Quick question....What If I Delete Original Photos???

Hi, quick question...
I created a folder on my desktop and put some photos in it. I then imported these photos into iPhoto to make an album. Now, does this mean I can delete the original folder on my desktop? Or, if I do this will the photos in my iPhoto album not display?
Hope this makes sense, thanks for any advice!
Regards.

I created a folder on my desktop and put some photos in it. I then imported these photos into iPhoto to make an album. Now, does this mean I can delete the original folder on my desktop? Or, if I do this will the photos in my iPhoto album not display?
IF you are using the default and strongly recommended managed library (the iPhoto advanced preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" is checked) then you can delete the photos form the source (disk or camera) after they are imported and you have verified that they are safely in iPhoto - It is also recommended that you never let iPhoto delete photos form the camera but after properly disconnecting the camera and verifying the import you use the camera format command to delete them
If you have a referenced library (the above mentioned preference has been unchecked) then you can not delete the photos - in fact even moving them can be problematic

  • What happens to the original photo after editing?  Does it get replaced by the edited photo?

I just bought my first iPhone(5).  On Android, when editing a photo, the original stays in your gallery and the edited photo gets placed right next to it.  So what I want to know is, When editing a photo in the photo app, what happens to the original since it would be nice to be able to make different edits of it.

That is an excellent question. This is definitely not the programmed behavior of Photoshop Elements. Normally, when you edit a file, a new copy of the file is created (the original is simply left alone). This new copy of the file will have "_edited-1" added to the end of the name. It should definitely not be adding $ to the name at all.
Just as a test, create a new user account on your computer, and try editing another image to see if does the same thing there. However, I suspect there is another application on your computer that is modifying how files are saved, deleted, and renamed.

  • How do I download and immediately delete original photos from iCloud photos?

How do I download and immediately delete all original photos from iCloud photos? This way, I have a local copy of all my iPhone photos, and my iPhone and iCloud space will be reset and empty.
Using the online iCloud web app, you can only select one photo at a time. There is no select all or download all. And when you try to select one by one multiple photos and download, it opens a download "save-as" window for each one! Not one download window for all the selected. So if you select one hundred photos, one hundred download "save-as" windows will pop up, and you have to click the save button one hundred times.
Using my Windows 7 PC, the iCloud app doesn't have iCloud photo sync, only the Photo Stream photos, which is separate.
After researching online, they said the Apple OS X Yosemite Photos app could do this. So I tried my wife's MacBook Pro, and there is a iCloud photo sync, BUT, it tries to merge with her local photos. My 20 GB iCloud is full with my iPhone pictures, and her local photo library is about 50 GB. So it doesn't not even merge or allow the iCloud photo sync to turn on without buying more storage! The Apple OS X Yosemite Photos app doesn't even have a download only feature, OR access the iCloud like a folder to drag and drop photos or like an FTP. WHAT THE?!?!
So there IS ABSOLUTELY NO OPTION SO FAR to download and remove immediately all photos in the iCloud photo storage with ANY device, unless maybe I delete all my wife's photos on her MacBook Pro, which is not an option. Or select one by one thousands of photos on the online web app.
Am I missing something? or is Apple not so user friendly as they seem to be?

    Open iphoto.  Connect camera.
    Import photos.
    Does that not work?

  • HT201317 What if you deleted your photos in photo stream? Is it gone forever?

I didn't back up anything & my photos in photo stream got deleted as well! Does that mean i cant get anything back?

    Hi Maliakolo,
In order to get into your Photo Stream, the photos had to have been taken with an iDevice. Whichever device took the original photos will have a Camera Roll folder in the Photos app. Unless you deleted the pictures from your Camera Roll, they will still be there.

  • Reducing library size by deleting original photos

To save hard drive space, I have used the following method to get rid of unwanted originals:
    1. crop a photo
    2. export it
    3. delete the original (command/delete)
    4. import the cropped photo
    5. delete trash
I've discovered that the cropped photo is often significantly smaller than the original (a 3mb file might be reduced to 300kb for instance, depending on the chosen quality).
    Two questions:
    1. Anyone know a better or easier way to do this?
    2. How come I discover that some of the deleted originals are still in the library? (They do not appear in iPhoto but when I view the package contents, I see that many are still there thus defeating the whole purpose of doing this!)

