Quick Selection Tool

I am having a problem with the quick selection tool.  When using this tool, the object that you select should automatically find the full edges of the object.  When I use this tool it does not do that, and I am wondering if there is anything else that I need to change or select for the tool to work properly?
Thank you!

Try resetting the tool first.
Select the tool. Look for the down pointing arrow to the right of the tool, click on that. A box will open. Look for another arrow at the top right area and click on that. Go down the list and select reset tool. I am not positive but I think you have to restart PS for it to take effect.

  • Quick selection tool not working correctly

I am trying to extract a portion of a photo...i tried using the selection tool to extract the portion on another picture, and it worked GREAT!
Now i'm trying to use it in another photo and the refine image tool isn't extracting it into a new layer like it did with the other one!
is there something that i may have clicked or turned off that is preventing me from making this extraction??

    Hello,
Could you be more specifc as to what you are doing here?
You mention using selections tools, including the Quick Selection tool, but these tools only create selections, they do not extract the material you have selected. A selection is like highlighting text in a word processor, after you have highlighted the text you can copy/paste it or modify it, but simply highlighting it doesn't do anything. Same with selections, once you have created a selection with a tool like Quick Selection you can how copy/paste it to a new image or perform adjustments to just that area.
I'm not sure what you mean by the "refine image tool", we don't have anything by that name. However, we do have a Refine Edge option that helps to make cleaner edges to your selection.

  • Magic Quick Selection Tool NOT working right. Help please?

We've used the magic quick selection tool lots and most of the time it works well.
It's very slow.............. v  e r y slow and I'm wondering if there's a patch to download from Adobe or
what to do to fix this.  We have pictures to edit and it's making the editing torture.  Please help?
    Thank you so much. tkccvalentine

It's the Quick Selection Tool in Photoshop Elements 9 and I'm trying to get the background and make it another layer so I can even out the color of the background then bring down the transparency.  Not sure if that makes sense.  I'm new to this....  Sometimes the area it will grab can go ...not fast.. but not slow.  Sometimes it's like it's just messed up and literally takes 30 seconds to process each move.  I rebooted my computer and re opened it and it helped a little.  It's not clear what causes it when it messes up and when it doesn't.  Just frustrating.  It's probably user error because I'm so new at Photoshop.   Thanks for your input.   I really appreciate it.

  • Change the background with a bunch of kids? Quirky quick selection tool?

Main Objective:  How can I change the background behind a bunch of kids? My quick selection tool is quirky! Like the HS kids in the pic….
The 2nd photo is what I am looking to do.
When I try the quick selection tool, it's all wonky & quirky now.  I can't select little bits any more! It just basically takes the whole stinkin' page! What did I do?!  Are there defaults?
On watched video number 85 today, I tried to use my stylus and the bamboo pad. (Good grief; that's another story...it moves & I'm not even touching the pad; what's up with that?! Way too confusing, so I gave up!)
    Anyway..this is what I need.
What is easier for me to remove the background?  The kids?  Pretend I didn't say yes to help with this project?
All the video tutorials on how to remove backgrounds is always on a perfect object...not a real life mess of a class.  So... HELP!!!
    Please.
This is WAY over my head; but I'm trying. Really.
On a mac with CC membership.

You may find it easier to select the kids than the background. Instead of copying to new layer, create a mask, then you can add or remove as you like.
In the top tool bar click the icon in the middle to add to selection. Then use your option key to remove.
When you are nearing done, you can then refine the mask. If necessary you can use the other selection tool for straight lines, large areas etc. For tight places you may prefer to use the quick mask tool (lowercase q)
Take your time, you will get it. And like I said, using a mask will let you take a breather. It can help walking away for a bit.

  • Quick Selection Tool doesn't work

This has probably been addressed, but can't seem to find it.  It's driving me nuts.
In Elements 6.0,  I have found the Quick Selection Tool quite useful.  However, I often find that it does not work; not creating an outlined selection.
Have others found this?  Do I have some setting incorrect?  Is this an Adobe bug?  I have reverted to all default settings, but no dice.
    Thanks!

Ya, I can't make it work. I've watched a million videos online with people that seem to think it's amazing, but I have spent HOURS trying to cut out a simple image that would have taken me ten seconds on my ancient CS2. After owning this new product for two months I am still opening up my old version of Photoshop to extract images. Every time I start outlining something, the Quick Selection Tool goes all over the place, and when I do finally get it somewhat close to outlining what I want, I can't figure out how to save what I want. Lame.

  • Quick Selection Tool Problem - Cursor Stuck in Subtract

    Hey All,
I somehow caused the quick selection tool default to be "on always" in the subtraction (minus - ) position; I am able to access the add (plus +) position by using the shift key , but this causes some problems as those are not the defaults keys for this tool or program for that matter.
    Can anyone help?

