Quick (hopefully easy) question about rotating video...

I'm going to be shooting some video soon that I will later be editing with FCP. I'm going to shoot the video on a Canon Vixia HF10 (AVCHD) camcorder.
In the situation I'll be shooting, with the mount I'll be using, it would be much easier for me to shoot this video with the camera fully upside-down.
If I shoot the video fully upside down, can I easily rotate it 180 degrees in FCP with no loss of quality?
Thanks!

An interesting thing about video that is shot upside down is the ballistics of the camera movement can be weirdly disconcerting. For instance, if it's a helmet- or wing-style mount, pans and tilts just feel odd.
As Eric suggests, flipping the image 180 degrees is easy but practice and evaluate.

  • Easy Question about resizing video

I searched 'Resizing Video' and there was too many unrelated results to a really simple question.
In my old program "Premiere', to resize and move a video around was very easy. You could adjust the scale and X-Y values numerically, or you could use a Free Transform like in Photoshop. Simply dragging bounding boxes for size and aspect and also dragging the clip to decide it's location.
The only way I know how to do this in FCP is I double click a clip in the sequence, it loads into the viewer, I go to the Motion Tab and then I can adjust the Scale, which is cool. But then I'm left with the Distort section to adjust position (and aspect if need be). In the Distort section there are 8 numeric fields of info to figure out and fill out just to get one clip in a different position correctly.
I'm thinking there must be another way to adjust the location (or aspect) of a video clip without spending a bit of time on exact coordinates, I want to eye-ball where I want the clip to go and simply move it there. Is the Distort feature the only way to do this? If not, which is the fastest way to move and change the dimension of a clip.
Thanks for reading, I hope there is another way, I'm not use to these calculations and they're slowing me down.

That's because it's not a simple question at all and yet every one of those threads was related to the OP's question. As you discovered, there are lots of ways to interpret "resize," during capture, editing, effects, output, viewing, encoding, printing. But the solution was even simpler than you thought. All you had to do was open the manual or the online help system. Start taking the manuals to the gym with you. FCP is not Premiere. You're going to hate FCP, you're going to love FCP but it will never behave like Premiere beyond the elements of the functional paradigm. Forget Premiere.

  • Quick and easy question about creating folder

Total Mac newbie with basic question.
I want to put all my user manuals right on my desktop. All in a folder called user manuals. How would I do this? Smart folder? Just drag 'n drop? how can I quickly find them all?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi MarieBoyer
You can easily create a Folder on the desktop, by mouse click + contol to open the contextual menu, where you can choose New Folder, then give it a name.
Or, more easily still just drag one of the existing folders onto the desktop and use it.
As for finding all manual documents, they are just documents in general, and may not even have the word manual in their name, so searching by that criteria will in that case miss them. Otherwise you may have to search by each of their names, which would be rather tedious.
So I suggest, of the manuals that you know of or come across, drag them into your new Folder on the desktop as you find them.

  • A quick and easy question about my NEW Ipod Touch.

Okay, I broke down and replaced my old ipod. This new one came with earphones, a cord to connect it to my computer and a little plastic piece that obviously fits on one end of the ipod. Here's my question: WHAT IS IT FOR?
    Thanks in advance!
    Annie

It's a dock adaptor. There are some devices (eg. speaker systems) which have a slot that fits the 30-pin dock connector for iPods, but the slot is the same size as the iPod Classic, as it is the largest iPod that is compatible with such systems. The dock adaptor that came with your iPod is supposed to fit around the base of your iPod and prevent it from being bent forwards or backwards, as this can damage or even break the dock connector.

  • Ok. quick and easy question about my Zen Vision

i'm thinking that my zen can no longer have anything added to it, although there is about 5 gbs worth of space left. it sucks has sucked for a while, but i'm trying to get over it.
my brother noticed that in the bottom of it, the part where it connects so you can make transfers and stuff, is bent. i tried unbending it but that didn't work.
and when i connect it to my comp, it says "overload" and my comp freezes for a bit.
so that's a sign to get another mp3 player right? it's a shame that this happened. he thinks i was too rough with it.
i admit that i have spent some time pushing it in when it wasn't properly fitting. but i didn't "see" it then. now looking back, i kinda laugh.
btw, there are no shops around here to repair the bend to the best of my knowledge..actually, maybe Weiss Hardware...just maybe.

