Quick driver question from a newb

So, for sound card drivers, should I uninstall the old ones first before installing the new drivers? (kind of like videocard drivers) or with creative can I just install and be on my way?

I already have good karma, I don't need your help.
You are asking a question about javascript in a java forum. The two have nothing to do with each other.

  • Hi All, ready for a quick mask question from a newbie ;-) ?

When I make a quick mask selection, it becomas "red-ish" as it suppose to. When I leave quick mask mode however, the painted area does not become a visible (yes I checked the correct option dialogue box, I guess, according to a friend) selected area though. But when I make any adjustment, eg color saturation, it only affects the area I selected in the quick mask mode, which I cannot see except for the adjustment. How on earth did I manage to make this happen. What have I done wrong or haven't done at all? You kind attention and quick reply is highly appreciated. Best /Stefan

Thanks a lot, Sir, much appreciated. Under View options one can selected "show selection outlines or boundaries", well not in swedish, it says something completely different, but just as you said, there it was!
    Again, thanks a lot!

  • Two really embarrassing questions from iPod newbie!

Although I've been using Macs since the steam-powered Mac SE, I've never actually owned an iPod (until now), because I never listen to music 'on the go'.
However, I've just ordered an 80Gb Classic from the Apple Store, principally as a handy way to have all the songs I've written or played on in one handy, small location.
However, because I've never owned one before, I have a couple of questions that probably seem +really stoopid+ (red face)...
    1. I guess I will copy all the songs from CD to iTunes on my iMac and then upload them to the iPod. But will I have to keep all those songs in iTunes? If I subseqiently delete them from iTunes, will they be automatically deleted on the iPod the next time I try and copy any songs from iTunes to it?
    2. When I copy the music files to iTunefrom CD, can I copy the music files to an external Firewire HD, not my main hard drive? There are a lot of songs to copy and I don't want to fill a significant chunk of my main hard drive if I don't have to. Would iTunes 'see' them on an external HD? Or can I copy them straight from the CDs to the iPod via iTunes, without physically copying them to an HD at all?
Sorry for the basic questions, I hope someone can help.

    Robin,
You might want to consider a few things before you wipe your iTunes library clean (assuming you have already trasnfered them onto your iPod).
If, for some reason, you need to restore your iPod and put music back on, iTunes will have to transfer that music back to your iPod. If you have wiped your iTunes library clean that could mean spending a lot of time REformatting your music collection to put back on your iPod.
Also, I have had a few instances where, although I have iTunes set to 'manually' manage my transfers, iTunes has deleted all of my music. Thank God I had my library on my hard drive as it only meant a 20 minute sync to transfer 6,000 songs back on.
If hard drive space on your desktop or laptop is limited, iTunes offers a way to 'backup' the library on DVD+R or similar media. So, for about $10 in blank DVD costs, you can just make a portable backup to put in a drawer.
Just PLEASE think about these issues before you put music on your iPod and delete it from your hard drive. From experience, things happen and you don't want to go through the 'ripping' hassle again! (ripping, the term for making mp3/wma/aac files from a CD)
Last, if this is your first attempt at putting your music collection on your computer, you might want to keep them there. You might be surprised at how handy it is to have all of your music in one place close by, especially if you invest in a pretty moderately priced speaker setup for your computer.
    Best of luck!

  • Question from a Newbie wireless user

Please excuse the naivete of this question. I'm completely ignorant on everything pertaining to wireless internet. My old Powerbook 400mHz G4 Titanium has never had wireless of any kind until this week when I bought a PCMCIA wireless adapter. Never used wireless, don't know anything about it.
I started following the instructions on the PCM adapter this morning to get it all set up. I plan to toggle back and forth between wired internet at home and the wireless adapter when I'm out on the road.
I was surprised when I saw the window where I enter my settings that there were no less than ten different internet services flying around the room in my house! I guess I have a lot of wireless neighbors and I could easily access their bandwidth.
I imagine the same would go when I'm in town sitting in the library. They welcome you to use their internet access, but it's in a busy end of town and I'm sure I'll see numerous services available there too.
So I'm clueless on this topic. Again, I've never used wireless internet before - but I've read about these guys who've been arrested in front of coffee houses for stealing bandwidth at WiFi hotspots when they weren't paying customers.
What's the deal with sitting in your living room and using your neighbor's internet access? I know it's not ethical and we should all get our own, but what are legalities? And say I hopped on to someone's internet access +quite accidentally+...how does one get caught if you do it quietly? And have people actually gotten into trouble beyond these two guys that made national news?
I guess my main question is exactly how careful do I need to be to set the correct access service when there are ten immediately available in a public place? Can I just click on whatever signal is strongest and log on without fear of being caught?
I hope somebody knowledgeable can set me straight on this.
    Thanks.
    -JOHN
ps. Here's the news item on these guys stealing wireless internet access:

