Quick Look of Plain Text Got Messed Up

Hi,
As a web designer, I often work with text files and I use Quick Look a lot to view my files quickly without opening any application.
Normally all plain text files such as .txt .html .css .php .srt etc. are shown in a monospace typeface in front of a white background. Other formatted text files such as .rtf are shown in the font as formatted (duh).
Recently the Quick Look of my plain text file are shown in a Serif typeface on a yellowish background. This is annoying since I really like to have my plain text files shown in "plain text". The formatted text files are shown correctly, however.
I have a suspicion that this is cause by Writer Pro app because I installed it recently. And the font and background in Quick Look seems just like those in Writer Pro.
I've checked in /System/Library/QuickLook and nothing is suspicious and the modified time of the folder is long time ago before the issue occured. The /Library/QuickLook is fine as well, only iBooksAuthor.qlgenerator and iWork.qlgenerator are there.
Question:
How to set this back to default?
How to tweak the style of Quick Look if it is tweakable?
Thanks for your time and attention.

I was not able to find any "report a problem" on the order status page.
I did wander about the Apple website and I finally found a form where I could report a problem with a print product. Apple could not have done a better job hiding the ability to report that something didn't go correctly.
I filled out the form and submitted it. Apple simply spat back some gibberish about security and encryption and suggested I upgrade to a newer browser. I'm using Internet Explorer 11, for crying out loud. I tried to back out to recover what I had written but it was lost.
Apple is really slipping now. This is three unpleasent experiences in a row - a bad order, awful chat support (from two different people - although I'm not convinced they were real people), and now a difficult to navigate and, in the end, buggy website for reporting problems. This is not good enough. I spent $345 on three books and am so far not very satisfied.

  • Font Used For Quick Look Plain Text Files?

    Hi,
    Does anyone know what font Leopard uses when you Quick Look a plain text file? It's one that isn't anti-aliased. I can't seem to find it anywhere in my Font Book.

    You could override that with code in userContent.css, either for all websites or for specific websites.

  • Quick look for text files with non-registered extensions

    It seems there was a way in 10.5 and 10.6 to register certain extensions with Quick Look to tell them how to preview a file. I have a lot of plain text files with different extensions that are not initially recognized by Quick Look. How do I hack the registry to tell Quick Look to preview a .cfg (or .aux, etc.) file as plain text?

    How do I add support to Quick Look

  • Quick Look for files without extensions.

    I have many files without extensions that quick look does not recognize as text files. Bash shell scripts generally do not use an extension, for example (they are identified by their first line). Similarly I have a lot of text file notes w/o a ".txt" extensions.
    Is there any way to have quick look recognize these as text files? They currently have either text edit or textmate as their default "open with" app. I presume there is a config file of some sort for quick look that will let me default files with no extension to text files, but have not found it yet.

    Hi,
    You have the choice between xml or pdf, in later versions of designer you can choose with a dropdown on the email button Object palette, the "Submit As";
    In earlier version you had to edit the XML Source and change the format from xml to pdf (or vice-versa);

  • What do plain text emails look like in Outlook by default?

    I've been using rich text in my signature, so that all mails end up going rich text. I know that how it looks on the other end depends on the fonts they have, but I was wondering what plain text emails look like by default in Outlook. I don't remember because, if I recall correctly, one of the things I had changed when I used to use that beast was setting the font to a fixed width like courier for plain text. Thanks for any info. I'm just curious whether my plain text messages will look strange to my clients.

  • Messed up my Quick Look Folder

    Hi,
    I was trying to install "Folder Viewer" (by XDD) on my system after upgrading to Snow Leopard, and I think I messed up or deleted much of the contents within System/Library/Quick Look. All I'm seeing now within ..\Quick Look is "Folder.glgenerator" (the Folder Viewer app) and "iWork.glgenerator". I thought there was more stuff inside ..\Quick Look prior to my attempt to add Folder Viewer.
    I tried to search the Snow Leopard install DVD hoping I could just copy over a new Quick Look folder, but I can't seem to find it on the DVD, even after viewing the package contents.
    I didn't back up prior to attempting to install Folder Viewer because I didn't think a simple drag and drop was such a big deal. I guess I was wrong.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

    You should NEVER mess with anything in /System by hand. 3rd party quicklook plugins should be installed in /library/quicklook not /system/library/quicklook.

    yes, you were. as i said, making any changes to anything in /system is a big deal and should never be done by hand.
    you can install the missing content of system/library/quicklook from the snow leopard install DVD using Pacifist. use Pacifist's search window to quickly find it.