Yes. LOL You word it so much nicer!
    lol...
if customer support actually does help, for a nice price, you will be -my new saviour-!
(My music is literally my life.)
OK. I checked there. They have an option of support (while the warranty is still good) and another option (that's non-technical).
I got my first Zen Vision (30 GB) March 2007. Then a replacement (this one) in May 2007. Is it still covered? I have my doubts. :P?

  • I have what is hopefully a quick and easy question. I kno...

I have what is hopefully a quick and easy question. I know almost nothing about this stuff so go easy on me . All I need to do is find out if my DHCP is enabled. I'm having problems with my Xbox 360 and one of the possible problems is this DHCP thing. However I have no idea how to find the settings for my router on my computer. If it helps I have a Wirless model BEFW11S4. Thanks in advance for any help.

You need to access your router to check if the DHCP is on.  To access the router open your browser and type in http://192.168.1.1 into the address field and hit enter.  That should open the routers log on screen and by default the user is left blank (some routers it is admin) and the password is abmin.  If you changed your routers password as you should for security reasons then use that password.  That will bring you to your routers user interface and on the main set up page should be your DHCP.

  • Questions about Air Video.

Hi, I have a couple of questions about Air Video for the Ipad. I have my Mac Pro downstairs and my PC upstairs. Does the Ipad have to be near the computer in order for the videos to play on the Ipad? I have a bunch of videos on my external hard drive. Would it work if I have an external hard drive plugged into the computer or do the videos need to be on the computer itself?

Air video will convert the video for streaming, this includes downscaling it, so it will stream smoothly over the bandwidth available on the network.
Placing media directly on the ipad allows 720p video.
Reality is you will not be able to tell the difference between dvd resolution and hi def on a screen the size of the iPad's.

  • Hopefully easy question...

I am new to TestStand and have a couple of (hopefully) easy questions.  I am using TestStand 3.5.
    1)  I have written a couple of sub-sequences in another file that we use for common tasks.  Some of the parameters we pass will always be the same variable name.  Is there a way I can get that default parameter name to show up when I write the program to call this sub-sequence so I wont have to enter it each time?
    2)  When I run a program that calls a sub-sequence in the above file, the first time I run it, I get an error saying the resource already exists...  If I open the sub-sequence file in TestStand, and then close it, it is fine after that.
    Thanks for your help!

With TestStand the answer is usually 'yes' it is just a matter of which way is best for you.
    1)
TestStand has a full application interface so that you can pragmatically read parameter names and types, and populate calling programs with the right stuff.  This takes some learning.  There may be an easier way depending on what you are doing.
I'm not sure what you mean when you say you write a program to call the subsequence.   In  TestStand 4.0 ( don't have 3.5 installed) you can create a Sequence Call template step that can be used in new sequences that you program.  That is, I can open a new sequence, drop a generic Sequence Call step and rename it, configure it to call your subsequence by choosing the right path, sequence file, values/expressions to be passed to the subsequence, and then I can save this step as a template (drag to the Step section of the template window).  Then, when I have a brand new sequence, I can drop an instance of this template step into my sequence, with the parameter values preconfigured.  Assuming all the expressions are valid, you're ready to go.
    2)
Without more information I can't help with this one.  Perhaps the sequence file that contains the called subsequence is not in one of your search directories (see Configure>>Search Directories) and therefore it can't be found until you open, identify and save the calling sequence file. What error code are you getting?

MSI live update is not picking up the update again, so my question is, how do i know if it flashed correctly since the bios date and version remained the same?

