Hi, ive just upgraded my software from a tiger 10.4.11 on the macbook to a l0.5.5 leopard and i dont have quicklook, should i with this software or is it just with original leopard, and if i should is there anything i do to get it, cheers

Hey, thanks sorry just bought my first mac and just getting used to it, i press the space and it just tells me what the file is and when last modified and also how many items but dosent show the contents not quite sure if it should..should i... but i dont have the quicklook icon neither...should i...also could you tel me what trashing the preference file is...im also missing all contents of the connect to server...no icon either in the help menu....thanks and sorry for being a pain

Quicklook downloads attachments to wrong folder

Tried searching for this but came up empty so I want to try and see if others are wondering why Quicklook in Mail downloads the attachment to a folder different from the one I specified as my Downloads folder, in my case, my Desktop Folder.
I receive an email with an attachment. I use Quicklook (be it the button on the header, pressing the spacebar, or using the contextual menu) to view the file at which time Mail first downloads the attachment. However, it always downloads it to the User/Library/Mail Downloads folder instead of the Downloads folder I selected in Preferences.
Does anyone else have this "problem?" If so, is there a setting for this I am not seeing? I hope it can be changed because I habitually use Quicklook now and that Mail Downloads folder can fill up rather quickly without realizing as I download attachments to specific places after the fact, causing double copies on my hard drive. Hope someone can help.

Andew, thanks for the reply, however, I am with "gumsie" on this one. Like gumsie stated, if I save the attachment using the button in the header or contextual menu, and open the file from there, then there is no real problem. However, if I Open or Quicklook the attachment directly in the Message Window, then Mail does save a copy of the attachment to the /Library/Mail Downloads folder no matter if I saved the attachment before or if I have a Downloads folder set in Preferences. This is what I think is an odd bit of behavior from the software.
In the end, I think there is really nothing we can do about this and the best thing for me to do is just download the attachment to my set Downloads folder, and Open/Quicklook it from there in order to avoid multiple copies on my drive (I deal with largish files so cumulatively multiple copies just take up too much space on the drive). It's too bad Apple hasn't addressed this.

Quicklook no longer working with AVi files in 10.7

Howdy,
Mysteries abound! Updated to 10.7, and ever since, I have been having two problems:
1. AVI files no longer open open using QuickLook; all I get is is the AVI icon, and the "Open in VLC" button.
2. The icon preview for AVI files is no longer displayed as well; only the generic VLC icon shows (and yes, I have the "Show icon preview" box cheeked in the Finder preferences).
Is anyone else having the same problem? Does anyone know how to remedy this? Thanks in advance! (^_^)

Flip4Mac (installed) and Perian (installed) provide this support. As a matter of fact, I can play AVI and WMV in Quicktime 10.2 and 7.6.6. It's the Finder or the QuickLook subsystem what has a problem.
Besides that, having those QuickTime components installed, there are no problems in a new installation from scratch in a nother disk. But I'm trying to avoid that and to restore in Mountain Lion part of the functionality of my Mac under Snow Leopard.
There should be a preference, cache, temp file or something like that that is impeding QuickTime or the Finder to access the necessary components to preview and quicklook AVI and WMV files.

Issue with Quicklook in toast 9

I am having an issue with Quicklook in Toast 9 just in my user account. Any ideas on why? I have removed and re-installed all Toast 9 files, prefs, etc... The issue is only in my user account.

How to stop Quicklook Satellite from crashing on boot up

I am running 10.8.2 Mountain Lion on a Mac Pro 3.2GHZ Quad tower, 16GB RAM. About a week ago, I noticed that after every system boot, I am presented with the message that QuickLookSatellite has crashed. I have NOT opted in System Preferences to send data to APPLE, so I am presented with the options od "detail" or "ignore" and "report to apple.
I would like to NOT see these messages. I don't want info to be sent knowingly or unknowingly to Apple from my machine. SO I guess, the more important question is WHAT IS CAUSING THIS & HOW (if at all), can I repair the problem. The mesage pops up on EVERY boot and sometimes more than once after boot. I am pasting the error message.
Any idea what is causing this AND how to repair it? Thanks!!!

to highlight this group if you can't see if type "login items" in the search field at the top right.

My quicklook is broken and gives me an error!

