Quickcam Messenger Build-In Micro [solved]

Hello together,
I have a problem with my webcam. Since the kernel-2.6.20 i can't use the internal microphone of my webcam. I run another machine with Ubuntu 7.04 and i have the same problem. It seems that that they changed something with USB-Audio-Devices in 2.6.20, because on my Ubuntu-machine my USB-Soundcard didn't work anymore (with Arch and 2.6.20 - no problem). I hope someone can help me.
Thanks, stonerl
P.S. Sorry for my bad English.

i dunno if this'll help, but you can try upgrading to a 2.6.21 kernel
raeven@Lux32 ~]# p -Ss kernel | grep "/kernel26"
unstable/kernel26mm 2.6.21.rc7.mm2-1
current/kernel26 2.6.21.3-1
extra/kernel26ck 2.6.21.ck2-1
extra/kernel26suspend2 2.6.21.1-2

  • USB device (Logitech QuickCam Messenger) stopped working (SOLVED)

    Hey there,
I have a logitech quickcam messenger, which used to work perfectly 2 days ago. I updated my system yesterday and this morning, but I tried the cam again only now, and neither cheese nor webcamstudio work anymore (it never worked in skype since I moved from Mint to Arch a few weeks ago, but that was easily (and better) addressed by starting cheese and then using desktop sharing in Skype)
    The webcam is recognized

cheese only shows a black window and spits out :

webcamstudio hangs when I try to start the preview and its output is :

SOLVED : really stupid problem, but well... I'll completement my post and leave it for anybody who might hit the same problem :
dmesg looked like this when after I started cheese :
    [ 3815.848011] usb 1-1.4: unlink qh8-3008/ec236980 start 0 [1/2 us]
    [ 3815.848995] gspca: found int in endpoint: 0x82, buffer_len=8, interval=10

[ 3816.917377] gspca: bandwidth not wide enough - trying again
[ 3816.938010] gspca: no transfer endpoint found
The (not so obvious) solution was to connect the webcam directly to the computer and not through a USB hub. I have no idea why it used to work and suddenly stopped, but it works again now.
sorry to take up your time, in case I did.

  • [Solved] Quickcam Messenger and Skype

So I have installed skype from multilib
    multilib/skype 2.1.0.81-4 [18.28 MB] [installed]
P2P software for high-quality voice communication
    and also the qc-usb-messenger package
    community/qc-usb-messenger 1.8-12 [0.05 MB] [installed]
QuickCam Messenger & Communicate driver for Linux
My modules section in /etc/rc.conf looks like
    MODULES=(fuse modprobe qc-usb-messenger !gspca)
guvcview, cheese, xawtv and kopete show video footage from the webcam. skype does not.
I have tried starting skype with these commands
    LD_PRELOAD=/opt/lib32/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
    LD_PRELOAD=/opt/lib32/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skype
    LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skype
    LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
The device shows. But it just doesn't pick up video

    I was following the webcam page - http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Web … our_webcam
The guessing came when that didn't work
In any event, that raises a new issue
    $ LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
skype: error while loading shared libraries: libv4l1.so.0: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
edit1: Will search for the skype page now
edit2: seems the skype page maybe outdated given multilib skype.

  • Logitech Quickcam Messenger [046d:08f0]

I was extremely surprised when the kernel gave me the illusion of plug and play, using the gspca driver for this device.
Unfortunately the gspca driver only supports the 046d:08da cam with the same name.
It looks like the actual driver to be used is the one at http://mag.cx/messenger/ , which is prepackaged in community under the name qc-usb-messenger.
    Unfortunately, despite seemingly detecting everything...

Does a wrong ioctl mean it's not the right driver?
Is it common that devices with the same id are in fact different devices?

  • Logitech Quickcam Messenger no dice

So I have this logitech quickcam messenger, and suprise, its not working.
Anyway, i plug it in (USB), and several modules load, /dev/video0 is created, but other than that, no functionality.
Mostly when i try to run any video app I get (running motion):
[1] Failed to open video device /dev/video0: Device or resource busy
I can run cat /dev/video0 and get a lot of output streaming out, so thats a good sign. But I wonder is the device really busy or is the driver screwed up?
I'm using the quickcam_messenger module that autoloads when i plug it in.
I've also tried qcmessenger and gspca_zc3xx modules to no avail.

