Quick Question: "Transfer Information to this Mac"

Hello.
I just purchased today the 15inch MacBook Pro (NOT the new Retina Display).
As part of the setup, it asks if I want to "Transfer Information to this Mac" - which I would like to do from my old Black MacBook.
My question is this:
If I click the transfer, does it transfer EVERYTHING, or do I get to manually select what gets transfered over (such as some music and documents, but not all).
Thank you for your time and help!

you can give this look:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1291
you should upgrade to 10.6.8
faster more stable:

It should xfer all, but te older stuff.

  • Transfer Information to This Mac from Encrypted Time Machine?

I just got a new Macbook Pro (factory fresh) and wanted to move my data from my Encrypted Time Machine (on a USB drive).  The older Mac that I'm moving of off is running the 10.7.2 and I have been back it up daily to my Time Machine disk.
I attach the USB drive but it doesn't show up or prompt me for my passphase. So I can not Transfer Information to This Mac from an encrypted time machine drive. That has to be a bug.
Has anyone else tried this and gotten it to work?

I backed up with a encrypted timemachine and needed to do a reinstall of my macbook pro OSX lion.
When I reinstalled everything I lost a lot of files on the encrypted timemachine but it is still decrypting so I hope I get those missing files back or am kinda a dead man..
    Not sure if this helps.

  • HT204350 Why won't my MacBook Pro recognize the connected USB external drive when trying to 'Transfer Information to this Mac'?

I recently bought a second-hand MacBook Pro (mid-2010, i7, I'll call this New Mac).  I want to transfer my accounts and data from the first MacBook Pro (mid-2010, i5, I'll call this Old Mac).  I took a Time Machine Backup of the Old Mac, using an external USB drive.  After erasing the drive and installing Maverick on the New Mac, I attached the USB drive to the New Mac and began the setup.
At the step "Transfer Information to this Mac", the Mac just gives me a nice spinning icon next to "Looking for source...".  Apparently it cannot find the USB drive.
How do I fix this?  I don't want to setup a new user on the New Mac, I want to migrate my old users from the Old Mac.

See if you can inherit the backup.
    Inherit a Backup
    Inherit a Backup (2)
Another option would be to clone your old Mac and copy the clone. That would leave your old Mac with a backup and you can start a new one with the new Mac.
Clone  - Carbon Copy Cloner          (Often recommended as it has more features than some others)
    Clone – Data Backup
    Clone – Deja Vu
    Clone  - SuperDuper
    Clone - Synk
Clone Software – 6 Applications Tested

  • What is the best way to transfer information from a mac to a pc?

I need to get documents and photos off from my mac to transfer to my work pc.  They were originally pc files, but I recently purchased a mac and transfered them all to my mac.  Then my pc crashed and had to be wiped clean, so now I need to transfer some of them back to my pc.  I have them all on an external hard drive that I am using with time machine, but when I plug it into my pc it is no longer recognized and I can't even get into the files.  (I think it is partitioned for mac now)  Any help or suggestions?

On the Mac, open the Migration Assistant located in the Utilities folder. To do this: In Finder, select Go > Utilities or press Shift–Command–U (⇧⌘U), then double-click Migration Assistant.
Select the "From another Mac, PC, Time Machine backup, or other disk" option then click "Continue".
When prompted, enter an administrator name and password.
Select the "From another Mac or PC" migration method then click "Continue" to proceed.
When prompted, click Continue to quit other applications. Other applications can't be open on the Mac during the migration process.
Select the PC, then wait for the PC to show the passcode displayed on the Mac.
On the PC, once you see the passcode displayed on the Mac, click "Continue" to proceed.
The Mac will then begin to inspect your computer and build a list of information to migrate.
Select the information you would like to migrate to the Mac, then click Continue to proceed.
On both the Windows PC and Mac you will see a progress bar, messaging of what is being migrated and estimated time remaining. Once completed, you can log into the user account created.
Note: At your first login, you will promoted to enter a new password for the user account. See this article about how to choose a good password.

  • Transfer Information From Another Mac - 10.6.7 to 10.6?

I have two MacBooks. MacBook A has Mac OS X 10.6.7 installed on it, whereas MacBook B I've put a new hard drive into, and I'm going to reinstall Snow Leopard from DVD, taking it back to 10.6.0.
My question is, if I use the "Do You Already Own a Mac?" part of the Snow Leopard installation, will I hit a problem migrating the data from a 10.6.7 Mac, over to a 10.6.0 Mac?
Ideally I'd like MacBook B to be on the latest version of Snow Leopard (10.6.7) before I migrate any data over to it. How do I do this?

Install your 10.6 system, using Setup Assistant from the installer to transfer all your stuff. This will give you a clean system with no permissions problems. Updating first and then using MA will very likely give you two accounts and a load of permissions issues.
Then download the 10.6.7 combo updater;  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1361 and update.

  • Quick question about backing up my Mac

I recently switched over to a Mac for school and I am loving it so far. However, I noticed there is no real "Back-Up" function. However, while browsing through my preferences one day, I came across Time Machine. Does it work similar to backing up on a Windows PC? All I want it to plug in my external HD and to back up like every month or so, so that I can restore my PC to the previous settings if something goes wrong. Just something similar to a "system restore".
Will Time Machine do that for me? It seems like more of something that you would keep your hard drive plugged in forever and it would just back up every once in a while, but I don't want to have it plugged in all the time.
Also, this is kind of off topic, but is there anything similar to CCleaner for a Mac? Thanks!

