Quicklook won't preview certain custom icons

I was rather proud when I found Tranformers png files with transparency (from http://www.michaelbay.com/blog/files/d58812e5a390e8b3a44162285e4ae054-74.html ) and immediately set about changing my Leopard and Vista volume icons. Unfortunately, neither icon will preview in Quicklook or in Finder's Coverflow view. However, they both show as normal icons on my desktop.
How can I get them to show in Quicklook and in the Finder's Coverflow view? I have found that these icons once pasted onto a folder's icon (in a get info window) will make the folder not be visible in quicklooking or in coverflowing, so maybe I have to convert the icons... any ideas?

There is something very strange about them indeed. I have a collection of pngs that I use as icons, you open the png file in Preview, select Edit->Copy, then select the file or folder you want to use the icon on, do GetInfo and Paste. Presto changeo, the png is now the icon on the item. It shows up in CoverFlow no problem. When I tried that with one of the pngs from the site the folder was invisible in Coverflow. Weird. I though perhaps there was some mysterious change in 10.5.2 so I downloaded one of my own png files, did the same thing again, using it, and no problem. Just like always. I decided maybe the original transformer png was just too bloody big (although I have no idea why that would make any difference), so I tried resize to a max of 512 pixels, then resaved with a different name. Still a no go. So I reopened it in Preview, then did a Save as... and saved it as a Photoshop file (psd), opened the psd version in Preview, copied it, pasted it as the icon onto a folder, and it worked--briefly. The folder with the icon was visible in Coverflow, and then it disappeared again! Never seen the like. I used my Automator workflow to add an icon to the original file, copied that in GetInfo and pasted, and it worked just fine. So it looks like the only way is create a custom thumbnail using something like CocoaThumbX or VitaminSee, then copy the custom icon from the file. The shortcoming is that those icons are only 128x128, so they are a bit smallish for good display if the Coverflow section is very big.

  • Quicklook won't preview my MOV or MP4 files

I've noticed this every since I upgraded to Yosemite. Never seemed to be an issue until now. Is it possible I have a plugin or something that's not supported? There really isn't too much out of the ordinary on my Mac.
When I press the space bar, the box spins for a second and then only an image appears previewing the video. At the top right all it says is "Open in Quicktime."

I have this problem too. I feel like I should post in a plugin forum, but maybe I can test if my problem is your problem.
I installed a qlgenerator that makes non-quicklook formats like flv, mkv, avi, ect. at least show a thumbnail in the quicklook.
I can't remember what it's called, it was something weird.
I'm wondering if that qlgenerator is overriding the system Quicktime .mov qlgenerator, because it shows a thumbnail instead of the movie for certain .MOV files, I think it's the ones with some kind of H.260 something codec that it got when I exported from Quicktime and those ones don't play in Quicklook because of the 3rd party plugin. MOV's downloaded from the internet do however play fine.
I should delete the plugin, but I like the QL thumbnail for odd formats, and frankly I don't remember what it was called.
Also wondering if there is a qlgenerator manager, like with a UI. I've never heard of such a thing, but I find the process of digging deep into the system folder tedious, also Finder GET INFO would be nice if it told a description of all these mystery qlgenerators I've installed over the years.

  • AIR app won't compile with custom icons

My AIr app won't compile when I choose anything but the
default icons. I created 4 pngs in Photoshop and it gives me the
    error: Useage error (incorrect arguments)
Any help? I've tried using only 1 icon, all 4, and no icons.
    Only no icons works.

You dont have to use the GUI to set it, you can use the air
    appliation XML.
inside your air-app.xml file look for something like:
    <icon>
    <image128x128>icons/myIcon128.png</image128x128>
    <image48x48>icons/myIcon48.png</image48x48>
    <image32x32>icons/myIcon32.png</image32x32>
    <image16x16>icons/myIcon16.png</image16x16>
    </icon>
if its not there add it, but replace the myIcon128.png with
your 128 point png image etc.
also the above assumes your icons are in a folder called
"icons" in the same directory as your air file.
    Hope it helps.

