First let me thank all of you for the help over the last few days while im doing a student project on FCP which im taking a class for and learning.
OK, I need to do, as a assignment, like a text/graphic based car commercial. How can I change the color of the background that the text goes on? When I just select text it has a black background with white text. Also, when I highlight just a portion of the text it doesnt seem like I can adjust the font size just on part of the writing in the canvas (hope that makes sense). And how the heck do I pick a font, anyone got any cool ideas for font that kinda jump off the page?

In FCP's basic Text generator, you can't selectively alter font size, everything has to be the same.

To get around the single font size issue - and give yourself more choices for the cool font that you're looking for - press Control-Option-X to launch the Boris Title 3D text generator in the Viewer. Then see what your mind comes up with.

Exporting text from fcp

I have a lot of separate text boxes in my sequence. Since I can' t do a spell check in fcp, I was wondering if i can export all the text boxes out as a plain text document to do a spell check.
I tried exporting as a xml document, but navigating through all the tags was quite a problem.
TIA for any suggestions.

Usual workflow is following.
1. Put all Text-generator clips to one track
2. Export sequence to XML
3. Launch TitleExchange, point to exported XML and say where to put converted file.
Exporting to STL you'll get text file like that

... which you can open in any spell-checker.
We use TitleExchange to bring subtitles from FCP to DVD Studio and back (in case we need subtitled DVD and Betacam output)
Though, this may be much expensive way of checking spelling (135 Euro per TE licence).
There are lots of subtitle software, I only wanted to mention a way of exporting text from FCP with help of subtitle processors.

What is the best work flow to use? For example creating text in Motion, AE, PS, or AI and then bringing it into FCP.
I used Motion and the text looks jagged. I though Motion was vector based and I don't understand why the edges aren't crisp and smooth.
I'm just starting to learn these programs and want to create good working habits.

Questions about text alignment

Whenever I put a simple text into FCP, it automatically centers it on the screen, which is okay for small one or two word texts, but when I need to create a longer thing, it gets cut off at the bottom

I mostly use Boris Titl 3d. It is more advanced and gives nicer render results.
For FCP's textfilter: In the filter Controls there's a 'Origin'-control. If you set it to e.g. -80, the text will start at the top of your picture.
Is that what you are looking for?

Question concerning text

Okay, this is a very simple question if I remember correctly. I used to know how to do this, but I've forgotten and I can't for the life of me seem to figure it out again.
My question is: how do you make it so your text is transparent and you can see an image coming through it? I may not be explaining it very well, but basically I want to have text on a black background and you can see through the text to another image or video moving behind it.
Keep in mind, I do not want to use Livetype or any other program to do this. I'd like to keep it in FCP and I know it's possible because I've done it before.

Think of it this way...
Painting STOP on the street --
V1 - Your street level video you want as background
V2 - Your stencil -- white text you want 'paint' to come thru
V3 - Your paint level - what you want to show as the text
Change V2 to travel matte luma (I think)
Maybe V3... That's the part I get confused on.

Very basic questions on text/email

So I'm now convinced - with the 3.0 OS and the 3GS handset, the iPhone finally does all I want it to do and I'll be buying my first one in a couple of weeks.
Before I do, though, I have a couple of very basic questions:
1. Does predictive text only work in the SMS app, or does it work in the apps for email, writing notes, etc?
2. Can you turn the predictive text off? (I find it wildly irritating, because I know far better what words I want to write than a pesky phone does!)
3. Having email sent to a mobile is a whole new world for me! Do I need to subscribe to MobileMe at £££ per month, or is there another way of having email from my three accounts forwarded to my mobile?

It works with Safari, the Mail client, the Notes app, and with the SMS app.

You can access any IMAP or POP account with the iPhone's Mail client, and access multiple email accounts. I currently access to email accounts with the iPhone's mail client - my MobileMe account, and a business POP account. You can access all 3 of your email accounts with the iPhone's Mail client.

Subtitles can I use text from FCP?

Also, if I have a feature film that needs translation, what should I ask for? I mean is there EDL or OMF kind of file that DVD SP need? a

If you create the subs in FCP then basically they would be like burnt in subs you get on some films (i.e. you can't switch them off because they are embedded in the film itself). However, as Chris says, if you want to create subtitles that DVD-SP can use then create them as an STL file - this is an external file withy timecode refernces for in and out points for the subtitles and the relevant text.
Belle Nuit Subtiler can be used to create subs for both DVD-SP and FCP I think
Not sure that there is any software that "extract" subs from an FCP project though...

