Questions related to SMC and firmware update

In 2005 just before Tiger OS was launched, I purchased the iMac G5 which was introduced in Oct, '04. This is a 1.8GHZ-17inch iMac, and I would like to find out if there is any firmware that need to be updated.
I tried to reset the SMC - shut the computer, unplug power for 15 seconds, restart - and have not noticed any changes with the malfunctioning sleep function. When I click it to sleep it immediately shuts the system off.
I can't determine if this is caused because I never have updated the firmware, or because the SMC needs to be reset.
Would any required firmware update would also show when I run the update software application? If not, how can I find out if any firmware for the iMac model needs to be updated?
To reset the SMC for some computers one needs to open the system and reset a button in the motherboard. I don't wan't to do that unles I need. I also need to know where the reset button is located.
Your help and/or comments are appreciated.

I'll second that -- everything sounds normal -- Mac's just run hotter at times -- in real-life use, you will probably find it doesn't get that hot. Those tests are literally for the birds. Too many people in these forums give too much bad advise, and it leads to people being worried about nothing.
In general, you will do better with chat forums in other sites, rather than this help forum, because 99 percent of the people who post here are those who have some kind of problem, and rather than going to their apple store, they post and post their problems over and over here (and other sites).
The likelihood of you having any real-world problems are pretty much nil.

  • Xcode and firmware update problem

    Hi all,
i've been working on my app for a few month now and i have about two more weeks until i finally submit it. everything went very good during development.. untill -
by ACCIDENT i've upgraded my firmware to 3.1.2
since my OS is 10.5.7, as i understand, i must install xcode 3.2.1. but this version also needs mac OS 10.6
so it's realy frustrating for me...
do i need now to upgrade/purchase OS 10.6 and also my xcode environment in order to continue working ?
can't i make a rollback to other firmware version supported by my current 3.1.2 xcode ?
i've searched the net endlessly and just couldn't find anyway to downgrade my firmware (i have a 5.11.7 baseband and 6.2 bootloader)
    please...
    any help ?

    Welcome to Creative forums!
Try booting the player in the recovery mode.
. While the ZEN is off, press and hold down the play/pause button.
    2. While holding down the play/push button, push the reset button slowly using a paper clip/pin. You should feel the "click" sound when press it.
    3. Slide the On/Off switch towards the power button and hold it down until the recovery boot screen appears.
Choose Clean Up then Reboot. If problem still persists, you may need to format the ZEN but take note that formatting will delete the contents of the device. To format the ZEN, boot the ZEN in the recovery mode again and choose Format this time.

  • How to obtain software and firmware updates via CD

    Hello Forum!
Because I don't have broadband, I was wondering if Apple mails a CD w/ software and firmware updates.
I need the following updates according to Apple:
Java for Mac OS X 10.4 Release 5.0
    Airport Extreme 2007 1.0
    iPhoto update 6.0.6
    Battery update 1.2
    Superdrive firmware update 2.1
    iTunes 7.3
Mac OS X update combo. 10.4.10
    Thanks,
    Ryoichi

Apple does not usually provide updates via CDs to individuals. However, if you were to pop down to the Cincinnati Apple store with a blank CD, they'd probably help you get the updates. Or you could just use their own free Wi-Fi network to download the updates directly to your MacBook.

  • Zen 8G This device cannot start code 10 and firmware update problem

I have read the threads in the forums on the same problem that I am having. It seems that there are few solutions for this and the ones that have been posted I have tried. Basically the problem is this, I made the silly mistake of trying to update the firmware on my Zen 8G since it was listed as a critical update. I downloaded the firmware but it failed and took me to the recovery screen. Instead of working with this, again silly me, I tried to use the Creative recovery tool. This downloaded the firmwary and started rebooting the player. At this point it just hung. I left it on for about 3 hours and nothing happened and it wouldn't turn off so I hit the reset button on the player. Now when I connect it to the computer it recognizes it as a creative zen but if I try to download the firmware the software says the player is not connected when it is. When I check the device driver, even though it shows it as a creative zen it says "This device cannot start code 0"? I have the latest Microsoft device driver loaded and it still doesn't work.
I have tried this on two different computers, one using XP and the other using Vista. I get the same problem with each. It appears to me that the problem is not really with the device driver but somehow with the firmware. However, I am not an expert at this stuff.
If anyone could please help I would appreciate it. This was a gift for my wife for the Christmas of 2007 so it is just out of warranty and the service people won't help.

