Quick selection tool problem (CS5)

Everytime I use the Quick selection tool in CS5 I always seem to get a unsmooth edge and also white lines (please see photo attached below). When I use the pen tool I dont get this problem. Any ideas guys? thank you very much.

This is pretty normal. The Quick Selection tool is looking for borders between pixel values and, if they are not well defined, you get a fuzzy edge.
The pen tool puts clear vector lines where you draw them.

  • Quick  selection tool problem on windows via parallels on mac book pro

Of course I am new here.  I am going through lessons (Classroom in a book) and get to lesson 3 to the point of cropping the image, the quick select tool  works.  After cropping I get the message:  Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error..., This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.  Please contact ...  Is it called crashing if now Photoshop closes down?  Of course I googled the issue, cleaned my registry and read a multitude of opinions and advice, deciding to just work around the problem by 'saving as' at appropriate moments.  I have done that lesson now often enough to know it in my sleep, however I am proceeding with the next lessons.  I am NOT very computer literate, so simplistically:  what is the problem, and who do I ask to fix it for me.
Friendly greetings to all you talented people - Rose

Can you assign more memory to the virtual machine (via the Parallels configuration menus)?
Photoshop CS5 has had an update recently, 12.0.1.  If Help - About in Photoshop is showing 12.0.0 you should run the updater (Help - Updates...).
It may be that the OpenGL drivers in Parallels aren't up to the requirements of Photoshop.  It's quite challenging to get OpenGL right in a virtual machine environment, and the virtualization companies are furiously releasing new versions with more and more graphics capabilities just so gamers will buy their software over the competition's.  Try disabling the OpenGL feature via Edit - Preferences - Performance and see if that helps.

  • OpenGL seemingly deactivates after use of quick selection tool (PS CS5)

Before using the quick selection tool, I am able to smoothly zoom in and out by holding Ctrl+Space and dragging with the mouse.
If I use the quick selection tool, however, the marching ants line turns into a strange box. I no longer am able to zoom smoothly but instead with the technique above I draw a rectangle which I zoom into. This indicates to me, that OpenGL has been deactivated. I want my smooth zoom back!
I noticed that the preferences always show OpenGL as active, no matter which of the above "state" I'm in. I tried updating my AMD graphics card's driver without success. I found a post describing similar OpenGL problems on the same graphics card and installed the linked driver; the post was 2 years old, but it worked. Re-installing more recent version (Catalyst-Version 12.6) brought the problem back. Newer versions of the driver seem all to suffer from the same problem.
    I'm using
    Windows 7 64-bit,
64-bit Photoshop Extended from CS5 Production Premium,
    AMD Radeon HD 4600 (currrently Catalyst-Version 13.1).
    I tried:
"Downgrading" the driver (only really old version worked, as mentioned above),
reseting Photoshops preferences (Ctrl+Alt+Shift at start),
deactivating OpenGL (reactivating only works after restart and problem reappears) but I miss the smooth zoom.
I hope I could clarify the problem and thank you for reply!

    I seriously can't download version 13.4...
This is my input for the driver search on their homepage (I'm German, that's why some words are German...):
This is the result I get from the above input:
I have not a single clue, how I am supposed to download another version than the current. AMD makes it really difficult for me.
Maybe someone could post a link to another version? That would be really nice!
Also I tried the "Driver Autodetect". Catalyst-Version 13.1 is now installed...
This actually seems to be a thread for the AMD-Support, but maybe someone knows a workaround?

  • Quick Selection Tool Crashes CS5?

Hello, Recently when I've gone to use the Quick Selection Tool I see no "marching ants" and CS5 crashes a couple of seconds after finishing the brush stroke.  I've replaced the graphics card and installed the latest GPU driver.  I uninstalled Photoshop and reinstalled it.  My system description is below my sig.  Has anybody seen this behavior?

