How can I add a string to a string. Each time I try the output is blank...:(There are a variety of ways. Don't make us guess at what you're trying to do.
Please post a short, concise, executable example of what you're trying to do. This does not have to be the actual code you are using. Write a small example that demonstrates your intent, and only that. Wrap the code in a class and give it a main method that runs it - if we can just copy and paste the code into a text file, compile it and run it without any changes, then we can be sure that we haven't made incorrect assumptions about how you are using it.
Post your code between
and
tags as described in Formatting Help on the message entry page. Cut and paste the code, rather than re-typing it (re-typing often introduces subtle errors that make your problem difficult to troubleshoot). Please preview your post when posting code.
Please assume that we only have the core API. We have no idea what SomeCustomClass is, and neither does our collective compiler.

• Easy question for Apple pro users from new users

How do you copy pictures from the iPhoto on our system to an external HD? In other words I can highlight the pictures in the source location and do the copy function, however no paste function shows when going to the external HD location. I have also tried dragging and dropping the select files or folders of pics with no success.

Click on the drive, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

I don't think the date I became a member has anything to do with it. Yes, I signed up a year ago to ask a question or two when I didn't know anything. It wasn't until recently have I started to use this forum again, only to try and help people as well as ask my questions. It took me a year to get to this point to where I can actually answer questions instead of just asking. So don't be silly and judge a person based on their profile.
Secondly, I agree with you, the search utility is great. I use it all the time and usually I'll find my answers, but if I don't is it such a pain in the butt for you to see the same problem posted again?? I know how much you want people to use the resources available before wasting forum space with duplicate questions, but it's not going to happen. Some people are not as patient and you being a butt about it won't stop it.
My point in general is that there are nice ways to help people and even rude ways, and your comments at times come across rude to me, even condescending. You have a lot of knowledge, therefore certain things seem trivial to you... but try to understand where some of the new people are coming from. The Swing tutorial is extremely helpful but if you don't understand the concept of programming or java that well... then it can be overwhelming and you don't know where to start. It's a huge tutorial and when people are stuck they just want an answer to their one question. Most figure it's easier to ask someone who already knows instead of reading an entire tutorial to get their answer.
I've learned by both methods, by taking the time to research it myself and by asking a lot of questions. I have the time. Some don't. Please realize that not everyone is like you and they will continue to ask whether you like it or not. You have a choice, either help them or not.

• RAM Memory question for Mac Pro 2.66 Ghz

Hi all. I've got a MacPro 2.66 Ghz machine and I'm wondering if I need more RAM. Depending on who I talk to, I get a different answer so I'm hoping for some educated opinions. I've been monitoring my system and I get the following numbers from the Activity Monitor:
Wired: 1.20 GB
Active: 1.81 GB
Inactive: 957 MB
Free: 53 MB
Although it appears I have quite a bit of memory between inactive and free, the computer at times performs "choppy" and slow. I get the "beachball" frequently. I've verified the disc volume and also verified permissions and there appears to be no issues.
Based on the fact that the computer is used heavily by two users, is there a possibility that I do need more RAM? Or should I run an diagnostic on the computer to confirm if there is another issue. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello wenwon (and welcome),
1. Assuming you've decided (wisely) to follow the suggestions to add RAM, I can only add that you should shop around - for only - "certified" RAM for your Mac Pro. Just for example, I've found macsales.com to be a good source: I bought 4 x 1 GB certified FB-DIMM w/ ECC RAM for a fraction of Apple installed price. Performance has been completely satisfactory.
Tips: adding RAM to the Mac Pro is easy & fast but must be done exactly to the instructions. macsales.com provides a good video tutorial which will help. Also, you will eventually hear that adding RAM causes more power consumption and higher running temp than, for example, adding hard drives. This is true: but read reviews such as the one on AMUG <http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/intel/macpro/>, which allievates that concern.
2. I firmly agree with AjanovicH; don't jump on 10.5 as soon as it comes out. I had the chance to talk in person to a developer and he "seconded" my own "wait for maturity" standard. Besides, he also said that 10.4 has (obviously) reached full maturity and stability. How long you wait is up to you - just keep track of subsequent point releases (as in: 10.5.2, etc). And - do keep track of what's being said on the 10.5 Discussion threads and whatever other sources you find reliable. My own rule of thumb is to wait until the XX.x.5 release comes out. Minimizes the chance of spending time with problems which do come during the interim releases.

