Quick q on images - with both color & BW contents

I frequently see images, typically .gifs, that contain - for example - both a color version of some text or a logo AND a BW version directly beneath.
Why are they created this way AND how can I eaily create them? A technical pointer would be appreciated, but a quick 'splanation would work, too. Thx.

You have to calculate the width and height of the image and then the relative position of what is displayed.

Photoshop diplays all images with desaturated colors (Images look fine when opened in other apps)

All of a sudden, when I open any image in Photoshop, the colors appear to be desaturated...In Photoshop only. When I open that same image in Window Picture Viewer, or Quicktimer, or even if I drag the image into a brower window, the colors appear fine. But in Photoshop, something is clearly wrong. Now, I can make color adjustments to the image, but when I save and reopen reopen it in another application, I can see that color changes have been made, but they still don't match what Photoshop is displaying.
The images are RGB image...I've checked the color space setings in Photoshop, and they are the default (Edit > Color Settings: North American General Purpose 2 / RGB: sRGB IEC61966-2.1 / CMYK: US Web Coated (SWOP) V2, etc, etc). I also made sure View > Proof Setup was set to: Working CMYK. I even reset Photoshop to it's default settings (by holding down CTRL-ALT-SHIFT on launching Photoshop)...But the images still appear desaturated when I open them in Photoshop...So, I don't understand how this is still a Photoshop problem...But then again, they look fine when I use any other application on my computer to open them, so it's clearly not an issue with my monitor.
The frustrating thing is, I haven't made any changes to Photoshop OR my monitor (that I know about)...Photoshop has worked perfectly for me for years, and now there's this SNAFU that I just can not figure out.
Any suggestions?

It's difficult to provide help without knowing your level of color-management expertise, but I think you've helped us some with that in post number 2.
Color management is basically this: Images and devices have certain color characteristics, and these are described by color profiles, sometimes also called color spaces.
1. You should not need to use the Proof Setup at all to view your images on your monitor. When things are set up properly Photoshop shows you accurate color without your choosing View - Proof Colors.
2. A color-managed application like Photoshop will try to show you accurate color on your display by interpreting both the image profile and your monitor profile and transforming the colors accordingly. BY DEFINITION this will look different than other applications which don't do color-management as these just pump the image RGB values directly out to the display.
Thus:
If your monitor profile indicates your monitor has a wide gamut, images with embedded profiles may appear less saturated inside Photoshop than from non-color-managed apps.
If you view images that have an embedded wide gamut profile (such as Adobe RGB 1998 or ProPhoto RGB), Photoshop and other color-managed applications will interpret that profile and the colors will likely appear more saturated in Photoshop than in a non-color-managed application.
It sounds as though the first case applies in your case here.
You can check to see what monitor profile is associated with your monitor through OS settings. I'm thinking, based on the caption buttons in your screen grab, that you've got Windows XP, but rather than go further with that assumption, I'll ask you to verify it first.

PSE 11 - How save image with printer color profile?

I use an outside service to make prints. How can I save an image in PSE 11 in either TIFF or JPEG format with the color profile for the outside lab's printer? Thanks.

You can print a photo using the correct printer profile for the lab printer. In the print dialog box , go to "Page Option>Color Management" and then choose Color Handling as "Photoshop Managers color". Now click the printer profile dropdown and choose the profile for your lab printer. If you are not able to find the profile for you printer then choose "Printer Manages Color"
To your second question the answer is that you cannot save the image with the correct colors for printing. You can only convert the profile of your image to Adobe RGB which matches gamut of most printer profiles using "Image Menu>Convert Color Profile and choose Adobe RGB.

Does Photoshop always blends transparent images with white color?

It looks like merged-image-data in PSD files contains RGB data which is blended with white color (based on transparency). Is that correct for all versions of Photoshop/PSD? Can I disable it or change that color?

I think you're misinterpreteting what you're seeing. In the specific example you cited, IrfanView is reading the flattened composite, assuming you're saving as a Maximum Compatibility PSD, as it hasn't the ability to mix layers.
Perhaps this flattened composite is what you're asking about.
In the actual layers of the file, when Maximize Compatibility is not specified, Photoshop puts pure white in the pixels where there is complete transparency, but for partially transparent areas there's no premultiplication.

Is it possible to create a .pdf with BOTH color and grayscale images?

I am in the final phases of a book project (4 years in the making!) that has both grayscale and color graphics. When I save as a .pdf via the Adobe PDF printer driver and distill, I end up with a .pdf that only has color graphics despite the fact that some images were grayscale to begin with. I'd like the grayscale images to remain graysale in the pdf. Is that possible?
I am using older software framemaker 6.0 and acrobat & distiller 6.0 and am reluctant to change now, I will upgrade for a second edition, but not now.

Create the document in layers with the background on a seperate layer than the text. Export the PDF with"Create Acrobat Layers" selected (it will need to be at least version 1.5).
Open the PDF in Acrobat, choose the background layer then Options>Properties>Initial State and under "print" choose "Never prints".

Uniform Color across 50+ images with Kodak color bar

Hi,
I shoot 50+ paintings using a Kodak color bar at the bottom of each image, thing is during the shoot the light change from start to finish as the sun moved around, (dumb I know), so is there anyway to get the images to be uniform color across the whole collection. I want to acheive where the color bar is exactly the same in each image?