How can I get rid of "Jagged Edges" on the text in FCP?

Hi guys,
I am running FCP5.1 and I have a still image (.jpg) of a consumer product with the name of the product and the description on it.
When I view it in the viewer or canvas, I see jagged edges around the name, description and the product.
Even when I use the FCP text tool, I still see it.
Can someone help me out please?

what is the resolution of the image? highlight the jpg on the timeline and press option(apple)+9... this will bring up the item properties window... about half way down on the Format page you will see Frame Size... what is it?

N95 8GB Newbie question re Text Messaging

Hello Folks,
I live in the USA an have AT&T as a provider. I am just learning my around the N95 8GB. When I try to send a text message I get a screen with two window. One is label "Text message Center" and the other has "message center number" in it. Does anyone have any idea what to put in these windows? I tied calling the local AT&T store and they had no idea.
Any help would be appreciated.

I tried the remove the battery and SIM card suggestion but to no avail.
As mentioned in my first message, the guy at my local AT&T store seemed to have no idea what I was asking for. He said that all text messaging was "mobile to mobile."
Perhaps I need another source at AT&T or perhaps I am going down the wrong track.
If anyone else has a suggestion, please let me know. I am sure I am not the only one in the USA with AT&T who has faced this questions.

Simple question around text box action listeners....

Hi, I'm hoping there is a simple solution to this question.
What I have is a text box, by default it will be empty. what I'm looking for is Some kind of action listener to be kicked off when ever a user writes in the textbox......
here is a little bit of code i'd "like" to do....

You still have people totally confused about what you are asking. Some people think you have an AWT based question. Others think its a Swing related question.
Your question is about an ActionListener, but you code shows a PropertyChangeListener. It seems like you are asking about a Swing component, but there is a Swing forum for Swing related questions.
We are not mind readers. Ask a well thought out question and you will generally get a well though out response.

Problems Involving text and FCP

I'm working on of the motion templates and the text that I am adding in motion, when I open the same project file in FCP the same text gets moved and is no longer in the same position.

This is a screen shot of what I am talking about. Notice the light blue text (Usion T(X)ENTY) is no longer in the same location in FCP as it was in Motion. Besides this I have noticed no other differences so I'm thinking it has something to do with the text. Thoughts?

I sometimes get this kind of issue with fonts moving or not looking right in fcp or on export. I can cure it by building the effect in a different way. For example applying as fade behaviour will sometimes result in a pixel shift of the text in and out of the fade. But if i manually keyframe the opacity of the text its all fine. Sometimes shifting effects to parent layers and clicking their fixed resolution will cure it as well.

A Few SEO Questions: Alt="" text and file/folder names.

I've been reading about the Dark Art of SEO and frankly, a lot of it is more confusing than I anticipated. Anyway, I'll summarise a bit here.I have read that:
File/folder names are better with meaningful words and hyphenated words. so DCM000123.jpg in a folder called galimg would be better as: /gallery-images/painting-title-here.jpg
Alt="" text can add to the content of your pages.
My thinking underneath this relates to a gallery site I built with around 200 individual paintings in it. So the site has a lot of content but not a lot of text. I wonder if I should start trawling through all of this to change the file names and folders and add alt="" text more meaningfully to help with SEO?
So if my thinking is OK, here are the questions.
How would you put the alt="" text on individual images? I imagine that it should just be a straight-forward, what-you-see description? But there are a few other options. Suppose I have an image that the artist has titled, "Cattle on a Hill" and it's an oil on canvas. I could make that into,
alt="Oil on Canvas: Cattle on a Hill" or
alt="Cattle on a Hill" or
alt="A group of cows grazing in pasture under moonlight." or
Suppose I have 20 images in a portrait gallery:
alt="Portrait. Oil on canvas: Joe Bloggs" or
alt="Portrait. Joe Bloggs" or
alt="Man with grey hair wearing a blue shirt sitting on a bench" or

The second part of the question also includes the problem that if I have 20 images in a single gallery page and I put "Portrait painting" in each alt="" text is that going to look like key word stuffing?
Now on to the file name thing. Should the file names be portrait-painting-01 and so on or should they be Cattle-on-hill or what?
Final question: am I making too much of all this?

