Quicklook is not quick anymore. It needs to convert even .mov files! Is there a solution?

Today, I got a rather agressive reminder to upgrade to Mavericks on my workstation. I work as a motion graphics designer and as a result of that, I am opening, watching and making movies all day.
On my home computer, an iMac, I installed Mavericks, and then Quicklook became totally unusable for movies. Even .movs in Apple Animation codec cannot be 'looked quick at', but need to convert.
Untill this is solved, I am not going to upgrade my workstation to Mavericks, since it is gonna cost me a lot of time and annoyance.
Why is this brilliant feature of Mac OSX crippled in Mavericks?

Both ProRes and H.264 are lossy and not useful as codec for graphics that have to be processed over and over.
However - it is not an improvement if less movies can be opened than before. Quicklook should open every movie that is encoded in a codec installed in the Library.

  • Photos are not showing anymore in Photo Stream folder even though they are there.

A couple of days ago my Photo Stream folder in iPhoto was suddenly empty. I checked and Photo Stream is switched on. I disabled it and switched it back on. Now You can see that Photo Stream is importing the images but when iPhoto is done, there are no photos in the folder. When taking a pic with my Mac it uploads as well into Photo Stream and shows up on my iPhone but in iPhoto Photo Stream still nothing.
I tried manually adding pics but it tells me they are already there. Very strange.
I also know that Photo Stream itself is working because it works to use Photo Stream as a screen saver and there all the pics show. So it must be a problem with iPhoto. I also did all the repair options for the Media Library that you can do when starting iPhoto. Nothing has changed the situation.
    Anyone any suggestions?

Disable Photo Stream in the System/iCloud preference pane
and in iPhoto's Photo Share preference pane.
Reboot and reenable both respectively. That should jump start Photo Stream.

  • I NEED HELP CONVERTING A MOVIE FILE INTO A DVD

    So this is my problem.
I have FCE and made a movie. Now, after i rendered it and used iDVD to make a DVD, it works and everything, BUT when i play back the DVD on any DVD player, the picture is not that great and at points looks like a bad TV reception.
I have a SONY handycam and this is what i used to captured the footage so i dont know if i need a HD camcorder. So my question is how do i make my DVD's look smooth??? does it have to do with the way i am rendering the movie, saving it, capturing it????Please let me know. Thank you

When you have finished editing in FCE this is the setting you MUST use:-
File>Export>QuickTime Movie. (For speed, deselect the "Make Movie Self-contained" box).
You must NOT use QuickTime CONVERSION.
The QT Movie is then dragged into iDVD etc.
This will produce good quality DVDs.
If you get jitter you may have to apply FCE's De-interlace Filter.

Want to convert old movie files to put in Itunes.
What does "old movies" mean to you? File type, audio and/or video compression format(s)?
Can't upgrade QT player preinstalled, so downloaded QT Player 7 and purchased QTPlayer 7 Pro registration code.  Can not get it to upgrade.
Did you follow the instructions found here?
If you have a fix, you can email me direct at [email protected]
To which fix do you refer? Activatng QT 7 Pro or converting the files? Even with QT 7 Pro activated you may need to modify your QT codec component configuration depending on the file type and compression formats used to encode your "old movies." There may be many different problems here with each having one or more "fixes." Please try to be more specific regarding your questions. Converting a muxed VOB MPEG2/AC3 file would be very different different from converting an AVI DivX5/MP3 file depending on which application you are attempting to use.

Why do I need to convert QT movies for my ipad2?

Becuase the iPad only reads certain video formats you will need to convert them.
But luckily you can drag your video files into iTunes and select the iTunes menu command (from the Advanced menu) to convert the file into a iPad/AppleTV comatible format. Easy.

  • Do I need to convert my AAC files before burning an audio CD?

I import all my music CDs into iTunes 9 as AAC. When I want to burn a playlist onto a CD as an audio CD, do I have to manually convert my the file into an AIFF format before burning a CD? I think I read that regular CD players cannot play songs that are in AAC format and must be in AIFF format. The CD will be played on a regular car CD player.

Do I need to convert my AAC files before burning an audio CD?
    No.
Simply selecting *Audio CD* in the Burn window is all you need to do.

