Questions w.r.t KDE

Greetings,
I've been an XFCE user since the days of xfce3. Always loved lightweight stuff (I guess like a lot of ppl here). Never really liked KDE much after the days of kde2 (Corel, anybody remember?). Then there is KDEMOD. I said I'd give it another try. And I'm now almost sold. If I get a few more things done right, I think KDEMOD is going to stay. Enough background and now to the questions:
1. Sometime, when I launch an application (or indeed, send a file to an application), it doesn't come to the foreground like it should be. For example opera. Instead, the taskbar item flashes. This is a bit annoying I have to say.
2. I've got a OSX like panel at the bottom of the screen. How do I configure it so it would look like an OSX bar? I.e. when I move my mouse over to an icon, it would zoom out and everything?
3. I still use GTK programs. For KDE programs, I can configure that the application menu actually shows up as the top menu bar. I know it is probaly impossible to do but can the non-KDE application menu do the same?
Thanks in advance. Hopefully for the long-time KDE users out there this should be very silly questions.
Thanks for kdemod. It really is great!

1. Open kcontrol --> Desktop --> Window Behaviour -> Advanced. There you can setup the focus stealing prevention level... You can also set per-app settings by a rightclick on the window decoration --> advanced --> special settings for this window/program...
2. Look here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 99#p289699

  • Disk drives frequently auto-retract when ejected

Not really sure how often, it seems random. I'd say they do it about 50% of the time. Hoping for a fix It has been going on since I installed Arch a month or two ago I figure.

You need to give more information, please.
What DE or WM are you using?  What app or apps are you using when the unwanted disk drawer action happens?
Does it occur only after burning, or after any action?  Is it only with audio CDs or does it happen with data CDs?
Does 'eject' from the command line give the same behavior?
I figured this, but I didn't know what information to give, but its always just a question away right?
KDE. Usually none, as I tend to eject after I'm finished doing something. It doesn't generally happen after burning if it happens after burning at all.
I don't generally try to eject them if I haven't done anything with them, so I'm not sure. Mostly been handling video DVDs lately, but I've had plenty of issues with other disks in the past if my memory serves me correctly ... though I forget if it was with data CDs, audio CDs, or both.
eject from the command line gives this behavior, as does reaching down and pushing the button.

  • Two quick gnome and KDE questions

i dig gnome, wife and kids dig KDE we as a group only use one user account.
    so heres the deal...
when i make a change to the KDE desktop ( different icons, device, etc..) it effects gnome also. is there a way i can seperate their config files so that whatever i do to one does not effect the other ?
other question : i know that the Yahoo messenger thing has been fixed in the CVS version of Kopete. how can i make that happen ? can i find a PKGBUILD script for the cvs Kopete somewhere ? i think that it is just part of one of the KDE packages and i dont need to reinstall everything to get that going.
ok, any suggestions would be much appreciated..
    Arch Rocks !

-> is there some reason why you use only one user-account? i highly advice you to switch to a more-user way of using linux
the icons on the desktop cannot be separated easily (kde<->gnome), as both use ~/Desktop/.. structure (what became also standard and is also good being), so the best way would be to have more than one user
    kde? gnome? try xfce4 :-)
yahoo: kopete: hmm... earlier, kopete was a separate pkg (it was not part of the official kde-release), and it was very easy to rebuild only kopete on cvs --- now, things became a little more complicated: you need to rebuild kdenetwork (as far as i can remember), but as kde 3.3.beta1 (klassroom) is out, let's hope that some of the great users start a repository for it (some time ago someone from the comunity was running his/her own repository with the actual kde beta, but i was not able to find this thread - maybe deleted now)
you can also play around with ABS (see docs) and build your own kde 3.3beta1 pkgs and install them, but if you are a newbie, it would be a time-consuming, but learning experience

  • Minimal KDE Install & Other Questions

I attempted to install KDE, but aborted because of all the bloat that comes with it.  Being a tired Gnome user, I can't stand bloat.  All I want is a minimal, but usable KDE.  But I also don't want it to be too minimal.  Any advise?
I have a question about updates.  In Ubuntu, the system updated painlessly (most of the time).  Is it "generally" that way in Arch, or do updates sometimes break things?  I haven't been an Arch user long enough to know.
What is with the awful OpenOffice performance?  I have J2RE installed.  In Ubuntu, it was heavy, but there wasn't a type delay!
Last, but certainly not least - CUPS.  I can't live without CUPS.  I type and print out a LOT of school related papers (which is why improving OO performance is almost equally important).  I've been a Linux user for over three years, so I'm decently experienced.  I just can't keep up with the CUPS Wiki, though.  Are there any easier guides out there?  I print to an Epson Stylus Photo 825 (which has excellent drivers) that's connected to a Windows PC on the network.  I'm not sure about the host or printer name, which has been another set back.

