Quick time failed to initialise, error 2096
I upgraded to itunes 7.1 and now I cannot open itunes. Keep getting the error 2096 message. Tried to reinstall itunes with no luck, same error message.Pliz help.I am losing my cool.
Is your QuickTime working if you try to open it?
If you get a 2096 error, see:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1875
Otherwise see:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1489
If your QuickTime works normally let me know.
The 2096 error has often been associated with compatability mode problems.
Otherwise try a complete removal of all iTunes related programs:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
Then download and install the version of Quicktime that does not include iTunes:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
Check that it works
Then try installing iTunes.

Quick Time failed to initialize (Error - 2096)
Can anyone help, Ive just upgraded to this and tried for literally hours and hours and more or less give up, anyone know whats the score with this??? Any help appreciated guys....
I had the same problem. It took me a while, but I finally fixed the problem. Here is what I did:
1) Remove old versions of iTunes, QuickTime, and iPod.
2) Restart computer
3) Load latest Window operating system. From SP2 to SP3 (Service Package)
4) Restart
5) Load iTunes and Quicktime latest version
6) Open Qicktime
7) Open iTunes (I got the same error message!)
8) The problem lies in the shortcut for iTunes. If you open the properties of the iTunes shortcut and the one for Quicktime. You'll notice that the iTunes shortcut is gray out in the Target area in the otherhand the Quicktime shortcut has the entire link to the program in the C:drive. I know it sounds kind of crazy, but this was the problem.
9) Delete iTunes shortcut
10) Open Window Explorer and travel to the iTunes.exc file in the C:drive
11) Create iTunes shortcut in that folder (right click on the file "Create shortcut")
12) Drag and drop shortcut to desktop
13) Open iTunes
Hopefully this will work.
Good luck -

I get this warning all the time.
On Google, it shows that a lot of people also have the same warning. The solutions do not seem very clear how to get rid of it.
Pls help.( I had the same prob. this worked for me..Good luck...)
1.Quit iTunes.
2. Windows XP and Windows 2000: On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
-Windows Vista: On the Start menu, click Computer.
4. In My Computer, open the C:\ drive (or whichever disk your Windows XP is installed on).
5. Open the Program Files folder.
6. Open the iTunes folder.
7. Right-click on the iTunes application (iTunes or iTunes.exe) and from the shortcut menu, click Properties.
8. Click the Compatibility tab.
9. Deselect the checkbox under Compatibility mode if it's selected.
10. Click OK.
11. Open iTunes and play a song. -
I have been advised to resolve the problem i should go to the properties window and click the compatibility tab and deselect all checkboxes currently selected in the compatibility tab and then click apply.
My problem is that i only seem to have general, sharing and customise tabs in my properties window. Where do I go from here???My problem is that i only seem to have general, sharing and customise tabs in my properties window. Where do I go from here???
That sounds like you're right-clicking a folder and selecting "properties", Richard.
Try right-clicking on the QuickTimePlayer.exe file (located inside the C:\Program Files\QuickTime\ folder), as per the following screenshot:
... and then selecting "Properties".
Can you see your Compatibility tab now? -
I installed itunes and quick time but when I try to open itunes I get a message that reads "quicktime failed to initialize (error -2096). I have removed both itunes and quicktime from my computer and re-installed them and I still get the same message. What do I do to get itunes to work?

Error Message 3 Quick Time failed to install
I have tried every way I know possible to download iTunes. I have loaded Quicktime stand alone, I have loaded iTunes to my hard drive and tried to start the install from there and not the internet. I have turned off all firewalls and virus/spyware software. I continue to get Error Message 3, Quick Time failed to install. I am very frustrated with this problem as well as the run around I'm getting from Apple. I can't even update my iPod. I thought my iPod purchase was going to be great. But after the short battery life issue and now the software issue. I am starting to re-think my purchase. Does anyone have a solution to the software problem that works??? Apple even tried to blame the problem on my computer. I see from all the people that have this problem in this forum it is not my computer. Please help if you can...Thanks, M

On my PC, I cannot run itunes, I keep getting this error message" Quick Time failed to initialized (error02096) Quick time is required to run please unistall itunes then install itunes again, I have done this three times and I keep getting the same error message. I have had itunes for years, but up until 2 months ago the quick time will not initialize to run it.
Try using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and delete the iTunes installer. Then try installing iTunes again

My itunes account wouldn't open, so I had to uninstall and re-install. I've done this 3 times with an error popping up everytime that "Quick time failed to initialize". The message then suggests I uninstall itunes and reinstall. If I click on Quicktime, independently, it opens right up with no problem. What can I do?

After iTunes 7.6 update: QuickTime failed to initialize (error -2096
"QuickTime failed to initialize (error -2096).
QuickTime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes."
After upgrading to iTunes 7.6 this morning, I get this error when trying to run iTunes or Quicktime. I was using the Apple Updater. I got no errors when running the installer.
I downloaded the 7.6 setup file and attempted to repair the install. I still receive the same error.
There is an article indicating that turning off Compatibility mode would resolve this issue, but Compatibility mode is not turned on for iTues or QuickTime.
The same issue is discussed in the Quicktime forum, here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6400305
I am running on Windows 2003.
Note I had iTunes open earlier today, and it was working fine. It was only when I upgraded to 7.6 (I think I was at 7.4 before. It was definetly 7.something).Thanks for this discussion and I hope Apple fixes this soon. It took me forever but installing QT 7.2 and installing the less recent itunes update from filehippo finally resolved it for me. Of course the reason it took me forever was that every time I reinstalled itunes, I was using the default setting that was updating QT & Apple also (in hindsight it sounds really dumb, but no one had mentioned that).
This is the first itunes update that has ever gone wrong for me - I've used itunes for 5 yrs (my 1st ipod was a 2nd gen touch wheel). I wonder if some MS developers went to work at Apple to exact revenge...? -
Quicktime failed to initialize error -2096 using itunes 8, WinServer2003
Quicktime failed to initialize error -2096
I am getting this when trying to run Itunes 8 on windows 2003 standard
When i click on "QTInfo.exe" it says "Not Installed"
I tried re-installing a few times, all the regular stuff. When I searched help, all I see is a bunch of ninny suggestions like check if it is running in compatibility mode.
Itunes used to work with:
Itunes v7.7 + v7.3.1 Quicktime
(I did NOT use the standard itunes 7.7 installer, since it trys to install Quicktime 7.5)
Basically I'm looking for Apple or someone to tell me what are the files causing the problem so I can bypass it.
This is highly aggravating because we have 2 iphones now that are not able to sync because I updated them to v2.1 which doesnt work with v7.7 of itunes.
I do not actually use quicktime, so if there is a way to trick itunes 8 into thinking the latest quicktime is installed, that would be ok with me too.I am going to try these solutions to see if they help. I need to backup my computer before doing so though, I dont want to lose everything.
