Questions regarding my legally unlocked iphone 3G

Hi,
I recently traveled to livigno (in the alps of Italy)and i stumbled across an unlocked iphone 3G at an electronics store (not an apple store just a regular electronics store).
the guy told me that it was legally unlocked and that i could make software updates. but after what i've heard , i am not sure if i should take the risk and upgrade to 2.2.1 from 2.2
how can i know that it is legally unlocked and that i can update without the phone being locked ()bricked.
I live in malta and using it in malta.
Thanking you in advance,
Andrew

Thing is i dont know if he was authorised. And on the box, there was no name of a service provider on the picture of the iphone, usually there is at&t or something, thats why i think its legally unlocked, and the fact that when i plugged it into the computer. Itunes told me to activate it but not full activating with plans, just my itunes account and where i live

  • Question about Legally Unlocked iPhones & Update 'locking'?

Please forgive me if this has been covered before, as I am a totally newbie in this area.
I have a question regarding legally unlocked iphones:
If I bought an iphone from a country that offered legally unlocked cellphones like Singapore for example, and then used it/patched it up for the first time AFTER bringing it back into the US, would this 'lock' the cellphone to only work in the US, or with ATT?
The reason I ask is due to two points: A) I know that certain countries offer cellphones that were never locked to begin with. B) I have read that after installing the latest patch (2.2.1 I think) in the US, iphones that were previously locked and then unlocked, will be re-locked.
So my question is basically this: What would happen in the event that you update a phone that was never locked to begin with? Would it 'lock' for the first time? Or would it remain unlocked still?
    Thank you.

Legally unlocked iPhones have to be updated in the country where they were purchased to guarantee they are not relocked...Every country has their own iTunes -- When you connect to iTunes in the US you are connecting with a US ISP address on your computer. You would have a completely different ISP code in a different country.
Wait to update and see what others are finding before you attempt to update in the US. It is completely within Apple's right to relock phones used within the USA.
This is not the right forum site to get updates on this. A google search will bring up non-Apple websites where you will get up to date information about this.

  • How can I get a legally unlocked iPhone 3G in US?

How can I get a legally unlocked iPhone 3G in US? Where, How, And what is the total price. Thanks!

As has been stated, you cannot purchase an unlocked iPhone in the US. This kbase article indicates whether iPhones sold in particular countries are carrier-locked (in some cases, you can contact the carrier for unlocking).

  • Okay i just recently asked a question.about my factory unlocked iphone 3gs asking how to activate it but..

i probably shouldnt say this but, okay i just recently asked a question.about my factory unlocked iphone 3gs asking how to activate it. so i got too excited of aving it and couldnt wait for my tmobile sim card to come  one more day. so i "hactivated" it (i know this voids all warrenty) and i jailbroke it just so i could use it as an ipod.it worked and i was syched.
BUTTT.... it asked me if i wanted to update the software to 5.1 and i was like " oh yes id love to" and it started downloading it and it was inrecovery mode the whole time .
when the download finished. i hit restore so i can put the software on the phone but the itunes had an error and the phone went glitchy and it does a rebooting loop. it shows the apple symbol with the slash through it for about 5 seconds and shuts off for a little bit (about another 5 seconds) and it starts up  then loops the process. ive managed to turn the phone off but if i start  it up it loops...what should i do? any help :/
Also it does not show up in my itunes because it is turning off to fast to detect.

Discussion of hacked phones is prohibited on these forums.  Sorry, you'll need to go elsewhere to get support for a j'broke iPhone.

  • Legally unlock iPhone 3G

    Hi,
I'd like to know if there's a way to buy an unlocke iphone legally in order to use it in Brazil. I've heard that if we pay an extra fee we can buy it in an Apple store, is it true?
Can I ask an american friend of mine to buy it and then have it transfered to my name?

You can't buy a US phone for use in Brazil. The iPhone is coming soon to your country - http://www.apple.com/br/iphone/ - you just need to be patient for a little longer.

  • 3.1.3 update has crippled my legally unlocked iPhone.

