Questions Pertaining to Using Someone Else's Upgrade

Alright, well first off, I don't know exactly where this thread should be located. I only just made this account to make this thread and get this cleared up.
Anyway, well now that that's over, here comes some background to my problem. Back in late November during Black Friday, I was about to upgrade to an iPhone 5S, but last minute I decided that I wanted to try something new and got a Galaxy S4. It was pretty good, but being used to iOS for years, it wasn't exactly what I wanted. Also, later on I got an iPad mini with retina and that further made me regret my decision. Now with the announcement of iOS 8 and things like Continuity, I simply don't think I will be able to stand sitting with my phone for over another year.
My dad is eligible for an upgrade, and with him I have discussed using his upgrade so I can make the switch to presumably the iPhone 6 when it comes out this fall alongside iOS 8. Will we be able to do this? I would like for him to take my Galaxy S4 when I make the upgrade, and he didn't mind at all. Will it be possible for me to use his upgrade for the iPhone 6, and then have him deactivate his old phone and reactivate into my Galaxy S4? Are there any other solutions that would achieve the same thing, but be easier/simpler somehow? What would be the recommended way of doing this, going to a store or ordering the phone and performing the activation at home? Should I go to the store to have this done, should I arrive there with my Galaxy S4 freshly restored, or go there with my phone the way it is? I sort of would like for him to have his (my) phone as a fresh start when he first gets it.
Agh, and as I was wrapping this up, I realized, he has a data plan that currently isn't being offered anymore, where he can use 4GB of data for the price of 2GB. Will he lose this when we do this upgrade and renew his contract or will he still keep the 4GB monthly allowance for the same price of 2GB?

If you're referring to the double-the-data promo, your Dad should retain it as long as he upgrades to a 4G phone.
You could upgrade his phone to the iPhone, then move it to your line. Then you could move your S4 to his line.
You can order on-line and do the activations yourself, or go to a store ... whichever you're more comfortable with.
You may want to do a factory data reset on the S4 before giving it to your Dad so that he has that 'fresh start'.
Depending on the phone he currently has, your Dad may need a new SIM card for the S4 (the one in his current phone may not fit the S4).

An upgrade is tied to a line number. You will need to involve your carrier or the phones will arrive ready to be activated with your parents' numbers.

Ok so i have an iphone 4 reserved under my name today. If I go in I would like to know if it is possible to do the following. My dad is the one eligible for an upgrade, not me, so is it possible for me to bring him with me and use his upgrade to get myself an iphone 4? (he has an iphone 3G). He also has the 30$ unlimited plan and would like to keep that, while I told him I would be fine with just the 15$ plan (don't plan on using the internet all that much and will have wifi with me at college). I just had the same problem. And I found the solution, on Youtube.
The problem is that these ******** at apple designed the battery compartement, the distance between metal contacts too big.
That means the batteries plus or minus poles are not touching the corresponding contacts in the mouses battery compartement.
Most likely the battery doesn't get pushed up to touch the plus contacts.
I used a fingernail to push the battery up and tadaa, the green LED came on.
The guy in the Youtube video just put some folded aluminium foil under the minus poles for bridging the gap.

The apps you are trying to update were purchased with (and therfore permanently linked to) someone elses Apple ID. If you do not know the password then you need to delete the app and redownload/purchase it with your Apple ID.

Make a backup of your stuff (from the phone. apps/photos/music/blabla). Update your phone. The phone will restore the backup automatically.

Settings>general>resets>erase all content and settings.
That will put it back to its out of the box state. Set it up with your own apple Id.

You will not be able to use a SIM to activate a Sprint Phone. The Sprint phones are CDMA devices and would have to be activated through Sprint. Your best bet if you would not want to use Sprint as a carrier, and do not have any intention to use the device as a phone to return it for a refund. You would have to have a Sprint contract to activate this phone.

That should not be a problem if you wish to use other's apple id for your IOS device.
However, if in the future you need to update the apps, which is needed to be done from time to time, you need to have the password of that person's apple id as well.
It is better to have your own apple id for convenience.

No for possibly two reasons ... First, that's illegal as it's a violation of the Apple license agreement, and second, boot disks are locked to the system type they are delivered with. Ask your Dad instead how you can earn $29 doing some chores around the house, or let the word get out that for any holiday gifts in December that cash would be appreciated.
Since you're on Leopard today, you probaby know in wanting to move to Lion that Lion no longer has the Rosetta emulator and thus doesn't support anything with PowerPC code. That's surprised some, so just FYI.
