Quick swipe comping multiple tracks?

recently upgraded to Logic Studio from logic pro 7...I'm loving the quick swipe comping feature!!
anyone know if there is a way to use the quick swipe comping on multiple tracks simultaneously? for example, comping multi-track drums?
I've tried grouping the tracks, but can only get comping to work on one track at a time...

Hi all. I've searched the forum a bit for an answer, but couldn't find one. Here's the deal:
I finally need to do drum comping in Logic 8. I understand groups and enabling the edit feature, but man, am I getting some screwy results! (I have used the comping feature before on non-grouped tracks and it's worked fine.)
I can select whole takes, and every so often I can quick-swipe another take, but logic seems to erratically "undo" all my previous comps sometimes. Other times, it won't let me quick swipe at all. I'm in version 8.0.1.
Any ideas? Man, this thing would be a great tool *if it worked correctly*! I know, I know, no whining. But you gotta know how it feels when you're in the middle of a session.

  • Does Quick-Swipe comping work correctly for anybody?

I have searched these threads a bit and I guess there's no answer.
I'm trying to comp a grouped, multi-track drum recording. It's getting very frustrating because I need it to work so bad.
If anybody tells me that their Logic set-up can do this, let me know. Maybe I just need to re-install...

Quick swipe comping is of no value for normal audio production. If you want to hear different takes quickly or shift timing around it's useless. Hopefully the programming hours expended to develop this feature were minimal. It makes the conceptual focus of what the apple team is doing look misguided. Even what its intended to do can be accomplished much more efficiently by making multiple tracks and cutting and sliding. I have looked at it closely and it always results in many more mouse moves and less flexibility that just recording in replace record and piling up multiple tracks. I wish they would have spent the time making the program stable or making the group function actually work for automation.

  • Quick-swipe comping-Miditracks

    Hello,
I’m puzzled because I’ve got multiple take folders set up, but theres no option for quick-take comping in the menu, and no quick-take comping icon in the region.
Is this because I am on a midi-track..? (Maybe one cannot quick-swipe comp on a midi-track..?)
    Many thanks!

Correct--unfortunately, swipe comping is not supported with MIDI tracks.
    Please file a feature request:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/logicpro.html
In my opinion, MIDI overdubbing is the biggest weakness currently in Logic: the only way to compile a take from multiple overlapping MIDI regions is to create multiple tracks and tediously scissor cut and mute sections.  IMO, Logic badly needs to upgrade MIDI editing to mirror audio editing:
    1) Allow left and right edge of a MIDI region to be dragged around to show/play and hide/mute MIDI notes.
    2) Provide a bin/list of MIDI recordings, so regions can be conveniently stored and retrieved.
    3) Support swipe comping for MIDI tracks.
#3 would be an awesome feature--I'm not aware that any other platform allows this.  But #1 and #2... frankly, I'm not aware of ANY other DAW that *lacks* those features.  Logic badly needs to catch up with MIDI region editing and management.

  • Logic crashing while quick swipe comping

Hi, When I click on a region in quick swipe comping mode Logic X crashes. However, if I just try slowly drag across and highlight the region it doesn't crash.
It is only happening in sessions after I have been working in them a while, so if I start a new project it works as it should.
Has anyone had a similar experince? I used Logic 8 and 9 for years and never experienced this.
BTW these are sessions that were started in Logic 9.
    Thanks!

    Hi Matt,
Unfortunately, I've not found a fix - or the reason why it's happening. Someone on another forum suggested it may be due to Mavericks having issues handling memory, which may be the cause but I did use Logic 9 on Mavericks with no problems.
If you copy your track onto another track it will usually work ok.
These are all the issues I've been experiencing:
    - When I change the region selection in the take folder I can see and hear another region under the one I'm selecting. It looks greyed out but I can still see it and hear it.
I tried re-starting my Mac (running Mavericks) and it did the same thing. If I copy the comp to another track it works fine so I'm thinking some how the file is corrupted? I've been using Logic daily since Logic 8 and have only experienced weird glitches in Logic X.
-When selecting a region in Quick Swipe (by clicking the mouse) it causes the session to crash but if I selected it slowly by dragging the mouse across the region it works fine.
    - The triangle toggle switch to open the take folder doesn't work so I can't hide the takes.
Yes, it is very annoying, especially when it worked so well for years - I'm now seriously considering going back to Pro Tools. Good luck!