  • When downloading the latest version of Itunes, the software is not accessible anymore and needs re-installing. How do I prevent that when re-installing I will not loose the numbers stored on my harddisk?

When downloading the latest version of Itunes, the software is not accessible anymore and Itunes seems to need to be reinstalled. How do I ensure the Itunes music is not lost and my pc is still recognized by Itunes store?

Crikey. Okay, that's part of the Gracenote SDK (that iTunes uses to go online to get album and track information for imports).
Let's take the message at it's word. If the file is damaged, we may be able to get past this by removing it from the iTunes program files and then doing a repair install of iTunes.
In Computer, open Local Disk C:\ (or whichever drive you've got your program files installed on).
If you've got a 32-bit version of Vista, open the "Program Files" folder.
If you've got a 64-bit version of Vista, open the "Program files (x86)" folder.
    Open the "iTunes" folder.
Drag the gnsdk_sdkmanager.dll file out of the folder and onto your Desktop.
Restart the PC. Head into your Uninstall a Program control panel, select "iTunes" and then click "Repair".
Does the repair install go through properly? If so, can you launch iTunes now?

  • Quicktime does not convert my .MOV file into a watchable format on Quicktime

    Hi guys!
I won't give you all a long sob story but basically, I went to my first music festival over the weekend and uploaded my videos onto my friends computer, I then uploaded these videos (i took with my iPhone) to Google Drive. When i got back onto my own computer, I download the .MOV files from Google Drive, these videos would not convert into a watchable format. It gives me the message -
"QuickTime Player can't open "IMG_8788.MOV". To see if additional software is available that will enable QuickTime Player to open the movie, click Tell Me More."
It says that Quicktime should support MOV files. I am using version 10.3 Quicktime player with iOS Mavericks. I really want help with this issue as I will be devastated if these videos are lost. My friend obviously deleted them off his computer because they did take up alot of space!

iPhone recorded files should already be compatible QT X v10.3 (and QL) as is in the MOV file container. However, the process of downloading, uploading, and again downloading the files may have created some sort of issue causing QT X to not properly "recognize" the content and thus, wants you to check for additional support.
In any case, will the files open in any other media players? (E.g., VLC, MPlayerX, NicePlayer, QT 7, MPEG Streamclip, etc.) For instance, if the files open in QT 7 Pro, MPEG Streamclip, or VLC, you may be able to copy the data to a new MOV file container which QT X will open and play. (I.e., this procedure does not recompress the data and is reasonable quick. Also not sure if using the "Command-D" Finder option to "duplicate" the file will create a "readable" file or not but you might try it.)

  • Need a script to move files to folders

Hi guys.  I have found a lot of similar threads but not something exactly like what I need.
I have a ton of files that need to be sorted into folders of the same name.  I found scripts to help me with that however, I have some variations on the files with an extension to the file name that also need to be moved into the same folders.
For instance, I have a folder named....
    spiegal_case_25_video_3
and I have the following files that all need to be moved into that folder....
    spiegal_case_25_video_3.mp4
    spiegal_case_25_video_3.webmsd.webm
    spiegal_case_25_video_3_h.flv
    spiegal_case_25_video_3_m.flv
    spiegal_case_25_video_3_l.flv
I have found scripts to get me part of the way there but I can't get the FLVs into the folders because of the _h _m and _l extensions on the file names.  Is there a way to move these files into their appropriate folders (maybe by ignoring the last 2 characters in the file name?)
I have also found a script that will read everything up to the underscore, but that won't help since the file names have multiple underscores.  So I really need a script that can do the sorting while ignoring the last 2 characters in the file name.
Can anyone help me out?  I'm not very script savvy.
    Thanks!

