Quicklook doesn't show PDF files

Quicklook does not show PDF files and Preview doesn't open PDF files. When I select file => open, all PDF files are grey and cannot be selected. In Finder I select a PDF file and press CMD-i. In the information window I select open with Preview, but nothing will changed. PDF files can only be opened with Adobe Acrobat. When I drop a PDF file from finder to safari, the PDF file will be visible in safari. When I select "open in preview" in safari, preview doesn't show the pdf file. I can see an error in the console "CoreSercviceUIAgent Error -60005 creating authorization". qlmanage -r and qlmanage -r chase doesn't help.

Nautilus doesn't preview sound files

Hi everyone.
Why "preview sound files" isn't working in Gnome 2.12.2? Do you know if I need some add-on?

First make sure esd is installed
pacman -S esd
, and make sure esd is running on startup ( Desktop -> Preferences -> Multimedia system selector (if it doesn't exist look for something with multimedia or sound, i have Gnome 2.14 and those things have changed AFAIK) -> Check "turn on sound"
now install mpg321
pacman -S mpg321
Now logout/login (or reboot) and it should work

IOS doesn't preview .docx documents properly if they have been edited with Pages

Create or edit an existing word document (.docx format) with the latest pages on IOS. Preview the document in any IOS app (say, the Dropbox app or mail the document to yourself and preview in ios mail). Every line in the document will be ruled (more than underline--the line goes all the way across the page width). When you look at the same document with any app that can open and view .docx (the new Pages, which converts to pages format of course, or Documents to Go, which opens .docx natively), the document displays properly. Also, if you open the exact same document on a Mac using Pages or Word, you won't see the problem.
This is not consistent. In a trivial 3 line document I could not reproduce this. In a moderately sized document of 6 pages, my editing change in Pages was to format 6 lines as bulleted. This caused the problem.
Certainly a bug in either Pages or in the way IOS renders .docx files throughout the system. It's minor but it would be nice to fix. Probably not worth Apple complaining about use of Word after they made a huge todo about really achieving compatibility with Word in the latest release of iwork.

When you open pages in Preview you can also get the same effect on an imac.
Articles sent as docx and opened in windows either arrive blank or only display the information between the lines. This is a big screw-up by Apple which they don't appear to have an answer for, and I find it annoying that I had to pay Apple Support to find this out.
Posting off CVs for jobs has resulted in my applications being lost because of this quirk.

Does Pages index/preview .docx files?

I know it reads not saves docx, but does it support index (spotlight) and preview (quicklook) it?
Also what about xlsx/pptx? I assume it's same pattern?

Preview/QuickLook is a function of the OS, not Pages or Numbers or Keynote. Spotlight is also not part of the iWork apps. And, yes, you can QuickLook Office x files & Spotlight should index them.

All pdf attachments can be previewed inside MS Outlook by installing same plug-in. By using Adobe Reader, all pdf attachments can be previewed separately (i.e. downloading). However the need is call to export outlook emails to pdf with attachments, you can go through an automated app. A standalone application that I used does not require MS Outlook and Adobe Acrobat any more to export Outlook emails to pdf with attachments.

I'm trying to e-mail music scores and audios, but I receive an error message saying Preview doesn't recognize the file format, regardless whether I use .mus, .pdf, or .mp3. I haven't come across Preview or this problem before. Any suggestions?

Firstly, your country is detemined by several factors, including your phone's regional settings, your SIM card and your NokiaAccount settings, if you used this phone whilst abroad then you may need to check that your regional and account settings are up to date since you have arrived in Canada.
For services like Gigs, you should also ensure that the MixRadio app has access to your phone's GPS location as well as the main location being on in the phone settings. To check this, as well as Location being turned on in the phone settings, in MixRadio itself go to Settings>Location>On:
The concern with favourites may also be related to location, if the music from certain artists is available in Canada but not where the service might think you are, availability of content may vary from region to region.
If all settings in both the phone, your Nokia Account and the MixRadio app are correct, we may have to investigate deeper.
It is impossible to comment on your camera without seeing it, you cold have the phone checked by Nokia Care locally, but of course if it was supplied in Europe it will be covered by the European Limited Warranty which is not valid in Canada.

