Questions sur Air Port Time Capsule!!

Does the Air port time capsule have to be permanently connected to the WAN input to provide a wireless network ? I have a wireless network in my house and where I want to keep my Air Port Time Capsual i have no WAN conectoin anywhere close!

I am trying to interpret your question.
I have a wireless network in my house and where I want to keep my Air Port Time Capsual i have no WAN conectoin anywhere close!
What you really mean is ethernet connection?? A LAN connection?
You would never connect the TC to WAN.. unless you mean to replace your main router.. !!
If you are happy using the TC as the main router or even as a bridge router and just continue to use your current wireless network, you would plug it into the main router whereever that is located. It doesn't matter where.
The TC can join a wireless network.. but it is seriously poor..
Here is how.. look at the screenshots here.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5719954?tstart=0
It is super slow.. it will cause the TC to become a dumb client on the network.. it will no longer have ethernet ports.. or a WAP.. just don't.

  • New Air Port Time Capsule Not Working With Old Airport Express

I have been running a home network comprised of a Air Port Time Capsule (A1254) and 5 ea Air Port Express (A1264) for several years with no problem.
The Air Port Time Capsule (A1254) died and I replaced it with an Air Port Time (A1470). Now none of the Air Port Express (A1264) work, all flashing yellow. All other network functions seem to work okay, Time Capsule Backup, Apple TV, Internet …
I am using AirPortUtility 6.3.1 for setup but do not see any way to setup the Air Port Express.

Reset the Express to factory and start over.. they should work.. are you using all 5 in extend wireless mode?
When you reset the Express click on the wifi icon in the top menu area.. and the newly reset AEx will appear in the list.. click it and Airport utility will open and attempt to automagically connect it to the TC.

  • Air Port Time Capsule, Sonos Play 1, iTunes, Apple TV

    Hi,
I'm looking at purchasing an Air Port Time Capsule 2TB and a Sonos Play 1. I'd like to run all my iTunes from the APTC to the Sonos Play 1 and the films onto my Apple TV. I'd like to do this without having to turn on my macbook pro.
My macbook pro only has a 500gb harddrive and is maxed out for space. Being able to do this would save having to turn on my laptop just to listen to music or watch a film.
Will this be possible or does anybody else have any ideas?
    Help would be appreciated
    Carl

Sonos may be able to play the music but you cannot stream the movie without itunes running. The TC is NOT a media player.. it is a dumb store for files.
With iTunes you have no choice but to run a computer.. but the iTunes can be stored on the TC if you must..
A large USB drive plugged into your laptop is faster, more reliable and can be backed up by Time Machine.. A TC cannot be backed up by Time Machine, it is slow and will have issues with the library and running iTunes.
It can be pressed into duty.. but will never shine.

  • Gmail does not work through Air Port / Time Capsule

I have narrowed down my problem with sending and receiving email to the Time Capsule base station. If I select the crappy Linksys router/wifi access point that is closest to my cable modem I am able to send and receive mail to both Gmail and my own hosted service. If I select the base station in my Time Capsule, which connects to the Linksys then I receive "imap.gmail.com is not responding".
Time Capsule is in Bridge mode. I have also tried putting the Time Capsule in "Distributes a Range of IP Addresses" too.
What's weird is that my mac is always connected to the Time Capsule and it is able to get mail without any problem.
Also, I have no problem accessing mail when I turn on 3G cellular data.
Problem is definitely with the Time Capsule. Thoughts?

This is most likely because you are using a cable modem.. please give the details of the modem.
If that is the case you need to power off the cable modem for a time.. 5min .. 30min.. 60min.. overnight.. indeterminiate. Each ISP is different. But the MAC address of the computer has been captured and the lease is only offered to that computer.
The TC must be in router mode.. this is assuming a pure modem and setup WAN port to the modem ethernet.
If you keep having trouble give exact network details.. modem.. make and model? Type of broadband service. and how the TC is setup.

  • Air Port Time Capsule Connection

I have just bought an AirPort Time Capsule. I have connected it to my router via Ethernet, and from my MacBook I can see the new Network. I can also connect the Time Capsule to my MacBook for back-up.
    Questions:
    1. Am I supposed to connect the Time Capsule as above, and should it stay connected via Ethernet to the router permanently?
    2. I now have two networks, the previous one via my router, and the new AirPort one: what is the difference, and which one should I be using?
    3. How do I use the Time Machine to back up my iPhone?