  • Custom Icons Disappear in Cover Flow Above Certain Size

I've been trying to create custom icons for certain folders and I've been having no luck when viewing them in cover flow.
I've downloaded a PNG file, 512x512 pixels. Open it in Preview, copy to the clipboard, do a 'get info' on the folder I wish to change the icon of, click the little icon, hit paste, and it appears correctly in the preview and in the finder Icons view, as well as on my desktop or whatever. However, if I turn on cover flow and drag the size of cover flow to larger than a certain point, the custom image disappears and all I get is a blank spot. It's as if the 256 pixel icon is being created but the 512 pixel image is being left blank.
I do not know if this happened in 10.5.1, as I hadn't tried until after installing the 10.5.2 combo update.
In the following picture, you can see 1: bottom right, a preview of the png file itself as it appears, correctly, in cover flow, 2: top right, the icon working correctly on the desktop and in the get info window, and 3: left: the cover flow view of the computer showing a bit gaping void where the custom icon should reside.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

This does NOT happen if I use an existing, working icon (say, put the Applications folder's icon onto my hard drive.) It seems to be an issue with custom icons only, not just changing the icon for something.

  • Custom icons 'unclickable' in icon view & not shown in coverflow

    Hi,
I just got off the line with Apple support, who couldn't solve my problem and then just told me that Leopard didn't support what I was doeing and thus that it was not there problem. Very un-apple if you ask me...
    Here's the problem:
I create custom icons for my movies by pasting images (Jpeg's or what have you) onto the icon in the 'Get info' window of a file. This works fine, however when I view the files in icon view I can't select the file by clicking on the icon, only by clicking on the text below. Strangly enough this problem dissapears when I edit the icon size in the 'View options' to a size equal too or smaller then 116x116. At this point I can select the file without any problem.
The same sort of happens in coverflow. Here I can't see the icon in coverflow if the icons are fairly large. Once I reduce the size of the coverflow bar too the point where the icons are very small the custom icons reappear.
The make the matter even more strange this problem only occurs with files where I created a custom icon for since I had Leopard installed. All custon icons created under 10.4 work fine.
This indicates too me that Leopard has problem with handeling the resolution of icons.
Note also that Leopard stores icon images in different sizes. Try copying an icon image from the 'Get info' window, then launch Preview, then select 'File' and 'New from Clipboard'. You will see that there are multiple images here.
Anybody know how to solve this?

Getting the same stupid behavior here!
I had a lot of customized Tiger folder icons but now i've got no good tools for customizing these new huge Leopard ones.
I began using *Icon Composer* from the developer tools after doing the graphics in Photoshop, then using IconDroplet to get them into a form where i can copy and paste them between *Get Info* windows. What a pain.
Now i discover this bit where they're not clickable once i replace them! I didn't know about the behaviors when making them big in *Cover Flow* and small in Icon view until i read this.
I've been snooping around but i haven't found what needs to be tweaked where to allow them to behave properly.

  • Custom icon seems locked ... can't change it

    Powermac G5/10.4.6
A while back I put custom icons on two partitions of a LaCie FW drive. I'd like to change the icons, but I can't select them in the "Get Info" window. I can change icons of other drives, just not these two partitions. When I click on the icon in the info window, it does not become "selected" (with the blue border around it.) Pasting does nothing and dragging an image into the Preview area of Get Info does nothing, either.
I've got Read & Write permissions on both these drives.
    Any ideas?

    hi again,
just follow the steps as i wrote them before. i'll put them here again w/ some more comments to walk you through
    1. double-click on the Terminal Application: Applications > Utilities > Terminal.
    2. a "Terminal" window pops up
    3. now enter the letters "cd", then a space, then drag the icon for the drive from a finder window into this Terminal window.
    4. hit return.
    now enter this: ls -lasF
then hit return to see what's in that area.
do you see a file in that listing called .VolumeIcon.icns ?
post back if it's still not clear so far...
to delete that file, enter in tothe same Terminal window the following command:
    sudo rm .VolumeIcon.icns
    then hit return.
then enter your admin password and hit return.
then enter ls -lasF again. this custom icon file will be gone now...
    cheers

  • Custom Icon problem

I had a friend make me a Custom Icon of an Apple and a custom Firefox logo blended together and i wanted to use it to show as my Firefox App Icon.
I went to get info on the FFox App. and  made the exsisting  Logo area turn BLUE as in selecting it and dragged the new 256x256 icon to that area. The icon went in ( the Green Plus was showing )  and when I checked it was an Icon of  PREVIEW's  Icon now I can't get rid of it. I even took the new icon and put it in the FFox  Resourses folder and named it  firefox.incs, re-named the old one by just addig a 1 to it's name. Then I re-booted and still the same old PREVIEW's icon is still there . How can I get the Icon I want to go there ? I even used Candybar icon changer. I need HELP with this PLEASE, it's driving me nuts. OH Yeah, I'm useing Snow Leopard 10.6.7 on a MBP laptop.