    For feature Requests:
IPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback
But it's worth noting that Apple have had 7 iterations of iPhoto and never changed this way of working. Might make you think.
    First off -
I disagree with some people here that being forced to save such "originals" is such a necessary blessing forever and for all users.
You are not being ”forced“ to do anything. You have multiple choices all over the place. The most basic is that you can always use another application that works the way you want it to. Claiming that iPhoto ”forces“ you to protect the original is like complaining that Excel ”forces“ you to work in Spreadsheet Cells.
IPhoto is a Digital Asset Manager. It is designed to work on the best principles of DAM and always treats the original file as a film photographer treats the negative. If you do not want this feature, why on earth are you using a DAM?
Next off: Learn how to use iPhoto:
For those who prefer editing in Photoshop but the photo library management in iPhoto, I did notice that when you drag an iPhoto picture to the Photoshop icon, edit and save it, iPhoto does not realize that the image is modified and that prevents the duplicated data. Note, however, that this also means iPhoto's previews in smaller sizes show the original image (e.g. dull sky that you may have brightened in Photoshop) and the item info attributes, including size, dimensions, etc. are also as embedded in the iPhoto library when the photo was first imported.
That is not how you use iPhoto and Photoshop together.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Apple giving us the ability "Revert to Original" is a great tool - especially so newbies do not to damage or destroy precious photos. But, Apple should consider that over time people become power users and should be treated as adults who should have the facility to delete such wasted, unneeded originals which will never be seen again.
Love the disparaging reference to ”newbies“. Every professional I know always keeps the original file. Every single one.
The first thing an Adult might do is consider that a Spanner is not an appropriate tool for putting in a screw and go and get a screw driver. How ”adult“ would it be to persist in trying to insert the screw with the spanner and complain about it?
I'm not sure just what a ”power user“ is, but it wouldn't the definition include being able to distinguish between a Digital Asset Manager and a Photo Viewer? Or knowing how to use the app with an external editor? It's worth noting that all the professIonal apps - Lightroom, Aperture etc. - are DAM apps too. They all work to preserve your original. Must be something that ”power users“ want a lot.
So, I too use the method you use. Edit, export, reimport (if I am not in the mood to do Photoshop editing). Kind of silly to have to do these extra steps to get rid of useless files when on an OS that is all about convenience and user friendliness.
Kind of silly to be disabling one of the apps key features - non destructive editing - and making a whole lot of work for yourself when you could do what an adult ”power user“ would do: find an app that works the way you want.
IPhoto Diet trashed a whole lot of Libraries. Go back a few years and search the v5 and v6 forums.
Finally, if you are worried about disk space then simply run the Library from an external drive - and Apple don;t make those.

  • How to delete original photo's that have been retouched?

For Ex: I'll have 8 similar picture's of my ferret's that I have retouched in order to look better--but how do I delete the original 7 that I don't need anymore? And this goes for practically my entire library--I have about 1000 photos with about 8000 similar duplicates--that I don't need.
How do I get rid of these . . . and I've tried iPhoto Diet--and (I might be using it wrong or something but) it doesn't delete more than 3 or 4 photos after about 30 mins. and like I stated above I need to get rid of about 7000 more photos.
I've tried going thru each and everyone deciding if it was the better "retouched" photo but it takes light years to go thru my entire library.
    Any easier way?
    Thanks!
    --Dave

    Ok, let's try:
In the finder sidebar, you should have the different Music, Applications, Pictures Icons. In Pictures there should be one folder called iPhoto Library.
I set up a Smart Folder (in Finder > File > New Smart Folder), searching for the term 'original' within my Pictures folder.
This folder should show you all the Originals folders within the iPhoto Library.
Clicking on List View (Apple-2), you can sort your Originals folders (well, at least the search results) by Date, if you know you edited some pictures today or yesterday, or by size, finding the most edited pics from one day.
Clicking on each of these Originals folders will reveal the original, unedited pics (which you probably wanna throw in the bin, if you don't need them), as well as the MPG movies which some digital cameras can make. So be careful with throwing away the whole folders before checking the contents.
If I really want to keep an original shot, say if I do some major colour change in Photoshop for example, then I usually duplicate the photo within iPhoto. This way I can edit one, and still keep the second, both visible within iPhoto, without having to worry were the 'invisible' Original is.
I hope this makes things clearer. Let me know, if it helps.
    stefan.