Preview doesn't show JPG files

I keep having problems viewing JPG files in Preview. The image displays in the Finder, it displays in the thumbnail view for 'Downloads" and it will even appear in the sidebar for Preview if I choose to show the sidebar, but it does not appear in the Preview main window.
I tried deleting the com.apple.Preview.plist file as recommended in an old thread, but it didn't help.

Problem with Quicklook - Issue Previewing Audio Files

Hi,
I have an intermittent problem with Quicklook and in particular audio files (MP3 and AAC). Quicklook works most of the time and plays the audio file, but if I query one file after another quicklook (usually) stops working and just displays the file icon with no playback options.
I love the feature, but it's annoying it fails to work. The files that fail can be quick looked later, so I don't think it's a problem with the files I'm trying to query.
Any ideas why this is happening? I've tried to repair permissions but to no avail.
Any idea if this 'bug' is fixed in 10.5.3?

I also get errors saying "[QL ERROR] 'Creating thumbnail' timed out".
So QL is going belly up on certain files. I encoded some M4a files and QL also crashed according to the log. Why is this? If the files are encoded at wider settings than the usual iTunes files, does QL just refuse? If the file is downloaded, could it be fragmented and this is causing it? According to my log, QL is just crashing again and again trying to create thumbnails for whole folders of audio files.

404 in Document Explorer when opening .docx file

In WebCenter Portal: Spaces 11g PS5 I have a page with a Document Explorer task flow.
In the folder shown I have Wiki documents, which when clicked open in the task flow and can be edited etc.
There is a .docx file in there as well, but when I click to open it, a 404 error is shown in the task flow.
The URL that was attempted to access is:

this doesn't work. I'm mainly puzzled about the skin, language and time zone information in there.
The URL on the Content Server would be:

which works, so the required components are working fine.

This is normal behaviour in WebCenter. WebCenter isn't that bright on that area. It expects UCM and WebCenter be available on the same host/port. So WebCenter will just use the host and port from your current session and append /cs/.... in order to retreive the document.
In order to get this resolved you need to use OHS and configure both Spaces and UCM in the oHS. You can get some information about this config on my blog: http://www.yonaweb.be/enable_ucm_check_in_profiles_webcenter_ps3_0
I thought this problem had been resolved in PS5. You sure you are using PS5 (11.1.1.6) and not PS4 (11.1.1.5)?

QuickLook+GarageBand no preview after update

Hi to all
On my macbook pro 2.2ghz , after 10.5.2 update , Quicklook doesn't show any previews of GarageBand files.
I try to re-open projects in GB and saved them with iLife previews option, inside output files .band in Contents> Output i see all data for QuickLook , a screenshot of the score, an audio bounce aiff, and a .plist,they seems ok.
Any idea?

QuickLook not working with eps files

My hard drive started to die late last year and I got it cloned. But now that I have a new hard drive, I can't preview eps files with QuickLook (holding down the space bar). I tried downloading this plugin http://www.eternalstorms.at/utilities/epsqlplg/ but it didn't work. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I work at a printing company and I deal with a lot of eps files every day. It's really frustrating not being able to preview eps files and having to open every single one. I'd love to be able to get the preview feature back. I can preview everything else, just not eps files.

From a scripting level, ID doesn't see EPS as all vector, so I am unsure why it would be unable to differentiate during link updates. If I place a vector EPS and a bitmap EPS and do:

only one will have an effective ppi.
I suppose you could script around this irregularity by running a script that basically set all EPS with an effective PPI to 100% veritical and horizontal scale after you have scaled them correctly. Something like:

Corrupted .docx file. Word 2007. Can't open the document. Tags mismatch. Help?

The Office Open XML file *.docx cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents.
Details: The name at the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag.

