Quick Selection Tool Default Settings

Does anyone know what the default settings are for "hardness" and "spacing" on the brush dropdown for the quick selection tool in PE 10? Much appreciation for any help.
-Andrew

When in doubt you can always use Reset Tool or Reset Tools from Window menu to reset the tool setting to default.

  • For elements 6 Using the Quick Select Tool- Best Settings

I would like to hear feedback on best setting using elements 6 for the Quick Select Tool- Trying to remove a background for a Product Image.
    Thanks!

Perhaps you could post your sample image here to get informed suggestions.
There are many ways to delete the backgrounds but they all depend on the type and complexity of the photo.
    Good luck.

  • Quick Selection Tool Problem - Cursor Stuck in Subtract

    Hey All,
I somehow caused the quick selection tool default to be "on always" in the subtraction (minus - ) position; I am able to access the add (plus +) position by using the shift key , but this causes some problems as those are not the defaults keys for this tool or program for that matter.
    Can anyone help?

Be sure the tool isn't set to subtract in the options bar. Otherwise, try resetting the tool by right- or control-clicking the blue arrow just to the right of the tool preset (under the blue PS icon in the below screenshot) to reset the tool.

  • Quick Selection Tool doesn't work

This has probably been addressed, but can't seem to find it.  It's driving me nuts.
In Elements 6.0,  I have found the Quick Selection Tool quite useful.  However, I often find that it does not work; not creating an outlined selection.
Have others found this?  Do I have some setting incorrect?  Is this an Adobe bug?  I have reverted to all default settings, but no dice.
    Thanks!

Ya, I can't make it work. I've watched a million videos online with people that seem to think it's amazing, but I have spent HOURS trying to cut out a simple image that would have taken me ten seconds on my ancient CS2. After owning this new product for two months I am still opening up my old version of Photoshop to extract images. Every time I start outlining something, the Quick Selection Tool goes all over the place, and when I do finally get it somewhat close to outlining what I want, I can't figure out how to save what I want. Lame.

  • Have selection tool defaults changed in Photoshop CC 2014?

I've just noticed this new behavior.  If I click on the Polygonal Lasso Tool Icon, it automatically flips over to the regular Lasso tool.  If I click on the Magic Wand icon, it flips over to the Quick Selection Tool. If I click and hold, I can get the tool I want, but if I go to another tool then back to the Polygon Lasso icon, it flips again.  If I click L, it works as it should, if the Polygon Lasso is visible in the Tool Bar.
Is this a bug, or a new default behavior?
    Thanks
Edit:  Upon further experimentation, this seems to be common with all the tools;  if you change to the non-default tool, it will flip back to the default tool if you click on it later.  I'm pretty sure this is new, because I used to leave certain tools activated, then click back on them as needed.  Since this appears to be a default, can it be turned off?

Could be.  I tried restarting, closing and reopening Photoshop.  I just noticed this today, and I've been using CC 2014 since it came out.  I'm using it on a relatively new iMac, but I don't think it has happened before, though I could be wrong.  It's not the end of the world, but it is an annoyance.
    Thanks.

  • Change the background with a bunch of kids? Quirky quick selection tool?

Main Objective:  How can I change the background behind a bunch of kids? My quick selection tool is quirky! Like the HS kids in the pic….
The 2nd photo is what I am looking to do.
When I try the quick selection tool, it's all wonky & quirky now.  I can't select little bits any more! It just basically takes the whole stinkin' page! What did I do?!  Are there defaults?
On watched video number 85 today, I tried to use my stylus and the bamboo pad. (Good grief; that's another story...it moves & I'm not even touching the pad; what's up with that?! Way too confusing, so I gave up!)
    Anyway..this is what I need.
What is easier for me to remove the background?  The kids?  Pretend I didn't say yes to help with this project?
All the video tutorials on how to remove backgrounds is always on a perfect object...not a real life mess of a class.  So... HELP!!!
    Please.
This is WAY over my head; but I'm trying. Really.
On a mac with CC membership.

You may find it easier to select the kids than the background. Instead of copying to new layer, create a mask, then you can add or remove as you like.
In the top tool bar click the icon in the middle to add to selection. Then use your option key to remove.
When you are nearing done, you can then refine the mask. If necessary you can use the other selection tool for straight lines, large areas etc. For tight places you may prefer to use the quick mask tool (lowercase q)
Take your time, you will get it. And like I said, using a mask will let you take a breather. It can help walking away for a bit.

  • ???quick selection tool in CS6 PS???

Suddenly, it's not possible to select two-color object with the quick selection tool in CS6 PS. Only the outline is selected. Forced to go into the brush tool and manually select the whole object, or select by color only which creates it's own problems. Magic wand will only select the interior of the object, or the outline only, not the entire object. Where are the settings to disable this unfortunate development?

Are you running a RGB image?
To reset tool have it selected and right click on icon in upper left corner.

  • Quick selection tool preference

My quick selection tool has reversed it's default position. Normally, when you open this tool, it's natural position is to add and you have to press alt ( on my pc ) to subtract. Mine is default subtract and you have to hit shift to add. Not a huge problem bit it's annoying. I've looked in preferences and can't see what I've done. It was okay until a couple of days ago ! Can anyone help ? I am using CS5 Windows 7.
    Regards,
    TL.

    Try re-setting the Tool:

Could you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels visible so we can see the Tool’s settings in the Options Bar and the selected Layer/s?