  • Quick Question: What to import for SimpleList

Hi all, I am trying to use the SimpleList class but I get this error: "SimpleList cannot be resolved to a type". I cannot fine SimpleList on Sun's class documentation site. • Quick question: what is the difference between graphic and movie clips?

What is the difference between the two symbols: graphic and movie clips? They both contain frames..?

    movie clips can have
instance names : so they can be controlled via actionscript
filters applied : drop shadow, glow, blur, color adjust etc
blend modes applied : difference, screen, lighten, darken, etc.
    3d transformations
    graphics:
    none of the above
the only real practical reason to use a graphic is the reason jdehaan stated. a graphics internal animation can be scrubbed via the main timeline. graphics will only advance when the main timeline advances. when the main timeline stops.. graphics stops.
movieclips on the otherhand are said to run independent of the main timeline. so you can have a MAIN timeline with one frame only and the movieclip's interior animation will run constantly.
also via the properties panel you can tell a graphic to stay stuck on a certain frame or loop a set number of times.
always use movieclips unless you have a reason not too. as kglad said it will save you and others a lot of hurt in the future.

  • Quick question: What is "WDS"?

What does it mean? I keep seeing the term but not sure what it is. Thanks.

WDS stands for "Wireless Distribution Service" and is a technology used by some wireless routers to connect routers together in a network wirelessly.
If your router does not support WDS then it cannot connect wirelessly to another router, even if it itself is a wireless router.
i.e. a Netgear DG834G is a wireless router/modem and can wirelessly connect with wireless clients such as laptops and desktop computers that have a wireless adapter. It cannot however connect wirelessly to an Airport Extreme N wirelessly as the Netgear doesn't support WDS, the only way to connect the routers is with a physical ethernet cable running between the two, not always possible or desirable in the home!
    Hope that helps, Grumpy.

  • Original photos disappear when exporting retouched photos from iPhoto

    BACKGROUND:
I have a folder of, say, 15 photos.
I open them in iPhoto and retouch them.
I export the photos and IMMEDIATELY am confronted with the message that they can't be exported because the originals cannot be found.
I go to the original folder of 15 photos and it is completely empty.
The missing photos aren't in the Trash, they are no-where. A search finds NOTHING but the ones in iPhoto.
If I try to copy the photos in iPhoto and paste them into the original folder from which they came, they create ALIASes and the picture doesn't show up ... just a JPEG icon.
If I export photos one at a time, the originals don't disappear, but if I try to export even two in the same procedure, all original photos disappear.
Obviously, this is AWFUL because my photos are gone, vanished, nowhere to be found.
    What's wrong with my machine?
(I don't even know what version of iPhoto I'm using ... how do I find that information?)