I bought 3 Apple unlocked iPhones in Australia.
We have been using them on T-Mobile.
The Apple 3.1.3 iPhone update has disabled all internet connectivity.
    Can anyone please help?

First of all double check that you have got the right internet settings by going to settings-general-network-cellular data network, if you have ring your carrier to determine the fault is not from their end. if that doesnt work then my advice is to book a genius appontment at your nearest apple store. if your iphone was unlocked officially the new iphone the offer you will be officially unlocked as well (they take your details and authorise your phone to be unlocked) so when next you connect your iphone to your pc you will get that message your iphone has successfully been unlocked.

  • Question about buying an unlocked iphone 2g

Hey guys, so I have tmobile and Im using the blackberry. Ive had the iphone 3g before. Im starting to get back in the iphone mood. Ive been looking online for an unlocked iphone 2g. I am trying to be a little frugal and not spend alot of $$ but what im wondering is, is it worth it to pay the $200-$300 for an unlocked original iphone?? The newer iphones unlocked are really expensive. What do you guys think?? Cya.

"Let the buyer beware" applies big time when purchasing a used iPhone online especially an iPhone that has been hacked to be unlocked. This prevents installing a future firmware update since doing so re-locks the iPhone and the hack used to unlock the iPhone no longer compatible.
Hacking an iPhone for any reason is against Apple's license agreement for the iPhone, and is not supported by Apple directly or indirectly via these discussions.
An officially unlocked iPhone is expensive, but if such an iPhone is purchased new or used, the warranty and support is honored in the country where the iPhone was sold as officially unlocked only.

  • Can't view Cellular Data network on legally unlocked iPhone 3GS

I bought an iphone from Singapore and those phones come as unlock. Now that I am in the States, I was hoping to use my corporate AT&T sim card for data surfing and all. While I am able to make calls, it says that I am not registered for cellular data network. I was able to surf the web using the same SIM on this other HTC phone.
I was hoping to change the APN settings but that appears to be missing. How can I change the settings to that of AT&T?
    Thanks!

Do you know the data plan rate your employer is paying for your HTC phone or for whatever phone the data plan is for?
AT&T's enterprise data plan for the iPhone costs $45/mo.
Sounds like you or your employer will need to contact AT&T customer support.

  • Help with legally unlocked iphone battery

I called AT&T and cancelled the contract because i wtravelling and they unlocked my iphone 4. After the unlock, i noticed that my iphone's battery drains too fast and a 100% charge hardly lasts for 24 hours. Please I need somebody to help me in this.
    Waitng for responds.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Has any of this been tried?

  • (Legally) unlocked iphone locks again when in airplane mode

I unlocked my iphone from O2 and it now has a Vodafone payg sim in it which works fine. However - whenever I put it into airplane mode it says 'different sim inserted' and needs activating in itunes again. Any ideas how I can stop this? Matt

I've got the same problem; any time my iPhone is put into flight mode, or if I power it off fully, or if I let the battery drain completely, it needs to be reactivated via iTunes. Inconvenient at home, makes the thing pretty much useless if I'm travelling abroad. I'm using a T-Mobile contract SIM, so it's not Vodaphone, or the fact it's PAYG.

  • Legal Unlock Iphone 3gs 6.15.00

    Hi all
I wonder if there's an official store that can unlock my second hand 3gs with 6.15.00 baseband...
    Thanks

ONLY the carrier to which it is unlocked can unlock it - no one else at all.
You would have to check with the carrier to see if they offer this seervice.

  • Activating a legally Unlock IPhone 4S

Is it possible to activate an IPhone 4S without a Sim Card???

No, you have to have a sim card since it is a telephone...but you do not have to sue one with a contract if you canjust get hold of a working sim card.

  • Help!  Urgent question regarding a client's iPhone and my Mac

I have an office support business, and I use a Max OS X.
One of my clients has an iphone, and he wanted me to download his address book from his iphone onto my Mac so I could then edit his address book.
This morning, I plugged my client's iphone into my laptop to download his address book onto my computer.
The system said it had to download a new version iTunes (took over an hour).
After the download, I received a window message on my computer: *"iTunes has detected an iphone in recovery mode. You must restore this phone before it can be used with iTunes.*
I don't want to use the phone in conjunction with iTunes. However, the only option I have is to restore. No "cancel" nor any other option.
    *_My questions_:*
    (1) By "restoring" my client's phone, am I going to wipe out his address book on it and everything else that he has put on his iphone?
    (2) IS there a way for me to download his address book onto my computer so I can then edit his entries for him. And if so, how?
    Thank you for your time.