  • IPods and firmware update question

    It happened.
I wait, wait, wait and finally buy an 80gb for $350 and a month later 160gb for less comes out!
The only new feature I like is the album cover browse...text listing doesn't mean anything to me for over half my collection - I KNOW my album covers though.
Is there any plans for a firmware update that will bring my 80gb iPod the ability to operate similar to the new releases of today? I'd like the album browse feature on my 80gb...

If it wasn't so difficult and hidden to find out how to contact them directly, I would. Thanks for your answer! I hope it's wrong though...
To your knowledge, have they ever had firmware updates for any product?
Also, to your knowledge, do Apple reps browse these discussion forums? Maybe someone will accuratley respond.

  • Freeze at startup after System and Firmware update - Help!

I took the automated system upgrade last Sunday including updates on a bunch of Apple applications, OS X 10.4.6 (it was included if I recall correctly) and a SMC Firmware update. After downloading all files and installing them my iMac restarted. After that the SMC Firmware upgrade started and I followed the instructions ending in another restart.
This is where my problems began. At this startup I got through the grey screen with the Apple logo and got so far as to the blue screen with the Mac symbol saying something like "starting up". The progress bar started moving and froze after reaching about a fifth of its final length.
As this was a firmware update I didn't want to interrupt anything so I left it for the night (no progress in the morning) and for the next day. Still no progress when I came home from work so I shut it down (pulled the power cord).
Efter this I've tried to fall back using the Firmware Restoration CD available at Apple's support page, but this doesn't work. My iMac refuses to start the installation of the old Firmware even though I follow the fallback instructions. (After starting the computer and keeping the power on button pressed I wait for the front light below the screen to first flash rapidly for a while and then do a SOS (three short, three long and three short blinks). The SOS however, never happens, instead the computer proceeds directly to the grey startup screen before it freezes when it reaches the blue screen.
I have no clue to what to do. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

    iMac 20" (Intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    minxlj,
It is not my intention to be rude, however, it is my intention to be direct. Do you have a G5 or do you have an Intel Core Duo, or perhaps even both? Because right now your signature says you have a G5, which has PPC chips in it made by IBM, not Core Duo chips made by Intel.
The reason I ask is because, just as in another Discussion here in the Intel forum, you are responding to information that appears to not apply to the computer you say you have and you are giving information that, if you have a G5, does not apply to the computers of the folks here in the Intel forum.
Could you please clear that up by correcting your signature so everyone here knows you are comparing oranges with oranges and not mangos with oranges?
    Staffan,
As far as the SMC Firmware update and the Firmware Restoration CD, the two items are not related. The Firmware Restoration CD is only for the Firmware Update that came out in mid-April. It is intended for someone whose computer messed up in the application of the Firmware Update and is intended to bring their computer back to its Firmware state prior to the botched Firmware Update. It will not assist you if you had problems applying the SMC Firmware Update from early May.
If I am understanding your description of your Mac's problem it sounds if if you have successfully installed the SMC firmware update, but now have a possible 3rd party satrtupitem that is not allowing your Mac's OS X to fully boot. You can check to see if both the Firmware Update and SMC Firmware Update have been successfully installed by booting your Mac into safe Mode by pressing the "Shift" key during startup. This boot will take longer than normal because it is verifying and repairing your directory. After the desktop appears, go to Apps/Utilities/System Profiler. In the Contents section, highlight Hardware and Hardware Overview should show; Boot ROM Version: IM41.0055.B03 for the Firmware update and SMC Version: 1.1f5 for the SMC Firmware Update.

  • Macbook4,1 10.6.8 and firmware update - what went wrong?