Hmm, I guess I should give some background info and what I've tried so far, right?
The document is in word 2007, Windows 7. Last night, I was in a hurry, and got a lot of things open. I was opening the document to do a few quick spontaneous revisions, but it was so laggy and I was late for an appointment, so I was feeling panicky
and frustrated. In hindsight, it probably wasn't the best option to just force shut the PC down cause word stopped responding in the middle of opening the document. Still, while I'm no Sherlock, I knew stopping it while it's in the middle of saving the document
would bebad, I didn't think stopping it while opening the document (and not really modifying the document at all, at least that was what I thought before), could have drastic consequences! The document's quite
large, a few hundred words, and about 500 or so pages. It's this really big project I was doing at work, for months now really, and because it's somewhat business confidential in nature, I can't exactly share it freely, or I would've uploaded a copy, sorry.
Anyway, I woke up this morning and opened it, and the error came up. By the way, the document was saved in a 2TB external hard with a few disk errors in the past, if that helps, even if I'm pretty much sure its not a problem with the hard. The error
came up... and yeah. I first made a copy, which I've been trying everything on, in case I do end up making things worse. I have no previous versions of it, just a relatively very old backup. Anything less than 80% recovery would set me back weeks with a wage
cut. The good news is that I was able to open the document in WordPad, managing to recover the first 287 pages (131,543 words), with no errors or data loss, and saved it in a separate file. Apparently, according to information I obtained later, MSWord tends
to not open at all when it encounters an error, but Wordpad tends to stop reading the rest of the code once it encounters an error. So, naturally, I assumed (so correct me if I'm wrong), that behind a few sentences I might lose due to the error, the rest could
also be salvageable. I then looked up the problem all over the internet. Read a microsoft article on troubleshooting/recovering corrupted documents (Open & Repair, Draft Mode, Creating Link, Recover text from any file converter, etc). No dice.
I first saw a similar question on answers.microsoft, and tried to use Tony Jollan's Rebuilder, macros enabled and all. Sadly, no luck.
I managed to make my first breakthrough when I found out that .docx was just a .zip file, and could be renamed as such, with the document.xml extracted and manually fixed using an XML editor (not that I knew how to do that, but I was desperate and
willing to learn). So, made another copy, changed extensions, and tried to specifically extract the document.xml. I believe that it is the main body text, right? That is the only thing really necessary for me, since everything I've done so far is entirely
spartan, with no fancy fonts, formatting, header/footer/notes, media objects, formulas, tables, bullet points, numbered lists, etc. All pure sans-serif text, with some Japanese Kanji thrown in. 500 pages of pure text.
I then hit a snag, when WinRAR encountered an error on extracting document.xml, stating that "CRC failed in word\document.xml. The file is corrupt". So I tried to fix this using several ZIP repair programs and stuff. Nothing worked. At
least not so far. Managed to extract an incomplete version of document.xml using WinRAR's 'Keep Broken Files' option when extracting. The extracted
document.xml came up to 3.31 MB while the original in archive is 7.53 MB. Viewed it in the Windows XML Editor which opened up the text in Internet Explorer, a jumble of text with no line breaks or paragraphs. Still, it actually extracted a few pages less than
the open-using-Wordpad method tried earlier. So trying to fix the archive again...
So I decided to give up the manual route for the meantime and focus on readymade solutions. I came across yet another microsoft article, but this one was at least more relevant than the last. It had this auto FixMe thing. I ran it, didn't
work. Apparently, as I found out later, "This fix will work for one specific tag error where there are equations and graphics in the same paragraph AND Office 2010 SP1 has not been applied."
Tried several (read: dozens) corrupt Word recovery software, from freeware to pro trials, to varying degrees of effect, although unsuccessful
in goal. Some failed to read it, saying it was too corrupted for them to handle, the best managed to recover about three-pages-worth less data compared to the Wordpad method. So yeah, anybody with a similar problem, always open it with wordpad first and recover
what you can. That doesn't mean I'm giving up though.
So here I am, tearing my hair out in frustration. Whew, I feel like I told you guys my life story. I guess worst case scenario, I report this to my boss, so I personally or from the company, I/we'll hire a team of professionals to deal with it.
But that's not an ideal scenario. It's gonna be out of my salary either way (the company has a firm policy of 'You reap what you sow'), along with a wage cut for making such an amateurish mistake even with continuous reminders to back it up every two sentences,
so I'd rather avoid that.
I'm currently looking to see whether there's a way to recover a previous version of an overwritten document somehow using a third-party software or something. (I didn't have Windows Backup enabled, so no previous version on Windows). So far, no
autosaved documents on MSWord AutoRecover, even though I have it enabled set to every 3 mins (or maybe I'm just not seeing it since I'm trying to look for it manually?). Or are the temporary files wiped on shutdown? I don't have 'Always save backup copy' option
enabled on word either.
So yeah, an auto fix, or a lengthy answer detailing what exactly I should do (from the very very basics), or a link to a site with such info, would be much appreciated. Seriously :D

