Quick Time Hijacks Windows File Associations Only From Web Browsers

It took me 6 hours this morning to conclusively prove that Quick Time (latest version) isn’t playing well with web browsers on my Windows XP Pro (SP3) machine (nothing new here I guess).
I develop web sites which get their content from local hard or DVD/CD drives (as opposed to from the internet). All my Windows file associations for audio/video file types point to Windows Media Player (WMP) so that when one of my web pages looks for a file type of say .mpg or .mp3, WMP is opened and the file is played. Pretty straight forward and has worked fine for years.
Some time in the last few months (and I now strongly suspect after a Quick Time update) my browsers (all of them….. IE, Firefox, and Chrome) started opening Quick Time instead of WMP when my HTML goes to open any media file type. I’ve checked my Windows file associations which all still point to WMP. I also note that when I open one of my media files from a file utility such as Windows Explorer or my aftermarket file utility (as opposed to from a browser), they correctly open in WMP. So…….. its only from browsers that QT hijacks my intended media player.
In Internet Explorer I’ve gone to “Manage Add-Ons” and “disabled” Quick Time. This in fact causes QT not to be opened but instead a blank web page appears containing only the browser’s little error box with a big red X in it which usually means a picture file is missing…… WMP is not launched even though it is enabled in Manage Add-Ons and QT is disabled.
The only way I’ve found to fix this problem is to uninstall Quick Time in which case everything works fine. (My objection to Quick Time as my default media player is that even the latest version doesn’t reliably play video created for Windows file types.)
Can anyone tell me how to make Quick Time co-exist on my computer without hijacking my attempts to get at WMP from browsers?
The only reason Quick Time has existed on my computer in recent years is so I have access to iTunes. I’ve uninstalled both Quick Time and iTunes till I find a solution to this problem which means iTunes isn’t selling me anything in the mean time.

I'm having the same issue that Quicktime hijacks file associations.
I recently reinstalled my copy of Windows 7 64-bit and have installed basically hardly anything on it. I have however installed iTunes (+Quicktime) for my iPhone and Winamp (and not even loaded Windows Media Player).
Basically when I uninstall Quicktime, I can just type an url in the IE8 address bar with the .mp3 extension and download and save the file there and then. Only after installing Quicktime the browser will open the .mp3 in the window and play it embedded with the Quicktime player.
This is something I do NOT want, and I am really ****** off that Quicktime just takes over this feature without asking me first!!
That being besides the point really because I also cannot find the option in Quicktime's settings to undo this!!
When I go to Quicktime's settings -> Browser -> MIME types
It just shows that .mp3 is linked to Winamp (like I want it to be), but it still opens as a Quicktime Control Object.
Reinstalling IE8, resetting its settings, disabling the iTunes & Quicktime addons, even removing the Quicktime Control Object class from the registry... Nothing worked!

Here you can find an mp3 file to use for testing.

Yes Winamp does ask for that, no Quicktime clearly doesn't (not when installing iTunes for my iPhone)
I have Winamp Lite btw, not Pro, but I find it not agressive at all. You can easily select or deselect all the settings during setup and they don't do anything else that you don't want to.
I have also tried that (changing file associations via Control Panel), and (I guess since it was set on Winamp already) it didn't make a difference. Mp3's & Wav's are still opening in the browser.
Besides this there is another similar problem, that whenever I install an upgrade of iTunes (and thus Quicktime), it also resets video file associations to Quicktime which were set to VLC Media Player before the update, WITHOUT asking (again). Though this is easily fixable by reinstalling VLC afterwards, it also is frustrating to say the least.
    Thanks for your help

The Windows Media codec you are using is running in the "demo" mode. To export full clips you must purchase or upgrade to one of the export capable codec components like those included in the "Studio" or "Studio Pro HD" software package.

  • Quick time error "a file could not be found"

Quick time error "a file could not be found" when trying to open a file that exist in a directory name including hebrew characters.
When copying the same file to other directory with english characters only, file opens without any problem.
This is very frustrating since my files are located under My documents directory
The full path of the "My Document" directory is:
    C:\Documents and Settings\אלון\My Documents.
Also, I have IPOD 5G (with video). iTunes does not have any problems with audio files located under the above directory, but video files for my IPOD have the same problem (since probably it is using Quick time). The problem with iTunes is more frustrating since it does not report any error, but you just cant update video podcasts or add video files to library.
I spent a few days to uderstand this.

This is a old post from when I had recieved the Error-43 file could not be found. In my case I had a drive lettered F:\ F:\ when changing the drive to a single letter F:\ it resolved the problem, so something you might want to take a look at.