    Hi Noel,
Yeah, I kind of made a long story short.  I have a display anomaly as well.  Two different display cards, two different driver families.  Here's the URL for that thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2974532#2974532
Removing all remnants of drivers usually includes editing the registry.  I haven't come across instructions of what to do in that regard.  I uninstalled CS3 (my most recent PS version) and uninstalled all plugins except Portraiture by Imagenomic.  Portraiture crashes Photoshop a lot when I use it.  After installing CS3 I defragged my drives then ran CCleaner and cleaned the registry.  After uninstalling CS5 I defragged again and reinstalled it.
There is something badly wrong with my system, but it only shows up when using PS CS5.  Is there a diagnostic for driver conflicts?
This is my last system running Windows XP.  I plan on retiring it as soon as I can bring my latest build up to snuff.  I'm dreading installing Office 2007 on the now PC and having activation problems.  I want to make sure Office works on the new PC before decommissioning the one this thread is about.  I'm also waiting for Dreamweaver CS5.  DW 8 won't run on the new Windows 7 64-bit PC.  I ordered it four days ago and can't get a response from Newegg.  I should have had it today, but my order is still showing "charged"!

  • Quick Selection Tool Problem - Cursor Stuck in Subtract

    Hey All,
I somehow caused the quick selection tool default to be "on always" in the subtraction (minus - ) position; I am able to access the add (plus +) position by using the shift key , but this causes some problems as those are not the defaults keys for this tool or program for that matter.
    Can anyone help?
    2Divman

Be sure the tool isn't set to subtract in the options bar. Otherwise, try resetting the tool by right- or control-clicking the blue arrow just to the right of the tool preset (under the blue PS icon in the below screenshot) to reset the tool.

  • Quick Selection Tool problem

My Quick Selection Tool seems to be extremely quick to select the entire image.  Even with a very small size and very slow movement, I am having a hard time selecting what I intend to.  I don't remember having this problem a week ago.
Is there a sensitivity level or something I am missing?  I do have the quick selection tool selected (not the wand) and I have reset the tool.
    I appreciate any help.  Thanks.

I think I was having a trackpad tap-select snafu. I seemed to be able to scrub/protect an area with the minus selection tool before actually selecting anything and thought that was neat. But I can't replicate the behavior so I'm sure it was just me doing as I do. Maybe to OP can provide a link (the double-q seems interesting).

  • Quick Selection tool in CS5 doesn't select everything

I hope I am posting in the correct place.  If not, please tell me where to post my question, thanks.
I am using the quick selection tool to select my image.  When I click on 'Refine Edge' it looks great.  When I output to a new layer or new document, etc., parts of the image are missing.
For example, I have an image of two girls (attached).  When I click 'Refine Edge,' it looks just the way I want.  But if I choose to put it into a new document or new layer, the red-haired girl's hands and legs disappear.  This isn't the first time this has happened - I just finally got frustrated enough to ask for help.  Thanks and let me know what I am doing wrong.
(The first is B&W in 'refine edge', the second is Overlay view in 'refine edge', and the last one is the results (with disappearing hands and legs)

I assumed it wouldn’t help based on other comments.  Using Mac OS X 10.9.3, ID CSS 6 version 8.
I just logged out and then logged in and the problem cleared up but did the same thing before and it cleared up and then came back.  Any ideas why this is intermittent?
    Thanks.

  • Quick Selection Tool Problems in CS5-PC-Win7

    1) I am trying to use the QST to outline a butterfly and macaw. Problem is that while in the process of outlining the image, the QST stops at some point in the particular image outline form and goes to selecting the image square from corner to corner.
The image that I was before trying to outline looses the "crawling ants" and just the rectangular border is now outlined.
    Am I doing something wrong?
    2) Next how do I create a new layer with mask so I can adjust the background? Thanks!
    Dan

You're trying to convert a Selection into a Layer Mask?
    Try exactly these steps:
    1.  Make your selection of the foreground object (i.e., that which you want VISIBLE).
    2.  Press the Refine Edge button.
    3.  Make sure the Output To: selection is Layer Mask or New Layer with Layer Mask.
    4.  Complete the Refine Edge function.
    5.  Note carefully, in your LAYERS panel, what it created.

