Questions on use of freeze mode in Logic Pro

Hi,
I've noticed that the soft synth plug-ins are eating some of the CPU processing power. The bar is about a third of the way. I have frozen a few tracks but there are a few that don't seem to have the freeze icon in sight.
I configured the track header by right clicking a track and selected freeze. Only a handful of tracks offer me the option to freeze them. Is there a shortcut of freezing tracks individually? Also, besides bussing groups of instruments to an effects plug-in, what other solutions can I undertake within the production to save up on cpu?
The majority of the tracks are automated with only one delay designer on a snare and synth keys. The drumkit will be bussed to a multipressor.
Cheers

Instruments in Multi output mode can't be frozen, so that's probably what you're experiencing. Once you're finished with composing you can render/bounce CPU hungry Instruments, re-import the bounced files and play them back as normal Audio files, which will certainly free up a lot of CPU.

  • Questions about Novation Remote 25SL integration with Logic Pro 8

Preface: I have to apologize in advance if this seems somewhat confusing. I'm sure some of the terms I'm using are just plain wrong - I'm somewhat of a n00b.
I have a Novation Remote 25SL configured to use AutoMap with Logic Pro 8 from Novation's website and most things are working well. It's confusing at times because sometimes I find it hard to tell what mode the keyboard is in, but that's ok - it's the least of my worries. Based on what I've seen through reading the manuals and my own experimentation, I have a couple of questions:
    - Despite what the guy at the store told me, I can't seem to figure out how to select different kits from within the SL. For example, if I have a garageband instrument selected on a track - can I use the data/select knob on the SL as it is now, or do I have to program that somewhere, somehow? Or if I have Ultrabeat on a track, can I use the knob to select the different kits/banks?
    - Is there a way to control non-Apple AU plugins like the rest of those which ship with Logic? All the sexy looking ones like Ringshifter, Compressor, Overdrive, etc. It seems odd that Remote will go into Mixer Automap mode and be able to control the certain portions of the instruments, but not the plugins that are automatically loaded into the channel strip when the instrument is loaded.
    - I have a 25 key Remote. In Ultrabeat, I find the key maps miss a chunk of notes between where the drum pads end and where the keyboard starts (or vice-verse). Is there a way to get it so each key has a mapping? 25 keys in Ultrabeat, 25 keys on the board plus 8 drum pads - seems like there's lots of room.
Thanks in advance for all your feedback.

    Follow-up research:
Apparently there is a driver conflict between the AlphaTrack and the ReMOTE. So far I have got the ReMOTE working - sort of - in Logic using the following method which was published at Novation's Answerbase:
    1. disconnect the alphatrack.
    2. launch Logic and then turn on the ReMOTE SL.
    3. Go into the Environment window, and add a Monitor Object. Connect it to the Remote SL's ports 2 and 3.
So far, this seems to at least get MIDI note input into Logic, but the Automap function seems a bit sketchy so far. This will depend on Novation updating Automap and the SL's firmware for Logic 8.
As noted previously, there doesn't seem to be any AlphaTrack support in Logic 8 yet and it's up to Apple to make it work. They do support their TranzPort product, so with luck there'll be support in the next update.
I'd really love to use BOTH control surfaces with Logic simultaneously -- the AlphaTrack with the Mixer and plugins, the ReMOTE with Software Instruments. I suppose it might take some interesting mapping but this doesn't seem like that strange a setup -- there are plenty of "mixer surfaces" like the M-Audio one, and the Novation Automap stuff is quite popular....

  • Can't get Reason 4 to enter slave mode to Logic Pro 7!!

I'm using Logic Pro 7 and Reason 4 on a 1.83 GHz iMac Intel Core Duo. Also, I'm using an M-Audio Keystation 49e via USB as my MIDI input, and it works great with Reason when it stands alone.
Obviously, I load Logic first. But then, when I open Reason, it won't enter slave mode. If I use GarageBand as the "Master", Reason automatically enters slave mode when opened and works fine. I've searched the interweb over and had no luck. Any solutions? Thanks.

Ok. Disregard the last question. I have a new one. Turns out, all I needed to do was update LP7 to 7.1.1. Now, I have a new problem. When I try to open Reason 4, I get the message: "Cannot Open Reason Engine...Please reinstall to make sure the reason engine is properly installed". Not sure what to do about this one. Any help is enormously appreciated.

  • Can I use a US-122MKII with Logic Pro x?

    Hi All!
This is my first time on here so nice to meet you
My question is: Can I use the TASCAM US-122MKII with the new Logic Pro x on an iMac?
I've been using the TASCAM with my old Powerbook running Logic Pro 9 and it worked fine. Now however I can't get Logic Pro x to find it. I've tried scanning for it in the external interfaces section but it wasnt found. The iMac itself does find it and it appears in the system preferences sound section as an input. I've downloaded the latest software from the TASCAM website also.
I'm not very techy so may just not know how to do it.
    Any help greatly appreciated
    Brad

    Hi again Bill,
Something very strange has happened this morning. I was using Logic and thought 'I'll just plug in the TASCAM again to see if anything happens' and it just worked straight away. This is most peculiar as I didn't do or press anything to make it work. Yesterday when I was trying to get it to work, I closed the program and restarted the computer several times are making adjustmemnts but it just wasn't working at all. It seems a good night sleep has gievn it time to think things through lol.

Do everything audio after the midi is done.
What is the best way to use the potential of this Machine.
I usually have 2 3 bus where i put the effects and send the signal to them ,instead to have a effect insert on every channel.

  • Can anyone tell me the how to use the "ducking" process in Logic Pro 8?