    1 - install kdemod http://www.kdemod.ath.cx/
2 - Everybody talks about how Arch never breaks the system on updates, even if you have 600MB to update. There is only one change for this to happen. You don't read. Example: when arch switched to udev, pacman showed during months a message saying that devfs support was going to be dropped. So, the only "pain" is to read pacman messages after upgrades (that is no pain)
3 - OpenOffice performance is more than well. it boots it about 10 seconds. There's also no type delay. My brother switched from arch to ubuntu, and one thing that he misses from arch is the speed.
4 - CUPS? Just install cups, start the daemon and add it to rc.conf so that it gets started automatically on after rebooting.
    - To setup you printer: http://localhost:631/
    - To find your printer: (change the 192.168.0. to what corresponds in your network)
    for i in $(seq 1 254); do ping -c 1 192.168.0.$i|grep icmp_seq& done;

  • (SOLVED) Two KDE Questions

    1. How do you enable spell check in Kopete? It does not seem to want to check my spelling after I click the spell button or right click and select auto spell check. I checked my system and I do have aspell installed.
    2. How do I get a volume applet on the panel? I have used Kubuntu in the past and there was always a little speaker in the system tray section. This is not present with the current full KDE package which I have installed. How do I add it?
Thank you so much for your help!
Question 2 has been solved. Just start Kmix

  • Question about KDE and folder watcher

In the wiki says: KDE uses inotify directly from kernel using kdirwatch (included in kdelibs), so Gamin or FAM aren't needed.
In the startup and shutdown section of the system settings says that the "folder watcher" service isn't running.
I've notice that when extracting some files with ark, that the contents of those files doesn't appear until i press f5 (refresh).
KDE is really doing what it says in the wiki??

Since it's Snow Leopard, just reinstall from the DVD. Reinstalling entails removing and replacing the OS components and basic Apple apps, such as TextEdit, Safari, Mail, and Terminal, while leaving everything else in place. Quick, simple, and nondestructive. The only thing needed afterwards is running Software Update to catch anything release since your machine shipped. Once that's finished, launch Disk Utility, repair permissions, and restart.

No big deal, typo would be the first assumption before assuming the opposite.
Anyway, problem was solved here, but your answer is still vague, you wrote: *Reinstalling entails removing and replacing the OS components and basic Apple apps, such as TextEdit, Safari, Mail, and Terminal, while leaving everything else in place.*
But where and how does the DVD verify that your home folder is safe during the installation process is the question., i am sure your correct but if it does not mention this during the process how much weight can that give anyone to say go ahead and over write all your files.

  • Trivial question about KDE

    Hi Folks,
sorry for the question - but after I installes on a Debian host some X-Apps and run them via SGD4.0 like a charm I also though about using a full Desktop envieronment on this box.
But using "stratx" was not the way - as I got ton's of KDE complaintes....
Please direct me to a propper howto (since these SUN pages make it not really easy to find info's) or just let me know how to start a desktop via SGD
    thanx

    Hi.
    What about startkde?
On my SuSE Linux box, it's under /opt/kde3/bin.

  • [KDE] font and hotkey question

    Hello,
I have two small problems with my notebook using KDE 4.2.
First I changed the font for everything from Sans Serif to DejaVu Sans (in the Control Center). But there is no visible change. Where is the problem?
The second small thing is a problem with my multimedia key for muting my soundspeaker. It then should glow until I unmute it by pressing the key again. But presently it stop glowing after several setting.
    Thanks for your help.

One last question, just for interess. Why isn't it possible to change the font of the fixed width into something normal instead of using such ugly fonts like monotype, terminal etc?
I mean that font represents the whole desktop, menus of okular or dolophin - I would prefer to change them into for example Verdana to have one font for all.
I tried that several times on diverse WM/DMs. It is not worth the effort.
    - Some applications select a font based on the monospaced property. There is no chance to select a varying spaced font at all.
    - Variable spaced fonts distort any tabular layout based on fixed spacing, e.g. man pages, which makes them less apprehensible.
Better try to find a good looking monospaced fonts suiting your preferences. I currently use DejaVu Sans Mono and am very pleased with it. And in the Xterms I extensively use in my IceWM system I even use lucidatypewriter, which is rather ugly but best readable in as small as possible windows. Thus it all depends on your current needs.