  • Quick Swipe Comping not working

I've recorded a few takes of a vocal. The takes show up as a comp, with the disclosure triangle in the upper left and the comp menu in the upper right. But I can't drag any selections in the takes to edit the comp via quick swiping. This used to work just fine and now it just doesn't. The pointer never changes to the quick swipe cursor when I point at the edge of a selection where one take ends and another take begins. It's baffling. Anyone have an idea what I could be missing?

I also am experiencing this problem. Quick-swipe comping does not work, and then I copy into a new project and it works again. Closing and opening the project back does not fix, rebooting computer does not fix. I have been getting around it by manually dragging a copy of each take from the "Audio Bin" sidebar tab into new tracks in the arrange window, and then doing old-fashioned slicing and comping from there. This has only been happening to me recently (the earliest i can pin it down is maybe jan or feb. 2010).
For some reason, the problem-take shows up in the Audio Bin tab (& Audio Bin window) with a little lock symbol by it. I looked this up in the user manual (p.292) and it says the lock signifies a "protected" region, which means you can't change the start or end points of the file. This would explain why we can't do quick-swipe comping. However, the manual states you can unlock the region by going to the Audio Bin window (not the tab) and clicking on the lock. THIS IS NOT WORKING. I can lock or unlock other takes at ease, but i cannot unlock my problem take.

  • No Quick Swipe Comping Button.

Hi, i have logic pro 9, but when I record some takes in cycle mode, I cannot edit these takes
with quick swipe comping, there is no button or function when I go the right triangle.
can anybody help? best regards toni

Same problem here. Can't find any info in the manual or online. The manual has all these great things you can do with comp folders but does not address the situation where the "quick swipe comping" icon is missing.

  • Quick Swipe Comping shortcut

    Hello all!
I'm using Logic Express 9.1.1, mostly to edit my classical studio recordings. I am currently working on a 19-minute quartet.
There appears to be only one way to toggle Quick Swipe Comping: scroll all the way to the end of the piece and click on the button at the right-hand side of my comp. As you can imagine, this is tedious. Is there a shortcut I don't know about?
    Thanks,
    Kieren.

Have you tried to find out what's a key command for this function? If there isn't any, you can surely create one in Key Command editor: Preferences -> Key Commands (or Option+K)

  • Audio playback issues when editing quick swipe comp folders.

My new Imac running ML 10.8.2 is having issues when I want to edit drums tracks that I have grouped together. I recorded the tracks before grouping them. After opening group settings and checking the 'editing (selection)' and 'phase locked audio boxes' I get a spinning beach ball for 10sec. I then expand my take folders to start editing and the computer performance becomes very sluggish and playback stutters and crackles, sometimes turning well recorded drum tracks into a non recognizable mush as various tracks are playing at once. It appears that when I group the tracks together prior to recording and check the necessary boxes that quick swipe editing works fine. When I open old projects on my new iMac that were recorded running Snow Leopard and my old MacBook Pro that use comp editing, it all works smoothly and I can continue editing no problems. So does this mean that these new tracks are somehow corrupted? How can I rescue them? I can't figure it out! I used to be able to set up groups and edit after recording raw on my old setup, surely this is some kind of bug caused from the upgrade to 10.2.8 and/or Logic 9.1.8? It's nothing to do with my Pro 40 interface I don't think as I unplug it and the problem is still audible through built in speakers. Might the recording be corrupt due to connecting Saffire pro 40 via a firewire 800 to thunderbolt adapter?
I've tried copying/pasting regions into a new project, the regions are all the same length, there are no plugins on the channel strips, the recordings sound fine until I try to edit them, sample rate is consistent (24/48). The main difference to making editing possible seems to be grouping prior to recording or not, which shouldn't make a difference should it? Anyone who can shed a little light on this situation, I will be forever appreciative to! I've got work that needs doing ASAP!
    My setup is:
    iMac, i7 3.1Ghz, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD, Mountain Lion 10.2.8
    Logic Pro 9.1.8
Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 (connected to thunderbolt port via thunderbolt==>firewire 800 adapter)

    Anyone?
This is serioulsy BS, it was all working fine before I went and upgraded everything and now it is worse than prior to upgrading. That's not how it's supposed to work.