    You're welcome.
I believe (with about a 99% certainty) that my client originally downloaded his contacts from his Mac Airbook onto his iphone. However (and again, with that same certainty), I don't think he used "address book" - I think he purchased and used a different "contacts" software program (although, at the moment, I don't remember the name of it).
The only other application on a Mac that is supported for syncing contact info with an iPhone is Entourage 2004 or 2008 - part of Microsoft Office 2004 or 2008 for the Mac), which is synced with the Address Book.
    1) You mentioned "after the firmware is re-installed" . . . is this something that is done automatically during the restore?
When restoring an iPhone with iTunes, the iPhone is completely erased first. This is followed by the current firmware version being re-installed. After the firmware is re-installed, you are prompted to restore the iPhone from the iPhone's most recent backup - which is created and maintained by iTunes during the sync process. The iPhone's backup is updated if needed when syncing the iPhone with iTunes - if any of the data included with the iPhone's backup has changed since the last sync, which is usually 100% of the time when syncing. The other option available is restoring the iPhone as a new iPhone or not from the iPhone's backup. This must be followed by a sync with iTunes to re-transfer all iTunes content, and any photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone.
You don't have a backup on your Mac for your client's iPhone, and you don't have your client's iTunes library available, nor any photos transferred from your client's computer to the iPhone.
Currently, on his iphone, the screen shows an iTunes icon on top, and on bottom, it shows a USB port icon . . . and in between the two is an up arrow (from the USB port icon, up to the iTunes icon). I am not able to get anything else to appear on the iphone's screen.
Because something was seriously wrong with this iPhone for this iPhone to go into recovery mode. When in recovery mode, the only thing you can do is restore the iPhone with iTunes.
    (2) Will that ^^^ be corrected during the restore? And if so, will he have access to his iphone as it was before he gave it to me?
Restoring the iPhone with iTunes should fix the problem since the iPhone will be completely erased followed by the current firmware version being re-installed, but you don't have a backup for this iPhone to restore the iPhone from the backup, so this iPhone will be restored as a new iPhone only if your restore the iPhone with iTunes on your computer.
You need to restore the iPhone with your client's computer.
    (3) Does this mean, that if I do what I have quoted, then no data will be lost?
Depending on how often your client syncs the iPhone with iTunes on his/her computer. If a number of contacts were manually added to this iPhone by your client since syncing the iPhone with iTunes on his/her computer, these contacts will be lost when restoring the iPhone with iTunes from the iPhone's backup, and if the iPhone has not been synced with a supported application on your client's computer since any contacts were manually added to the iPhone, the newly added contacts on the iPhone will not be available with the supported application on your client's computer either.
    4) Also, how do I perform a sync?
After the iPhone is restored with iTunes on your client's computer from the iPhone's backup, you select Sync at the bottom right of the iTunes window with the iPhone selected in the iTunes source list.
Check this link - under the Getting Started section - setting up syncing.

  • HT4890 Question regarding uploading photos from iphone to icloud

my photo's aren't uploading from my iphone to my icloud.  What am I doing wrong?  I've got photo stream ON on my iphone but when I open my icloud account I have no access to pictures.  Help!

I think you are confused between Photo Stream and iCloud backup, which are two different services.
iCloud backup will backup your entire device. You are not able to access this backup from a computer, it is only used to restore your phone to its previous state.
    iCloud backup and restore overview:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4859
Photo Stream is a syncing service which will sync all devices set up with your Apple ID. It will only sync photos from the last 30 days, and since Photo Stream was enabled. Photo Stream does not count towards your iCloud storage space.
    Photo Stream FAQ:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4486
Older photos and videos will need to be transferred manually.