    Hi Tamekia,
I am sorry to hear nothing has worked yet. I have looked up some additional information and possible solutions. Follow the steps in this document to perform a level-three uninstall, register the Windows Installer Service, and then reinstall the HP software. An uninstall and reinstall of the software deletes and overwrites any of the files that might cause the error and resets the Windows Installer. HP recommends that you download the latest software from the HP Web site to remove any files that might be causing this error.
Level-three uninstall, and register the Windows Installer Service

  • Quick time movies (.mov) files will not play in Iphoto 11.

Quick time movies (.mov) files will not play in Iphoto 11. The thumbnail of the movie shows but when selected only a exclamation mark appears.  I rebuilt the library, thumbnails, permissions etc. I also found the movie files in the iphoto database intact and working. Please advise.

    You're welcome.
Well believe it or not, that's exactly what the exclamation point means. Search the forum. I've been doing this a while.
Next, I have no interest, commercial or otherwise in Library Manager, I have no shares in the company that makes it. I didn't make it. It's not my software.  You could give those guys a million dollars and I'll get nothing from it. I and other expereinced users have recommended it thousands of times on this forum for this problem. Amazing how often it works. Of course, a quick search would have told you that already.
Another: Believe it or not you can use the Rebuild Function of Library Manager for free. You don't need to purchase it for that purpose.
Y'all have a nice paranoid day now.

  • Recent playback issues with Quick Time for Windows

Hi there. I recently started having choppy playback in Quick Time of
.mov files composed of some footage shot on Sony XDCAM EX. Since I do not have the Sony codec on my PC, I had these .mov files converted to QT files with the H.264 codec by editors who use Final Cut Pro. They play badly, and now, so do all other mov. and MP-4 files for which I always used Quick Time.
    Currenlty have QT 7.62.
Would Quick Time Pro 7 be the answer for a return to normal, fluid playback???
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Keith

It wouldn't make a difference the pro version doesn't enhance the ability of what you can play or how good it plays. It just gives added feature's like being able to convert a .mov to .avi or save a file off a website.

  • File, create PDF, from web page, entire site...questions

I am new to adobe, is this the proper forum for Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro for macintosh?  I think yes...
Created a PDF from:  File, create PDF, from web page, entire site.
Is there a way to print this without the background color?  If you printed from a browser, you could choose not to print the back ground color.  I know exactly the color.
Is there a way to make this PDF look like the web, with no page breakes?  I have tried various things, but the page breaks are always displayed.
Is there a way to create bookmarks on somthing other than the title tag in the web site?  The title tag is an SEO 1 sentence summary of the page, which makes for very long book mark names.
    Thanks for your help.

I don't use v9, but what I would do is click the FILE--PRINT option, print to PDF, and enter to print one page (default is first page)

  • Font is italicized, but only in web browsers

    Hi everyone,
I have a strange problem.  I've started work with a new inherited workstation, and my font is italicized, but only in web browsers.  And I *think* only on text that has default styling.  E.g., forms, textareas, Google search results, and other unstyled text.
Is there a system-wide setting that changes web browser text styling, or have I inherited a bizarre workstation?

One thing to check if it's only in the Browser, like Safari>Preferences>Advanced, does it have a custom css set there...

  • Is there any downside to using a reference type library if I use Time Capsule and will do file management only from within Aperture?

Have done a lot of reading to get prepared to convert to Aperture 3 and have this question regarding setting up my library type.
I'm not a professional -just a heavy user hobbyist.
It appears that the major factors in using reference style is to backup the images with Time Capsule and always do moves or deletes from within the Aperture application.
If my architecture matters here's what I have that may be involved in photo management and editing:
iMac (latest 27" high power version with lots of memory)
Internal 2TB HD where the library is stored
External (FireWire) 2TB HD where the images are stored
External (FireWire) 6TB HD backup drive
In the future an iPad for remote work on images (when/if available) and a Mac laptop (for same remote use)
I see major downside issues to letting the library manage my files - such as inaccessibility (or awkward accessibility) to the images for other programs, and performance issues when the library gets large (thousands of images or 100+ gb in size)
The chief complaints I've seen regarding using a reference mode is the broken link issues created if file management is done outside of Aperture (adds, deletes, moves of files) and the inability to use the Vault function for backup.
One feature that I imagine I'd like to have is maximum integration with Final Cut Pro X and that's one area I haven't seen much on and would be interested to hear about if that integration is affected with the choice of managed vs referenced library types. (I like to produce film clips that are combinations of pics and video and want to be set up so that is done in the easiest fashion when working in FCP X)
I'm sure I've not seen all sides of this issue and would like to see some discussion around this question.
    Thanks to everyone contributing!
    Craig