  • Miscellaneous - Questions from a Newbie

I just got my iPhone this week and some questions popped up. I know that some of them might fit better in other categories than "basics"...
    1. Sync with Outlook - I was under the impression that the iPhone syncs up with Outlook but:
    a) How can you mark an Outlook Appointment as "privat" so not everyone in your company who has access to you calender can read it?
    b) Why are no documents synced, which are in a Calender Appointment save in Notes? (The Text in Notes will sync, but no PDFs for example...)
    c) When I reply to an E-Mail, the info that an when I replyed is not saved in Outlook
    d) in Outlook I can mark e-mails with priorities... this is not shown on the iPhone
    e) can the Auto-reply or Out-of-the-Office message set or changed from the iPhone?
    2. Mail
    a) I have differnt E-Mail accounts and would like to use different signitures for each account... the is an App, but thats too complicated. Is there a way to have an automated signature for each acount (this should be a basic feature!!!)
    b) Can I save e-mail attachments in specific folders? (eg a word doc)
    3. Media
    a) How can i created different Folders in the photoalbum, so I can sort them and don't have to scroll for ages...
    b) Can I get access to the Folders on the iPhone, so I can copy (for example Music) for differnt sources to the iPhone?
    c) Is there another Sync programm than iTunes?
    d) Can I delete Apps which I don't use (eg. Weather, Stockmarket...), but which are allready installed when i bought it
    4. Sounds and Alerts
    a) Can i create my own ringtones (eg an mp3)?
    b) Can I add other alert sounds (for E-mails for example)
    c) How can I change sounds for different Events (New Mail, Alert...)?
    5. Connectivity
    a) Can I sync the iPhone over bluetooth?
    b) Can I use the iPhone as a modem for my laptop? how?
    c) If stolen, can I remotely delete it or search it via GPS?
    6. Battery
    a) is it normal that when you use push mail and make a couple of calls a day the battery only last for max. 20 hours?
Thats the first lot of question from week one... Thanks in advance for replys and the awaiting answers
    Axl

I can answer some of them:
Is there a way to have an automated signature for each acount (this should be a basic feature!!!)
    No
    b) Can I save e-mail attachments in specific folders? (eg a word doc)
No. You can't save attachments - just view them
    b) Can I get access to the Folders on the iPhone, so I can copy (for example Music) for differnt sources to the iPhone?
No. The iPhone cannot be directly accessed like a hard disk. There are third-party apps that allow this to a certain degree, but you can't add Media to the iPhone via this method.
    c) Is there another Sync programm than iTunes?
Not really. There's some that may do some features, but not a complete replacement for it. What's wrong with iTunes?
    d) Can I delete Apps which I don't use (eg. Weather, Stockmarket...),
No. But you can move them to a different Home screen.
    a) How can i created different Folders in the photoalbum, so I can sort them and don't have to scroll for ages...

    a) Can i create my own ringtones (eg an mp3)?
Yes. Google "create iPhone ringtone" for a variety of options
    a) Can I sync the iPhone over bluetooth?
    No.
    b) Can I use the iPhone as a modem for my laptop? how?
Yes, although it depends where you are. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3574
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2756
    c) If stolen, can I remotely delete it or search it via GPS?
Yes. See MobileMe's "Find My iPhone" feature:
    http://www.apple.com/mobileme/features/iphone.html
    a) is it normal that when you use push mail and make a couple of calls a day the battery only last for max. 20 hours?
Quite possibly. Battery life seems to be reduced in the latest firmware and lots of people are awaiting a fix from Apple.

