Questions on wiping and Backup

I have a user who needs to wipe their BB.  I want them to use Desktop Manager to backup everything.
Will the it backup even photos they have on the unit?

Yes...BES changes everything...the timing of things becomes more critical so that you don't accidentally wipe out things in the Messages database, especially if the user has any BIS email accounts configured... Let me remember how I used to do it with BES...it is important that device radios (both carrier and WiFi) remain OFF between steps 1 and 7:
Turn off all device radios
Backup (local to BB) BBM Contacts (not relevant if you restrict use of BBM via IT Policy)
Backup with Desktop Software -- full
Mass Storage Mode copy of Media Card and Device Memory
WIPE
Restore from Desktop Software -- SELECTIVE...only perhaps the configuration-type databases, but for sure NOTHING that BES will populate (contacts, calendar, etc.). If the user has BIS email accounts, then include the Messages database. Depending on what the reason for this drastic action is, you may indeed want to not restore anything...just in case something that you restore is the cause of whatever the problem was.
Turn on device radios and reactivate (as necessary) on carrier network
Reactivate with BES -- wait until this is 100% complete before proceeding (use WiFi if you can...it will be much faster).
Validate that all things are OK -- BES could have had copies of even configuration items...if so, it will have overwritten what was restored in 6 above...but that should be OK as they should have been accurate as of the last time BES mirrored those databases from the BB
If relevant, restore the BBM contacts from the file created in step 2...restore it from the PC (as copied in step 4) if necessary.
It's tricky...you want to do the restore before you allow BES to reactivate, especially if there are BIS email messages that you want to repopulate to the BB. If you allow BES to reactivate first, and then restore the Messages Database, it will replace any BES emails that came in between the two actions. Hence, the importance of keeping the device radios off (so that BES cannot reach out and auto-reactivate before you are ready).
Good luck!

  • Patching and backup process advice

    Hello all ,
I have solaris 8 and I had a few questions about patching and backup.
    1. Monthly I download the Sun 'Recommended and Security patchset", I then unzip and run patch_add.
When I review the terminal output while this is running I get quite a few :"unable to install patch exit code 8".
    Should I be getting this?
Is there another way of applying patches(other than individually)?
    2. What are good backup practices? Copy /etc and /var directories to a raid? Or is there a Sun tool for backups?
    Thanks for any advice!

I believe this is a list of exit codes for patches. You'll most likely see a lot of return code 8 and 2. Not typically an issue.
    # Exit Codes:
    # 0 No error
    # 1 Usage error
    # 2 Attempt to apply a patch that's already been applied
    # 3 Effective UID is not root

    # 5 pkgadd failed
    # 6 Patch is obsoleted
    # 7 Invalid package directory
    # 8 Attempting to patch a package that is not installed
    # 9 Cannot access /usr/sbin/pkgadd (client problem)

Back up your system before adding any patches (ufsdump). It's recommended that these patches are added in run level one.
There should be a script called something like "install_cluster" command in the 8_Recommended directory that you can use to add the patches.
By default the patches create backout info in /var, but I usually disable this (yeah, livin' on the edge) with the "-nosave" option.

  • Backup disk contents wiped and name changed

I have a LaCie Starck which I use - and have happily used for several years - as my Time Machine backup disk.  Recently it has mysteriously had all its contents wiped and has changed its name to "My Book".  What has happened?  How do I restore its proper functioning.  I've played around in disk utility with no luck.
Time Machine now also gives a message says it cannot find the backup disk.

Many thanks both.  The format was already Mac OS Extended, but I erased the drive and Time Machine now seems to be working again.  I still have no idea what caused this to happen.
Another drive image has also mounted itself on my desktop called "EFI" (see info below).  Goodness knows what this is. Another mystery.

  • Question about restoring a backup.

Question about restoring a backup. I want to restore an old back up to recover messages and photos. If I restore my iPhone with this old backup, will it delete any CURRENT text messages that I currently have on my phone? Same concern current photos on my phone. Thanks!

