Quick select cut/paste doesn't match 100%

I'm trying to cut out a selection using Quick Select (all refine edge settings off) and then paste into a new layer. However, I can't get a 100% pixel perfect alignment once I paste. Cut/Paste using the rectangle select does match 100%. The quick select tool should allow for 100% pixel perfect alignment, correct? Any pointers?
Thanks,
Dustin
This is before cutting (note middle circle)
This is after cut/paste and aligning

Ok thanks. But I'm not really having an issue with the selection, it is definitey selecting the pixels I want (and cutting them correctly). It is just that once pasted, it will never align perfectly, which makes the tool unusable for me. I just can't imagine that this is how the quick select tool is supposed to work. I just want it to cut pixels, and paste the same pixels, without modifying them in any way.

anyone knows why and how to fix it?

"Cut" is available when you have a part of a filename selected - it cuts the text from the filename as you expect.
I disagree with Apple's design decision here too - it's an annoyance, but you'll just have to live with it. Or use an alternative to the Finder - http://www.simplehelp.net/2006/10/08/10-os-x-finder-alternatives-compared-and-re viewed/

  • Can I resize a Quick Selected image so it fits when I cut and paste it on a different background.

Can I resize a Quick Selected image so it fits when I cut and paste it on a new background? I am trying to take a photo of someone and place it on a different background. The Quick Selected image is too big when I paste it on the background. You can only see a small portion of the persons head.

Open the photo, then go to Image>resize>image size. Read what the resolution is in px/in.
Get out of this screen. Then use one of the selection tools to select the person, go to Edit>copy to put it on the clipboard
Now, go to File>new>blank file. Enter width & height, and the same resolution value.
Go to Edit>paste. The person will be on a separate layer. Use the move tool to position, and, to resize with the corner handles, if necessary
Note: For printing, it is desirable to have the resolution in the 240-300px/in range. For web work, 72 px/in is ok

  • Quick selection tool doesn't snap to to the nearest area. Working more like a lasso tool and the add layer button doesn't seem to creat the cutout that it should.

Quick selection tool in elements 13 doesn't snap to the nearest border area of the photo. Works more like a lasso. Also the add layer button when clicked on only brings up a black layer, not a black mask with a hole where I just cut.

Which OS are you working on?
Please try resetting your tools from Photo Bin flyout menu.
    1. Open Photo bin.
    2. Click on Fly Out menu
    3. Click on option Reset all Tools
    4. Relaunch Editor13
    and see if it helps.

  • Quick Selection Tool doesn't work

This has probably been addressed, but can't seem to find it.  It's driving me nuts.
In Elements 6.0,  I have found the Quick Selection Tool quite useful.  However, I often find that it does not work; not creating an outlined selection.
Have others found this?  Do I have some setting incorrect?  Is this an Adobe bug?  I have reverted to all default settings, but no dice.
    Thanks!

Ya, I can't make it work. I've watched a million videos online with people that seem to think it's amazing, but I have spent HOURS trying to cut out a simple image that would have taken me ten seconds on my ancient CS2. After owning this new product for two months I am still opening up my old version of Photoshop to extract images. Every time I start outlining something, the Quick Selection Tool goes all over the place, and when I do finally get it somewhat close to outlining what I want, I can't figure out how to save what I want. Lame.

  • Quick selection tool doesn't "snap" to edges. It works more like the lasso tool.

When I try to make a quick selection it doesn't snap to the edges of the objects or the edge of the image.

My apologies - I "drilled down" the Adobe site through CC > Photoshop so I thought that information was picked up. I have found the solution in the meantime - I has set the brush size to very small - so I will mark this as complete.
Thanks for your guidance for future enquiries.

  • How to copy and paste into the same picture using quick selection tool

I have Photoshop CS5 and am new at this.  What I need to do is copy and paste something in the image back into the same image.  I can select it with the quick selection tool.  All I want to do is paste a copy of it back into my image, move it and rotate it a little.
I've searched for an answer for a couple of days now and evidently, I'm searching for the wrong thing.  This is what I need to do and I don't know how to get there.  I do this in Digital Image Suite all the time and it's very simple.  I know Photoshop is a lot more complicated but you can do more with it so I am trying to switch by using it to work on my projects.  I've read articles where people say to use the quick selection tool and do a copy and paste but for me, all it does is add blank layer and the selection disappears.  If I paste again, it pastes the item in the middle of the image and I can't move it or change it in any way.
One more question:  in the Filters menu, all of the filters are gray-shaded.  I read that I have to buy these filters, is that true?
Thank you for your help.  If there is a beginner's forum where you would rather I post my questions, please let me know.