Hi there!
So over the past few days the quickload feature in finder has stopped working for me. When ever I highlight a file and hit the spacebar quicklook loads but not as usual. In the case of trying to load an MP3, no music plays and only a small image of it appears. The same goes for all images and every other type of viewable application. Check out the example of it below to see. It also gives me the error: "An error occured with the preview of this document."
Before I posted this I tried to resolve it with good old google, I found numerous articles telling me to delete the quickload preference files in the preferences folder of User/System/Library/Preferences. I have deleted those, but still nothing has worked. I have also repaired my disk permissions several times, the only thing is I have replaced my CD drive with an SSD and everything is running out that drive, I just keep regular files on the HD. So PLEASE, I would really like some help because I deal with quicklook tons and can't go on without it. Thank you guys!

Non-ASCII Characters in QuickLook

Using QuickLook on plain UTF-8 text files (AKA .txt files) displays garbled interpretations of various extended characters, including fancy quotes and other nice formatting characters... not to mention the entire Russian alphabet. Surprising given OS X’s general UTF-8/Unicode friendliness.
Anyone know of a hack / fix ?
I'm willing to go outside the box a bit if necessary, considering most of the text files I work with are multilingual.

Using the 'xattr' command, as explained in the thread, fixes the Quicklook display (for me). But it's still not clear 1) why you have to do this to make quicklook recognize the encoding and 2) why isn't there more people affected?

Preview (and also Quicklook) no longer show certain JPGs

i run latest 10.6.8 software.
It was always that preview and later also quicklook showed all the jpgs i created with Photoshop in CMYK mode with included color profile without any problems.
Now both dont show them anymore.
When trying, this error shows up in the logs: "Malformed Image: too many APP2 markers"
The files themselfes seem to be okay because otherwise they can be opened properly.
aha -> firefox shows them but safari also refuses.
I tried on a friends macbook with also 10.6.8. Same problem there.

From what you describe, it sounds like notifications may have changed some how in your Settings for these apps. You can check that here:

To see which apps provide notifications and change notification settings, go to Settings > Notifications, and tap the app name.
You can also check to see if they were removed from the Today Notifications with here:

Set Today options. To choose what information appears, tap the Edit key at the end of your information on the Today tab. Tap + or — to add or remove information. To arrange the order of your information, touch , then drag it to a new position.

How can I update the QuickLook database?

About 10 days ago my dock in Leopard crashed and I could not find it without restarting. Now I see in the console at startup:
Dock[150] [QL ERROR] Generator database update takes too long... we will use what we currently have
Since I have updated the Info.plist on my .tex files to conform to public.plain-text I would like quicklook to take note of it, but nothing I do will force it to take effect. On the command line qlmanage -r shows "resetting all generators" but qlmanage -m ends with the statement "generators change detected: NO". Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

This is by no means a complete answer. I still get the error messages in the console. However, I now have a partial answer to my question. After I log in, I run Cocktail 4.0.1 for Leopard, Select System then Databases. Then Rebuild Launch Services database with Restore default file associations enabled. About three quarters of the way through executing /System/Library/ScriptingAdditions/StandardAdditions.osax/Contents/MacOS/uid the .tex files lose the icon when selected, show the label "TEX" and can now be viewed with a touch of the space bar. What a pleasure. To the poster who recommends staying with Tiger, I say I never want to give up the pleasure of having Quick Look a spacebar away for all my files.
Unfortunately, when I logout, restart or shutdown, once again, none of the org.tug.tex files are registered as public.plain-text and only the icon appears. To regain Quick Look capability I have to Rebuild Launch Services database. It only takes a few minutes, but I would like to automate the process somehow at login, but I have no idea how to do this. I will probably stay logged in for long periods of time, hoping that an update in the future will resolve this.

How to open a file in the default application for it directly from QuickLook?

Is there a way to issue an Open command straight from QuickLook?
Problem:
I have a directory containing symlinks to the PDF files I usually refer to. I cannot copy the files locally and I must use symlinks.
When I need to open one of the files, I can't rely on Finder icon previews as these do not show for symlinks (I think that's absurd, don't you? Is there any reason why they would not?)
Not knowing how to pick the file I am interested in, I select them all and OPTION+SPACE QuickLook them. Immediately following OPTION+SPACE I press COMMAND+ENTER and finally see them all tiled across the screen (notice: COMMAND+ENTER is not bound in Finder as far as I can see, why not allow users to press that directly?)
Here's the problem:
Once I choose the file I want, with the mouse of the arrow keys, I don't see how I could open just that file in the owning application (say: Adobe Reader).
That, to me, is dumbfounding. COMMAND+O opens ALL files I selected to begin with but I think QuickLook should allow for opening the file currently being previewed with an UI element or a keystroke, shouldn't it?
It is so strange that it almost can't be, maybe I am just missing the obvious... in that case I apologise. Feel free to report this to Apple if you think they can work on this.
For the record, it's the 29th of Aug 2012 and I am on 10.6.8.