    Hello,
    I'm having a problem ....
My phone was giving me trouble and I had to completely wipe everything from it. I had backup on my PC , but when I connect my wiped phone back to my PC, it couldn't recognize it , so I got a question...something like "this phone is connected first time....do you want to authorize this computer...blah,blah" ,
but than I've got next question, something like "do you want to merge data or you want to overwrite your phone" and I've pressed "merge" by accident
Now....is there any way back from it? How I can get data from all apps back to my phone ?
All app's are there, but all of them are empty ! Please help!

  • My Mac HD was wiped and my TC wont acknowledge the previous sparse bundles

My Mac HD was wiped and my TC wont acknowledge the previous sparse bundles... How do I find the information? Also I can see all the previous back ups in Time machine but I get an error that claims I don't have access privileges to the files. Any Ideas.... Also I'm not that computer savvy so you'll have to use small words

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
    How/why was your HD "wiped"?
And what did you do next?
It sounds like you erased everything, and installed OSX. Did you then set up a user account? If so, that's most likely not recognized as the same user as the one on your backups, and of course one user, even an Admin user, doesn't have access to another user's data.
Your best bet is probably to do a "full system restore" from your backups, per #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum). That will put everything back exactly the way it was.
There are alternatives, depending on the situation you're in, but that's usually the simplest, easiest solution.

  • Following download of version 23.0.1 I lost all previous history but not bookmarks. How do I recover old history? Recovery in "import and backup" does not help

My remembered and retained history was going back quite a few months. Following update of Firefox to 23.0.1 I lost all my history and Firefox only retains websites visited after the new version was installed. My bookmarks have been retained. I tried Recover in "Import and backup" but it only goes back to the date of the new installation. I tried places.sqlite in "Roaming" but there is only one with today's date. Is there a way to recover the lost history? Why did Firefox lose it? Will it happen averytime Firefox updates?

Backup your bookmarks manually. If you have been using the "import" you may have already lost some information by overwriting it. As a matter of course you should always save current bookmarks manually before using any restores.
    * [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]
That way you can ensure you are able to restore the complete current set. Put your .json backup file somewhere safe outside Firefox program or profile paths. The Windows Desktop or removable media would be suitable.
Firefox does create some autobackups of bookmarks but does not do anything about backing up the History. Luckily Windows probably backs up previous versions of your file ''places.sqlite'' and that is the database with History and bookmarks in it. See if you can recover a recent version of that, it will restore your history up to the date of the restored file.
    * http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Previous-versions-of-files-frequently-asked-questions
    * the file ''places.sulite'' is in the Firefox profile, a hidden folder that is easy to find by using troubleshooting. see [[Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data#w_how-do-i-find-my-profile]]_how-do-i-find-my-profile
Afterwards import your more recent bookmarks from wherever they were saved. The import overwrites the slightly older bookmarks from the Windows file.
You my also then wish to install and run the addon places maintenance.
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
That may be used to check and repair the places.sqlite database. It will give a short status report. Note if the places.sqlite runs out of space it starts deleting History.
In future you my wish to routinely create occasional backups of your profile or at least your places.sqlite

Restore your media from the backup of the computer created prior to restoring the computer.
You did create a backup, correct?  Not doing so would be extremely unintelligent.

    Hello, mitcheb.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
The applications that were downloaded are licensed to this old Apple ID.  Any updates that need to be processed for these apps will need to be processed using this Apple ID password.  You cant attempt to reset that password for the Apple ID via the steps in the first article below.  If you need assistance with this, see the second attached article.  You can also delete the applications in question and download them again with your new Apple ID.  However, this will cause any application data in those applications to be deleted and you may be charged if these are paid for applications.

  • Time machine and backup

I have a quick question.  I'm pretty new to macbooks.  I just recently bought a macbook pro 13" and hooked it up to an external harddrive.  I used Time Machine to backup the entire system.  I take a lot of pictures so I've used up about half my hard drive capacity.  My question is....can I use the same external hard drive just to store pics and also as Time Machine?  Or...do I have to buy another external hard drive to just store pics?