  • Comprehensive overview/question about organizing videos and movies

I've made a few movies here and there in the original iMovie, have made a fair amount of home movies using FCE. I have 20 years worth of videos scattered around on HI-8 formatting and some videos I downloaded from a hand held digital cheapo-movie cam. I'm to the point of trying to figure out the big picture on importing, structuring, storing, and sharing these files between iMovie, FCEHD 3.5.1, mobileme, my iPhone, etc.
I'm now wanting to start uploading movies to gallery.me.com. I started doing some of this before I got cancer last year. I'm basically restarting this whole process now that I'm beyond the rigors of chemotherapy and I'm trying to make a systematic approach to managing video files and already made movies. I have a lot of questions and would appreciate any insight you can offer in this discussion forum or if you recommend I copy this over to another discussion forum. I'm not sure to even begin hot to explain all this, so be patient as I try to start this process.
#1 - I've tried using iMovie 8 in the past. I ended up, somehow, with clips here, there, and who knows where. The original iMovie seemed rather straight forward and seemed to work in conjunction with iPhoto rather seamlessly. As iMovie made that big change some time back, I quickly backed out of using that program to manage clips as I couldn't find where they were stored and more importantly, they seemed to start disappearing after time. Is iMove 08 a good resource to manage clips or is it a bit of a dead end for people who are using various programs such as FCE and so forth? Seems the transparency of how the newer iMovie manages files is a bit not-so-transparent to me anymore and I simply am not finding many of the files in iMovie 08 that I can easily spot in iPhoto. Not sure what has happened there, but I can find the files in iPhoto and browse them, but NOT in iMovie 08. Help?
#2 - the only real reason I'm asking about iMovie at all is that I want to start uploading files from HI-8 tapes into my computer rather quickly and make simple basically unedited videos of what is on the Hi-8 tapes, then perhaps transport onto mobileme and/or make some DVD's. I did a few of those somehow before the cancer/chemo deal, but can't really recall the exact steps I took. Rough bout with cancer last year and my brain is a bit fried to be honest, not to mention all of this is a big hard to grasp deal for a RN who isn't trained in video stuff at this point in his life. Besides, I ended up having to reinstall my entire OS - long story. Bottom line, the few movies I do have on mobileme are in .m4v format. Not a big deal when using my mac at home, but notice that it causes iTunes to load onto my pc's at work or when visiting friends. Slow, clunky, and not sure how it wound up in that format. I'm thinking I did that somehow through iMovie or Quicktime 7 Pro. Before I go that route again, I need to ask about #3.
#3 - I just exported my first high definition video from FCE. I did so because we got our first new TV in 22 years, nice HD flat screen. I'm wanting to start understanding options for exporting videos onto mobileme. I got Quicktime Pro 7 and used the H264 or some option like that (file>share). It was able to take 1.5 gig high def video I did over my cancer journey and put it seamlessly onto mobileme. But it is in the .m4v video option which seems to cause some people and computers problems because of the whole proprietary iTunes angle. Is there a way around this being forced to use iTunes and simply share to mobileme gallery using .mov? I tried the file>export option, seems to want to use movie folder and I'm guessing that is another iTunes deal.
#4 - as I load files into my computer from HI-8 format and the newer cheap little HD dual SD card camera I got, those seem to either want to go into iMovie's folders (which I mentioned my confusion about above) or I can manually put them into a file structure that I'm slowly learning to build using FCE. I don't mind the FCE option and it seems logical. I still run into the problem of how to share web based content of the videos. Using iDVD is rather straightforward, but I'm wanting to use some kind of web centric approach to sharing my videos on the output and have one big file structure for organizing my files/videos on the input.
I notice that iMovie has many exporting/sharing options in its menu. Are they really any different/better/worse than what I have with quicktime Pro 7? Should I even try to utilize iMovie at all or simply go with the capture option on FCE? I at least can find the files and organize them with FCE.
I'm not sure how to further word this at the moment as I'm trying to better understand all this as I'm moving forward.
Any suggestions you might have at this point would be most beneficial. I'm sure as I get further into this, I'll start clarifying my own questions and thoughts.
Any resources you can point me to for newer (but not totally new) to video structure input/exporting on the mac?
    Thanks,
    Robert

    Robert,
A lot of questions, perhaps to much to go into detail but,
I can second the views of AppleMan
Since iMovie 08 I finally am able to organize and categorize my clips in an easy way. Just recently I made a DvD for one of my grandchildren containing a selection of events from over the last to years. Really a joy (not only the kid ). This would have been a much larger job without that.
When I like to do real "sophisticated" movie editing I use FCE and pick up the clips from the eventsfolder from iMovie.
Of course if you are happy with FCE for organizing (I found that a bit hard), you always can use the File->export-> quicktime movie feature and use Quicktime for uploading to mobileme or use the File->export->Quicktime conversion function.
Also within iMovie you can use the: share ->export with Quicktime, and use that to export your movie in the format you prefer.