The TC should be in bridge mode and you should create a wireless network.
It is totally up to you if you keep two wireless networks running.. turn it off in the main router or use roaming type. ie same wireless name in the TC as the main router, same security but should be wpa2 personal and same password.
The TC should be connected by ethernet to the main router .. that is best for speed.
    2. I now have two networks, the previous one via my router, and the new AirPort one: what is the difference, and which one should I be using?
The old router one can be used as guest network.. for example.
Use the new TC one for speed.. as it should be a lot faster for most of your clients.. but for some old PC equipment for example the old router might still be the best.
There is no problems doing this btw.. just select yourself what works best. Trial and error but I think any Apple stuff will do best with the TC.
    3. How do I use the Time Machine to back up my iPhone?
Time Machine is Mac software.. it has nothing to do with Time Capsule.. nor the iphone.
iOS backs up to iCloud or iTunes in the computer.. your computer can then backup iTunes to the TC.. so it will indirectly backup the iphone.

  • HT1178 how to install a usb hard drive though air port time capsule

I am looking to connect a usb hard drive to my time capsule airport. The primary purpose of this drive is to create a shared drive between the three computers in the house, not for time machine. Is there any specific steps or procedures I need to know to make this happen? thanks.

Plug it in, click here, and follow the instructions. The drive needs to be formatted as FAT16, FAT32, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and may need to be connected through a powered USB hub.

Two questions, does resetting my Mac Book Pro late 2008 speed up after resetting? Also, do i need to get rid of my WLAN router to make my AIR PORT time capsule work?
    Am grateful for any answers...its a 15,4"...
Will soon buy a new one, is battery better on 13 than 15 "?
    Have a great day...

If you mean restoring OS X, that won't necessarily have any effect on speed.
Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow your Mac down.
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.

  • Should I set up my mac air or time capsule first?  Both seem to need each other

I got a mac air and time capsule.  Which sould I set up first.  I have tried setting up both but I seem to get stuck as both need to be set to to work together (of course).  Any suggestions?

Set up first the MacBook Air. When you have set up the MacBook Air, turn on the Time Capsule and open AirPort Utility to set up your Time Capsule

  • Hi.. I'm new to mac, I've got a mac book air and time capsule is it possible to save music, video from iTunes Store directly to time capsule leaving my 128GB Mac free? If so  please help..

Hi.. I'm new to mac, I've got a mac book air and time capsule is it possible to save music, video from iTunes Store directly to time capsule leaving my 128GB Mac free? If so  please help..

You can move your iTunes library.. Apple have explicit instructions to do it. If the library is moved to the TC and accessed over wireless, the efficiency of the whole system will drop dramatically..
A file you download goes.. Modem---TC--Laptop--Back to TC--Store on disk. Double looping the wireless slows it dramatically..
As far as using TC for your iTunes.. you CAN.. but SHOULD YOU?
    Store files on the TC.

This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
    5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.

  • Successfully restored my MacBook Air from Time Capsule

This is one occasion where the Superdrive is useless.
Here's why if you have an Air and a Time Capsule you should have bought the USB->Ethernet adapter. Don't leave home without it
Yesterday it seemed my Air got screwed up so I had to restore from my Time Capsule. This was non trivial at first because if you try to do it wirelessly it will take forever. This was a complete restore from the Install application not a selective file restore. It's not exactly clear how that's done but what you do is boot Leopard install DVD and then select under Utilities "Restore from Time Machine Backup" and follow the steps. Now the trick is that if you do it wireless it will take a very long time so in my case I wanted to do it over ethernet to the Time Caspule. Well doing that will take up the one USB port the MacBook Air has and you cannot boot into the Installer App via DVD and then remove the Superdrive thinking that it only needs the Time Capsule to do the restore. It seems to need to load more from the DVD during the restore step. So the only way this can be done with a device like Time Capsule is to use Remote Disk which frees up the USB port such that it can be plugged into the ethernet LAN port of the Time Capsule with the USB -> Ethernet adapter.
Doing it this way dramatically improves the restore time.
If anybody knows how this can be done over ethernet when you don't have another computer to use for Remote Disk I'd like to know about it. From what I could tell you always have to have the DVD available during the restore step which because the Superdrive has to be plugged into the MacBook Air's port only will take up all available ports.