  • Firefox 11 beta is having issues loading Flash and HTML content, shows plain text instead of images

    I'm not sure what is causing the problem but it has been happening since beta 10 and now its also in beta 11. Randomly when I load any web page the page is displayed in plain text leaving all the HTML or flash content blank. Yes I have the most recent version of flash installed along with Java just in case it was looking for that mess as well. Sometimes the pages load fine, and sometimes they don't, it's like playing lotto with the internet. The only fix I know of is to either keep refreshing the page and "hope" it catches it on the reload, or closing Firefox and running CCleaner. Some times FF will load some of the visual data and leave gaps but usually its just basic text mode. I'm at a loss as to whether the problem is from Firefox or my ISP being a douche, either way its annoying that Firefox is not showing internet pages like it used to.
    Hate to see it happening but it looks like Firefox is on its way to being just another Internet Explorer clone (failure). Should have stayed with your original team, all the new folks you have hired are really mucking up the whole project and its goal of a free and open internet. Not to mention writing bad code and costing you money and more importantly the user base.
    (Update, now it's not doing it go figure, but I'm sure it will do it again at some point, perhaps its not Firefox and something else, I'll keep my eye on it and try to report any findings)

    If you use extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extension) like <i>Adblock Plus</i> or <i>NoScript</i> or <i>Flash Block</i> that can block content then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.
    Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    *Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • "Send link" inserts plain text into an email instead of a hyperlink. How do I correct this?

    I got a new computer and installed Firefox. Previously, when is sent a link to a website, the URL automatically pasted as a hyperlink. Now it shows up as plain text requiring the recipient of my email to cut and paste the URL into his browser.
    How do I fix this?

    There is usually a toolbar button in the editor to turn a text link into a clickable hyperlink (look for a chain like button).<br />
    You can select the text and click that button to turn the link into a clickable hyperlink.<br />
    If you can't find the button then hover them all to check the tooltip of each.<br />

  • Quick Look is now testing my patience.

    I purchased Snow Leopard exactly on the date it was released, and have since then every day been nagged every few seconds about Quick Look crashing, to the point which it's beginning to become unbearable, Yes I have tried every single method possible that Google could provide me with, and I have also reinstalled OSX, with no luck what so ever. I do know that more than one person has posted this here, but to be honest they had no replies, so I am going to try my luck...
    Please help me? (PS: This happens in both 32 bit and 64 bit kernel modes)

    1. Fresh install of OSX 10.6 running in both 32-bit and 64-bit kernel modes.
    How did you get your data back onto the fresh install? If you used Migration Assistant, you probably imported the problem (likely caused by some corrupt settings file somewhere) right back into your fresh install.
    OTOH, if it happens on a clean system, you may have some kind of hardware issue, though I can't imagine what kind of hardware issue would only affect QuickLook! Perhaps zap your PRAM? (Restart and hold command-option-P-R until you hear a second startup chime.)
    2. Deleting ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.QuickLookDaemon.plist .
    Good thought. You may also want to try trashing:
    /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.quicklook.plist
    3. Repairing partitions from both Disk Utility and Install DVD.
    Do you mean repair permissions? If so, you shouldn't repair permissions while booted from the install disk. You should always do this using the copy of Disk Utility on your hard drive, while booted from your hard drive as you normally would be.
    OTOH, repairing the hard drive can only be done on the boot drive while booted from the install disk.
    4. Using the following applications to run all tasks: MainMenu & OnyX.
    What tasks? Regardless, this is probably unnecessary:
    [Five Mac Maintenance Myths|http://www.macworld.com/article/133684/2008/06/maintenance_intro.html]
    5. Uninstalling Perian and reinstalling.
    Is QuickLook only failing on videos, or is it failing for all types of files? Did you make sure you've got the latest version of Perian?

  • Can't customize Finder toolbar, and where's Quick Look?