  • Quick Driver Question for G31M3-V2

I just bought a G31M3 V2 on sale from Frys with a E5200. I also bought a new SATA drive at the same time. I installed Vista x64, last night (cleanly with a reformat), on an IDE drive that I had, and I was trying to get the system to see my SATA drive. I Popped in an Ubuntu CD so I could use the live portion to see if I could see the SATA drive. I could see it, and I formatted it to NTFS. I also placed some files on there to test it out. The drive was working perfectly and Ubuntu has full access to it. But I still can't see it in Windows.
Vista doesnt even see an "unidentified device" or anything. I keep trying to install the drivers from the Mobo CD, but I can't get any of them to install.
I went to the drivers online (http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1449) and downloaded "Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver". When I try to run it, I get the message: "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software. Setup will exit."
I have no idea what to do to get Vista to see my drive. I have re-installed Vista 3 times already to try different things, and at no time has the drive been detected. But Ubuntu continutes to be able to see and access the drive. What do I do?

Success and Failure at the same time.
I decided to go to bed, since it didn't look like I was going to get any more help today, so I went for the shut-down. I clicked the windows button, and accidentally hit the power symbol instead of that little arrow that gives you the options of shut down, restart, hibernate, etc. The power button just suspended the machine, and when I got back into Vista to do a proper shut down, the machine said it had identified my SATA drive! I went and looked and yes, it was there, with all the files I had put on it as well! I opened up a few of them and they all worked. I was happy that the situation had been resolved and went to do a shut-down again.
But then I decided to do a restart instead, to see if my access to the drive stuck around. I restarted and the HD had disappeared from the drives list! So I tried to recreate what I did previously, I suspended the machine and then logged back it. Yep, the drive had been detected again and it was running perfectly.
So in conclusion, it seems Vista doesn't see the drive unless I suspend the machine first, and then log back in. If I shut down or restart, the drive disappears from Vista, and I have to do the suspension trick again.
    What could be the problem?

  • Yet Another Hard Drive Question from a Mac Newbie

I apologize in advance for the length of this post -- as I state in the subject line, I am a complete Mac newbie.
I just took delivery yesterday on a new (early 2008) Mac Pro. I purchased and installed an additional 8GB RAM, and ordered it with a 500GB HD (Seagate, it looks like) and purchased two 750GB Hitachi HDs for bays 2 and 3. I will be doing a fair amount of photo editing, and also plan to partition the OS drive to run XP using bootcamp, but also plan to use VM Fusion.
I am thinking of partitioning the boot drive with 250GB for OS X and apps, 150 GB for XP and apps, and ~66 remaining possibly to be used as scratch memory for CS3, though it sounds like this may not be enough. The bay 2 Hitachi would be used for all my user data (photos, music, docs, etc.) bay 3 would be for backup initially, possibly using Time Machine? (other recommendations welcomed). As space becomes an issue in the future, I will invest in a fourth internal HD, and at least 2TB external HDs for backup.
Does this seem like a reasonable plan? If so, how do I go about formatting the drives and installing boot camp, Fusion, etc., and in what order? Also, how best do I organize my existing files from my current Windows machine as I copy them to the new user data HD, so they can be accessed as needed by both OS X and XP?
    Thanks for your help.

I like the boot volume to never get beyond 50% used. Enough room for burning dual-layer DVDs can be 50GB for best results. And to force the system to use the first outer tracks.
I hope you are concurrently zeroing both drives. SoftRAID is my choice for driver for RAIDs and you can cancel safely at any time. There are also excellent tools for checking sectors and mapping out bad blocks.
I put Vista on its own 10K Raptor. I had it on the boot drive but I am always changing my mind, my drives and setup. Vista needs at least 40GB and that is with all my major documents and files on another drive which holds 150GB out of 450GB.
You set the preference for what drive to use as scratch in CS3 or other programs. And you want to disable Spotlight indexing on any scratch or editing partition. Scratch can be a drive, a volume, a stripped array. Any 'normal' partition though don't use the default (journaling) feature is all.
How large? I'd have to see and know how large files, work flow, and how long you work between projects. The nice thing, erase the scratch volume between projects but it is possible to use 300GB when you work on 1.5GB files and above.
One early Mac Pro owner wasn't able to work as they wanted until they had 10-12GB RAM, boot RAID0, and RAIDs for scratch and data (saving 2GB files and not having to wait forever, which even a minute can feel like forever).
Disk Utility: Partition. You can even partition 2+ drives, just make them the same, and first create 2 partitions (100GB on each?) and then stripe the first "Untitled 1" of each into 100GB x n array. Stripe or mirror the "Untitled 2" or leave those are two unique non-RAID volumes. Sounds harder than it is.
Scratch = temp space and designed to not be saved, to be erased as needed.
SoftRAID.com 3.6.6 makes it easy to create, delete, erase volumes and arrays as needed. Leopard has improved on non-RAID but not with RAIDs (for those that change their minds).