    Howdy,
I've tried following the directions in the manual but I just can figure out the steps necessary to use the ducking process in Logic 8. For those who aren't sure what ducking is it's for instance, when you want a guitar track's volume to be reduced when a vocal track is active. As an example, there is a way to trigger the volume reduction in the guitar track(s) using a compressor in the vocal track. Whenever the singer is singing it automatically reduces the volume in the guitar track. I'm just not sure how to do this. Any help with the steps involved would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mark

Well, the theory is you run say, the mix , through the 'ducker' or as I like to call it, the 'motherducker', then you simply sidechain say, a kick drum. That is to say, you route your kick to a bus or aux channel, preferably routed to a different output, then assign that bus or aux as your sidechain input in the ducker. The theory is that the through signal will duck on receipt of the sidechained kick.
Frustratingly, this ducker is the buggiest thing since a bug landed on a buggy while loading it into the back of a VW bug. It just doesn't work. well it works for a bit and then stops working. Or the kick comes through the ducker as well. Or some other manifestation of complete crapness. Come on Apple, sort it out - it's the sound that everybody wants!
    Sorry Mark L1

  • Using a breath controller in logic pro x

    HI
has anyone ever configured logic pro x to work with a BC as to how to see the CC for the virtual instrument  the same as for the BC
cos when i use the BC the volume of the VI goes down quite a lot
    thanks

If you want a virtual instrument to respond properly to breath control, you will need to create an edited version of it.  This is assuming it is not a patch that is already designed to be played by a breath controller.
Most, though not all virtual instruments are set up for velocity response, like you would get from a keyboard or a drum pad.
Breath controllers, on the other hand, give you lousy control over velocity but excellent continuous control via breath.
Breath controllers may be set to send breath control (midi CC 2) volume (CC 7) expression (CC 11) or aftertouch.  Some simple ones don't give you a choice, some will allow you to choose any or all of these.   Usually using only one is the best way to go, at least until you learn more about it.
So, while there can be much more to it than this, the quick and easy way to re-program a patch for breath control would be to disable velocity response (however that is done in the VI you are using) and set a fixed velocity, and then assign whichever midi CC (continuous controller) you are using to volume or level.   Sometimes adding a bit of filter control can also make the patch more expressive, depending on the sound.
Then of course Save As....and rename the patch.
There are sound designers like myself and the much better known Matt Traum (Patchman Music) who specialize in creating sounds specifically for breath controllers.
If you don't want to mess with this yourself, pick a stock Logic patch that you would like to use BC on, and I will send you an edited version as an example.
I hope this helps.  Welcome to the expressive world of breath control!

  • Using a drawing tablet with Logic Pro, esp. for hyperdraw?

Is anybody using a drawing tablet, such as the Wacom Graphire 4, with Logic Pro? I am particularly interested to hear whether a tablet makes inputting hyperdraw data easier.
    Thanx and cheers,
    Vincent

Yeah, it changes everything — from selecting menu items, to turning knobs or moving sliders. You'll never go back... This is due to the fact that pointing and clicking are merged into one gesture, like playing a piano key takes care of selecting both the pitch and the velocity.
Be sure you get a small model though, not the big one that they use with Photoshop...
I find it indispensable whatever the kind of application I'm using, be it a text processor or an audio editor, whenever precise selection or action is required — to the point that I feel awkward when I'm forced to use a mouse.
By the way, people who are used to using trackballs feel the same — but this isn't true for track-pads.

  • Using Alesis MultiMix 16 with Logic Pro 9

I'm wondering if anyone out there has any experience working with the Alesis MultiMix 16 Firewire and Logic Pro 9.0? I could use some help getting them to work together...

Yes it is possible, first connect your outboard to the soundcard.....then load the I/O (inserts) plug in on the track you want to process....you can find it in the utility menu....then set the routing of the signal in the I/O window....if you want to record the processed track create a new track with the right routing and the work is done.hope this replay help you . • Using the Toneport UX8 with Logic Pro 8

I got used to using my toneport in Live 7 and now I've got Logic Pro 8 and I can't seem to figure it out. I connected my Roland Fantom X6 to my toneport and then connected my toneport to my puter and Logic recognized the toneport right away and asked me if I wanted to use it. I clicked yes, it changed my core audio settings and I double checked them. I can't hear anything. I had programmed a drum beat prior to attempting to record my keyboard pieces. Why can't I hear anything? and What kind of a track do I need to create to record my keyboard?
    Thanx =)

  • Using the MPK Mini with Logic Pro

Hi, I got an MPK Mini with Logic Pro.
At first it was working fine but I left it for a couple of weeks but now when I plug it in, Logic doesn't recognise it anymore.
I've read this http://documentation.apple.com/en/logicpro/controlsurfacessupport/index.html#cha pter=1%26section=1 but I still haven't been able to get it working.
    Has anyone got any ideas?

  • Who uses mobileme share/sync with logic pro?

    hi.
just wondering if ANYONE actually uses the mobileme sharing preferences within logic and for what reason... do you sync between studio and home/laptop or is it just a backup?
Im interested to the feedback people have on it.
    Cheers!

I use it, though only to keep changes I make to my Logic key commands in sync across the various Macs that I use. I have a desktop for the studio, and laptop for the road, and another desktop where I teach. It's possible to accomplish pretty much the same with a flash drive. But since I'm already paying for MobileMe to keep calendars, contacts, bookmarks and such in sync across each machine and my iPhone, I decided to use MobileMe for Logic's key commands as well. I haven't actually tried the "Backup all my settings on MobileMe" option, though now that your question has me thinking about, perhaps I should. As far as just backup/restore is concerned, I do use TimeMachine, and I periodically run CarbonCopyCloner (which I think is a great little utility!). But an additional off-site backup for Logic Settings via MobileMe would probably be a good idea. Thanks for inspiring me to re-consider!