Once you have a selection, I use Ctrl C to copy and Ctrl V to paste.  This will add a layer but may not look like it as it is in exactly the same spot in picture.  If you paste again it will show up near middle of picture.
If you want to resize and rotate use Ctrl T.
More options are in Edit/Transform.  I particularly like Warp.
All the filters should be active, but many only work in 8 bit RGB mode.  To see what mode they are in click Image/Mode.

  • I would like cut out an object using the quick select tool and drop the object into another picture. Can anyone help

I am using background pictures and want to cut out objects from other jpegs using the quick select tool and drop them into the background picture. So if i have a banana and select the object i need to copy the banana into the other background.
    Hope this makes sense.
    Gary

Select banana. Right click>layer via copy. Move tool. Click and drag to other file. Drop on image.
OR: load the background and banana in one stack (File>Scripts>Load File Into Stack). Select banana and layer via copy or create layer mask.

  • Quick select tool doesn't work in photoshop CS5 extended

I can't get the quick selection tool to work in CS5 it does in CS4 does anyone have an answer for this?

I can capture the image in CS4 and wallah the back ground is gone...here in CS5 I have to had draw it (which I did just rapidly for this example) then I go to refine edge get the black screen with white outlines...or using the background screen image I just get the blank background with a light outline of the image ...????

  • Quick Selection tool in CS5 doesn't select everything

I hope I am posting in the correct place.  If not, please tell me where to post my question, thanks.
I am using the quick selection tool to select my image.  When I click on 'Refine Edge' it looks great.  When I output to a new layer or new document, etc., parts of the image are missing.
For example, I have an image of two girls (attached).  When I click 'Refine Edge,' it looks just the way I want.  But if I choose to put it into a new document or new layer, the red-haired girl's hands and legs disappear.  This isn't the first time this has happened - I just finally got frustrated enough to ask for help.  Thanks and let me know what I am doing wrong.
(The first is B&W in 'refine edge', the second is Overlay view in 'refine edge', and the last one is the results (with disappearing hands and legs)

I assumed it wouldn’t help based on other comments.  Using Mac OS X 10.9.3, ID CSS 6 version 8.
I just logged out and then logged in and the problem cleared up but did the same thing before and it cleared up and then came back.  Any ideas why this is intermittent?
    Thanks.

  • Quick Selection Tool Doesn't Use Shift in the Expected Manner

Generally speaking, if you click somewhere with a tool that you stroke on an image, then hold the Shift key down and click somewhere else, the tool will be stroked in a straight line from the prior point to the current point.  This is very handy under certain conditions.
However, I was just using the Quick Selection Tool to select the shadow of a microphone, and lo and behold an attempt to drag it along a straight line by holding down the Shift key did nothing.
It would be nice if this tool would work like all the others, and stroke a line between where it was and where it's currently being clicked if the Shift key is held down.
    -Noel

I guess I can see the conflict (Shift to add vs. Shift to stroke), but honestly I have learned to use the Quick Selection tool with the default "press nothing and it adds, press Alt and it subtracts" setting, and just never found a use for the mode change.
If you're curious about what I was trying to select, it was the microphone stand shadow on a white suit...  And to be fair it was just a little more elbow grease to get the job done without the shift stroke capability.

  • Quick Selection, sharpness possible

    Hi,
I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS3, is it possible to have sharp selection using quick selection tool.
I'm doing cut outs for feature pages and I use pen tool often  which give sharp edges, but is the same possible with Quick Selection ?

That you're asking this question implies you may not have a solid understanding of path vs. pixel (raster) selection and masking operations.  Given that it's hard to judge that, it becomes a bit difficult to answer your question well.
Perhaps if you describe more about what you're currently doing an answer will become more clear.  Are you making paths with the pen, then turning them into selections, then copying image data using those selections and pasting it into another document?
As an attempt at a general answer:  The quick selection tool by itself doesn't make generally sharp, straight, clean edges and kind of expects you to do edge refinement on its selection to make a mask.  Note, for example, the [Refine Edge] button available when the quick selection tool is active.  Given this knowledge, it's possible you could do something like this:
    1.  Quick Selection tool to generally isolate your subject from the background.
    2.  Click the Refine Edge button.
    3.  Adjust Contrast and Smoothness to isolate the subject with sharp, clean edges.
There is incredible power in the Refine Edge function, and it's well worth looking into further.
There's a decent Russell Brown video tutorial on masking and refining edges here:

    Hope this helps!