  • 1 quick question from a newbie

First let me introduce myself. Hi my name is Jbird123 whats yours?
Ok now then, I just got FCE today.
First question is do I need a camera with a fire wire port, I have a cannon fs100 that only has usb. what setup do I choose for this camera.( In the easy setup menu it only has fire wire options) can I use this or will I need to get one with a fire wire port?.
I also read threw the maual a little and put my scratch disk setting to my external fire wire hd. What about the FCE document folders? I put this on the external hd aswell, (autosave, capture scratch, render files, ect.) Was that cool or what?
I plan on only using this software for uploading vids to youtube. Thanks for any responses.

I know what you mean about not wanting to have your external hard drive connected all the time. However, I believe that if you have any of those locations (including capture scratch) set to your external it will need to be connected to your computer in order to boot FCE (I know mine does). I could be wrong, so an easy way to check would be to set everything but capture scratch to your internal and then see if it needs the external to boot up.
About the external editors, they would not explain your need to render your audio. Rendering is needed after almost any change is made to your media in the timeline. The external editors are so if you right click on your media, and click "open in editor," then it will open up that program to edit it. I personally keep these open in editor fields blank as I prefer to edit my media in their default editors instead of taking the risk that the media will be changed in any way when opened in an external program. (Then again, I don't have Soundtrack, and so can't advise you in that area.) Setting the external editor to Soundtrack would not explain your need to render, that is probably because the changes you made can't be previewed in real time.
    Hope I was of help.

  • Quick question from a newbie

I want to set up VOIP trunk between two fixed location. Location A is home while location B is work. There is a VPN between the two, they are on different subnets. I want to access the PSTN line at site B (work) from Site A (home) using VOIP. In other words I want to use the PSTN at work to make voice calls when I work from home.
Can I just install SPA3102 in work and use SPA901 at home. No SIP server just direct trunk between the two. In other wods can I just "dial" the SPA3012 using the SPA901 and get a PSTN dial tone. No other devices will be involve just point to point between these two.
Is this possible, is it easy to set up?
    Many thanks

  • Driver question from newbie

I read in Maximum PC magazine that you should periodically update the chipset drivers for your mobo?  The only Intel driver listed on the MSI website was released in September 2003 (v5.02.1002) and reads "Add support for Intel 848P and 865GV".  According to my literature, my mobo is an MSI 875P NEO-LSR 500/800MHZ (whatever that means)...how do I determine if this driver is the correct one?

These are the latest INF drivers that MSI has released. There are newer ones available from Intel that are not specifically for your motherboard but some people have installed them successfully. Personally I don't think you should make this change unless your having a problem related to your current INF drivers. Most people say you should install the INF files IMMEDIATELY after installing Windows and before anything else to avoid conflicts with other drivers. IMO I don't think you'll see any real performance increase with this type of upgrade...It's more to add functionality and solve existing problems.
If you decide to go ahead, you should make sure XP System Restore is functioning and create a restore point before applying the update so there's a chance you could recover easily if you have to.

  • Top 3 questions from a newbie

Hi folks, I have performed a basic search and didn't turn up an answer to these so am looking for some guidance please.
I love my Nokia Lumia 800 and think Nokia Here (nee Maps) and especially Nokia Drive (which I use every week) are awesome but here are my three questions/requests and hope Nokia is also monitoring these posts.
    1. Could we please be told if Nokia are working on a way to use your address book contacts to set a destination. I used to have this on Windows Mobile 6.5 and most other smartphone OS's have this. I find it hard to believe that Nokia with such innovation and being a recognised leader in mapping that this isn't available.
    2. Can someone tell me how to enter a junction of two roads into Nokia Drive and Nokia Here as every combination I have tried doesn't seem to work e.g. High street and Bond street
    3. Could we please be told if Nokia are working on a way to use a separate volume / audio session to avoid impacting any playing music when using Nokia drive or maps, this will allow a driver to lower the volume of the GPS app and leave the music at the correct level without impacting it. I used to have this on the Smartphone TomTom software on Windows mobile 6.5 also
Thanks and apologies if these questions have already been dealt with elsewhere

About n°1: the method I was told to use does not work:
To navigate to contact: from the contact list, open a contact, click on "map home address", this starts Here maps, then click the "directions" button, then enter, then choose the car, this starts Here Drive.
The problem with this method is that at the "direction" step, the destination is not is exact address you're heading to, it's just the town.
So I still haven't found a way to do that. It seems pretty simple for Nokia to repair the missing link between here maps and Here Drive: just set the full address in the "destination" text field mentioned above.

