Quick time to move on to software that "simply works"

Dear Apple,
I switched to your OS a couple of years ago because it was more stable, faster, and much more usable than Windows. I was happy for a while. But now you are doing your best to change that impression.
Some facts:
- Quicktime is useless. It plays only files that Apple wants it to play. It should be my place to decide what Quicktime can play. I want to decided myself in which format I want to see my videos. And I do NOT appreciate Quicktime for automatically starting to convert my content into another fileformat. You are diminishing the possibilities to work around that issue of yours. Perian does not function under Mavericks. Neither does Flip4Mac. Yes, they will come back. But I am sick of waiting for 3rd party solution for something YOU should solve. Mac claims to be for the creative spirits. So how does creativity go together with more and more limitation, restrictions, deliberate downgrades hidden in upgrades? You are becoming less and less Apple and more and more Microsoft. As for Quicktime - I switched to VLC instead.
- Safari. I use videos a lot. I watch them in the Safari-Browser, too. I am tired of your vendetta against Flash. Every other week I am forced to upgrade the flash player in order to watch flash bases video content in Safari. Yawn. I switched to Chrome instead.
- Itunes. Fix it, fix it, fix it. It is a broken piece of software. It is slow, bulky, inconvenient and inflexible. The only reason why I did not switch yet ist that I am still having an iphone. But Samsung is catching up fast.
Honestly Apple. I like Mac OS. I'd like to keep it that way. So why not find a new balance between shareholder value and customer satisfaction. Your success was built on that.
Don't make me switch again. Fix your software - it isn't that dangerous to your businessmodel if Quicktime was the best player, Safari the most advanced browser and Itunes the sleekes Multimedia-Library out there.

Interesting interpretation.
So any functionality beyond Quicktime's boundaries is garbage disposal? VLC is software to watch pirated content? That is - sorry to say - a VERY weak argument and quite rude to a lot of people who use VLC to deal with the increasingly poor performance of Quicktime. Simply put - I prefer a flexible tool to one that per design limits me. That's all. And just for the record: There is pirated content in mp4 format, too. So please drop that very personal argument and let us focus on the functionality of software topic. I work with video content every day and have to use all kinds for formats. Therefore Quicktime became more and more of an annoyance.
Same goes for Safari. Yes, there are workarounds. But hey, there is better softwar out there that I can use without working around a problem that shouldn't exist in the first place. I do not owe Safari anything. So if it is inferior - I'll drop it. Even though Apple makes it hard to do so - and that increases my wish to get rid of it.
As for iTunes: Come on. It is an SAP based monster. There is no saving it. I agree with you that it is the best one stop shop for media available. But it could be so much better, faster and more convenient.
Again: I switched to Apple because it offered better software. I do not engage in fandom of any kind. I love efficiency, simplicity and enjoy stable systems that have a high degree of usability. Apple still rules this area. But that is no reason not to hint the spots that are simply not up to par. And the three pieces of software simply arent.

  • I'm a Dropbox user and I migrate between my iMac and a Toshiba notebook.  Is there Apple software that will work on the notebook allowing me to open Pages, Numbers or Keynote documents that I've placed in Dropbox?

I'm a Dropbox user and I migrate between my iMac and a Toshiba notebook.  Anyone know if there is Apple software that will work on the Toshiba that will allow me to open Pages, Numbers or Keynote documents when I access them in Dropbox?
Maybe I should just always export from Pages into Word  (and likewise for the other types) before I upload to Dropbox?  I hope not!!

If you don't want to export files and consider the Microsoft formats to be your basic working format, then you need to consider either using MsOffice for Mac or LibreOffice instead of the iWork suite.
You could always run a virtualised OSX on the Toshiba, but I don't think Apple will appreciate me telling you how to do that.

  • Latest Version of Software that Will Work on My Computer

Is there a page I can go to that will look up my computer (or I can input what model it is) and then it will tell me the latest version for all the software that will work on it?
I thought I remembered something like this, but I can't find it.
    Thanks!

Up to 10.4.11 will run on your iBook. Here's the table for older models: Mac OS - Version builds included with computers (since 1998). For Intel models: OS X versions (builds) included with Intel-based Macs.

  • After Quick Time update .mov files will not work in Premier pro.

I have windows 7 and the latest premiere pro. I uninstalled quick time still not working. Other files work fine however I work with a great deal of transparent background videos and now they will not work in Adobe apps. I have looked into solutions but cant find anything for windows. Please point me in the right direction.

If its not working roll back QT.

  • Quick time not streaming properly since software updates

I have recently updated to Safari 4 and at the same time a quicktime update was installed.
Now quicktime just wont stream video properly. I cant even watch Apple's on keynote with it.
BBC iPlayer streams perfectly with no glitches!
Any clues? Makes me feel like quicktime is just an inferior piece of software. It has always given me the most trouble.

    Macintosh HD
    Library\quicktime
    AppleIntermediateCodec.component
    AppleMPEG2Codec.component
These are the only 2 files in here.
Interestingly, for example, when I try to stream the WWDC keynote and scroll towards the end to the new iPhone Ad, it streams perfectly for 10 to 15 seconds before stuttering and turning to gobbledygook. However, when I view the same Ad from within the Apple Website, it streams perfectly on all resolutions. I am fed-up with QuickTime because it has always seemed temperamental when used for streaming.
    Any more ideas anyone?