Macbook 4,1 2008 2.4Ghz (not unibody). I recently reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled 10.6 from the Retail DVD and all seemed to go well. The MB was working fine up to that point. I then set up the MB (network, date and time, etc.) and repaired permissions.
I then checked Software Update and downloaded and installed the recommended updates to 10.6.8.
Again, all seemed to go fine. System booted and I repaired Permissions again. I went to the Apple web site, a couple of other web sites, and Software Update found another update to install: Firmware. Though I don't remember what version.
I clicked OK and it installed.
Upon reboot, it seemed to install okay.
But then I left the Macbook and it went into Sleep.
I didn't come back to it again until the next day.
When I pressed a key to wake it, I got what I now know is the screen that appears after you wake it from SAFE SLEEP. As per this Apple KB article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1757.
And this is where the problems started.
After the MB woke to the Safe Sleep screen, which shows the desktop a little "out of focus", the progress bars started filling in from left to right, BUT before they completed, the screen went BLACK.
And it has had a problem with black screen ever since. I can boot the MB from internal or external HD or from DVD, and it seems to boot fine. Boot chime, Apple logo, spinning wheel, then at the point where it pauses, blue screen, then goes to desktop, instead the screen goes black.
It finishes booting, but seems to go into Sleep.
I can wake it by pressing a key, but the screen either comes on and goes black again after 10 seconds, or I get the Safe Sleep wake screen, and then it goes black after 10 seconds.
And at boot or when waking the MB, the front LED flashes 5 times. There are no error beeps.
I've tried changing RAM, but problems remain.
So what's all this? Any ideas?
The display doesn't seem dead, as it works to boot and wake. The MB works fine with external monitor.
It's weird, but I can't think of anything apart from the Firmware update. The problems started right after installing it.
Unfortunately, this model of Macbook doesn't have a Firmware Restoration image to download and burn to CD. It is the ONLY Mac at this point that doesn't have this!
I called Apple support and even bought the 49 Euro Pay Per Incident service, which proved to be the same as throwing 49 Euro out the window. The only "technical" support they provided was to Reset the SMC, which you can find out about FOR FREE at the Apple website. And which I'd done anyway. I'd also reinstalled the MacOS. Don't want to beef too much, but sheesh, you've already got a Macbook that might need costly repairs, and they make you pay 49 Euro BEFORE they even ask you about the problem and what you've done to try to solve it. I'm tempted to say "ripoff". I mean, if all they can offer you is the advice to reset the SMC - which Apple offers for free at their website - then that's pretty poor service for 49 Euro, to say the least.
Apart from the wasted 49 Euro, I'm pretty peeved about the Firmware update (or so it seems) wrecking a perfectly working 2008 Macbook. I don't know how to convince Apple of this, but I'm certainly going to try.

    Thanks for the reply.
Re. the Displays setting, the Macbook display isn't recognized and mirroring isn't an available option.
I've scoured the net and the idea of replacing the PRAM battery may be something to try. I read a post by a guy with a Macbook logic board screwed up by a Firmware update, which he solved by replacing the PRAM battery, as when you disconnect it you reset the logic board.
    Which capacitor?
No luck so far with talking to Apple. I will try to get hold of someone a little more tech savvy and/or in a position of authority, as it seems that the Firmware is the culprit. Obviously a million other things could go wrong with a Macbook, but given the timing here it looks like the Firmware. Firmware updates can and occasionally do screw up a computer, as most manufacturers will warn you before you apply the update: PC makers, printer makers, etc. And they probably warn you that it's all your responsibility if anything goes wrong. But re. the Apple Firmware update:
    1) it came thru Software Update
    2) there was no warning
    3) to make things worse, there's no Firmware Restoration image that I can burn to a CD to reflash the logic board: this is the only Apple computer that doesn't have a Firmware Restoration option
I'll try to get thru to a manager and convince him/her that the firmware may have been the cause.
Do you think an authorized Apple tech might have access to some way to do a firmware restoration? Something not avaiable to mere mortals? Because if not, the only solution looks like a new logic board.

  • Pink tint after 10.8.2 and firmware update

I'm not sure if anyone else is seeing this but my MBPr is behaving very oddly.  I installed the 10.8.2 update yesterday and everything went prefectly.  I then installed the firmware update and all the other updates (iPhoto, etc).  This evening (about 24 hours later) many of the images on my screen have a fairly dark pink tint almost like I'm selecting them. I've tried re-installing the 10.8.2 combo update, resetting the PRAM and the SMC and have restarted a bunch of times. I attached an image to show what I'm talking about with the pink.
So far, I think the is the most buggy piece of Apple hardware I've owned. I'm also seeing some of the image retention issue and the left side of my trackpad isn't clicking anywhere near as well as the right side.  I guess I'll have to make the 50 mile trek to the nearest Apple Store this weekend and see if they can help.
If you look at the image below you can see the text tools are pink, some of the menu item icons are pink and a lot more you can't see like App windows, widgets, etc.

My display is working great - and I've been through the 10.82 update, the 10.8.2 update, etc., but no firmware update (your's was likely Retina-specific).
Your ATB should just be pug-and-play. Since you're still under warranty, I would contact AppleCare and possibly setup and appointment with the Genius Bar folks at your local Apple Store: something's not right - whether it's you display or your notebook.

