  • Upgrading Operating System Question

Hi, this might be a dumb question but I was wondering if anyone here can tell me if you can skip an upgrade and go from OS 10.1 to 10.3 or 10.2 to 10.4.
The reason being that I'm still running OS 10.3 which is more than fine for now and do not want to upgrade to 10.4 because 10.5 seems to be just around the corner (late 2006 or early 2007).
Thanks in advance for any responses.

There is no doubt that Mac OS X 10.5 will be available for the PowerPC processor so there no reason to concern yourself on that front.
Even Mac OS X 10.6 will more than likely be PowerPC as well although in this case it may come to Apple's revised update schedule. At the 2004 (I believe) World Wide Developer's Conference Steve Job did state that Apple was slowing down the update schedule for Mac OS X from an annual update to a longer period. It's quite probable that version 10.5 has been brought forward somewhat due to both the Intel releases and Windows Vista though it's hard to say what that means for 10.6.
Regardless, you're fine for a few years yet!

  • Operating system question

I have OS X 10.5.4 and I upgraded applications that won't open except with Snow 10.6.3?
Any suggestions? If I upgrade will it erase all my files? Please give me a step by step...
I appreciate it ahead of time...
    Cheers!

    Hi F,
All you have to do is purchase 10.6 Snow Leopard ($29 or less online), boot from it (hold down the c key), and follow the on-screen directions to Upgrade (do not Erase and Install, as that will erase everything). It is always best to have a current backup, whether you're installing a new OS or just working day to day.

  • Operating System will not re-install

    Hi,
Had problem with CD stuck in drive and operating system crash. Got CD out and operating system CD in (many thanks), but now it won't re-install. Get through all the process up until point of it trying to Finish Up - then says "there were errors installing the software". Have now tried twice. Really don't want to try a re-install wiping all existing data.
To recap, before this I could not launch some applications and got an error message along the lines of "cannot launch application because of shared file library mirror" or something like that. (Hope this is not a virus). Appleworks and Civ 3 would not launch, Filemaker Pro and Dreamweaver did. Restarted machine, took out battery etc - to no avail. Then machine just had circle turning and then finally nothing but flashing operating system icon. Hope it's not dead. Help.

What it means is the drive's directory is damaged. You have a couple of choices.
    1. Use Disk Warrior to repair the drive.
    2. Erase and reformat the drive then reinstall everything. If you don't have your data backed up you'll loose everything. You could try connecting it to another Mac and starting it in Firewire target mode to attempt to recover the data but with a damaged directory it pretty iffy that the drive would mount. It's worth trying though.

  • I got a flashing folder with a question mark. I got a new hard drive and upgraded to 4 gigs and can't open anything or reload the operating system? Help?

I got a flashing folder with a question mark. I got a new hard drive and upgraded to 4 gigs and can't open anything or reload the operating system? Help? FYI: I have been using boot camp with windows 7 and started getting a kernal_data_Page_error and it would reboot windows, i was trying to do a chkdsk on the next reboot, but thats when i started getting this issue. I have put in a new hard drive and went from 2 gigs to 4. I can not get the computer to do anything, even the monitor does not show anything now????

    Prep your new drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs,) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.

  • I need to reinstall my operating system for 10.5 after seeing a file folder and question mark flashing on my start up screen. Can anyone help me with this?

I need to reinstall my operating system for 10.5 after seeing a file folder and question mark flashing on my start up screen. Can anyone help me with this?

    Hello,
That means it can find the Hard Drive, or can't find the things needed for booting.
See if DU even sees it.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Adobe's new 64 bit multimedia operating system code named Quick Silver

As far as I know Adobe is not creating a 64 bit bit operating system but I wish they would. Or at the very least they should make a web browser called Quick Silver.  I am writng this because I seen the Mozilla Fire Fox video. I think Moziila will soon write a mobile OS and maybe even a desktop OS. They are even asking for donations. I like Fire Fox because it is free. If they charge for it I would probably just use IE. I know Adobe has the free Acrobat Reader and Flash Player why not a web borwser? I think if Adobe created an OS and gave it away free for 18-19 months it could get a large amount market share. Two years later they could start to charge $35 for the OS. I think within 3 years Adobe could get 50% of the market share for new computers if the OS was only about $35.00 for the download version ($45.00 retail version).  I don't doubt that Adobe could get a good 50% of the market share and other multimedia software and hardware vendors would also support the Adobe OS. Before I make the feature request I would like to know your thoughts.