    Hi, all. I'm (of course) hoping for some easy answers here. I recently got a refurb iMac 24"--a beautiful thing, like new. (Used Migration Assistant to bring over old iMac docs and settings.) Since using this new iMac and Leopard, I have yet to see the Quick Look "eye" icon anywhere. Highlighting a doc and hitting spacebar brings up Quick Look (yay!), but there's no option for Quick Look in my Finder menu: no "eye" icon. And under Finder's View menu, most of the options are grayed-out: I can't select "as Icons," "as List," "as Columns," "as Cover Flow"; or "Show Path Bar" or "Hide Status Bar"; or "Hide Toolbar" or "Customize Toolbar." What's up with this?
    I did an archive and install this morning to see whether it would give me fresh access to Leopard, but no change. (Hoping not to have to erase and install, since I have Time Machine and Time Capsule playing well together and don't want to mess with their relationship...)
    Any insight anyone?
    Thanks in advance!

    If you Ctl+CLick on an empty area of a Finder window tool bar, do you get the Customize Toolbar option? Is the Quick Look icon there to add? If you remove and then re-add the grayed-out icons, do they become active?

  • TextEdit - Plain Text Files That Open In Windows?

    Hi. Just got an iMac. I've been trying to make plain text files in TextEdit that show up correctly in Windows on a PC. I've tried saving the same document in 4 different formats:
    - Plan Text Unicode (UTF-8)
    - Plain Text Unicode (UTF-16)
    - Plain Text Western (Mac OS Roman)
    - Plain Text Western (Windows Latin 1)
    But none of these look right on a PC. All of the line breaks I've entered show up replaced by black rectangles. Why is this?
    What format should I save as in TextEdit, to create Plain Text files that are compatible with both PC and Macs?

    First, note that TextEdit does not create plain text files, it creates rich text files (.rtf). If you truly want plain text, try the free TextWrangler:
    http://www.barebones.com/
    As to the line break problem, Macs use just a carriage return as the end-of-line character, while Windows uses a carriage return followed by a line break character. At least, that's how I understand it. Most likely, whatever app you're using on Windows is dumb enough that it can't figure out what to do with the Mac line endings. TextWrangler will let you change the line breaks, so you could use it to create plain text files with Windows line breaks. Of course, that doesn't help if you didn't really want plain text (ie, absolutely no styling, just raw text).

  • New update destroys quick look on raw images?

    got a new mountain lion update today-- supposedly something about raw image handling??
    and now quick look is messed up for raw images, preview also..........it only shows whites.....like all my photos are washed out....the only way to view raw images now is in PS
    can i undo the update i did this morning...or is there some other work around?

    1. First off, you must have a backup.  If you don't ALL YOUR WORK WILL EVENTUALLY BE LOST!  I strongly recommend you go to an Apple Store or authorized service center, or http://www.apple.com/usergroups/ and have someone direct you how to find your hard disk capacity, and then determine the hard disk to buy from http://www.macsales.com/ for your backup.
    Your capacity is what you want to purchase externally.  Once you have that,
    get Carbon Copy Cloner from Download Version 3.5.2.
    Once you configure Carbon Copy Cloner to select the source and destination, you'll be greeted with these options:
    Select Customize these settings:
    Make sure Deleted immediately is selected in the first pulldown, and Overwritten in the second.
    Once this is done, you never have to do anything more than click on clone in the bottom right, when you attach the external hard disk.
    I recommend you do this before trying to download the corrected RAW drivers.   When you know this, please come back, and someone can direct you where to download it.
    Backing up is not an option.  All media fails eventually.

  • Plain-text parser

    Hi everybody
    The project I've been working on involves parsing plain-text, structured messages. These messages contain records of fixed length, and of several different types. Some of these record types have data & behaviour in common, so that it feels quite natural AND good practice to use inheritance
    to illustrate this, here's (roughly) the grammar of my messages :
    Message => MessageHeader Invoice* MessageFooter
    Invoice => InvoiceHeader Record* InvoiceFooter
    Record => RecordX | RecordY | RecordZas I said, RecordX, RecordY and RecordZ have data & behaviour in common (same applies for MessageHeader/Footer and InvoiceHeader/Footer) and are composed of many fields of different types
    The first treatment I want to apply is to parse such messages from the filesystem and construct a graph of objects (in order to save it to DB afterwards via hibernate)
    How would you organise a suitable and proper-OO parser package in order to minimize code redundancy, allow TDD... I have already written dozens of solutions, none satisfies me 100%...
    If you want further info / description / excerpts of my precedent solutions, no problem ! I don't want to be TOO specific, since I have the feeling that there's some kind of generic pattern that could apply to this problem elegantly... Am I wrong ?

