding 3G and wif**.

I have a question regarding 3G and wifi. I have #G activated as well as wifi, when I go to retrieve mail for example I get a pop up asking me if I want to connect to a wifi network…should I have wifi and 3G activated at the same time, and why am I getting the pop up…
Thanks

You can have them on at the same time, but they will not be used at the same time for data. The order of preference for data is WiFi > 3G > EDGE > GPRS. You're getting the pop up, most likely, because you have Settings > Wi-Fi > Ask to Join Networks set to ON. You can set that to OFF, and the iPhone will still join known (i.e. previously used) WiFi networks automatically.

• Question regarding Dashboard and column prompt

My question regarding Dashboard and column prompt:
1) Dashboard prompt usually work with only for columns which are in subject area. In my report I've created some of the columns which are based on other columns. Like I've daysNumber column that is based on two other columns, as it calculates the difference of two dates. When I create dashboard prompt I can't find this column there. I need to make a prompt on this column.
2)For one of the column I've only two values 1 and 0. When I create prompt for this column, is it possible that in drop down list It shows 'Yes' for 1 and 'No' for 0 and still filter the request??

Hi Toony,...
I think there was another way of doing this...
In the dashboard prompt go to Show option > select SQL Results from dropdown.
There you need to write your Logical SQL like...
SELECT CASE WHEN 1=0 THEN PERIODS.YEAR ELSE difference of date functionality END FROM SubjectAreaName
Here.. Periods.Year is the column which is already exists in repository's presentation layer..
and difference of date functionality is the code or formula of column which you want to show in drop-down...
Also write the CASE WHEN 1=0 THEN PERIODS.YEAR ELSE difference of date functionality END code in fx of that prompt.
I think it helps you in doing this..
Just check and inform me if it works...

• Questions on SPINCOUNT and Semaphores

Hello,
I have a few more questions on SPINCOUNT and semaphores.
1) The documentation states that SPINCOUNT = 0 (default) uses the spincount "built into the delivered binary".
- How can I find out what the built-in spincount is?
- What is the built-in spincount for a native client?
2) "Semaphore appears stuck" (Q_CAT 1447) is reported when the semaphore for a queue cannot be obtained.
- Does SPINCOUNT also apply to queue semaphores?
- What is the timeout for the semop? Ie, how long does a process wait before reporting 1447?
3) Is there a similar (to Semaphore appears stuck) error for other semaphores, such as GTT, AOM, etc)?
- If yes, what is the timeout?
Thanks...
Roger

Roger,
1) The default SPINCOUNT value is 0 (no spinning) for all platforms that are supported today. (At one time we had a default value of 5000 for Sequent hardware, but it has been many years since we supported that platform.) The SPINCOUNT value that will work best for any application depends on many factors, including the number of CPUs on the machine, the hardware platform, and the indvidual application. SPINCOUNT will only be useful when the machine has more than one CPU.
2) /Q logs Q_CAT:1447 after 50 unsuccessful attempts to obtain the semaphore when the semaphore has never been released and reobtained by a different process or the same process during that period. The Access Control List code uses the same rule for logging LIBTUX_CAT:1511. If TMSPINCOUNT is set, then the number of unsuccessful attempts to obtain the semaphore is incremented by 1 only after TMSPINCOUNT spins have been done.
Code for the BB semaphore and the semaphore used by /Domain follows a different rule. This code will log LIBTUX_CAT:5005 or LIBGW_CAT:5010 if a process has to wait for the semaphore for 10 seconds and the semaphore has never been released by the original owner during this time period.
3) TMSPINCOUNT is used for the BB semapahore, AOM semaphore, ACL semaphore, /Domain semaphore, and /Q semaphore. Locking the GTT uses the same BB semaphore that used to lock other tables in the BB.
Regards,
Ed

• Some questions on whitespace and &

Dear all,
I have some questions on whitespace and & that need you kind help:
1. Except /n /t /r and space, is there any characters that are whiteSpace characters?
2. When parsing XML document, when the ignorableWhitespace() method is called? Will it be called from characters() ?
e.g. Where the white space after is called, and where is the white space between test1 and test 2 indied is called?