Imagine if the car industry ran like software/hardware:
Dragging your car home with a rope (and no wheels because they were not included) to spend 8 hours removing unnecessary things like 'McAfee windshield wiper fluid made from glue', 'iMovie sticky gum' on the upholstery, and "VAIO media player lemon scent deeply rigged into the AC unit" which has pretty much nothing to do with the car... only to call the dealership and ask: "when I start my car and pres the window down button the right blinker turns on and then the vehicle stops" then be put on hold for 6 months to receive the following response "what was the number of times the blinker flashed before the car turned off? we need that number to determine what part to send"... and then when you finally DO get the wheels the dealership releases a new version of your car and the state puts a road law into effect that crashes your vehicle when it touches the road unless you pay the dealership to upgrade from car 1.5 to car 1.5.7390... which when you do the engine is not supported? So... you buy the NEW NEW car that comes with 1.6 installed in the engine and find out the wheels will not be released till next month.
    dig?
    ~lol.
i do try remain cheerful and hopeful... but its not funny anymore.
you make a good point, but... are there some sales statistics for that?
light trolling, but seriously, does final cut have a support problem, roll out fail, error code and forum track record anything at all like this?
    google ->site: forums.adobe.com = About 12,500,000 results
    google ->site:forums.adobe.com = About 3,880,000 results
I think the FCP thing is a great idea. Lets check back in a year and see who bought it...
I would totally would have preferred to pay $6500.00 for a "Dedicated Adobe Tower Master Collection Desktop" @ $65 per month (hardware included)
instead of the $20,000 shelled out over the last 10 years on soft (PLUS another 2 desktops and 3 laptops and the gadgets since 2002)
not to mention the time lost. the valuable time I will want back on my deathbed. lol
Even if Adobe does not do a proprietary OS, I am thinking it still makes sense for some 3rd party to bundle, its not the same though...
Apple is on to something in my opinion.
Imagine Apple and Microsoft teaming up with Adobe to produce very specific machines?
Other industries do this, they communicate, they have standards, look at how Vehicles and Tire manufacturers collaborate...
When a new car comes out they don't just change the wheel well and expect the Tire manufacturers to follow suit later, no indeed, that kind of thing is rolled out proper and one can drive right off the lot the day its bought.

  • In downloading some games requires install of flash pgm, can this cause damage to the operating system?

I am new to Mac book pro world, wanted to run some games from website, or downloads. They require install of "Flash" f appl. Could this cause any damage to the Mac Operating System?   (I'm used to the PC Microsoft world)
    Thanks, Tom

Won't cause any damage. Apple just stopped including Flash in its default installation a while back, but there is no problems with you installing it. Just be warned that Flash apps tend to really drain your battery quickly.

    Hi
Unit configuration is different hence operating system will not work. Hence you need to create a USB recovery media for you other unit as well.
Let us know how it goes!

  • Blinking question mark/lost operating system

My imac G3 333MHz was running on OS9.2 which was installed by an Apple store, I do not have a disk for it since it was installed in the store after I was told that I was sold the wrong memory and that OSX really shouldn't run on the machine. So to make up for the mistake they took out OSX and did a clean install of 9.2. Now (months later) the flashing question mark appeared when I started up the computer. The only way I could get the computer to work at all was to start it up from the original OS 8.6 disk that came with it. Is there any way that I can get back to 9.2 or do I have to try to purchase the disk for the old operating system? It seems like most of the folders for it are still on the Hard Drive, but no matter what I tried I can't get it to start up from them.
imac G3 333MHz   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

I'd be a bit annoyed at the apple store who did this for you. OS X works fine on that model iMac, up through 10.3. So if you ahd that installed, it was fine. i don't know what the memory issue was they were reffering to. I don't know how you can be sold the wrong memory if it fit and worked, and what bearing that had on OS X.
To reinstall 9.2, you would have to buy it. No way around it.
But there's a deeper problem potentially. Often times when the OS just goes MIA like this, the problem is directory damage. Run disk first aid fromt he 8.6 disk. Does it return any errors that it can't fix. If so, more often than not, this is a corrupt directory. This could be solved by reformatting (erasing everything), or using third party utilities like diskwarrior. if you use a third party utility, it can often bring the whole thing back to life with no further problems.
Note that if you do have directory problems, reinstalling the OS without fixing those problems will only make it worse.

  • HI, I recently upgraded my operating system IOS 5.0.1 on an iphone 3gs. MY question is, how do I get the text messaging preview to just pop up so that I can see the name only when the lock screen is on? The conventional ways of doing this aren't working

HI, I recently upgraded my operating system IOS 5.0.1 on an iphone 3gs. My question is, how do I get the text messaging preview to just pop up so that I can see the name only when the lock screen is on? The conventional ways of doing this, such as using turning off the SMS preview under the "passcode lock", well that option no longer exists, or if it does, I'm somehow missing it.
When I go to the "messages" setting under settings on my phone, I still don't see an option of turning it off.
If I can just get the name of the person sending the message, as I had it before, I'd be happy.
    Help!

That option still exists in Settings > Notifications > Messages > Show Prview (OFF) and View in Lock Screen (ON). Here's how to configure your Notifications and Notification Center for iOS 5: http://iphone-and-i.blogspot.com/2012/01/how-to-customize-notification-center-in .html