Old topic, but case is up to date.
I was struggling with my own older Logitech camera Quickcam Pro. Apparently I bought the wrong one, but finally I set it up with limited functionality.
Of course the problem was the driver. No pwc, no linux-uvc and not even spca5xx. I had to compile new driver module with nw802. Actually mine was nw801, but I just had to edit one file before compilation, apply some patches, insert this module and now it works.
Please do some researches and specify correct driver for your webcam using ProductID. Logitech webcams have varied set of drivers. :-)

  • First time with Arch, minimal build: little niggles [solved]

Ok, I've been using *Buntu based Distros for a while now, this is my first time taking the plunge with Arch - chosen because it is a build in what you want distro.
I've wanted a minimal build install for a printserver project, this week I took the plunge with an old laptop.
I have it doing the printserver part, but there are some minor niggles. Let me detail what I have installed and what I want it to be able to do, before I detail these.
    Arch Base install with:
    CUPS
    LXDE
    Leafpad
    Xorg Intel video drivers.
    smartmontools
    firefox
WPA_Supplicant,as this system is to be a wireless printserver.
What I want this system to do:
Run most of the time in shell, no DE running. (This keeps it cool and quiet, as it is in a bedroom)
Only run the DE when startx is called, and have the DE able to be shut down without restarting the server.
serve printjobs from the moment it boots and connects to the wireless.
    What it currently does.
    Boot up, wait for login
When login, require WPA_supplicant, dhcpcd and Cupsd to be initialised before it can serve printjobs.
If DE is required, Xorg must be started in tty1, startlxde ran in tty2, and then manually switch to tty7 for the DE.=
I have a script to call when i login which starts WPA_Supplicant, dhcpcd, and cupsd in that order.
I would really like the interface to have a staticip but i dont know how to do that without the handy graphical tools that ubuntu provides.
Please can you help, at least point me in the right direction with these niggles? I have learned a lot about what is required to get a basic DE up and running, and im sure with your help I will learn more.
Last edited by Rhiadratech (2011-05-20 23:07:52)

Ok, so I've gotten Cups and wicd autostarting, set the static ip from my router because else it wasnt getting DNS etc details and left it asking for that by dhcp.
Still having issues with the DE
    pedro_sland wrote:

I run xfce4 sometimes. I just run startxfce4 and it starts Xorg and displays the DE. I think that startx runs twm which you probably don't want so you might want to take a look at that. startx has a script it runs somewhere (I forget where but the wiki will know). When I'm done with xfce I just log out and it exits.
For me, this isnt working. startlxde on its own just goes to
    [root@yomiko ~]#
in tty1, and leaves me with a blank screen when i switch to tty7
I literally must call Xorg in one tty, startlxde in another and then manually shift to tty7 to see it.
    startx itself:
    -bash: startx: command not found
Even Xorg isnt happy being called on its own, that too goes to a blank screen, though it does at least switch to tty7
With Xorg called in tty1, when i call startlxde in tty2 i get dbug errors from pcmanfm though these seem to be just it informing its detected the HDD partitions.
there is a grumble early on in the process, before the debug errors, saying:
    Importing pynotify failed, notifications disabled.
Finally, I did add the line to .xinitrc the LXDE page in the wiki said to to allow startx to run:
    exec ck-launch-session startlxde
This is the only line in this file.
Currently running as root... I'm not going to complicate matters by adding a user until im sure i got it all running as root, bad practice or not!
Edit: A friend helped me solve it.
The package xorg-xinit held the startx script that was missing. I now get LXDE when i want and only when I want.

  • New Desktop Build - Few Issues [Solved]

Hey guys just completely upgrade my desktop... board, processor, ram, graphics card etc.
    installed everything just fine.
Went with lxdm and xfce4 as my LDM and GUI. Installed the latest catalyst drivers using the wiki to support my ati radeon hd 7850 card.
1, I have no xfce4-panel whatsoever. If i go to the terminal and go to start it, it says it is already running an instance. If i kill it, and the try running it again, it still says i am running the instance. If i go the settings for xfce4-panel, it hangs and then errors out "Failed to show the preferences dialog"
If i run the panel as root from the terminal, it works... so i just have the issue with my normal user i log into X with.
    2. fglrx is definitely not loading. I followed all the instructions in the AMD Catalyst wiki, and am having issues. I use Vi0L0's repo... and am using catalyst-hooks (from the catalyst repo) which contains the latest and greatest, including beta drivers. I have xorg 1.14 installed because it is now compatible with those particular drivers... and have even rolled back to 1.13 just to test. I have done this before with the legacy drivers for an older card, and didn't have an issue.
If i run fglrxinfo in terminal this is he output:
Error of failed request:  BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request:  154 (ATIFGLEXTENSION)
Minor opcode of failed request:  66 ()
Serial number of failed request:  14
Current serial number in output stream:  14
i also get no output from lsmod | grep fglrx
    3. I cannot start the AMD Catalyst Control panel.
when i run amdcccle from the terminal i receive this:
amdcccle: error while loading shared libraries: libQtGui.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I already installed qt and all is dependencies, and am pretty sure that's what i did on my old build.
Please any help would be appreciated, as im trying to get this PC up and running properly. Thanks!