  • Photoshop CS6 - Quick Selection tool freezes Photoshop/ becomes unresponsive for minutes

After only two selections the tool becomes unresponsive for minutes.
I'm on a 2.6 Ghz retina MacBook Pro, 16 Gb RAM, and this in connection with an SSD should make this tool very good to use. Operating system: OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion", latest update.
Unfortunately, it seems to develop some kind of overload, during which you cannot use Photoshop at all. No commands like "undo selection", "quit", "close file" are accepted.
There is no beachball, no other signs that Photoshop is working on something.
Hint: it seems to happen when you option select (subtract from an existing selection).
Hint: the freeze can be shortened by a tool switch (has to be through clicking on a tool, keyboard commands are frozen as well)
Hint: the "subtract selection" move that caused the freeze appears after Photoshop comes back to life after a couple of minutes. The subtraction to the selection seems to be random, makes no sense, and is not the regular function of the tool.
First step after this freeze would be to undo the last selection, and continue working.
If you do several "add to selection" moves, they add up in a kind of waiting line. If you do the subtract from selection move, this doesn't work, and the freeze happens.
So far, I have not noticed the freeze when adding to a selection. Adding to a selection was always quick and instant. The bug must sit in the "subtract from selection" code.
On most freezes, the ants continue walking, I just had one (again with subtracting selection) where even the ants stopped walking.
I don't think it has anything to do with Photoshop working. I have used the quick selection tool regularly under CS5 on my old machine (which was a museum piece), and while I had to wait sometimes, it was never ground to a freeze/halt like the quick selection tool under CS6.

Did this work before, or has it always been this way?  Not a bug or everyone with your system would be complaining.  Have not seen that.
If it has always worked that way a reset of preferences will probably not do anything.
A reset of preferences will reset to factory defaults, so you will have to reset to saved workspace.
Do you have at least 10% free disk space?

  • Quick Selection Tool Doesn't Use Shift in the Expected Manner

Generally speaking, if you click somewhere with a tool that you stroke on an image, then hold the Shift key down and click somewhere else, the tool will be stroked in a straight line from the prior point to the current point.  This is very handy under certain conditions.
However, I was just using the Quick Selection Tool to select the shadow of a microphone, and lo and behold an attempt to drag it along a straight line by holding down the Shift key did nothing.
It would be nice if this tool would work like all the others, and stroke a line between where it was and where it's currently being clicked if the Shift key is held down.
    -Noel

I guess I can see the conflict (Shift to add vs. Shift to stroke), but honestly I have learned to use the Quick Selection tool with the default "press nothing and it adds, press Alt and it subtracts" setting, and just never found a use for the mode change.
If you're curious about what I was trying to select, it was the microphone stand shadow on a white suit...  And to be fair it was just a little more elbow grease to get the job done without the shift stroke capability.

  • Quick Selection Tool won't deselect

I can't seem to deselect an area that mistakenly was selected. I pressed the Alt key but it won't deselect the area. Am I not doing something I should? Also where can I find some tutorials on using the Quick Selection tool. I am using CS5.

If you've just selected something, and it's not what you wanted, you can use Ctrl-Z to step back one step in the History (i.e., to before the selection was made), then try again with a different Tolerance setting or by clicking on a different point.
With the Quick Selection tool current, make sure you review the settings at the top of the Photoshop main window.  They affect how the tool will work:  A smaller Tolerance value will select fewer pixels, Anti-alias makes edges smoother, Contiguous will only select one block of contiguous pixels (vs. selecting similar pixels all over the image), and Sample All Layers will allow you to select based on what you see in the composite multi-layer document vs. just what's on a particular layer.

  • Quick selection tool not working correctly

I am trying to extract a portion of a photo...i tried using the selection tool to extract the portion on another picture, and it worked GREAT!
Now i'm trying to use it in another photo and the refine image tool isn't extracting it into a new layer like it did with the other one!
is there something that i may have clicked or turned off that is preventing me from making this extraction??

    Hello,
Could you be more specifc as to what you are doing here?
You mention using selections tools, including the Quick Selection tool, but these tools only create selections, they do not extract the material you have selected. A selection is like highlighting text in a word processor, after you have highlighted the text you can copy/paste it or modify it, but simply highlighting it doesn't do anything. Same with selections, once you have created a selection with a tool like Quick Selection you can how copy/paste it to a new image or perform adjustments to just that area.
I'm not sure what you mean by the "refine image tool", we don't have anything by that name. However, we do have a Refine Edge option that helps to make cleaner edges to your selection.

  • Magic Quick Selection Tool NOT working right. Help please?

We've used the magic quick selection tool lots and most of the time it works well.
It's very slow.............. v  e r y slow and I'm wondering if there's a patch to download from Adobe or
what to do to fix this.  We have pictures to edit and it's making the editing torture.  Please help?
    Thank you so much. tkccvalentine

It's the Quick Selection Tool in Photoshop Elements 9 and I'm trying to get the background and make it another layer so I can even out the color of the background then bring down the transparency.  Not sure if that makes sense.  I'm new to this....  Sometimes the area it will grab can go ...not fast.. but not slow.  Sometimes it's like it's just messed up and literally takes 30 seconds to process each move.  I rebooted my computer and re opened it and it helped a little.  It's not clear what causes it when it messes up and when it doesn't.  Just frustrating.  It's probably user error because I'm so new at Photoshop.   Thanks for your input.   I really appreciate it.