I've tested the following script (under OS X 10.8.5) with 4 subfolders and 20 files, all located in a folder called "Master folder" located in a USB flash drive named "EXT_DRIVE". It seems to work flawlessly. In its present state, the script will replace any file already located in any of the subfolders.
set theMasterFolder to POSIX file "/Volumes/EXT_DRIVE/Master folder"
    tell application "Finder"
        activate
set theFolders to (folders of folder theMasterFolder) as alias list
        repeat with thisFolder in theFolders
set thisName to name of thisFolder
move (files of folder theMasterFolder whose name begins with thisName) to thisFolder with replacing
        end repeat

  • Need to split Quicktime movie files

    Hi Group!
I have a bunch of movie files (MPEG4) that I need to split.
I'm thinking a workflow like this:
    - open movie in qt pro
    - create out-point at the 65 minute mark
    - cut it
    - create new movie
    - paste it
    - rename it to oldname_"Part1"
    - save it
    - close it without saving
    - rename remaining file to oldname_"Part2"
    - save it
    - close it without saving
So far I have the split/cut/paste part working, but I can't figure
out how to name a open movie file in Quicktime.
(I'm new to all this, as you can tell, and the Library in the Script Editor
for the Quicktime components did not really explain a lot to me).
    Any help appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Try something like this…
click here to open this script in your editor<pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:400px">set save_folder to path to movies folder as Unicode text
    tell application "QuickTime Player"
set my_movie to the front movie
    set my_file to save_folder & my suffixwith_extension(mymovie's name, "_Part2")
save my_movie in my_file -- use for a reference to the original
-- save self contained my_movie in my_file -- use for a portable file
    end tell
    to suffixwith_extension(filename, suffix)
    if file_name contains "." then
tell (a reference to AppleScript's text item delimiters)
    set {tid, contents} to {contents, "."}
set file_name to file_name's text items
tell (a reference to file_name's item -2) to set contents to contents & suffix
    set {file_name, contents} to {file_name as Unicode text, tid}
    end tell
    else
    set file_name to file_name & suffix
    end if
    return file_name
    end suffixwithextension</pre>

  • Need help converting quicktime movies into Flash files

I need to convert a QT, PhotoJPEG compressed, movie file into a .flv format. I have AE 6.5 Standard and it keeps quitting on exporting a SWV file which would could probably get me by with my client. But, again, it errors out saying something like a JPG is busy, or a file is busy.
I have FlipforMac,a purchased version. But I'm not sure if converting it into a .wmv and then a Flash file is the best route or is even possible.
Any suggestions or ideas of software that I could purchase??
    ~reicko

i don't think you have read up on the use of flash video
(FLV). there's nothing you need that you do
not already have (except maybe quicktime pro or some other
video editing program). the FLV exporter
comes FREE with flash 8. You should be able to open your
quicktime movie in QT PRO and export to FLV
format - then use any of the flash playback components for
FLV files - best bet is to read the help
docs on this subject and go to the devnet section of
adobe.com where there are several in-depth
articles about implementing flash video into your site.

  • Need to convert to .img file

I have an image, currently in .bmp format, but can be changed to .jpg or .tiff. I need to convert it to .img. I'm running CS6 on a Mac.

Are you sure you don't mean img in the file name?
Some cameras create file name like: img001.jpg, img002.jpeg, etc.
Googling .img points to some type of image in AutoCAD?
I find it hard to believe that AutoCAD cannot work with .jpg or tiff.
.JPG is pretty universally accepted by all applications that deal with images.
Who is asking you for an image with the .img file extension and what are they planning to do with it, (use in what application)?

My guess is they don't care. Most likely they're illiterate and don't know what a colon is for. They probably think it's a little-used character. Remember: these are the people who don't know the difference between "deprecate" and "depreciate".
I have the same colon problem as you do. But it's not the biggest problem I have encountered in Lion. If it was only that I'd be Mr. Delighted with Lion. There's worse than having a colon - uh -  that won't cooperate. A lot worse, in Lion.

I'm trying to convert a pdf file to a word document, so i tried to use adobe reader and it asked me to sign up, i tried to sign up and it told me i couldn't purchase it (the adobe export pdf pack) since it is not available for my country. what do i do??

Sorry, but your country isn't on the list of supported locations for Acrobat.com subscriptions
    http://forums.adobe.com/docs/DOC-2597
Over time Adobe does add more choices, but in your specific case there are no options for any Adobe Store purchases, so I don't expect it will change anytime soon. Acrobat.com services aren't available through resellers.
