Quickest way to get up to speed on Final Cut Pro X

My boss wants me to get started on a new project the day FCP X hits the App store. All my previous experience is non-Apple when it comes to video, so I am wondering if I could perhaps get a bit of a head start by 'practicing' in another of Apple's video applications (iMovie '11? Final Cut?).
What are your thoughts on this? Will it be worthwhile to spend time with the 'older' apps? Please keep in mind that I have had training with other apps, so it's not about learning video production in general.
Appreciate any input, thanks!

There's truth in both our comments but why should anyone pay out for FCE when FCP X is only $299 ?
Incidentally, if you haven't already seen any of the promo blurb, take a look at these two 25 minute videos of the official demo.
http://www.macrumors.com/2011/04/13/video-of-final-cut-pro-x-introduction-now-av ailable/
They will blow your mind away and you will not be able to resist parting with the $299 in a couple of months.

Is you're autosave folder on a drive that's not formatted macosextended?  You set the location for the autosave folder in system settings which can be found in the FinalCutPro Menu.  Also, the best way to trash fcp preferences is using Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager

  • What do you use to speed up final cut pro x on my macbook pro early 2011?

what do you use to speed up final cut pro x on my macbook pro early 2011?

I  don't use anything to speed up FCP X on your MBP.
Seriously we need statistical info on why you think it needs speeding up.
Poor performance is often associated with incorrect usage, lots of other apps open or a hard drive that is more than 75% full or fragmented.
Ideally all the media should be stored on an external hard drive and not the MBP's.

  • How can I get MPEG-2 video into Final Cut Pro X?

Hello!  I have several MPEG-2 video files on which I need to perform some edits.  When I tried to import them into Final Cut Pro, I learned that Final Cut Pro can't import MPEG files.  Okay, so I went into QuickTime and exported one as 720p.  20 minutes later, I had a video that I could load in FCP.  Awesome.  Except that when I watched the video, the audio was waaaaaaaay out of sync.  So, is there a different way I could get this MPEG-2 video into a format that FCP will like while keeping video and audio together?
I would keep trying a few different things without direction, but these videos are like 90 minutes long and the conversion process is lengthy.
    Thanks!

Although I looked up the equipment, I couldn't find what kind of MPEG2. I'm assuming program stream.
I don't know why you had the sync problem with QT. You could bring it into FCP and detach the audio and manually line it up it's off by a constant amount.
Or you can use MEG Streamclip. You will also need the playback component, which is $20. Follow the instructions on the Squared 5 site to install it. Streamclip is worth having even if you don't use it this time around.
    Good luck.

  • Best way to export from Motion 2 into Final Cut Pro 5, working in DV?

I am working in DV in Final Cut Pro 5, and I would like to get the best quality from anything I bring in from Motion 2 into Final Cut Pro 5, I keep hearing use the Animation codec. I would like to hear from the Panel of experts.
    Happy Thanksgiving,
    Sebastian

The Best way is to round-trip from FCP. Or simply import the .motn file directly into FCP. If you require an alpha channel and for some reason don't want to bring the .motn file in, Animation with millions+ for the colors (+ is the alpha channel) will work, But if you just want straight DV, you should export a DV file.

  • Speeding up Final Cut Pro X workflow with nikon d7100

    Hi everybody,
I recently bought a Nikon d7100. I've shot some footage and now I want to edit it in Final Cut Pro X. I know FCPX doesn't support the H264 codec natively so I converted it to ProRes 422(LT) with mpeg Streamclip and Compressor. Works perfectly, but my problem/question is as follows:
Doing it this way takes way too long. Is there a faster way to do this? I used other camera's in the past and usually there was a plug-in to do this within FCPX itself.
Does anyone have tips to speed up my workflow?
    All help is appreciated! Thanks

    Hi Tom,
Yes I've tried, but it didn't work.
It works when I copy all the files from the SD-card to my hard drive, but then I see blocks/pixels in the video as shown on the picture below.
Thanks for your help thusfar. Hopefully you have an other suggestion for me

  • Speeding Up Final Cut Pro

I just purchased my first Mac about 2 months ago and I want to speed up rendering. I am taking a class in Final Cut Pro at a local college and learning a lot. I have been using ULEAD (Windows Based 32 bit)for about 2-3 years and have a lot of raw AVI files I need to convert to MOV. Most of the files are 1440 X 1920 resolution. Is there a way to speed up the conversion? At the rate it is converting I am better off just uploading the footage off of the DV tapes. It is taking 20 minutes to render 5 minutes worth of footage. With 6 gigs of 800MHz RAM I would think it should smoke through rendering.
    Clark

Clark: What are you rendering to? I mean, are you manipulating these clips or just trying to play them--no filters, effects, slo-mo etc.? If you are required to render only placing them in the timeline you may want to change your timeline settings. Are you ouputting HD? What is the CODEC? (AVI is a container, like QT, not a CODEC.) Use "Item Properties / Command+9" to find out. Set the timeline settings as close to your original footage as possible--ideally matching exactly (in which case there is no rendering whatsoever).
And, in general, the CPU and GPU are going to speed up your renders. Big RAM certainly does't hurt you, but lots of RAM on a slow machine won't help much. You could also look into QMaster if you have extra machines available.