Last night when installing arch on a friend's machine I had the same problem with XFCE. At first, I thought I may have done something wrong during the install because we did a fresh install on the same machine just a few days ago and had no issue yet it popped up last night (again, with a fresh install) So, I think there may have been an update to one of the xfce4 packages over the last few days to cause this issue. The only way I could get around this was to log in as root (during which the panels worked fine) and then log in as my normal user. I still got an error that the panels were in kiosk mode, but it seems to be holding my changes.

  • New build of Snort [solved]

Has anyone had any luck recently trying to upgrade the snort package in extra?
I've been trying to enable postgresql support in snort, so I downloaded the snort PKGBUILD using the ABS. However, even without changing anything the build will not work because the links are outdated. Here's the relevant bug report (although focusing on mysql support)

Here is my updated PKGBUILD (http://gist.github.com/585174), but it won't compile and I'm not sure why. Here's the end of the output from makepkg:

I'm not sure why it's not compiling because I don't see any errors. If you want the full output from makepkg or anything let me know. Also I needed to register for a snort sourcefire account to download the (semi) updated snort rules.

I found out the problem. There is an error in the community PKGBUILD. There is only one bar before the return 1 when there should be two on line 41 of the PKGBUILD. I plan to file a bug report on this.
    install -D -m644 ${srcdir}/snort.conf.d ${pkgdir}/etc/conf.d/snort | return 1
    install -D -m644 ${srcdir}/snort.conf.d ${pkgdir}/etc/conf.d/snort || return 1
Unfortunately to even get this to run requires you to sign up on the sourcefire website to download the week-old community rules. Also the source tarball does not have a nice name, it is something like snort.org/dl/116 rather than a nice version including the version number.

  • Compile flags disturbe building of package [solved]

    Hi.
I have my compile flags set in makepkg.conf, and every package was building ok till now. Yesterday I tryed to build Sphinx with yaourt, but the build stoped when building libsphinxclient. I think it has something to do with the compiler flags set in makepkg.conf. When it builds with yaourt:
    /bin/sh ./libtool --mode=compile --tag=CC gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I. -march=athlon64 -O2 -pipe -c -o sphinxclient.lo sphinxclient.c
and the build stops after that (this does not give the error, but it doesn't build some libraries needed afterwards).
When I build it manually, the command differs:
    /bin/sh ./libtool --mode=compile --tag=CC gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I.     -g -O2 -c -o sphinxclient.lo sphinxclient.c
The ./configure for the manuall build is the same as from the PKGBUILD
This is the whole build process for libsphinxclient from yaourt:
    make[1]: Entering directory `/tmp/yaourt-tmp-krt/aur-sphinx/sphinx/src/sphinx-0.9.8.1/api/libsphinxclient'
    /bin/sh ./libtool --mode=compile --tag=CC gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I. -march=athlon64 -O2 -pipe -c -o sphinxclient.lo sphinxclient.c

    /bin/sh ./libtool --mode=link --tag=CC gcc -g -O2 -o test test.o .libs/libsphinxclient.a
    gcc -g -O2 -o test test.o .libs/libsphinxclient.a
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/krt/Desktop/sphinx-0.9.8.1/api/libsphinxclient'
In yaourt a whole block of output is skipped after the second line, and it continues with the compiling of test.c:
    gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I. -march=athlon64 -O2 -pipe -c test.c
Since test.c need's libsphinxclient.a and it doesn't exist (it would have been compiled in the skiped part (like in the manually compiled section)), the build isn't successful.
NOTE: I don't know much about compiling, it's just my observation.
Why doesn't it work with the compile flags set?

Well, it appears that the package doesn't build with multiple concurrent build jobs.
Try adding the following above the line beginning with "./configure" and see if it then builds correctly:
    export MAKEFLAGS="-j1"
On a side note, I've found -j2 to work perfectly for dual core systems. I've definitely seen -j(number of cores)+1 being suggested elsewhere, but I can't see why -j(number of cores) isn't equally suitable or even more correct.