    Hi there
Yes, Time Machine will create a full system backup of your Mac that is restorable.
Time Machine is made to backup:
Hourly for the past 24 hours
    Daily for the past month
    Weekly for the previous months
Older backups are deleted when the backup volume becomes full.
If you would prefer to do only monthly backups then you may do so, however, Time Machine may produce an error from time to time, saying that it was unable to complete the backup.
And in answer to your other question, there is an app called CleanMyMac, or there is an AppleScript/Automator App called Maintainence 3.8 (there are many others though)

  • Quick question - shortcut to turn off mac when completely frozen?

I'm not talking about force quiting - I mean when everything is jammed and the only option is to turn the power off. I'm sure there is a shortcut for this - similar to the one for the pram reset something like applealt+pr but different letters?

    Roger Wilmut1 wrote:
...your only recourse is usually a forced shutdown by holding the power button.
After which you should really restart from the install disk and run a Disk Repair from Disk Utility: every time I get a freeze I do this (in fact I run Applejack which is quicker) and it almost always shows up some error which needs repairing.
yes, that's a very good point.

  • I can not transfer information from my Mac Mini  to my iPhone five

Re syncing  calendar from Mac Mini to iPhone 5:   If I enter an event on my Mac Mini Calendar it does not transfer to my iPhone.  It works fine from my iPhone to my Mac Mini.  My i phone is using iOS 7.1.2.  My Mini's op sys is 10.9.4.  I have tried changing the settings on my phone, in my iCloud account and on my Mini.  I've become a bit confused.  Can you tell me what is wrong and how to fix it.  Chuckle, or tell me it can't be done.  Thanks, Bill Page

  • Quick question - which group owns this file? -rw-r--r--@ 1 admin -  Daemon?

As per subject line. if i type "id 1" in terminal the uid is daemon - meaning admin is the group - is this correct? If it is - why is one part of the result a uid and one a name? Why the @?
    -rw-r--r--@ 1 admin 1656
(It's a script by the way)

It's hard to say since it looks like the line was typed in (as opposed to copied and pasted), and the line doesn't appear to be complete (I'm assuming it's the output of 'ls -l').
But actually, going by position, the "1" is the number of links - and since your system has a user with 'uid=1' configured ('daemon'), then ls -l should list the name rather than the number, so the "1" probably is the number of links rather than the "owner".
Then that would make the file's owner "admin" (which is very odd - try 'id admin'), and the group an undefined numerical value, representing the 'gid=1656'. Or else it's the size and a column is missing from the post.
The "@" means the file has extended attributes (see the 'man" page for 'ls'). You can also try 'ls -l@ filename' or 'xattr -l filename'

  • CDP quick question

    Hi quick question,
    Scenario looks like this:
    ASR1k --- ASR9k -- ASR9k --- ASR1k
The connection between ASR1ks are l2transport on the ASR9k side. Therefore we see the ASR1k as a CDP neighbor from the other ASR1k. This is fine, but my question is why we also see the ASR9k as a CDP neighbor from the ASR1k via the same port. I thought CDP should either be tunnelled or not.
So, CDP on the ASR1ks show both the other ASR1k (which is fine), but it also show the directly connected ASR9k via the same interface. Is this normal?
    Thanks,
    Federico.

Adam, thanks for taking care of this and you are correct.
We made a change, based on popular demand to peel out certain control traffic out of the untagged EFP in the existence of MST/CDP configuration.
If the service is not configured locally on the l2tranporting interface then those packets are subject to the EFP transport.
    cheers!

  • I recently used SuperDuper! to transfer my hard drive, setting etc to an SSD to replace in my MBP.  When I placed the SSD in and went to "About This Mac" I came upon this in the Storage section.  My question is where can I find my Backups and delete them?

I recently used SuperDuper! to transfer my old MBP hard drive and its settings to a new SSD.  Everything went smoothly.  When I opened the "About this Mac" section and looked under Storage it showed this:
Where are the "Backups" (purple) located? I want to delete these files to free up disk space on my new SSD.  Thanks in advance for all of your guys help!

These are the "Local Snapshots" Time Machine makes when the actual Time Machine harddisk is not connected/avaiable.

If you have Lion and wireless you can use Airdrop to copy files back and forth. (You don't need an internet connection, just two reasonably recent Lion machines with WiFi cards.)
Can I use AirDrop with my computer?

  • Question: I want to update to the new LION OSX, but it says that I need to at least have an Intel Core 2 Duo. When I click "about this Mac," it says that I have a 2.16 Intel Core Duo. Is there a difference between the "Core 2 Duo" and the "Core Duo"?

Well, my title basically asks the question that I am seeking an answer for. Im not sure what year my MB Pro is, and I cant exactly find it on the Apple site. Its a 2.16 Intel Core Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. All I see (dating back to 2007,) is Intel Core 2 Duo on the apple site. Im pretty sure (but not 100% positive,) that my MB Pro is a late 2008/early 2009. Just trying to figure out if I can install LION OSX or not, since it requires atleast intel core 2 duo, and mine says I only have the intel core duo. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Core Duo is 32 bit processor and Core 2 Duo is 64 bit processor
OS X Lion, will only on 64 bit Intel processor Mac's.
The following Mac's that have 32 bit Intel “Yonah” processorsthat won't run OS X Lion.
    iMac 4,1 Early (Jan-Sept) 2006 17"
    iMac 4,1 Early (Jan-Sept) 2006 20"
    iMac 4,2 Mid (July-Sept) 2006 17"
    Mac Mini 1,1 (Feb-Sept) Early 2006
    Mac Mini 1,1 (Sept-Aug) Late 2006
    MacBook 1,1 13" (May-Nov 2006)
    MacBook Pro 1,1 15" A1150 (Jan-May 2006)
    MacBook Pro 1,2 17" A1151 (Aprl-Oct 2006)
    MacBook Pro 1,1 15" A1175 (May-Oct 2006)
There is a difference between “Intel Core Duo” and “IntelCore 2 Duo” processors.