    Parsing is seperate from the graph.sure ok about that
    So what exactly do you think needs improvement?I don't like these long parse(InputStream) methods
    that just call some "basic parser" (implementing
    methods like parse, parseInt, parseShort, and so on)
    again and again, especially when a lot of parsing
    activity code is duplicated (same sub-sequences of
    fields in records of different types)
    It gives you something like that :
    public RecordX parse(InputStream inputStream) {
    ....I don't see a problem.
    You can generalizing it using a decription component if you wish.
    But, speaking from experience, unless you have a lot of these which are very similar then doing so it makes it harder to maintain (due to special cases.) And it doesn't make it faster.
    >
    >>
    And "many fields" doesn't say much. In particular
    just because an attribute exists or doesn't exist
    does not necessarily imply that inheritance is
    needed. For example I am still a human whether I
    have a job or not.what I meant is : some records of different types
    have many attributes and the most part of behaviour
    in common so parsing them in separate classes
    (specialised parsers) induces lengthy methods and
    lots of duplicate code... This couldn't possibly
    scale if there were many more types of records (I
    feel I'm deserving a good "YAGNI" here ;-))
    I suspect that you look at something like the following two snippets and see 'duplicate' code (pseudo representation of what you are doing.)
             fieldx1 = parse.parseInt(5)
             parse.skip(3)
             fieldx2 = parse.parseInt(7)
             fieldy1 = parse.parseInt(5)
             parse.skip(3)
             fieldy2 = parse.parseInt(4)
             fieldy3 = parse.parseInt(7)
    There are similarities in the above but they are not duplicate.
    And you could create a routine that handles both but there are so many dissimilarities between them that the duplicate part would become obscure by the part that isn't similar.
    roughly, when I'm looking at the parser module of the
    project and the classes involved, I can't help the
    feeling there's something wrong :
    It isn't quick and easy but learning how to generate code makes the production of such code a lot easier.
    Instead of writing code you would produce something like this....
           fieldx1 int 5
           skip 3
           fieldx2 int 7
    This would then be fed to a generator which then produces the appropriate code.
    Various ways exist to do this...
    - JavaCC
    - XDoclet
    - roll your own
    And there are probably others (pretty sure there are alternatives to JavaCC.)
    However whether this "helps" depends on what is being parsed. (Although for myself I find it more interesting to generate code even if it takes me as long to do it as if I did it manually.)
    This couldn't possibly scale if there were many more types of recordsDon't strive to build code that meets all possibilities. Strive to build code that meets the current requirements and which meets the known future possibilities. (Known is a tentative term and isn't limited to just requirements in hand but can be based on a comment from someone that suggests something like this might be needed in the future.)
    Having built systems that parse various structures I find it unlikely that additions in the future are going to easily fit a current model. Many times they are completely different.

  • Quick Look copies attachments to Mail Downloads folder!

    Holy maloly, I just discovered why my MacBook Pro was slowly losing disk space! Every time I use Quick Look to check an attachment in Mail, a copy of the attachment is placed in the Mail Downloads folder of my user Library. My writing work entails quickly looking at lots of very large attachments and e-mailing estimates to clients. Quick Look has been a great time saver for this. Nice being able to stay in Mail and not have to open Word to examine the job. But I don't need all these additional copies taking up space on my hard drive. As far as I know, Mail is the only program that does this.
    Is there any way of telling Quick Look to NOT make copies of Mail attachments?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    Attachments to messages are actually stored in the mailbox along with the message text. It is when an attachment must be opened with another application, such as a Word document with Word, that the attachment is also placed in the Mail Downloads folder. There it can be used and edited by the application used to open it, and from there can be returned as edited to the sender or to others.
    There is no reason files must permanently stay, but if you edit or otherwise alter files that have been attached, then you must elect some place to keep them for your own use.
    You will note that in the Mail Preferences/General there is also a selection regarding when to remove files from Downloads folder if not edited. Any file that is not edited need not remain in the Downloads folder since it already exists in the mailbox with the message it came attached to.
    Image files, since they can be opened directly in the Mail window, by Mail, do not go into the Downloads folder, but if any were opened from the message, with say, Photoshop, then that image file would also be sent to the Downloads, temporarily.