  • Bounding box and selection tool problems (CS5.5 Illustrator OSX)

When I select objects by dragging arrow tool (i.e. logos, headlines, etc.) I often have a problem that other objects are also selected (images, things that are not visible or not actually there) and I can't unselect them easily to get just my selection of objects and be able to resize them by dragging corners. It's like you have to scale everything including the weird extra invisible items across the page somewhere. Sometimes if it's an image that gets selected in addition I can click on and off it to get just my selected objects. And then sometimes the bounding box does not work at all and I can't resize my selected objects by dragging the corners (scale tool works though). Showing and hiding bounding box from drop down menu does nothing. This seems random but happens all the time. It also happened in CS5 on a different Mac computer. Anybody run into this? I know other designers in the office have experienced this. Is there a weird selection preference I need to set? Should I try resetting preferences? Could it be Ram issues? (Sometimes have Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign open all at once)
I've just been dealing with it up to this point but I am really ready for a fix for this issue. It seems buggy.

    Pam,
You may try to move the folder, following the first hint here: http://www.bugge.com/Family-and-friends/Illy/illy.html

  • Quick Selection Tool CS5

When Using Quick Selection Tool In CS5 it shuts down my whole computer? Have disabled Open GL and quit and reopened PS...

Hi there! Because the forum you originally posted in is for beginners trying to learn the basics of Photoshop, I moved your question to the Photoshop General Discussion forum, where you'll get more specialized help.
To help others help you, please read through this article and provide any additional relevant details.

  • Why won't the Quick Select tool select transparent canvas.

I remember being able to select anything on the canvas with my Quick Select tool in CS5.5 Photoshop Extended. Recently, making the switch to CC, the Quick Select tool will show my slection as I drag along the canvas, but once I release the mouse, the selection seems to be reduced to the visible pixels. I was intentionally trying to fill the transparent sections with my effects as well.
Mind you, the magic wand will select transparent pixels just fine, but it also adds unintentional sections which is irritating. I should probably also pint out that I already looked into the "lock transparence" option in the layers, but I did not activate anything of the sort.

I see how my question can be kind of vague, sorry about that.
I have an image with a transparent background and a layer with, as stated below, pixels missing. With the wand, when I select a section of the layer that has no pixels, it selects every transparent section of that layer within the canvases borders. Thing is, I only wish to select a particular transparent section without touching the existing pixels. My hands are not as gifted as I would like them to be when painting a mask unless I zoom in ten-fold for every inch of the image.
To clarify further, the Quick Select tool's marquee shows everything working as I would expect it to until I release the mouse button. Then, for a reason beyond me, the selection gets reduced to existing pixels in the layer only.

  • Problem with 'quick select' tool.

In my copy of CS5 Extended, when I select the 'quick select' tool, it takes forever for it to create the selection. During this time, the window is frozen - can't change anything else, can't select edit, can't select anything. Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening?
    Thank you.

The best way to fix this problem is to adjust your brush size and hardness. Set your spacing to about 25%. Your brush size (realistically) corresponds to your selected colors/exposure values and your hardness corresponds to the value rules you dictate. If you have an image that is varying degrees of red, make sure YOU KNOW what you want to be selected. For the majority of us, this is a hit/miss scenario but we all learn from our misses.
This is probably NOT the venue where this problem should be addressed but I just wanted to offer you some insight.

For the sake of clarity and to save people time, Todd is asking about the behaviour of the Patch tool when using it to repair the area next to the young lad's head.  Todd gets a blurred dark tone pretty much regardless of the options he uses.
IMO that's what I would expect to happen because of the close proximity of the other image elements i.e. the lad's neck and the strong lines of his shirt.  I would not choose to use the Patch tool in this situation.  Content Aware Fill makes a better stab at it.

  • Quick selection tool preference

My quick selection tool has reversed it's default position. Normally, when you open this tool, it's natural position is to add and you have to press alt ( on my pc ) to subtract. Mine is default subtract and you have to hit shift to add. Not a huge problem bit it's annoying. I've looked in preferences and can't see what I've done. It was okay until a couple of days ago ! Can anyone help ? I am using CS5 Windows 7.
    Regards,
    TL.
