Questions re LOM configuration via ipmitool

Question

After configuring an Xserve's channel 1 LOM with the Server Monitor (and powering off/removing the plug to make the LOM reconfiguration to take effect), running the command
IPMITool user list 1
produces no output even though the Server Monitor does list the configured LOM user name. Is this (non)output expected?
Relatedly, I am trying to figure out how to configure the LOM with IPMITool rather than Server Monitor. The tool documentation seems to imply that one would use
IPMITool user set name <user id> <username>
to configure the LOM user. Assuming that one is interested in only one user (as effectively allowed by Server Monitor), what should one specify for the user id?

Sorry, I was copying a reply to another question and posted this to you in error.

Try using sudo before your command, as the tool may need to run as root.
I just tried:
sudo ipmitool -v -v user list 1
and get this reply
ID Name Callin Link Auth IPMI Msg Channel Priv Limit
1 true false false NO ACCESS
2 xxxxx true true true ADMINISTRATOR
trying to add a user
sudo IPMITool user set name 3 NEWUSER
results in
ID Name Callin Link Auth IPMI Msg Channel Priv Limit
1 true false false NO ACCESS
2 xxxxx true true true ADMINISTRATOR
3 NEWUSER true false false NO ACCESS