  • A Quick and EZ question about Symbols

Hi everyone! I have a really quick question:
I'm making a cartoon movie at 30 fps. I've split up my
cartoon character's body parts and I've made them into graphic
symbols. I want the symbols to be as efficient and "right sized" as
possible. So, as far as playback is concerned, what would you
    suggest I do:
Make 1 symbol with 5 layers and 50 frames... (to be used by
    itself)
    OR
Make 5 symbols with 1 layer and 50 frames?? (to be used all
    at once)
Hopefully, my question is not too confusing. I'm basically
asking what's better to do: use one large symbol by itself or many
    smaller symbols at once.
It's important to me because eventually i could have all 7 of
my cartoon characters on stage at once which would mean using 7
large sized symbols at once or 35 smaller symbols at once
The symbols are all mostly graphic symbols. And, when i'm
done, my library will be containing hundreds of symbols.
Note: I'll be converting the movie to video format so
internet loading time isn't so much my concern as is general
playback and avoiding "slowdown". I want to avoid lag at all costs.
Thank you for the feedback in advance!!! :)
    Frank

I really don't understand 100% what you are asking - when you
say "large" what do you mean? file
size or scale? And why would it matter? And what does "at
once" mean? On the timeline at the same
time? If so...why is that an issue?
What do you want to do?
If you are exporting to video then the issue of "slowdown and
lag" is off the table as video is a
    fixed-frame rate format.

  • Quick (and urgent) Question about Intel G5's

Just a quick question about the new intel G5's.
I currently have bunch of software for my PPC G5 which is a Dual 2ghz. Software includes Adobe CS2, Macromedia Studio, Quark 6, etc, etc.
If I purchase the new intel mac, would I be able to use the same software? or would I be forced to purchase a whole new set of everything I currently have?
If the software will work on the intel G5, would it perform at the same rate/better than how it performs now on my PPC g5?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Most of the time you get a real 'hit' when a program first opens that is PPC. Very sluggish. They will require and use more memory than otherwise, too.

  • Easy question about Reformatting

    Hello all,
I am trying to reformat my HD after I have deleted Windows XP off of a partition. The reason for this is an upgrade to Vista and a larger allotment of HD space. My question is:
I am using Backup v3.1.1. (v369) and I have FULL backup files of my Home folder, and my Music folder (as backup for my backup) for all my iTunes libraries. These are located on a portable HD. Are these the correct files to have backed up in order to have my MAC the way it was before I started the process? If so, then once the reformatting is complete, how do I get it all back onto my MAC permanently? Will all my apps and tweaks work as before?
I am sure this is a simple question, however, I have never had to do this with a MAC, and I want to make sure I have all bases covered before I begin this. Any other comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks All!

You call this an easy question ???
    Just messin with ya
Your home folder is the most important folder containing your music, documents, preferences etc. but a lot is also stored in the system folder and library folder outside your home folder, if you want to be ensured of an exact copy of your current system the best way to go at this is to clone your system partition.
The app i use for this is carbonCopyCloner
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
To add to this.. i've heard there is software for the mac that allows you to make adjustments to the size of your partitions without having to format the drive, i don't know the names of these products but i do know that it's very risky to use them, if you decide to use an app like that make sure you have proper backups of everything just in case it goes wrong.

  • A (hopefully new) question about MMS

OK - I have a question about MMS messaging and using email as a work-around.
I understand that I can send picture messages via email, and I have been doing so successfully. However, some friends will be traveling internationally and we would like to be able to send pictures back and forth.
Doesn't this mean they are going to end up paying approx. $4 per picture message because of data use charges rather than the $1.30 per message flat rate AT&T charges for regular international MMS messages because it is being sent as an email to me at [email protected]?

If you have an iphone, and they send to [email protected], you'll be getting a text that points you to the at&t site to pick up your mms. If they send it to your regular email address, then you'll receive it as a regular email when you check your email on your phone. I assume that's what you've been doing, but perhaps I misunderstand.
As for them, if they have iphones, they shouldn't use MMS, but instead find a wifi spot and send a regular email. Then they pay nothing for it. If they send over EDGE, then it's going to incur data charges.
If they are NOT using an iphone, and can send MMS messages, then they can send to you via MMS using the $1.30 flat rate charge (since AT&T will charge based on the sender, not on whether you're picking it up on an iphone or not).
For what it's worth, if they have AT&T, they can send to "121" and put your regular email address in as the first line, and you'll get it by email instead of a text pointing you to at&t's mms site.
    I hope that makes sense.