Be sure the tool isn't set to subtract in the options bar. Otherwise, try resetting the tool by right- or control-clicking the blue arrow just to the right of the tool preset (under the blue PS icon in the below screenshot) to reset the tool.

  • Quick selection tool,How to programme the function of this tool?

Recently, I intend to extract from a picture on the edge of oil tank。I found  that this quick selection tool  can meet my
requirement。 But I do not know how to achieve it in VC ++ 。I would like to ask somebody who knows it???thanks~~~~~

The question doesn't make sense in the SDK forum either.
Why are you trying to control the tool programmatically?
And I don't think you really can control that tool programatically - it's meant to be interactive.

  • ???quick selection tool in CS6 PS???

Suddenly, it's not possible to select two-color object with the quick selection tool in CS6 PS. Only the outline is selected. Forced to go into the brush tool and manually select the whole object, or select by color only which creates it's own problems. Magic wand will only select the interior of the object, or the outline only, not the entire object. Where are the settings to disable this unfortunate development?

Are you running a RGB image?
To reset tool have it selected and right click on icon in upper left corner.

  • Quick selection tool preference

My quick selection tool has reversed it's default position. Normally, when you open this tool, it's natural position is to add and you have to press alt ( on my pc ) to subtract. Mine is default subtract and you have to hit shift to add. Not a huge problem bit it's annoying. I've looked in preferences and can't see what I've done. It was okay until a couple of days ago ! Can anyone help ? I am using CS5 Windows 7.

    Try re-setting the Tool:

  • Quick Selection Tool problem

My Quick Selection Tool seems to be extremely quick to select the entire image.  Even with a very small size and very slow movement, I am having a hard time selecting what I intend to.  I don't remember having this problem a week ago.
Is there a sensitivity level or something I am missing?  I do have the quick selection tool selected (not the wand) and I have reset the tool.
    I appreciate any help.  Thanks.

I think I was having a trackpad tap-select snafu. I seemed to be able to scrub/protect an area with the minus selection tool before actually selecting anything and thought that was neat. But I can't replicate the behavior so I'm sure it was just me doing as I do. Maybe to OP can provide a link (the double-q seems interesting).

  • Quick selection tool always contains minus sign

I am obviously not a very experienced Photoshop user and I have a question about the Quick Selection tool. I am using CS6 on a Mac with OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
I watched a couple tutorials and my system is behaving differently. In the tutorials I watched, when the quick selection tool is chosen the "brush" contains a plus sign. If too much area is selected, that can be corrected by holding the option/alt key and this changes the brush to a minus sign. On my computer, when I select the tool the brush always contains a minus sign. I think the tool is working OK but I wonder why I never see the plus sign inside the brush.
    Please advise.
    Thank you.

Be sure the tool isn't set to subtract in the options bar. Otherwise, try resetting the tool by right- or control-clicking the blue arrow just to the right of the tool preset (under the blue PS icon in the below screenshot) to reset the tool.

  • Quick selection tool only wants to make angular selections

I'm using PS CC on a Mac, OS 10.9.4 . My quick selection tool suddenly decided to be heavily biased towards making angular selections. It REALLY does not want to follow curves.  I have restarted the computer and checked that the brush size and other options are set to values that have been working for me: no luck. I'd appreciate any hints as to how to get my quick selection tool back to behaving itself, TIA.

Found the answer. I fixed the problem by checking "Sample All Layers"

  • QUICK SELECTION TOOL HELP!

I am trying to use the quick selection tool to select images in my photo. When I use it I can see what I am selecting then as soon as I release the mouse button the selection disappears. Please help if anyone knows why this is happening. Also the refine edge button is not working.

Be sure you aren't on an empty layer... If you are on the right layer, you might try this tool reset:

  • Quick selection tool error message

When I use the quick selection tool (or when I use content-aware scaling) I get an error message saying "could not complete your request because of a program error." I am working with NEF files, 4 GB of RAM, fast machine with plenty of scratch space, Radeon X1950 crossfire graphics card. With small .jpg files, the problem doesn't occur. Thanks for any help.

That's right, Chris... and even when I turn it off, it seems erratic as to whether or not the scaling works. I just tried it again and couldn't get it to work without the program error message even when I turned it off. I suspect that if I reboot the whole machine it might work but I'm not sure. Something is buggy in there.

  • Quick selection tool doesn't snap to to the nearest area. Working more like a lasso tool and the add layer button doesn't seem to creat the cutout that it should.

Quick selection tool in elements 13 doesn't snap to the nearest border area of the photo. Works more like a lasso. Also the add layer button when clicked on only brings up a black layer, not a black mask with a hole where I just cut.

Which OS are you working on?
Please try resetting your tools from Photo Bin flyout menu.
    1. Open Photo bin.
    2. Click on Fly Out menu
    3. Click on option Reset all Tools
    4. Relaunch Editor13
    and see if it helps.
    Thanks,