When a Word document file is corrupted, then you can try several methods to recover it:
1. First of all, you can try the recovery function integrated with Microsoft Word, as follows:
1) On the File menu, click Open.
2) In the Look in list, click the drive, folder, or Internet location that contains the file that you want to open.
3) In the folder list, locate and open the folder that contains the file.
4) Select the file that you want to recover.
5) Click the arrow next to the Open button, and then click Open and Repair.

2. If you have multiple corrupt Word documents, then you can use the VBA macro provided in article

3.1 OpenOffice at http://www.openoffice.org. This is a very famous open source project that is designed to support Office file formats, including Word documents. The software can run under Windows.
3.2 LibreOffice at http://www.LibreOffice.org. Another free office suite.
3.3 AbiWord at http://www.abisource.com. This is a cross-platform tool that works under Unix and Windows.
3.4 Google Drive at https://drive.google.com/ also support to load Word document files.
Sometimes when Word fails to open your document, these tools may be able to open it successfully. If that is the case, then after the document is opened, you can just save it as a new document which will be error-free.
4. For docx files, they are actually a group of files compressed in Zip file format. Therefore, sometimes, if the corruption is only caused by the Zip file, then you can use Zip repair tools such as WinRAR at
http://www.rarlab.com to repair the file, as follows:
4.1 Assuming the corrupt document is a.docx, then you need to rename it to a.zip
4.2 Start WinRAR, go to "Tools > Repair Archive" to repair a.zip and generated a fixed file a_fixed.zip.
4.3 Rename a_fixed.zip back to a_fixed.doc
4.4 Using Word to open a_fixed.doc.
There may still be some warnings when opening the fixed file in Word, just let ignore it and Word will try to open and repair the fixed file. If the file can be opened successfully, then you can just save the contents into another error-free file.
5. If all above methods does not work, then you may try third-party tools such as DataNumen Word Repair at

I have used it to repair some word documents successfully. It provides a free demo version so that you can try to see if the data you want can be recovered or not.

I can't preview RAW files in Bridge CS5 or open them in Camera Raw

I've been using Photoshop CS5, Bridge and Camera Raw 6.7 with no problems whatsoever. I recently upgraded the OS on my MacBook Pro to 10.8.5 and can no longer preview RAW files in Bridge, or open them in Camera Raw.
I've downloaded the Adobe DNG converter, but would much prefer to using my existing workflow if possible.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help!

Adobe doesn't support CS5, an when I spoke to Apple, I was told that this is a known issue with OS 10.8.5 and that they're working on a patch. In the meantime I'm using Adobe's DNG as a workaround.
Have not heard before of this Known Issue, also find it hard to believe being true. But can't test my self because I only have CS6 and CC installed and always use Photodownloader to convert to DNG upon import. I have just installed the 10.8.5 update and checked in Bridge CC pointing to an attached card reader. no problem in showing the CR2 thumbs, it works as always and as expected.
To my knowledge Bridge CS5 is already 64 bits and I can't think of any valid reason why an OS update would cause this problem so suddenly (but I'm not a technician I have to confess…)
However, I would first try a check and repair permissions from Apple Disk Utility and also try Cocktail (good and cheap 3th party maintenance application for Mac) to clear caches and check permissions.
Also try a new user account just for testing to rule out your current account as the culprit.