  • Cut/Paste from Word to Illustrator CS3 for Mac suddenly not working

This issue regards Illustrator CS3 for Mac on a Mac Pro with 6 GB.
Exactly one week ago I created a number of Illustrator files by cutting charts from a Word 2008 document and pasting them into an Illustrator document.
In the past I have dragged the images (or clip art) or simply used Control-C or even Control-X, but by whatever method I opted for, getting the image from Word to Illustrator CS3 has not been a problem.
Yesterday I got a new chart and a request to replace an old image - one that I had created last week on Tuesday by the Drag/Drop or Cut/Paste method.   For reasons I can't begin to imagine the process simply won't work now.
I also find that if I simply select text in a Word Document, hit Ctrl-C and then try a Ctrl-V in Illustrator I don't get to see my text pasted in - ONLY if I already have a text block open and the cursor in place will I get to see the text copied over into Illustrator.  This is very strange and not at all how things have worked in the past - typically I would see the new Text Object just appear, and then I could move it to wherever I wanted.
I have opened up a number of old files that I know were created with copied text and also opened the associated Word files (earlier versions of Word) and again find that I can't copy text over, or even move images over - even though I clearly could do this before.  I have also tried entirely new files - also with no success.
I was at an Apple one-to-one session this morning and they were more than mystified by this.  I can Cut and Paste into Adobe Photoshop Elements, but I can't even cut and paste from Adobe Photoshop Elements into Illustrator CS3.   I can drag the Photoshop file (from the Finder window) into the Illustrator document and poof - get my image that way, but it's as an image only.  If the base image in question is a vector image or something else having a plurality of elements, I can't then select the elements in Illustrator to change their color, delete them, or otherwise play with them.
I have brought up a word document on another Mac system that also has Illustrator CS3 and find that it too can't drag/drop cut/paste between the two applications.   At Apple, we did confirm that such ability is operational in the new Illustrator CS4, but none of their store systems still have CS3 to provide yet a third system to test.
I have deleted my Illustrator CS3 preferences, tried flushing the p-ram, and of course run fix and repair permissions - no dice.
My Mac systems update daily and there is nothing in the main update log that shows anything for Adobe or Office (nor do I think there should be).  Adobe Update reports that everything is up to date, and I don't see a history file to know what might have changed in the last week.   Office also reports fully up to date and happy.
As I can cut and paste the images into an email for Mail and into Photoshop, I am fairly certain that it is NOT a Microsoft Office 2008 issue.  The fact that another Mac with Illustrator CS3 also can't cut and paste suggests that is is really not something personal to my main system.
It is almost as if this is some clandestine "update" intended to encourage me to buy Illustrator CS4.  Given that I bought Illustrator CS3 less than a year ago, I really am not eager to buy the new version.   The greeting on the Adobe Support page that CS3 is no longer the current version and therefore supported was most annoying.
I am really hoping that someone out there has an idea of what to try changing, removing and/or adjusting with respect to Adobe Illustrator CS3.

I tried the Select by Path option - can't believe I missed it - and found it made no difference.
I actually uninstalled and reinstalled the whole app.  When I tried to simply re-install (can't remember it's exact phrase) it got part way through and then demanded another disk - but I only have one DVD with the application - the extra DVD is for tutorials and it didn't accept that one either.  So I restarted that process and chose to completely uninstall.  Then reinstalled - hey with only my one disk - gee, just like the first time.   And then it seemed to work.
I was not aware of the save as PDF option - but yes I have Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 for Mac so that option is there - and it seems to work too.
There were of course a slue of updates, and I let them all proceed - but even with them all in place the system is fine and I can once again drag and drop / cut and paste things back and forth.   I just tried a text block and "The Quick Brown Fox" pasted in with a clipping mask about 10 times the size of the document, but other than that it was ok.
So I have things working again on my primary system.   Will try and figure out what's wrong with the other one - but a reinstall might be the easiest game there too.