  • No sound on Quick Time/Flip4Mac Movies

I have QuickTime 7.6.2 and FlipforMac 2.2.3.7 installed on my iMac ( Leopard OS
10.5.8)as well as OS 10.4.11 on my eMac. For some reason, there is no sound available on the former when I play QT/WMV/Flip4Mac although there is no problem with the OS Tiger. I have checked all the settings and Preferences and they are identical on both computers.
The site I use is Scottish Wildlife Trust- Osprey Nest site.

Yes, this is exactly how the AudioMIDI Setup appears on my eMac (which works!) On my iMac,however, there is no "Built-in Audio" option (which seems fixed on the eMac), and instead I am given various options for Built-in input,Built-in output and Internal Microphone/Line-in. I have tried every possible combination but none of them will enable any sound on this site. Also the Volume slider (M) is not activated with any of these settings.
I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that my Airport Wi-fi BT Hub on which my iMac works must have something to do with this problem or the AudioMIDI setup Utility in Mac OS 10.5.8 (Leopard) differs from that on my OS 10.4.11 (Tiger).

  • Has anyone seen a version of CCleaner (Piriform Software) that will work with Mavericks yet?

Looking for CCleaner version supported by Mavericks!

... If I may suggest (to Apple) an effective way to reduce customer concerns would be to define (for non-computer people), those things mentioned as concerns regarding vulnerability. Ex: Which port/s are used by "X" traffic?
Well known TCP and UDP ports used by Apple software products
I had a "Nortan" security add-on a while back. Not to thrilled about it except for the multi-layerd firewall. That at least gave me the IMPRESSION of greater awareness and hence control. True or faulse...
Besides the fact that Norton / Symantec's products run poorly on Macs, an impression of security or control is all it will do. Such impresions are detrimental to actual security due to the false comfort it you may perceive from using products like it.
The functions of a "firewall" are frequently misunderstood. Whoever first came up with that term as it applies to computers either regets it, or should.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it updated with software updates from Apple.
The question you should be asking yourself is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Help needed to create Quik Time VR movies, step by step

    Hello,
    thank you for your attenction.
I need to create Quick time vr movies, and I need to know the exact sequance of steeps to do it, and if the starting point I use is correct.
    1) I shooted a sequence of photos with my digital camera (for example: www.stebianchi.com/quicktimevrhelp/still-photo.jpg).
    2) Then, with photoshop (CS4) I choose: Automate/photomerge and I select all them to joint them in a bigger 360° panoramic one (www.stebianchi.com/quicktimevrhelp/pan.jpg). If, untill here, all is correct, the first question: in photoshop Photomerge layout option, do I have to choose one voice "auto, perspective, cylindrical, spherical, etc..." rather than anoter one of these?
    3) from here, I really need your help.
First of all: the great doubt:
My photos can not cover a spherical panorama, they're only a "ring" around a center (and not a spherical texture). To cover all the surface (or almost all, ok...) of my ambient, do I have to use a wider lens on my camera or there is a different solution (for ex a vertical photomerge?).
    4) Done this, I think I shuold buy a software like Cubic converter, to set and export the QTVR movie. Right?
    Thanks a lot guys,
    all the best!
    Stefano

You can call your local apple store(find one on the home page of apple.com) and they will give you instructions how to convert DVD to iPod. That is what they told me, but from what I heard, you may need more than Quicktime Pro. Just call and ask them, because if you make a manual of how to do it, it could help me a lot.
(I'm looking for a good DVD converter, already know some, beside the internet download ones)

  • Quick Time Pro will not launch

10/04/10: I downloaded Quick Time 7 and purchased a key for Pro. I can open video files with QT7Pro but I cannot launch Quick Time from either the short cut that was created or from the All Programs. The only thing that happens is that the Apple Quick Time logo and name appear in the bottom of the screen as though the program was shrunk down. It will not launch. Right clicking on the icon only provides the capability to "move" "minimuze" or "close." Maximize is grayed out and so is "restore."
I'd like to use the software I purchased to edit my videos and use some of the other features of Quick Time Pro.
What could be the issue? HELP.
    Bill N. in Sarasota, Florida

That sounds a bit like a blown-out QuickTime preference file, Bill.
First we'll try rebuilding the QuickTime.qtp file, to see if that helps with the launch.
Quit QuickTime if the button is currently showing in your Taskbar.
We'll now have to set you up to view hidden files and folders.
    (1) Quit Safari if you have it open
    (2) Go Start > Open.
    (3) In the Organize menu, click Folder and Search Options.
    (4) Click the View tab.
    (5) Make sure that Show hidden files and folders is selected.
    (6) Click OK.
Now look for a QuickTime folder in one of the following two locations (where "UserAccountName" is the name of the user account in which QuickTime isn't launching correctly):
    C:\Users\UserAccountName\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\QuickTime\
    ... or:
    C:\Users\UserAccountName\AppData\LocalLow\Apple Computer\QuickTime\
Drag the entire QuickTime folder out onto your Desktop.
Now launch the QuickTime Player again. (This should rebuild the folder and contained preference files.)
Does the Player launch properly this time? Or do you still get the same trouble?