You're going to have to do an individual gray balance on a white or gray patch on every image, as it will not be the same correction for each image. As the light changes it changes color, which is going to be the biggest factor. The changing angles of light reflecting off the paintings can also affect the color rendition. In the end, it really depends on how accurately you need to reproduce the color in the paintings. The more accurate you need to be, the more you will need to make individual corrections in Ps for each image.
When I do this, I correct to the actual painting viewed under a Solux lamp 90 degrees away from my monitor. The best and most accurate color I've seen to date is processing the raw files in CaptureOne and gray balancing to a portion of the white seamless paper in the background. Even complicated paint pigments came right into line with a single click. The input profiles in C1 are truly amazing now.
You may run into problems also with the Kodak color bars themselves. Far too often when you get them looking right, your painting is way off. The pigments used in the color bars react differently to light than the pigments in the painting, and the grayscale steps are never right. They always seem to clip both ends long before you start clipping any detail in your painting.

Lightroom 5.6 crashes when images with some color profiles are in import

I am a recent subscriber to Adobe CC. I run LR 5.6 64bit on my Win 7 PC. Whenever I seek to import images previously processed in iPhoto or LR elements into my catalog, ACC Lightrom crashes. I suspect it is because the original editing program used a different color profile. Adobe techs will not give me an answer when I ask for an overall cure. Are their any technical documents on the web that would enable me to deal with this issue? If so, I cannot find them, and I do not want to call Adobe again and again to get LR 5.6 restored.

DCTDecode filter used for image with Indexed color space?

I've seen examples of images in PDF that have BitsPerComponent=8, with an Indexed Color Space, but the filter is DCTDecode. This doesn't seem intuitive to me, as JPG supports 24-bit RGB and 8-bit gray. I haven't heard of 8-bit color JPG so I'm just wondering how this is done?
I'm just trying to understand how this works if someone could please indulge me with a technical explanation it would be most appreciated. I understand how the image is represented using the colorspace, I just don't understand how this filter is applicable to 8-bit data.
Please note, I understand that it's not an actual JPG file, that the data is only using the compression scheme.

DCTDecode is entirely legal for 1-component (greyscale) samples as you've noted. There is no problem there.
Remember, that applying a filter (and later decoding it) is entirely separate from the meaning of the data. So it's possible to use filters that just don't map correctly to the data. For example, greyscale DCTDecode could be used to encode samples which were, on decoding, to be treated as RGB. It wouldn't compress well, but the meaning isn't affected.
But DCTDecode for an Indexed colour space is very unusual. Don't look for special treatment, it would be enconding the image data, which would be offsets into the colour table. And of course DCTDecode is lossy, so decompressed data should be close, but is not always equal, to the original.
In most cases of Indexed colour, this would lead to random and useless changes to colours. But it is entirely possible to have colours which map into a linear and smooth set of shades of the same colour - such as 256 shades of pink. An image using such an Indexed colour space is a candidate for using DCTDecode.
In using filters, it is best to forget what you think you know about the data, and just follow the precise rules of the filter.

B&W image with color profile true B&W?

I have a 10mb B&W visual saved as RGB. It's 10mb which is too large.
I changed it to grayscale and it goes down to 3mb. Still too large.
How else do I change a B&W image with RGB color profile to plain B&W? Or is 3 mb the lowest I'm going to get?
OR how do I just make the file smaller? Changed Resolution from 300 to 72 but stayed at 3 mb.

File size is dominated by pixel data. If you save in a layered file format the file will contain pixels for many layers. Different files formats support different things and compression. 10MB and 3MB would be very large image if the file format is Jpeg. For Jpeg only supports 8 Bit color mode and does not support layers and transparency.
I downloaded your 9+ MB png file and found it hard to believe the file was that large when I opened in Photoshop. So I did a Save As and save it xxxxxx.png it size turned out to be 131KB

Yes, you can create such a card. This example is the folded Holiday Colors theme. Just choose the layout for the inside that includes a full page photo on top and text on the bottom.

Image with transparent background changes surrounding fill color when PMS...

Hello.
I have a .PSD image I'm using in InDesign CS3. It's a greyscale image with a transparent background. When I bring it into InDesign and set the background color of the image box to a Pantone and then print it, the PMS color within the area of the .PSD image size changes color compared to the rest of the page. But, when the same document is printed, but with "All Spot to Process" via the Ink Manager, the page prints fine. I get the same results on a number of different Canon and Xerox proofing printers. I have uploaded a PDF to my web server showing an example of the results I'm getting the PDF can be found here:

The first page is the document printed normally. You can see the color change in the green (Pantone Green). The second page is the same document printed with "All Spot to Process" via Ink Manager.
Does anyone know why this happens when I leave it as printing a spot color?

I totally forgot to put that in my post. Yes, I am putting logos with transparent backgrounds in front of colored rectangles. That's how I noticed that this one logo is showing up with a white background. The weird thing is that the other two logos are fine. I did find a different version of this logo and this one works fine. The one that works fine is a JPG and the one that shows up with a white background is a JPG.