test1 test2
3. When the & should be escaped in a well-formed (or validated) XML file by replacing &?
It should be excaped in any element content, such as test1 & test2< /b> - except for section?
It should NOT always be used in attributes? e.g. - has to do escaped by entity & - am I right?
Thanks!
Thanks

Thanks DrClap.
>
2. When parsing XML document, when the
ignorableWhitespace() method is called? Will it be
called from characters() ?It will be called when the document has a DTD and the
parser is a validating one that is actually
validating, when the parser sees whitespace that is
not part of a DTD element. It will not be called from
characters() because that is a method that you write.I wrote a contentHandler and using Xerces parser to parse an XML document. When I set validating feature to false, I found that for:

test1 test2The white space between and (including newline) is actually called from characters(), not in ignorableWhitespace(). So does this mean that if validating - white space is always called from ignorableWhitespace(), and if not validating, if it is always called from characters()?
>
3. When the & should be escaped in a well-formed(or
validated) XML file by replacing &? The XML Recommendation says "The ampersand character
(&) and the left angle bracket (<) may appear
in their literal form only when used as markup
delimiters, or within a comment, a processing
instruction, or a CDATA section. If they are needed
elsewhere, they must be escaped using either numeric
character references or the strings "&" and
"<" respectively."So in this sense, both & in test1 & test2< /b> and is illegal unless replacing them by & - right? What does the markup delimiters mena in above XML Recommendation ? Example?
Thanks!

• Few questions on Templates and Favorites

Experts,
Few fundamental questions on Templates and Favorites...
1) Can Favorites be shared with other users?
2) Can Templates be transported across systems (Dev or QA or PRD) ?
3) Can Templates be shared across planning area ( Yes, KF names are same across planning area?
Any insights appreciated!!!
Thanks
Krishna

Hello Krishna
1. No, favorites are user specific and are not shared. Templates are.
2. There are no transports in the traditional sense in S&OP. So a Template can't really be transported. What you can do, however, is open a Template in DEV, for example, then log off and log back on - just this time to QA or PRD. This assumes you have the same planning area, KF etc.in each system. Now you can add it to the templates in QA or PRD ... this is how you get it from one system to another.
3. I believe they are not shared between planning areas. If you make a planning area copy, I think they might come over but if you built a new PA2 from scratch, the ones you have in PA1 won't be there. If you want to get a planning view template from one PA to another, you basically follow the steps as in my answer to your second question. Again, for sharing a planning view Template between Planning Areas the attributes, time profiel and key figures you use have to be the same.
Hope this helps,

• Questions on photos and storage

I have a few questions about photos and storage... If you can just answer one of these, that's fine and thanks for the help!
How do I see how much space my iPhoto photos are taking on my hardrive?
I have Time machine which backs up, but concerned that I'm getting too many pictures. When I do "Get Info" on the hardrive it says 640GB Capacity with 254GB used. I'm assuming that includes all my photos, and that Time machine only backs up and is not the active storage for those photos?
What is advisable for available GB space on this size computer?
I have my photos on the hardrive and the time machine, is it also advised to have in a cloud-based storage system to be safe? Or some other place. Just checking what others do with this.

1 - it is a really good idea to start new threads with new questions - threadjacking a year old solved thread on a totally different subject will not provide the best coverage and the best answers
2 - Do NOT uncheck the option to copy imported items to the iPhoto library - it is a really, really bad idea that will create many problems for yo and has no advantages of any sort - see the user tip on file management in iPhoto for more details - iPhoto and File Management
3 - take the time to learn how to use iPhoto and the concept of using a database for management photos rather than a file based system like you are used to - it is much different and much more powerful - but there is a learning curve and a different thought process
4 - yes you can always export anything or everything from iPhoto for use on any other system - see the user tip on exporting for details - Exporting From iPhoto
5 - always remember that you never access your photos directly - iPhoto totally replaces the finder for managing your photos - see the user tip on accessing photos for more details - How to Access Files in iPhoto