• 10.7.2 upgrade question for MacBook Pro 5,1?

i am currently running 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro 5,1. i'm gonna upgrade it to Lion.
will this process install a recovery partition on my MacBook Pro hard drive? If so, how big?
after i upgrade, will I still need my install discs readily available, or can i finally store them away?
i am just trying to understand how life works after going to Lion on a MacBook Pro 5,1?
it seems that i will only need my original discs for the Apple Hardware Test. Everything else can be done via the recovery partition?
any tips? has anyone done this to a 5,1 yet?
THANK YOU!

Yes, the OSX Lion installer will create a Recovery HD Partition in your HDD. It's about 650mb in space.
Erica M31 wrote:

Although you won't need your install discs after installing OSX Lion, I always advise to keep them in a reachable area should you want to "downgrade" back to Snow Leopard or install your MacBook's Windows drivers on a Bootcamp partition. I have my Snow Leopard Discs in my MacBook Pro box for the "just in case" scenario.
Erica M31 wrote:

As stated in the last statement, I recommend that you keep your original MacBook Pro discs store in a place where you can easily reach them for the "just in case" scenarios. I will just tell you to keep your original OSX Installation & Apple Hardware Test discs that came with your computer and the SL upgrade disc (if your computer came with Snow Leopard).
Although you can reinstall Lion via the Recovery HD, I always suggest upgrading users to create a back-up USB or DVD with the full installer. You see, the Recovery HD is stored in your HDD and it can become unbootable if your HDD dies in the future, therefore making it useless. Having a back-up DVD or USB installer, offers you a way to boot your Mac in case the HDD fails. The advantages of the USB or DVD installer is that you can install OSX Lion without the need of an internet connection; use it to install Lion on your other Macs; and have all the features of the Recovery HD partition.
To create a back-up USB or DVD installer follow the instructions in these articles:
For a DVD Installer:
http://eggfreckles.com/notes/burning-a-lion-boot-disc/
For a USB Install Key:
http://www.eggfreckles.net/notes/installing-lion-clean/
I own a MacBook Pro mid-2010 model and it runs OSX Lion fine, however I should warn that this OS has still some annoying bugs that need to be fixed. I would recommed you to hold buying OSX Lion until Apple releases the 10.7.3 update. After this release occurs it will release a OSX Lion installer that has that version bundled into it. This will install OSX Lion with the latest updates and create the appropiate caches for it, therefore eliminating the chances of corrupted caches.
Hope this helps and write back if you have any questions!
Happy Computing!
EDIT:
Forgot to mention that once you download the OSX Lion intaller it will launch automatically and guide you through the process. If you want to make a DVD or USB installer just close the installer and follow the instructions in the post. Under normal circumstances, the OSX Lion installer will delete itself one once the update is finished.

• Question for the pros

Evening all,
This is my first post here, as I'm just starting out with
Dreamweaver. I began making
really basic websites 6 or 7 years ago - hand coding
everything, but as I said, these were basic, simple pages - long
before I'd even heard of CSS, XHTML etc.
I'm getting back into web design after a few years of not
going anywhere near it, so I'm at what I guess you'd call "beginner
beginner" stage!
Like most things, its easy to get disheartened and
pessimistic when faced with the intimidating idea of mastering all
things web design, so my question is for all of the users here who
are at an advanced or professional level - how long did it take you
to get to the stage you're at now? Problems encountered along the
way?
Also, would enrolling in a course be advisable, or is it
possible, given time and dedication, to become accomplished at all
of this using books, online tutorials like Adobe and Lynda.com etc?
Thanks!

Even after 15 years at this game, I occasionally get
disheartened by
complexity of web development. It's a relatively new
technology and
has developed at an astounding rate. I think it's wise to get
things
in perspective. The basics of web development are easy to
master. HTML
has a relatively small number of tags that are regularly
used; and the
*theory* of CSS is quite simple. Where CSS is difficult is in
practice: properties can be combined in an infinite way.
Getting to
the top level takes a lot of time, patience, and inspiration.
There's also a considerable difference between designers and
programmers. I'm "OK" at design, but it's not my forte. I
much prefer
working on the back end of a website using PHP. Many
independent
developers cooperate with others, subcontracting aspects of
the
website to people with skills in areas they lack.