Time Machine works best if it has its own, exclusive space.  If you want to put other things on the same drive, partition it.  See #3 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
But before you do that, how are you going to back up those pictures?  If they're in the same partition as your backups, Time Machine cannot back them up.  If they're in a separate partition of the same drive, when you tell Time Machine to back it up, it will send you a message reminding you that it's not a good idea to have your originals and backups on the same physical HD.  When (not if) it fails, you risk losing both copies.
If your pictures are valuable, yes, get another drive for them.  Format it for a Mac, per #1 in Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks.  External HDs are excluded from Time Machine by default, so go to Time Machine prefs > Options, select the new drive, and click the minus sign at the bottom to remove it from the exclusions box.  Then Time Machine will back it up along with your internal HD.

  • Implementing a file server and backup solution

Hi there - Looking for sage advice from the experts! Here's my dilemma:
I have a 1st gen Intel iMac, and I recently picked up the 13-inch aluminum MacBook. Both have 250 Gb drives. I have a fair amount of media and software using all but 9 gigs of space on the iMac. One more Final Cut project should eat the majority of that:-)
Before I start moving media over to the MacBook and run into the same space issues, I'd like to come up with a storage and back up solution that does the following:
    1. Provides one centralized location for all media (music, photos, video files)
    2. Keep back ups of centralized location AND backups of both iMac and MacBook--I don't want to lose any work in progress.
I'd love to hear how others manage this problem. Can a Time Machine solve the problem? Am I looking at a RAID solution?
    Thanks for your help!!

    Hi,
In a case where the same workbook is saved locally and on the application server and this error happens, what is the decisive factor? Meaning why does this happen for some workbooks and not for others? Is it a question of size, number of queries, other?
Do embedded excel functionalities and update links also interfere?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Fabrice.

  • Update Nightmare, Phone is wiping and scrubbing?!?!

    Good day
My hubby told me to update my new bb curve 8330, so I plugged it in and started. It kept asking for a password so I typed in the one I use to lock my phone. And well thats not it, so I kept trying and well now my phone wiped and is now scrubbing!!! What does this mean, how do i stop it?! Will I have a phone when its done or do I need to get help!??!? HELP!??!?

It was asking for the password you type, on the device, to unlock it after you have locked it (or it timed out and locked itself). You programmed that password into it along with the number of attempts for it to allow before wiping clean. You must type the same password when you tether to your PC. What likely happened is that the keys you press on the BB are not sending what you think they are sending -- CapsLock, NumLock, Alt, CTRL, or some other key modifier is present on the BB; you must replicate whatever that is on the PC keyboard when you tether.

  • EZ Media and Backup - all data disappeared

I have an Iomega EZ Media and Backup 2TB system I've been using for about a year with no problems.
Yesterday had a very strange issue, was having trouble connecting so rebooted with button on the back (pressed for under 5 seconds).
Drive shut down, hit the button again to turn back on, connected from laptop, all my files, about 1.8TB are gone!
User accounts, settings, directories are all still there, but all files are gone and picture at the top shows the drive as being empty.
Is there any way for me to recover this?
I believe everything was fine after upgrading to firmware 4.0.8.23976, but I'm not 100% that didn't cause the issue.

    Hi mattgaines,
Pressing and holding the power button is not recommended because it may result in data loss. I'm not sure if this is the cause since you said it was for under 5 seconds, but it is possible. It could also be the firmware on the device. Some customers have been able to get their data back by adding the shares back by the same name, but since the directories are still there that might not work.
Is this device still covered by the warranty? I think it would be best if you contacted technical support to see if they can troubleshoot the device to get the data back. However, data recovery is not covered under the warranty. If the data cannot be retrieved, you will have to use a data recovery service to try to get the data back.

  • Update and Backup

I am trying to update my iPhone to 3.1.3 and when it goes to backup it the backup stops at about 90% i saw one person say to delete the old back up but that can't be the problem because this is the first time the phone has been connected to this computer. I was also wondering how to retrieve all of my purchased music if my old computer got wiped and i end up having to restore this phone. Any suggestions?

Not sure what the problem is in this case, unless some of the data included with your iPhone's backup has some corruption.
How did your old computer get wiped without creating a backup of your important data first, which should include your iTunes library especially if your iTunes library included any content purchased from the iTunes store?
iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPod or iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only. With your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone. This should have been done before installing a firmware update with a new or different computer especially without having a backup of your iTunes library used to sync your iPhone on a another computer.
Unless you can stop the firmware update install process, you are in trouble in regards to transferring iTunes content purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from your iPhone.