    Hi, Mike -
Instead of dragging the icon you want to the icon box in Get Info, use Copy/Paste.
First copy the new icon to the clipboard:
    • if it's already an icon for a doc or folder, do a Get Info on that, click the icon in the Get Info window (at the top, not in the Preview section) to select it, then select Copy from the Edit menu (or press Command-C).
    • if it is in an image file, open that file and select the image, then select Copy from the Edit menu (or press Command-C).
Then do a Get Info on FireFox, click the icon in the upper part of the window to select it, then select Paste from the Edit menu (or press Command-V).

  • Unable to set custom icon for system drive

Title says it all. Can't paste new custom icon onto drive icon in the Info panel-nothing happens. Any ideas?

When a custom icon is applied to a folder (including the "boot drive" icon, which is really just the top level folder), an invisible "Icon\r" file is created inside that folder (or a ".VolumeIcon.icns" in case of a volume - I missed this in the last post, sorry) and the "Custom Icon" file attribute is set. In order to do these things, a user must have sufficient privileges to modify the folder.
In Leopard, the default permissions are:<pre>
    $ lsbom -d /Library/Receipts/boms/com.apple.pkg.Essentials.bom |grep "^. "
    . 41775 0/80</pre>
The owner is "root", group is "admin", both have "read & write" privileges, and everyone else has "read only" privileges.
    Similarly, in "Tiger":<pre>
    $ lsbom -d /Library/Tiger/BaseSystem.pkg/Contents/Archive.bom |grep "^. "
    . 41775 0/80</pre>
Nothing has changed. But furthermore, since the "sticky" bit is set, this might even mean that a custom icon set by one "admin" would only be removable by the same "admin" (though this isn't something I have tested). But either way, at a minimum, "admin" privileges would normally be required.
So if you had previously modified the permissions on the boot drive to allow non-admins to make changes, then certainly you woudn't have to have "admin" privileges to do this. But that is not the "normal" state.
Beyond that, it's hard to say why you can't make the changes even as an "admin" without at least knowing what the current permissions are on "/" and "/.VolumeIcon.icns"...

  • Applying custom icons to all files of a type

I used to use ResEdit back int he day - and have used various tools on Mac and Windows to change icons. BUt I am stuggling with a default custom icon option for Mac OS X.
I have a set of farily simply icons for use with a number of file types that I use a lot - csv, psl, pti, tp3, xml, cfr, and others and I would like to always have newly created files get the custom icon.
Ideally this would be based on the extension - and they are not all from the same app.
I am not afraid to use the terminal or edit package contents. Although some of them are windows apps - and I already have a custom set in the virtual machine.
Some of the solutions I have seen out there such as Candy Bar seem to be only for application and folder settings.
In a couple cases - such as the .cfr and .pti - the apps do not have an open method where you can double click on the file and have it open - so I woudl be okay with something like reprogramming TextEdit to have the necessary icons and plist updates. Although when I tried to edit the plist file in TextEdit - all I did was render TextEdit unusable.
any help in the right direction will be appreaciated - I find it very helpful when I create 30 to 40 files ( a group of 5 differnet file types for each option ) to have icons that help me determine which ones I need to run a macro against - and which to send the customer - and which to upload to the vendor - etc.
Also missing the colorful icons in the sidebar and iTunes - as well an Unsanity Haxies - guess what audio feedback does make me more productive or at the very least more certain that the system is behaving as I expect.