The value of a course depends on the teacher and the
curriculum. I
both teach and write books about Dreamweaver, and would like
to think
my students and readers learn a lot from them. There are some
very
good courses on Lynda.com, and of course you can come here
for help on
specific problems.

• 64 bits question for mac pro users

Hi,
I am actually in the process of buying a new Mac Pro and I would like to know if someone here could help me to understand what's going on with the 64 bits mode thing on the mac pro.
I have a mac pro 1,1. Now I am using SL, but ML is out for a while. I use Logic 9 and most of my plugins supports the 64 bits mode, but I am sticked to the 32 bits mode.
First question: Is it right to think that going for 64 bits mode computer now will greatly improve the performances and internal memory management on Logic in 64 bits mode with plugins in 64 bits mode?
Second question: Looking at the wiki page for the mac pro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_Pro#Specifications), I understand that the 5,1 model is fully 64 bits compatible, but what about the 3,1 and 4,1 models? Are they fully 64 bits compatible if they are upgraded to ML? Why is the kernel not 64 bits?
I would like to buy a used mac pro, which would fit better in my budget right now. But, I am looking for better performances and a 64 bits mode of operation, and these are my priorities right now.
Thanks for your time to help me.
Martin

Yes. And no.
Use all 8 DIMM slots. Result = 17% boost over not.
Use 667MHz 2GB DIMMs = 4% slower (not noticed real world, Barefeats also).
Yes you can't use 8GB DDR3 etc.
I thnk that the issues wtih ML and Lion, the issue witrh some PCIe cards not working, not being bootable, and that it was the first to try to implement the new EFI and SMC in 3 yrs - are bigger issues.
And the cost of system even now is too high without taking into account: RAM, will I need to upgrade the video card it came with? before I can use it.
Yes. Penny wise and pound foolish over 4 yrs old model now (will turn 5 in February) and was first booted by Intel in November 2007.

• Re-install questions for Logic Pro 8

I have recently switched from a G5 to the new Mac Pro. I installed the two hard drives from my G5 into slots 2 and 3 on my Mac Pro. Each is 300GB. Slot 1 is the 320GB hard drive that came with the Mac Pro. My plan is to use the main drive (slot 1) for all other applications, do a clean install on my second 300GB drive (slot 2) and update to Mac OS 10.5, then re-install only Logic Studio on this drive. I use my third hard drive (slot 3) to record audio to. I will probably add another hard drive to slot 4 to use either for virtual instruments (Vienna Strings, Wallander), or use it as backup for my system.
I am a long time Logic user (since 1995) and have been continually updating, my last update being to Logic Studio from Logic Pro 7. I want to avoid any unforeseen issues with re-installing from an update, so I would really appreciate any advice on the best procedure to accomplish this re-install. I also am intending on keeping an alias of Logic Pro 8 on the dock of my main drive to open and use Logic from my second drive, and will store all logic song files on the second drive with the application, and continue to record audio to the third drive, as mentioned above. Any helpful wisdom or suggestions for improvement on this configuration would be great too, but I'm mainly asking for help on Logic Studio re-install.

Happy New Mac
My plan is to use the main drive (slot 1) for all other applications, do a clean install on my second 300GB drive (slot 2) and update to Mac OS 10.5, then re-install only Logic Studio on this drive.
That's fine except that most applications (and certainly Logic) have to be installed on the boot drive, and the library or user library +on that drive+ will contain all library files such as application support, preferences etc.
I use my third hard drive (slot 3) to record audio to
That's where old and new Logic projects should live.
I will probably add another hard drive to slot 4 to use either for virtual instruments
Good idea.
or use it as backup for my system.
I'd suggest an external drive for backups, with a basic system on it in a separate partition, solely used for emergencies. Most of the time it should be 'off' except when actually backing up.
and will store all logic song files on the second drive with the application
Shouldn't they be on your 3rd. drive? All projects, old and new, should live on that, I think.
Also, be aware that if you plan to install Logic 7 (for old projects) re-install this first, before you install Logic 8. You can't do this in the wrong order. This will be on the same boot drive and Logic 8 (and your system).

• Question for Mac Pro owners w/Pioneer DVR-112D superdrive: what firmware?