  • A few questions from a newbie!

    Hello!
So, I am VERY new to using Mac productions and I just got my Macbook recently.
I have a few questions that may seem to have a very simple and obvious answer but like I said, this is all new to me...
    1. Do I have to install a anti-virus/spam program? If so, which one?
    2. Time Machine- this is the program to back up files right? when I try to set it up it doesn't give me any options for a back up disk.
Anything else that I should defiantly know please let me know!
    Thanks so much!

Not unless you want to. I have had Macs for 2 years and never had a problem. This is a good one if you decide to install one. ClamXav

You need an external hard drive attached to use with Time Machine. This explains it.

This is info that will help you get the best life from your battery.
It is OK to leave your battery hooked to the charger most of the time. The only time I unhook mine from the charger is when I calibrate or for a few minutes to use in another room. Have you calibrated your battery yet? You should calibrate every two months or so to keep the battery fully functioning. If you use your MacBook infrequently, it’s best to re-calibrate the battery at least once a month.
It is best not to use your battery unless you need to. Some people have hurt their batteries by charging then discharging every time they use the MacBook. This will age a battery very fast and cause you to buy a battery sooner than you should have too. Don't discharge the battery just because you used it. Li-Ion batteries prefer small charges over big ones. Use it and then plug it in as soon as you can. The only time my Battery is ever fully discharged is when I'm doing a calibration.

  • Question from Mac newbie about system and startup programs

I recently switched from an old Win 98 computer and LOVE this macbook! Could someone please explain a couple of things to me?
Two windows now suddenly appear when I restart my computer - one is a window with all the files and folders stuff from when I installed my Canon MP500 printer last week. Why is this box opening at startup, and can I get it to stop?
The other suddenly opening at restart is a simple Finder window showing my hard drive and network. (I am not connected to a network). What's the source of these things starting up? How can I fiddle with this setting? These things are not listed when I go to System Preferences-Accounts-Login items.
On Windows you can hit CtrlAltDelete and see all the running programs, even background programs. How do I do it on the Mac?
    Thanks,
    -Alden

Charles I'll start from your last question. You'll find "Activity Monitor" in the Utilities folder (inside Applications folder) that's the equivalent to the Task Manager in Windows. you can leave it in the dock to have it handy.
About the Canon printer window showing when you start; see if it has an open icon on the dock when it's open. Click and maintain clicked on that icon (if there is one) and uncheck "Open at Login".
Finder Window usually opens at login if it was open when you logged out
Oh, and Welcome to the forums!

  • Update Questions from a Newbie--)))

Just got my new iMac Intel last night! Yippie!!! This is the first Mac for me. So far I love this puppy!
    Here's my questions:
I have seven updates to get: 6 are actual Applications and the last one is the latest OS X update to 10.4.5 from 10.4.4
Should I just try one update at a time or can I have confidence in d/l all and installing all at the same time?
My past computer experiance is 20 years, of WinDoz, some Amiga and some linux. IM not very unix savy and mainly have a hardware background.
At this stage IM being very carefull. Im sure you can relate--)))
Thanks in advance for your input.

Even though yor Mac is new, before installing a major OS Update such as 10.4.5 you should update your backup - which may not be important at this point since your Mac is only 1 day old so this is for future reference.
I do the following before installing a major OS Update.
    Update my backup.
Boot from the Tiger install disc that shipped with my Mac and at the installer window after selecting my language, navigate to Disk Utility via the installer menu bar.
    * Select Macintosh HD in drives and volumes window.
    * Select the First Aid tab in the Disk Utility window.
    * Select the Repair Disk button on the First Aid tab.
If any problems are reported and successfully repaired, run repair again until no problems are reported.
After Repair Disk completes, quit Disk Utility and it will return to the Installer. Quit the Installer and when prompted, select Restart.
Although my PB was new (received last November), I ran Disk First Aid repair on the hard drive before installing all available updates via Software Update and DFA repair discovered a minor hard drive directory problem that was successfully repaired so don't assume your hard drive is in perfect working order even though it is brand new.
Disconnect all external peripheral devices except for a keyboard and mouse.
With all applications quit, launch Software Update. I've never experienced any problems installing all available updates at one time.