  • KDE Activity Question

I just retried KDE and found it's activity feature which is really amazing. I found a couple of problems though, one was that after I logged back in one of my activities had been duplicated many times but each one was empty. I found a bug report on that though.
Another question I have is about the closing activities. I understand that when an activity is close all its programs are closed. However, some programs aren't closed even if they are only on that one activity (They are running in the background when the activity is closed, I first noticed it by the way it was instantly resumed). The only consistent example I have right now is monodevelop, but I think one of my web browsers did it too. Is this actually a feature for programs that aren't integrated well so that you do not lose your state? Is there a way to change it? Or is it just a bug? The largest reason I would want to change this is because I might close my activity, which is to be resumed later, then restart my computer. The other reason is that if it's a large program I don't want it running in the background.

jayson_r wrote:Yes, I read it - that's where I picked up that 'kde-meta' keeps up with new packages added to KDE. I guess the point of my question is, if I install kde-meta now, after having installed KDE, will it work the same way, and/or break anything in the future?
    Short answer: yes.
Long answer: package management isn't all too complicated, you can read up in the wiki and man pages for pacman about it. Order of installation should not usually matter except in special cases (of course, dependencies are needed before the packages which depend on them).

  • XFCE and KDE question

Would there be any conflicts if XFCE and KDE were both installed at the same time or would it be wiser to remove KDE before installing XFCE?

You'll probably be fine. Both programs can edit desktop files which can effect the other. I'm not sure how KDE handles mime types though. If it uses the same database, that could cause one to effect the other.

  • [SOLVED] KDE Applet Question

    Hi All,
I have read the Arch wiki KDE page several times now and there is something I just can't work out.
I have NetworkManager installed (not KnetworkManager).
    I also have kdeplasma-applet-networkmanagement installed.
    however, I can't any applet's working.
typing nm-applet returns command not found at the terminal.
and I have no /etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet.desktop file...
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
    Many Thanks
Last edited by Sidhartha (2012-01-28 17:54:34)

nm-applet is gnome's network-manager-applet. kdeplasma-applet-networkmanagement works like other plasma applets - you have to add it to the panel or the notification area.

  • Question about building QT for KDE

I'd like to build my own version of QT for KDE, and I noticed that the PKGBUILD in ABS checks out kde-qt git, creates a patch from 4.5.3 to 4.5.3-patched, then applies that patch to qt-4.5.3.  Is there some reason this is done instead of just building kde-qt 4.5.3-patched directly?  It seems to me it's the exact same thing.

Nevermind, I figured it out.  Yes, it is the same thing, though it turns out I don't actually need to build qt anyway...

  • KDE 4.1 and installation questions.

    Hi,
I want to move up to Arch from Mint and PCLOS but the installation routine has me a little apprehensive. I always read reviews of Arch Linux and sometimes the reviewers give the impression that the installation is not for newbies. I am not a newbie anymore but I don't have a lot of time to tinker or learn - just the facts.
So, Is the installation process challenging for the averagely intelligent person  with some Linux experience with the easier distros like Mint and PCLOS ? Also, how is KDE 4.1 working out on Arch ? I would definitely like to try it if it is up to snuff now. I read that 4.0 release was pretty bad.
    Thanks,
    B.

The documentation for installing Arch is pretty good.  I found that I did have to hunt around a bit at times to get everything set up, but it is all there if you look.  You can be up and running quite quickly if you know what you're doing.  If you don't, you might be in for a long afternoon.
The main difference between an Arch installation and say, PCLOS, is that with PCLOS, the install is always going to end up with a KDE desktop, KDM, sound, etc, so they can automate most of the process for you.  Arch is completely ala carte, so to get a KDE workstation, you have to do the base install, add a user and configure them, install X, add support for your graphics card, configure support for sound, install HAL, install KDE, install KDE applications, set up and configure networking, and then install KDM (and I'm sure I'm leaving some stuff out).
Again, there is documentation for doing all of the above, BUT if you haven't done it before and you do things out of order, or can't figure out one of the steps, you can get stuck for a very long time.
What was your reason for wanting to ditch PCLOS in the first place?  Just something different or did you have something in mind?

  • KDE 3.5.4 question SOLVED

This issue was solved by just waiting for the mirrors to sync with the new kdebase 3.5.4.
I'm sure I'm doing something stupid here;)
I see 3.5.4 is in the extra repo. When I run pacman  -S kdebase it says I'm current (including extra) at 3.5.3-4.
So.......I'm coming from gentoo so maybe I'm miss configuring something in /etc/pacman.conf? I currently have current, extra and community enabled and with pacman -Syu they are all reporting to be up to date.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    wow,
    You guys respond quickly
Glad to hear I'm not just missing something obvious - that's always a bit embarrassing on the forum.
No problem waiting. Loving Arch so far though. Just hoping to see a package for e17 but I already see people with more skill than me working on it. Gotta love it.
Thanks to both of you for your responses.