I ran into this exact issue when I first purchased my MBA. The solution I came up with as is follows:
I partitioned my TM drive into two partitions. The first partition is 8gb and the second is the remainder of the disk. I made sure that the drive was set up to be bootable from an Intel Mac. I then made a backup of my install disk onto that 8gb partition again verifying that it was bootable. You can do this by creating a disk image of the install disk and then restoring that disk image to the TM drive.
I now have a full install disk on my Time Machine drive and can do a full recovery with just that drive plugged in.

  • Questions before I buy Time Capsule

    Hi All
I hope you can please help with my questions before I go and buy a time capsule. I currently have a 5 month old 2.4ghz mbp and a PC running Vista. The PC is connected via ethernet to a billion 7402GL and the mbp connects via wireless. I was going to buy an external hard drive to store data and I thought I might try the time capsule as it will be networked.
I am not 100% sure I know how time capsule works so any info would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to work out the setup in my head I have had a read through these forums but I thought I would ask specific questions in relation to my setup.
When I connect the time capsule to the billion can I still use the billion for wireless or do I have to use the time capsule? Also do I connect the TC to the Billion using ethernet or wireless? I want the mbp to access the data on the TC via wireless and the pc via ethernet. I will be getting an imac once I sell my pc so that will also need to connect to TC. I will mainly use the TC for storing data but I might start using time machine as well. Is it possible for a ps3 to access TC?
I will be attaching a printer to it so I would want to be able to print from any computer that connects to the network.
What would be the best setup? Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

If you already have a working wired/wireless network, and a spare ethernet port on your router, just connect the TC to the router with an ethernet cable. Turn off the TC's wireless, and it'll work fine.
No need to change any of your connections, you can carry on using your existing router.
Printing will work fine from any computer connected to your router (or to the TC, if you wish), but the printer driver needs to be installed on each computer, and the printer has to be one that works with the TC.
I don't think that there's a way of using the TC as a server with a PS3. The PS3 needs to see a DLNA server - I don't think that there's any way to get this running directly on a TC.
You can get a Mac to run as a DLNA server (application called "MediaLink"), and it might be possible to get the Mac to link to the TC. This way, you could access the TC from the PS3, but the Mac would have to be switched on for it to work.

  • Advanced Network Question - SSH tunneling through time capsule

    Hi!
I have a small question. I just got a time capsule the other day and things are working great with it. At home, internet speeds are what they should be and everything is fine. I replaced it with a linksys, which I consistently got 6.5/1 up. After replacing it, I'm now getting 7.5 down/1mbps up, which is what I am subscribed to.
I used to ssh into my linux box and tunnel web traffic over SSH so when I'm on the road, other's can't sniff my traffic. Basically, I setup firefox to use a socks server, then ssh into home with a dynamic port mapping.
On the linksys (wrt54g), this worked great, and the speeds were acceptable (about 1mbps down/1mbps up). However, after switching the linksys with the time capsule, it seems like the speeds have slowed down tremendously. I'm now getting about 200k down and 1 mbps up when I ssh and tunnel web traffic through my home.
I know that this isn't anything people normally do, but it works great and prevents people from spying on my web traffic when I'm away from home. I was just wondering if anybody has any ideas on why it might be slower now that I replaced it with the time capsule.
    Thanks!

Hello H Salk. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Enabling NAT on any Internet router, not just the AirPort & Time Capsule, will affect data transfer rates (in both directions) to devices connected either by wire or wireless to that router.

  • I have a macbook air and time capsule...

Is there anyway of using the usb on both the time capsule and macbook air to do a full back up as it takes ages wirelessly and the macbook air has no ethernet port to do this.
    thanks rob

Don't think so. The Time Capsule is looking for external drives & printers on the usb not Macs. Even if it saw it, Time Machine on your Mac would create the wrong kind of backup file on the capsule. If you have the drive connected via usb it'll create a regular folder with the backups. If you connect via network it'll create a sparse image bundle instead. So you can't even create the initial backup via usb and then transfer it to the capsule.