A new Cocoa-AppleScript application can be created from the AppleScript Editor > File > New from Template > Cocoa-AppleScript Applet menu item, pasting in the following script:
    -- set icon
    on run -- application double-clicked
        tell current application's NSOpenPanel's openPanel()
            setFloatingPanel_(true)
setTitle_("Choose file items to set an icon for:")
            setPrompt_("Choose") -- the button name
            setDirectoryURL_(current application's NSURL's URLWithString_(POSIX path of (path to desktop)))
            setCanChooseFiles_(true)
            setCanChooseDirectories_(false)
            setShowsHiddenFiles_(false)
            setTreatsFilePackagesAsDirectories_(false)
            setAllowsMultipleSelection_(true)
set theResult to runModal() as integer
if theResult is current application's NSFileHandlingPanelCancelButton then tell me to quit -- cancel button
set theFiles to URLs() as list
        end tell
repeat with eachFile in theFiles -- coerce the file paths in place
tell eachFile to set its contents to its |path|() as text
        end repeat
        open theFiles
    end run
on open theItems -- items dropped onto the application
try -- get a path to the image to be used for the icon
set imageFile to POSIX path of (choose file with prompt "Select an image file for the icon:" of type "public.image")
        on error -- cancel button
            tell me to quit
        end try
set errorList to {} -- this will be a list of problem files, if any
        repeat with eachItem in theItems
            if not setIcon(imageFile, eachItem) then
set end of errorList to (eachItem & return)
            end if
        end repeat
if errorList is not {} then -- oops, show items where there was a problem
display alert "Error setting icon." message "Icons of the following items were not set:" & return & return & errorList as text
        end if
tell me to quit -- done
    end open
to setIcon(imageFilePath, fileItemPath) -- set the icon of a file item
set mySharedWorkspace to current application's NSWorkspace's sharedWorkspace()
        set myImage to current application's NSImage's alloc's initWithContentsOfFile_(imageFilePath)
        try
            return mySharedWorkspace's setIcon_forFile_options_(myImage, fileItemPath, 0) as boolean
        on error errorMessage
            return false
        end try
    end setIcon
After saving, the resulting application can be double-clicked, or you can drop files onto it (the script can't be run from the script editor).  It can be tweaked further to include image files in the application bundle to select from (the icon images can be any image, not just icon files), or to be used in the Finder's toolbar, but for now the basic application should get you started.

  • Migrated to new comp, now Air Won't Preview from Dreamweaver

    Hi all,
I'm on a mac and have migrated over to a new computer. Air has decided it won't preview from dreamweaver.
I'm 99% sure this is due to a path issue /usrname vs /newusrname with dreamweaver exten finding the ADL or whatever the exten calls to preivew, but I'm not sure how to change it.
    Any ideas?

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

  • LiveType Crashes Previewing Certain Effect  - lib3ivxEnc.dylib

    Hi,
I've used LiveType before (with FCE) and have now installed FCS2 (with FCP 6, LT 2.1.3 etc.). However, poking around the LiveType text effects - the application always crashes on me when previewing certain effects. For example if I launch the application, go immediately to the "Effects" tab of the Media Browser, then click on "Barrel Jump" the beach ball appears and I crash with an error saying the problem appears to be with the lib3ivxEnc.dylib plug in.
I've updated the SW with all the updates - still crashes. I followed the FCEHD removal instructions http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301182 (improvising on the way for other FCP pieces), reinstalled the suite again last night, left it unpatched and still no joy. Though I have noticed that without the patches applied the app will sometimes show me lines in the preview and remain up. I've even once used the effect in some sample text but then it crashed again later when I started to go through the Media Browser again a few minutes later.
I've tried different accounts on my machine - but LiveType still crashes, so it's not a user setting/config thing (or doesn't seem like it).
I've done a number of searches in this forum and Google in general and have not seen this reported before - so I'm assuming something in my setup is messed up and causing this.
    I'd love to know if:
    a) anyone has an idea of what might be wrong or what I can do to correct
    b) has full FCP removal instructions in case there is some piece still hanging around that I haven't found and is not being overwritten during the install
    c) has advice to reinstall just LiveType and it's components instead of the entire suite
The only thing exciting in my setup is that the LiveType support files are all on an external FW800 drive since my startup drive is around 30GB and won't hold it all without busting open.
I've considered a fresh install of Leopard and then FCP to see if that works - but I'd love a less timely solution if possible.
I've not installed this on my Laptop (not sure it meets the specs) to see if it's reproducible there but might to see. Right now this is all happening on my PowerMac G5 (Leopard 10.5.1).
Let me know if I've left out any details to help you understand the issue better and if you have any suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Sean

    I think I'm making progress.
I again tolled the system for FCP components using the FCEHD article. I think I ended up removing a bit more than last time. I also tried the 3ivx uninataller and it failed So I simply trashed the 3ivx folder in apps and again the 3ivx software in the folders referenced by the Apple article.
This time when I started the FCPS2 install, all components listed themselves as "Install" instead of a few showing "Upgrade" before. I installed only LT this time and after the installation I ran LT and the effects worked fine! Whew!
I've now restarted the install for the rest of the FCPS2 apps and we'll see if everything works OK afterwards. If not - then other part of the suite is causing the issues.
Good point about permissions - I've not done that in a while since I've been deleting and installing so I'll be sure to do that after the install completes.
I'll post again once the install works (or doesn't).