First of all, stay away from spaces in file names AT ALL COST.
The examples you cited would look like:
alt="Oil%20on%20Canvas:%20Cattle%20on%20a%20Hill" or
alt="Cattle%20on%20a%20Hill" or
alt="A%20group%20of%20cows%20grazing%20in%20pasture%20under%20moonlight."
to an SE crawler.
If you really want effective picutres, use Photoshop or Fireworks to embed metadata and THEN add them to your site.
Alt tags means the text that would appear if the image didn't for some reason. It also helps with accessibility for visually impaired viewers who use plug-ins to allow their browser to "speak" the images to them when the page loads.

Above is an example of how to add alt text. Dreamweaver actually loads the alt tag automatically unless you've turned it off somehow.
Either put the info in the Alt box in the properties panel, or in code view, add it between the quotes.
To the second part of your question, Alt tags are meant for SEO with the images only (Like when you search for images of a certain name or containing certain tags)
and really have little effect on the page SEO itself. For that type of optimization you want Keywords, and Descriptors in the <head> portion of the
individual page:

<meta name="Description" content="Page name, site name, business name, location, phone number, etc. goes here"/>

<meta name="robots" content="index, follow"/> (This tells search engine crawlers to index this page and each one you add it to, and follow them site wide)
<meta name="revisit-after" content="7 days"/> (This tells the crawler when to revisit for updates after it has indexed the site)
To your last question. No, you're not making too big a deal out of it, if you're talking about exposure for a business. If it's a personal gallery of your favorite vacation pictures? You just might be.

Question regarding text forwarding to groups.

I've started out last year getting myself an iPod Touch, which I was SO happy with that I then this summer went for the iPhone 3GS and just recently have gotten a hold on the new iPhone 4
I love the design, the innovation and the way things work and look and feel.
However there is one thing I'm really missing when it comes to what I consider basic phone functions, and that's that ability to send and forward text messages to groups of people.
Personally I use it for sending out jokes and cute texts to friends and family, and needless to say it's very very timeconsuming to add them all every time I want to forward a text I get or write one of my own to the 20 to 30+ people.
I'm thinking there are loads of other uses, both personal and business uses that this could have for other people as well, and my older Nokia phones have been able to do this quite easy and I'm wondering why it's not in the iOS software at all?!
I've searched the App Store and the internet for a solution to this because frankly at first I was SURE the phone was able to do it, and that I just hadn't figured out how to yet. But apparently from reading forums and helpsites that focus on the iPhone, other people around the globe have the same desire as me and have found it not possible with the iPhone.
There are a few apps that make group texting availeble but my problem is that most of the time I need to be able to forward the ones I get to a group, and that's apparently NOT possible with those apps
So my question IS, has anyone else here the same need? And has anyone found a solution or know if Apple plan to implement it at some point?
Because with all it's features shouldn't the iPhone above all else be easy to use? Make our everyday life less of a hassle? After all it IS a smartphone is it not? PHONE being the capital word here, texting I think, is a big essential part of what a mobile device should be able to do isn't it?!
Any way I hope someone here has a solution.

All that you can do with HTML can be done with HTML mails, namely making things 'Bold' ,'Italics', 'Underline' ....... I hope you get it. HTML mails are must. You have to support it if you plan to build a mail client.

Question About Texting on iPod Touch

Against my will I am being dragged into the world of texting.... that being said please forgive me if this is a "dumb" question but I'm a real "texting newby".
If I receive a text message on my phone ( not an iPhone )from someone that may, or may not have the same wireless carrier as me can I reply to that person using some type of texting application on my iPod Touch? If so, where can I find instructions?

I use a free app I downloaded called textPlus. The itouch will only be able to send messages with a wifi connection. The person receiving the message will be charged for receiving your text. But messages you send from the itouch will be free.

Questions about Text and headings CS5.5

Hey guys,
I have a quick question. I am currently working on a contact page for my website and I want to lay it out where the category of what you are contacting is in one font style while the email address (written beneath each category) is in a different font style.
Basically it would be like this
President (in brown font)
[email protected] (in smaller black font)
Vice President (in brown font)
[email protected] (in smaller black font)
etc.
I was playing with making the brown font categories h3 and the email address in h4. However they can't line up right because the fonts are different sizes so the space between each of the lines is different. Is there an easy to achieve this? I admit I am new to the program haha. Should I make the text in html code as opposed to using CSS?

You would never want to publish email addresses on your publicly accessible web site. Spammers will flock to them like white on rice! Eventually, the person's inbox will be inundated with spam mail.
For best results, build an HTML form that is styled with CSS.

Then use a form-to-email processing script in whichever server-side language your web host recommends. Ideally, your script should contain the email addresses (not the form) and have anti-spam measures built-in.