  • Activation and Firmware update on ATV 3G failing

    Hi all,
I just purchased an ATV 3G and it is running 5.1. I actually just swapped the unit out where I had a 2G. (Moving the 2G to a vacation home)
So, I keep trying to update the FW and it kees failing. I've tried about 5 times. In each case:
The firmware downloads, It then goes to Step 1 preparing update. The progress bar completes on that Step and then I get a message that the Firmware update was not successful and it tells me how I can restart the unit.
When I go into Settings-General-About it shows the Activation as Failed (Skipped). I am hoping that this is related to the Firmware problem.
After these problems, I put my ATV 2G back and I was able to get it to update its firmware. (From 5.1.1)
After the 2G updated, I then put the 3G back and it failed again. (I used the same power, HDMI and ethernet cable for both, so it isn't a cabling problem)
I have no idea on how to troubleshoot these issues.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.

  • Security and firmware updated... Now no wireless network

Last night I did my security updates and a MacBook SMC Firmware update as well as the airport extreme update and daylight savings time update. After the update was done, I can't even see my old wireless network that I was connecting to fine before the update. SO... I checked my wife's ibook and it still connects, my pc still connects, and what really baffles me is that my macbook connects when plugged in through the ethernet, it just won't see it wirelessly!?!?!?!? The firmware update was version 1.1 and the other versions were 1.0. I looked at some posts and a lot were saying to repair permissions, I did, and nothing... I am still a newer user of macs, so please be a little more detailed in replies. Thanks!!!

Shame on Mac... here is how you fix this problem, saw it in another thread... hope this helps others experiencing the same problem...

  • Motion crashes - Macbook Pro Software update and Firmware update

Anyone out there that is working with Motion 3.0.1 on one of the new Macbook Pros (Santa Rosa) and has installed both the Macbook Pro Software Update 1.0 and the EFI Firmware update (for the 15 inch models)???
Motion 3 crashes on the Macbook Pros with the MBP Software update installed (see thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1028746&tstart=45
The solution so far is to wipe the hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch EXCEPT the software update 1.0. However, I'm trying to find out if anyone has installed the Firmware update, which requires the software update to be installed first, and if they are running smoothly.
    ???

I just restarted then tried to open InDesign again and it let me download a java update that seems to have fixed it.

  • Intel iMac 17"s slow - even after SU and firmware update

Just got 3 Intel iMacs (w/512MB RAM) to upgrade 3 users at my company, and have found basic startup (and later, opening apps) to be cripplingly slow. I have already:
    Run Software Update;
    Run the EFI Firmware update;
    Repaired permissions;
Run Repair Disk vis "fsck -fy" from the console...
The only things I have not messed with are the USB peripherals.
    Any ideas?

If you have the 17" iMacs with the 1.83 GHz chip you don't really even have 512MB of RAM. That model shares RAM with the video chip, which uses a minimum of 80 MB. Leaving only 432 MB, at most, for the Mac OS and any software you are running.
If you are seeing the spinning beachball of death you don't have enough physical RAM and the Mac is using virtual memory and constantly accessing the hard drive. You won't be happy until you have a minimum of 1 GB.
    Get more RAM.

  • Why does my retina MBPro and the projector go blank, when connecting with HDMI? This worked fine until the latest OS and firmware update.

Connecting through HDMI worked fine, until the recent firmware update and the 10.7.5 OS update. Now, both retina display and projector dosplay go blank, with the screen coming back when unplugged from the projector.

    Clone your system.
    Never apply updates w/o one.
And yes there is a page with all the Apple Downloads to do manually and then you can keep it on hand. Same for the OS X Lion or ML installer - save them before running. Still on 10.6.8 so you have OS X 10.6 DVD.
Combo updates do not do any harm. There could be issues to the drive directory beforehand.
Mac Pro has been shipping with Lion since summer 2011, though you can even now still reinstall iwth 10.6.4+

To make the change from MobilMe I will have to update fro System 10.4.11 to 10.7.2.  How many firmware and system updates will I have to make

First, see if your system can run Lion:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html
If you have any PPC apps, none of them will work under Lion.
If you meet the requirements for Lion, you can go to Snow Leopard(US $29), then update to 10.6.8, then update to Lion(US $29).
Apple says 2GB's of memory minimum. I wouldn't update to Lion unless you can run at least 4GB's.