  • Custom icons not showing up when I drag a folder into the dock

I have a dock in 10.6 (on the left side, going vertical, if that matters). I've dragged a few folders into it, each containing Aliases to various programs. I've set custom icons on these folders, so I can tell at a glance what's in each folder (since it won't fan out for a vertical dock). But even after I rebooted, the dock isn't showing my custom icons but rather kind of an overlay of the various icons in each folder. What am I doing wrong?

  • Remote Panel exe no custom icon

I have a built exe which has remote panels enabled and is working properly, however there are two less than ideal issues I am trying to resolve:
    1) The custom icon I have developed for my exe only appears in the titlebar of the server VI but not in the remote panel.  The default LabVIEW icon is displayed on the remote panel.  I assume this is because the remote machine's OS has not registered the icon of the exe and is using the icon registered to the run-time engine on the remote machine.  I would like to know if anyone has found a workaround to getting custom icons to show properly in the remote panel?
    2) There seems to be a slight delay in actually loading the front panel of the main VI in the remote browser, or any pop-ups remotely for that matter.  You can visually see the LabVIEW toolbar (run, stop, VI icon, etc.) for a split second before the VI shows as running on the remote panel.  This occurs when calling a subVI set to open front panel when called.  Even if VI Server is used to load a VI and the VI is run well before the front panel is opened there is still a lag on the remote machine that displays the VI before it is running and shows the LabVIEW toolbar briefly.  Does anyone know how to improve this?  For pop-ups it looks a little awkward (I know pop-ups are probably not recommended for remote panels but my application requires a limited amount of them).

    Steffan,
Let's start with the first issue.  I have gotten a chance to test out the first problem on my own, creating an executable that runs with remote panels in LabView 2010 and I was not able to reproduce the problem with the custom icon.  The icon that I made for the VI shows up on the remote computer.  I did not see any CARs relating to this issue.  One thing you can try is running your program in the LabView development environment to see if the icon still won't show up on the remote computer.  That way you can determine if the issue is within LabView or within the executable.  You can also do the same thing to see if you still see the delay in the LabView toolbars.
Hope that helps!  Have a great day!

    Hi Joe,
Thanks for the reply.  For the custom icon, that is created in the build specification for the exe so it can't be run from the development environment to test.  Which icon resolutions did you specify?  Does your remote test machine only have the run-time engine installed? I tried specifying icons for all resolutions but that did not make a difference.  One additional thing to note is that my server machine is running Windows 7 and the remote machine is running XP.  Could that be a possible cause?
As far as the toolbars delay, that is present in both development environment and as an exe so that one should be easily reproducible.  Let me know if I am missing something here.

  • How do I strip off custom icons?

I am transitioning to Leopard and a lot of my graphics files have custom icons on them to let me see what they contained.
Cover flow takes these custom icons in preference to a real preview and shows a very pixelated version on screen.
How do I strip them off in bulk, and also preferably reset the file type which was stolen by GraphicConverter when I made the custom preview icons?

To remove icons you could try [CocoThumbX|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26136]. It has a mode to delete icons.
CocoThumbX, at least the version I tried, didn't create hires icons - for that I used [FastIcns|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/31205]. You can set it up to run in batch mode, which allows you to setup the icon resolution to 512x512.
This worked, and my CoverFlow icons were sharp and crisp.
(One note however: when I used Icon View in the Finder window where I output the hires icons, the window was unbelievably slow (the rest of the Finder was fine). I sent feedback about that to Apple already, but would like to hear if you experience the same issue.

  • OSX VPN takes a while because its loading custom icons

When I connect via VPN (PPTP) to the OSX Server it takes quite a while to show a directory containing TIF images, because they all have a custom icon (the icon is a thumbnail of the image). It doesn't matter whether I'm in List, Icon, or any other view.
The connection I'm on is a Cable Modem, and I'm connecting to the OSX Server that is sitting on a T3 line, and it just takes about a minute or two before I get a complete directory listing.
Is this normal over a VPN connection? I realize its encrypted and takes a while longer, but still....
I was just curious if there was a way to just show blank icons or not show thumbnails that have a preview, etc., and see if that would help.
    Thanks in advance