    TO LARRYHN
"Please describe your work flow in some detail ..." (brace yourself)
    =====
IN A NUTSHELL: Whenever exporting anything from iPhoto, the original photos in Finder VANISH. Poof! They're gone. Thus, I disagree with your and Terence Devlin's comment that  "iPhoto has no ability to manipulate files stored outside the iPhoto Library." My uninformed guess is that I need to re-install my OS or at least iPhoto.
BACKGROUND: Yes, I held down the Option key when launching iPhoto and chose CREATE LIBRARY from the resulting menu. Ever since doing that, the problem is the same EXCEPT that iPhoto now hangs virtually EVERY TIME I try to export. AFTER deleting the original files, of course
    =====
INITIAL STEPS LEADING UP TO THE EXPORT PROCESS:
    (1) From my camera, I import photos into a Desktop folder. Let's say, for this example, there are five photos (test1.jpg, test2.jpg, test3.jpg, test4.jpg and test5.jpg).
    (2) I open them in PREVIEW, manipulate them (some need to be rotated). I save all changes.
    (3) I need to remove some blemishes (hey, I'm not perfect). I select all 5 photos, CONTROL+CLICK and choose OPEN WITH ... iPhoto.
    (4) iPhoto opens, and test1.jpg, test2.jpg, test3.jpg, test4.jpg and test5.jpg are in a new UNTITLED EVENT.
    (5) As confirmation, I open Finder, navigate to the Desktop folder and confirm that the five original photos are still present.
Now here's where things go awry and I'll outline everything I've done:
NOTE: For all of these examples, I am not going to spend time to EDIT the photos in iPhoto. I am simply leaving the 5 photos I just imported untouched in an UNTITLED EVENT. (If I edit them, the results are the same, so I'm not going to waste my time.)
EXAMPLE ONE: EXPORTING ONE PHOTO AT A TIME
    (6) I select test1.jpg (from UNTITLED EVENT) and choose FILE/EXPORT.
    (7) The EXPORT PHOTO screen appears, and, without making any changes to the default settings (Kind: Current,  Jpeg Quality: Medium, etc.), I select EXPORT.
    (8) A screen appears: ALERT - The photo test1.jpg could not be opened because the original cannot be found."
    (9) I choose FIND PHOTO and navigate to the original desktop folder containing the original 5 photos. I confirm that test1.jpg is there.
    (10) I choose OK.
    (11) The EXPORT PHOTOS screen appears reading, "test1.jpg already exists. Do you want to replace it?"
    (12) I select REPLACE and a screen appears "Exporting ... 1 of 1" and IMMEDIATELY another screen appears in front of that reading, "ALERT - The photo test1.jpg could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found." (You will recall that just seconds ago, it was definitely there!)
    (13) I choose FIND PHOTO ... and iPhoto hangs and must be shut down using FORCE QUIT.
    (14) Just for grins & giggles, I check the Desktop folder to be sure test1.jpg is still there ... and it is.
EXAMPLE TWO: EXPORTING ONE PHOTO AT A TIME (and hopefully doing so w/o iPhoto hanging)
    (6) In iPhoto, I select test1.jpg (from UNTITLED EVENT) and choose FILE/EXPORT.
I confirm that test1.jpg is present.
    (10) I click on OK.
    (11) The EXPORT PHOTOS screen appears reading, "test1.jpg already exists. Do you want to replace it?"
    (12) I select REPLACE and a screen appears "Exporting ... 1 of 1" and IMMEDIATELY another screen appears in front of that reading, "ALERT - The photo test1.jpg could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found." (You will recall that just seconds ago, it was SO present that iPhoto confirmed I wanted to replace it!)
    (13) I choose FIND PHOTO and navigate to the Desktop folder and, sure enough, there is no test1.jpg. One second ago, it was there but as soon as I chose REPLACE from iPhoto, it disappeared. I mean it's gone. It's not in the trash, it's not in the folder. It has vanished. Only test2.jpg through test5.jpg remain.
EXAMPLE THREE: EXPORTING ALL 5 PHOTOS AT ONCE
(I recreate the Desktop folder so it once again contains five photos ... test1.jpg through test5.jpg)
    (6) In iPhoto, I select all 5 photos (test1.jpg, test2.jpg, test3.jpg, test4.jpg and test5.jpg ... from UNTITLED EVENT) and choose FILE/EXPORT.
    (7) The EXPORT PHOTO screen appears, and, without making any changes to the default settings (Kind: Current,  Jpeg Quality: Medium, etc.), I select EXPORT.
NOTE: In this example, iPhoto voluntarily navigated to the original Desktop folder ... it didn't make me search for the photos.
    (8) A screen appears: FILES EXIST - test1.jpg and 4 other files already exist at the destination. Do you want to replace them?
    (9) I select REPLACE and a screen appears "Exporting ... Exporting Image 1 of 5 and IMMEDIATELY another screen appears in front of that reading, "Alert, The photo test1.jpg could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."
    (10) I select FIND PHOTO and navigate to the Desktop folder and the folder is complete empty. All 5 photos have vanished.
    ====
QUESTION: Since all of my original photos have disappeared, how can I recreate them? I spent a month through-hiking the JMT this summer and you can imagine what a tragedy it was to find that virtually every one of my photos has disappeared and I have no way of replacing them. I can see them in iPhoto, but I can't bring them OUT of iPhoto and back into a Finder folder.)
    =====
AS AN ASIDE ... when I have to FORCE QUIT of iPhoto, I am given the opportunity to REPORT or IGNORE. If I choose REPORT, a screen appears reading that the transmission failed and that I should "try again later." This has been happening for quite some time. I cannot create a connection between my computer and Apple to report any problems.