  • How to get the HPX files into Final Cut Pro 7?

    Hey.
I have a small crisis. Hope someone can help as quickly as possible?! Thank you
I'm working on my bachelor project, and has borrowed a Panasonic HPX 170, and will cut in Final Cut Pro 7. Now I have all the files on a hard drive, and they are MFX files.
    - How do I get them into FCP?
Many thanks for all your help!

    Thanks
But what if the clips are already on my iMac via the hard disk? What you write, is through the camera right?
I've tried to get the files by the camera into FCP, but it did not. It can not find the camera.
    Thanks for your answer

  • Best way to get film aspect ratio in final cut

i have edited all my footage and want for the best way to export in film aspect ratio. im not what that is but i think around 2.2.
can someone help me in the best way to do this
how do professionals do it for movie trailers which areuploaded online
    thanks

Actually, it was 2.66:1 when it first came about, but when an optical soundtrack was added to the format the AR was reduced to 2.35:1. This was altered later to 2.39:1, which is the current standard. People often use the ratios 2.35:1, 2.39:1, and 2.40:1 interchangeably. Unless talking about a movie made between 1958 and 1970, Cinemascope means 2.39:1.

  • How to apply 3 way color correction to multiple clips in Final Cut Pro?

I have multiple clips from the same time and space footage that need color correction. I have worked on one of the clips and found the settings I like.
Is there a way to apply that correction to other clips without starting from scratch on each one?
    Thanks!

SoCal (above) listed one way. Another way you can do it if you like the color correction that you have done and want to save it, you can click the picture of the hand in the color correction tab and drag it into the browser. This saves that specific arrangement of colors, highlights, etc.
Also, this might be a little easier but instead of pasting attributes and right clicking you can just grab the hand (that I just talked about) and drag it onto the clips you want to apply the same color correction to. The hand is located in the color correction tab (in viewer) and is under the "numeric" button.
Note: All of your clips in your timeline will have different contrasts, brightness, colors, etc. NO clip is going to have the EXACT same attributes as another. It doesn't matter how expensive and professional your camera is. Every shot is different whether you are using artificial lighting or the natural lighting. Having that said, you will probably still need to adjust your different clips a little bit to make them look like they are in the same room at the same time. Hopefully if your lucky or had perfect lighting for all of your shots, you will not have to do much messing around with your contrast, brightness, etc. Good luck!

  • What is best way to handle editing long clips in Final Cut Pro?

I had to import some footage which contained timecode breaks as one continuous clip. I now have several ultra-long clips. What's the best way to chop out the bits I need and place them in a separate bin for the edit?

    Hi -
Put the clip in the viewer. Mark an In point where you want your subsection to start and an outpoint where you want it to end. Type Command + U to make a subclip in you browser.
    Repeat as necessary.

  • Is there any way to remove a glare spot with final cut pro 4?

I have several glare spots from my lights that are
distracting. How can I remove those?

Depending on the background and If the shot is static and the glare spots are small you might be able to add the same clip over top of itself, cut a hole in the top clip (using a garbage matte) and move the bottom clip so it's not showing the glare. Then feather the edges of the matte.
    Crude, but sometimes works.
Could also try playing with the 3 way color corrector filter.

  • Where can I get a free trial of Final Cut Pro 7?

I'm looking to buy Final Cut, but hear that 7 is better than 10. I'd like to try them both before I buy.

I don't think Final Cut Pro 7 is available anymore.
After using both, I personally think FCP 10 is better, so it'll probably be safe to buy it.
The trial of FCP 10 is here.

  • TS1233 How do I get chapter markers for iDVD from Final Cut Pro X?

It seems like a tremendous short-coming that Final Cut Pro X doesn't allow for chapter markers that can be used in iDVD or DVD Pro. Surely there is some way to get used-defined markers from Final Cut Pro X or at least re-define the Final Cut Pro X markers in the DVD authoring applications. Does anyone know how to do this?

I have decided to say that my problem is solved by the work-a-rounds that have been submitted. I STILL don't like the fact tha Apple has decided that DVD's are a thing of the past and therefore (chapter) markers are of no use. That may be true is the publishing world of YouTube, Vimeo, etc. but it certainly NOT true for many of us advanced hobbyists that still like distribution on DVD's to our friends or a more localized (private) community -- especially to those who are not computer literate. If Apple wants to exclude us from their customer base, I suggest that base will become even smaller than their competitors who still have chapter markers in their products. I'll get off my soapbox now. . .