  • Someone with x86_64 please try to build handbrake-svn [SOLVED]

I've been going nuts trying to build this package on my x86_64 system:  http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=29320
See the errors I posted in the AUR.  Basically, it builds just fine on a i686 chroot but not on my native x86_64 machine.
    1) Can someone with an x86_64 machine please try to build it and let me know if it errors out or completes successfully?
    2) Any thoughts why it would fail on one arch but work just fine on the other?
EDIT: Nevermind... problem wasn't with the arch at all, it was with my /tmp having a noexec mount option!

It builds on my x86_64 machine.  The dependencies I didn't have initially installed but that were downloaded and installed after issuing 'makepkg -s': yasm-1.0.1-1, libsigsegv-2.6-1,  texlive-bin-2010.1-4,  texlive-core-2010.19888-2

  • Quickcam Messenger, output is black

    Hi guys,
I installed Arch Linux (2.6.28-ARCH) yesterday, together with KDE 4.2. I knew the driver I need for my webcam is built into the kernel, but it does not output anything (black). I am in the video group, and the drivers are loaded. When I try to test my webcam in Kopete, the image turns black, but the LED on my camera is lit.
Does anyone have a solution for this?
    Thanks in advance
    EDIT:
I have just tried aMSN, and the webcam works (V4L2). What can be the cause of the problem that it's not working in Kopete?

    Hi,
how did you get the webcam to work?
I just got the same cam from a friend because I need it to test something for a small university project but i cannot get any application to work with that camera.

(same message repeated a few times)
"vlc v4l:// :v4l-vdev=/dev/video0" results in "[00000409] v4l demux error: cannot grab" and the OpenCV examples abort with the following error:

(Sorry for "hijacking" this thread, but it seems mostly solved and Davey might have a hint on what to ;-) )

  • DJ Queuing (Zen Micro) - Solved (thanks fred_be930

At the moment, you can't queue the entire contents of "Most Popular" and "Rarely Heard" tracks directly, whereas you can queue "Album of the Day" and "Random Play All" by just pressing Play or select on the Touchpad.
I would like to see the same for "Most Popular" and "Rarely Heard".
So just to reiterate, I would like to be able to press Play with the Zen Micro DJ over "Most Popular" and "Rarely Heard" and have the entire list go into the queue. Not have to queue them individually.

Actually, I think there is to some extent a workaround. (tested on .02.05)
As you indicated, when you select "Album of the Day" and "Random Play All", those songs are played. Actually, your current queue is wiped out, and the new songs are queued and played. I don't think you can add these "DJ" lists to an existing queue.
Anyway, the same is possible for the other 2, except it's not (entirely) intuiti've.
Just select e.g. "Most popular" (tap on the slider, because "play" on the item doesn't work). You arri've in a list of 20 songs. Now you can use the "options" button to enqueue them one by one or selecti'vely.
BUT IF YOU PRESS PLAY at this stage (on any song), the 20 songs are enqueued, and play is started at the song that was highlighted when you pressed.
Same for "Rarely Heard". I think the same holds when you are in the Library > Album > song list.
Now if Creative would like to transfer a small 6-digit $-sum to my account for taking care of this firmware enhancement for them, that's ok ;-)

  • Using Logitech QuickCam Messenger with Tiger/Classic 9...

I just received this webcam from my daughter and found on installing the disk that it will only work with OS9....I have the Classic 9 installed on this Powerbook, but is this the same as OS9...as when I try to intall it in the Applications OS9 it will not proceed...is there another way to do this ?

What sig says is good. However, sometimes Classic is not the same as being booted natively to OS9, which your computer is incapable of doing. I don't know about this camera but true OS9 items sometimes need access to the computer hardware and basic resources on a fundamental level. In Classic it is really OSX that is running the system and the interface to the basic features is not the same as when OS9 is running the show.
Are you running the installer from inside Classic? If not, that might be a problem. Otherwise it is possible the installer is doing a check for which operating system is running the computer and finding it is not OS9. Workarounds might depend upon the sophistication of the installer. Sometimes an installer just copies files out of a folder and puts them where they belong. In that case you could just copy them out yourself. On the other end of the scale it may be a compressed archive package installer, in which case if you wish to experiment further you would have to find an OS9 computer, install on there, then copy the components out and copy them into the correct places on your OSX machine.