Goody, Goody, you hit a few of my favorite subjects! Herewith some comments, with the usual caveats - true to the best of my knowledge and experience, others may have different results, YMMV, and I could be wrong.
I run Aperture on two machines:
-- 2007 Mac Pro with 2x2.66 GHz Xeon, 21 GB of RAM, a 5770 GPU, and multiple HD. I have about 11,000 images, taking up 150 GB. (Many are 100 MB TIFF, scanned slides)
-- 2006 Mac Book Pro with 1 2.0 GHz Core Duo, 2 GB of RAM and a 240 GB SSD.
    Two very different machines.
-- Aperture Libraries are all the same - Managed or Referenced. If Managed, then the Master image files are inside the Package, if Referenced, they are outside, and you can have any combination you want. Managed is easier, but Referenced is not hard if you are the least bit careful.
-- While the sheer size of an Aperture Library is not a big issue, the location on disk of the different components can have a tremendous impact on performance.
-- Solid State Drives (SSD) read and write faster than regular Hard Disks (HD) and, what is more important, empty HD read and write much faster than full HD.
-- Aperture speed requires a combination of RAM, CPU, graphics processing unit (GPU) speed, and disk speed. The more RAM you have, the less paging you will see. With enough RAM, the next bottle neck is CPU (speed and cores) and GPU speed. But even then you will still have to fetch an image (longer if you pull the full resolution Master, read and rewrite the Version file, and update the Preview and Thumbs.
    So what works?
-- RAM, RAM, and more RAM. 4 GB will work, but you will page a bit. 8 GB is much faster. On my old MacPro the sweet spot was about 16 GB of RAM.
-- Keep your Library on your fastest (usually internal) drive. Keep that disk as unloaded as possible. How do you keep it unloaded? Either buy BIG, 1 TB+ or move your Masters off onto another disk. The good news here is that as Master files are written only once and never rewritten, speed of this disk, as opposed to the disk that holds the Library, is not important. There is a one second pause as the Master is read into memory and, if you have enough RAM, that is it - the Master will never be paged out. If, on the other hand, you do not have enough RAM, and you do a lot of adjusting at full resolution, then the speed of the disk that holds your Masters will become very important due to paging.
-- I found that I picked up a tiny bit of speed by keeping the Masters on a dedicated disk. Thus, in your configuration, if you can dedicate that 2 TB FW HD to your Masters, you should see very nice performance.
Final notes on backups and archives:
-- One conventional wisdom is that you should make an archive copy of every image file before or as you load them into your system. (Aperture in this case.) This archive is then never touched or deleted.
-- An alternative approach is that you do not keep such an archive, but only the images that you have in your Aperture Library. And when you delete from the Library, you no longer keep a copy anywhere.
    I do the following:
-- Card to Aperture. Card is then kept at least 24 hours until all of my backups have run. (I use three - Time Machine, Clone, and off site.)
-- I do not keep archive copies. If I decide to delete a file, my only recourse is to recover it from Time Machine during the six month cycle of my Time Machine backups. Thereafter, it is lost.
There are merits to both approaches.
Hope this is clear, correct, and responsive to your needs.

  • Have quick time on windows 7 and can not rotate or flip the video sent to me from friends any help on this thanks.

Have a windos usung Quick Time and friends sending videos to me that are sideways and upside down. Any way to flip while watching from Quick Time.
Some are from a MAC computer and can not turn them to watch them the right way. How do i do this thanks.

I have purchased Quicktime Pro and when I use the rotate button under Show Video Properties-Visual Settings, the viewing screen rotates from portrait to landscape but the video itself does not rotate. Any suggestions as I have a lot of unusable video which I want to pull into my video editor.
BTW, my Studio 15 which is a fairly high-end software has successfully rotated previous videos shot with my wifes I-Phone 4 but on these video clips, the rotation works but then does not play. I wonder if it was some setting or problem with my wife's Iphone?

  • Quick Time for Windows 98 please

Been online for hours trying to download something that will play this stupid little animation .mov file that is from a stopmo animator. I really am working hard for what might be only half a minute. Do you still have an older version of your Quick Time that will work on my Windows 98 computer?? Some people cannot afford new computers.

QuickTime 6.5.2 for Windows, which will run under Windows 98, is still available here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime652forwindows.html
As Kirk said, it doesn't have the H.264 codec included in QuickTime 7, but 6.5.2 will play most of the other QuickTime formats.
BTW, a quick search through the Downloads link above turned this up for me in about ten seconds. Just so you know for future; might save you a lot of time waiting for a response. Regards.

  • I can't uninstall quick time on Windows XP

I really messed this whole thing up...I'm trying to run Avid Free DV and it requires an old version of Quick Time so I got the old version and tried to uninstall the version I had but it said that the current QT was on a network that wasn't available to me and it wouldn't let me uninstall it so I got rid of the whole folder (which really messed things up) so now I'm screwed, blued and tatooed (excuse my french) PLEASE SAVE ME!!!

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any QuickTime entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp. Restart the PC, and try another install. Does it go through properly this time?