For those whose Mac Pro came pre-installed with the Pioneer DVR-112D superdrive, what firmware revision is it running?
The reason I'm asking is that I have an aftermarket 112D, bought from OWC, that I purchased for it's rip/burn speed advantage over the pokey, possibly riplock crippled, Sony DW-150A that came with my Mac Pro. This advantage was indeed gained, but at the expense of living with some quirkiness with the drive, namely the "two-ejects required" problem discussed here:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthre...highlight=112D
This quirkiness has gotten worse since the latest Mac Pro EFI firmware update on 09/27/07. Now if I'm watching a movie from a DVD in the 112D tray, any extended pause (and by extended I only mean more than a minute or so) causes an unrecoverable error in DVD Player and I'm forced to restart the DVD Player and restart the movie.
My suspicion is that this all has something to do with some (overzealous?) power management feature in Mac OS X that's not playing nice with the existing 112D firmware (I'd be interested in hearing any other plausible theories).
Currently, my 112D firmware is at revision 1.06. There a number of updated firmware revisions for the 112D circulating on the internet, PC centric, of course and mostly related to disabling region-locking etc.
I'd like to match my 112D firmware to whatever Mac Pro owners with a 'bona-fide' 112D enjoy, if it's publicly available somewhere.
Thanks.

Forrest McElfresh1 wrote:
The latest Pioneer DVR-112D/212D OEM firmware is v. 1.22 dated august 7, 2007. My general practice is to Avoid Apple firmware on OEM drives, it often disables features and is most infrequently updated.
My 112D is at version 1.21. Over the years I have successfully updated the firmware in my Pioneers using the Terminal app DVRFlash. But DVRFlash doesn't support the 112 or 111 series (yet). I wondered how you had updated to 1.22. I know it can be done by connecting to a PC, (which includes Bootcamp, but not Parallels) but I don't have ready access to a PC. At the moment I am waiting for Leopard before going Bootcamp way.
Any advice?
Hope this isn't hijacking the thread.

• Downconvert question for the Pro's

My original sequence was 720p 59.94 with a mix of HD and SD footage. The SD footage was scaled up using the motion tab to fill the screen. Now since I am ready for SD output, I created a uncompressed 8-bit easy set up and created a new sequence. The resulting sequence is 720 by 486 and CCIR 601 (40:27) aspect ratio, and the pixel aspect ratio is also CCIR 601 40:27.
All of my SD footage has black pillars on either side. My HD shots come over nicely with a letterbox but play back nasty and jittery because of the frame rate. BTW my SD footage is 720x486 CCIR 601 29.97fps.
How can I marry these two worlds in one timeline and get a full picture and optimal frame rate playback?
Thanks!

Two things you could try...
1) Output a QT Movie of your 720p sequence and then nest that into the 480i sequence.
2) Instead of nesting the 720p sequence into the 480i sequence, just select all the clips in the 720p sequence and copy them into the 480i sequence. If the SD clips are still pillarboxed, then you can select them all and remove attributes (get rid of Basic Motion and Distort) and they will snap back into the proper size.

• Quick/Easy J++ Question

Could someone please help me....
Write a program to determine the answers for each of the following:
a. The square root of 30
b. The sine and cosine of 100
c. The value of the floor, ceiling, and round of 44.7
d. The larger and the smaller ofthe character K and the interger 70.

Generally, this board is a resource to help answer specific problems a Java developer runs into in the course of programming. Popping your head in to ask someone to do your work for you is rude, and more importantly, unlikely to help you learn anything that your programming assignment might teach you.
I would suggest searching the forums to see if anyone else has asked similar questions and start from there. Once you have at least SOME of your own code, feel free to ask as many questions as you want, they are more than likely to be answered. If you can't at least start this simple program, maybe you ought to seek a more serious method of study or tutoring. I mean no disrespect by my response, I'm just trying to help you out and prevent any unnecessary flaming that has occured in the past in response to similar posts.

Sounds like it could be this.
In System Preferences > Speech, deselect Other Spoken Items There are three there to see.
It could also be:

• Iphoto question for MacBook Pro.

I am trying to superimpose two photos together in iphoto. Can anyone tell me how to do this?
Thanks

You can't, in a word. iPhoto doesn't do compositing. You need an external editor for that.
In order of price here are some suggestions:
Seashore (free)
The Gimp (free)
Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
Acorn ($50 approx)
Pixelmator ($50 approx)
Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