  • Quick Swipe comping

I haven't managed to find the answer to this...
If I'm making a comp using QS, is there a way to monitor one of the takes but see the comp track above? I want to swipe across parts of a take while listening to it, not hearing the comp!

You can move the selected part within takes by just clicking on each take track ..the comp take will update to the region you select in the new take.
additionally if you place your mouse arrow in the middle of the selected region within the take you can move it left or right(adjust/finetune the selection)...you can also place the mouse between the selected region and the muted region and adjust the length.....
You don't need to solo each...the selection will move between takes if you click below or above from the take that you originally quick swipe selected...

  • Quick swipe comp broken

    Hi there,
This has recently got broken somehow after working fine for ages.
I've got 5 choir tracks all recorded normally into take folders. But now when I select takes the other 4 'slaved' tracks are no longer following suit.
I've got all the usual Groups Editing/PhaseLocked boxes checked.

    Wooaah.
Its weirder than I thought. 4 out of 5 tracks are swiping like they should but there's just one track thats not following the leadr at all. Frustrating

  • Swipe Comping with Multitracked Instruments

    Hey,
If I record several drum kit takes with 7 mics at a time, and I wish to quick swipe comp together my part, basically crossfading between the takes in exactly the same place on each track but while keeping the tracks seperate for editing later, is there an easier way I can do this than the painstaking method of deciding my comp on one track then recreating the cuts exactly on each of the other tracks?
An easy solution would be greatly appreciated,
    Cheers

Simply group the drum tracks, and make sure that in your 'group settings', you've checked 'edit/selection' so that when you select any member track of the group, the other tracks will be selected as well.
THen swipe/comp any one of your grouped drum tracks and the same edits will take place on all other grouped tracks. Simple as that!
It's great -- when it works. I still encounter random weirdness with the swiping feature, but for the most part it gets the job done. Just save often, or make sure to save a "pre comp" version, then use a new file name, like "DrumTakes_Edit" once you start the slicing and dicing.
    good luck.

  • Comping several tracks at once... how can I use quick swipe edit?

    Hi Guys,
We've just recorded a piano over two stereo tracks, now it's comping time.
We don't want to comp the tracks seperately... is there a way to link the two tracks so the swipe-comping we do will be reflected in both?
I'm sure there's an option for this for comping multi-mic drum situations... I just can't find a reference to it anywhere in the manual....
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Mike

    Hi Jim,
Just discovered this! Thanks for the reply though - I had only used grouping for volumes previously, now I've seen all the options that you can include and exclude in a group, it's fantastic!
    Cheers,
    Mike

  • How to do one comp on multiple tracks..

I may be missing the an obvious feature, but I can't work out how to apply the same comp to multiple tracks. I.e. I record an instrument with more then one mic and am left with several tracks of the same take however from different microphone and positions. I then comp the best take, however I want my comp to be the same on each of the individual tracks. Please could someone help?
    Regards,
    t

I believe I may have answered this before, but anyway: the trick is to make the tracks part of the same group. In the group settings, chose only Regions selection (Edit). Now, when you edit one track, the other tracks in the same group will follow.
    Hope this helped!

  • Comping multi-Track multi-take Drums

    Hi everyone,
In the last days I recorded a set of drum tracks. I'm looking for a good way to comp them so that a crash that was hit in take 1 can fade out while take 2 is already starting to play. I thought that might be possible to do wit hthe comping feature but I know think I was wrong about that, it obviously wasnt intended to do that.
So I unpacked the comps resultung in multiple tracks with only one channel strip (which is what I want). Unfortunately, only one of the unpacked tracks can be heared when i hit play. The regions on the other tracks are greyed out, also displaying a blue circle on the top left of the region box.
However, when I take the very same region out of the "bin"-box and put it in this second track it works! I could do this every time now but obviously I am quite sure that I'm missing something here. And help is greatly appreciated.

Well, turns out those regions where muted. Who knew you could even do that, I didn't. Thanks anway.
Well, I did! But you answered your own question very quickly, so you didn't need us to tell you about muting... And we didn't have the time to react...
But you are not exactly the first to have stumbled over unintended muting... that default keycommand 'M' (mute/unmute selected region) is just too easy to hit unnoticed, when thumbing the spacebar...