  • Hallo ,why is it that when I delete a photo ,which is backed up by time machine and western digital external hard drive , that I am able to restore the photo okay but not the titles and descriptions . I have  a Macbook 4.1, mac osx 10.5.8 . Iphoto 7.1.5 ,

    QUESTION.
Hallo , my question is ;whenever I delete a photo and restore it through Time machine and Western digital external hard drive , I am able to restore the photo but not the titles and descriptions . Western Digital inform me that it isn't their external hard drive problem and suggest that it is an Apple software problem ?
    I am using  a Macbook 4.1 , with Mac OSX 10.5.8 . I photo 7.1.5 , last modifie4d 01/05/2010 -universal . Should I be upgrading  Iphoto ?
I hope that someone is able to help in this matter , as i have to restore 12000 photos !
    Thanking you in anticipation.
    Alan from Wigton

    Hallo  Kieth ,
I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles, descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .
Thanks for your interest and advice.
    regards  - Alan

  • When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder, what happens if I delete the photo in Iphoto ? Will the original file in the folder be deleted too?

When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder to iphoto, what happens if:
    1. I delete that photo in iphoto? will the original file in the folder be deleted too ?
    2.  when importing, does the hard disk store 2 versions of the photo, hence occupying additional space in the harddisk?

1 - no  --  iPhoto only manages fiel within the iPhoto library - it does not ever do anything with files outside the library
2 - No idea what you are asking - by default (and strongly recommended) iPhoto copies the original to the iPhoto library and you delete the source file outside the iPhoto library - iPhoto alwasy has at least two versions of every photo and some times three - it always have the original, a thumbnail and once a photo is modified a preview - this is not optional - if it is not what you want then iPhoto is not the correct progrtam to be using for phopto management

  • I have the original ipad. I can't delete my photos from the ipad, and the new itunes update does not give me the option to sync photos. What do I do?

I have the orignal ipad. I synced all my photos from my computer onto. Now I don't have enough storage on my ipad so I want to delete these photos. When I try from my ipad it only gives me the option to share or copy, NOT DELETE. I went to resync my ipad to itunes, after I downloaded the new version and now it doesn't give me an option to sync photos. How do I get rid of them?

    Wow.  That's weird.
Is your iPad jailbroke?  If it is, all bets are off.  If it is not jailbroke, keep reading.
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • What happened to the "Quickly view original photo" while editing in iPhoto?

I think it used to be "spacebar" or something in iPhoto 9, it quickly switched between the original photo and your current changes which was very useful.

    Hold the Shift key.

  • Hi I bought 2TB WD my passport for mac but I do not know what I can delete from the original macbook air. Thank you.

Hi I bought 2TB WD my passport for mac but I do not know what I can delete from the original macbook air. Thank you.

That depends on what you have on the MBA...if you have videos, move the videos to the external drive.  If you have a lot of music, create a folder/library for the music and point iTunes there for the music.  If you have a lot of photos for iPhoto, make a new library on the external drive and move our photos over there and then select that library as the default library for iPhoto to use.
Those are the big files and should take a lot of the load off the internal storage.