Small update.
I created a database with a western european characterset We8MSWIn1252
If I use utl_file to write out the code on the database server it gets produced correctly in Ascii format with the accented charcacters.
As soon as I try and write out the code using owa_util.Mime_header and htp.p the code is written in UTF8 format.
I did try and write out the header specifying a western european characterset but it seems that if it encounters an accented character it automatically switches to utf-8 mode. If there are no accented charcters the file is produced in ascii format.
Really stumped on this one.

How can I disable QuickLook

This is technically not a new question. I asked it nearly a year ago and got no satisfactory response. I find that when I waken my iMac from sleep by pressing the space bar it highlights an apparently random icon on the desktop. Then, if I hit the space bar again QuickLook does its thing and that folder or document expands in the middle of the screen. How can I either disable QuickLook completely or, failing that, either disable the random highlighting feature or switch the function that activates it from the space bar to a more obscure key that I won't be pressing by accident? And please, no one tell me that I should waken the computer by depressing a key other than the space bar. That is not a solution, it's a capitulation.

Hitting the space bar once should only awaken your computer.
It's more likely that the icon had already been selected when your computer went to sleep. If an icon is selected on the Desktop, hitting the space bar will open Quick Look as you describe.
I think what you may be doing is tapping your space key two or more times to wake the computer.
One tap is sufficient to wake the computer. Subsequent taps will either select an icon or open Quick Look for any icon already selected.
And please, no one tell me that I should waken the computer by depressing a key other than the space bar.
I won't tell you that. But I will tell you to not press the space key more than once to wake the computer.

Why?

Move the com.apple.screencapture.plist file out of /username/Library/Preferences/ to the Desktop, log out and back in, and try again.
BTW, use the default 10 point setting for text. Your choice just wastes screen space.

Quicklook no longer works with iTunes 8.0.1

When you open the Movie or TV folder in Finder, the file icons begin changing from iTunes icons to a blank grey icons and the files can no longer be viewed from Preview or Quicklook.
Is this an intended design change or is it a software oversight with iTunes 8.0.1? In either case it's very annoying, as I use Quicklook extensively.

It was a precursor to my G4 HD going south. Had to rebuild from scratch and it's fine.

Quicklook doesn't work with .avi files

Hello, i've got a little problem right here on my mac. The thing is that I used to have Snow Leopard as a OS and quicklook used to work great, it opened all the extensions I used to work with. The thing change when I format my HDD and installed a clean copy of Lion OS. Now quicklook works fine as it used to but not any more with .avi files. I remember that this feature was working great on my previous OS, and it's really important for me to find a solution because quicklook is an absolutely amazing feature of our Macs.
I've tryed to download plugins, restoring permissions or even trying it with a guest user, but no success.
Please help me. If you need more info about specs or something i'll be glad to give them to you.

No finder preview, quicklook or cover flow for AVI files in 10.8.1

Just installed 10.8.1 over 10.6.8, and I can't preview avi or wmv files in the Finder. CoverFlow just shows a generic QuickTime movie icon and Quicklook just an empty window with a spinning wheel. There are no problems with mp4, m4v and mpg.
Quicktime X10.2 and Quicktime 7.6.6 opens them fine.
I have:
a) Deleted all caches with Onyx
b) Repaired permissions
c) Deinstalled Perian 1-2-3, Divx plius 8.2.3 and Flip4Mac 3.0b2
d) Deleted all codecs from /Library/Quicktime and ~/Library/Quicktime
e) Rebuilt launchservices
f) Looked for any remains of any old installation of a 3ivx codec. There's nothing.
It happens in two different user accounts. Both of them, admin accounts. So, I've moved away /Library/Preferences to start up with a new empty Preferences folder.
What else can I try?
Incidentally, I'm also experiencing the blurry or disapearing icons bug.

There's no Quicktime folder in ~/Library

Flip4Mac (installed) and Perian (installed) provide this support. As a matter of fact, I can play AVI and WMV in Quicktime 10.2 and 7.6.6. It's the Finder or the QuickLook subsystem what has a problem.
Besides that, having those QuickTime components installed, there are no problems in a new installation from scratch in a nother disk. But I'm trying to avoid that and to restore in Mountain Lion part of the functionality of my Mac under Snow Leopard.
There should be a preference, cache, temp file or something like that that is impeding QuickTime or the Finder to access the necessary components to preview and quicklook AVI and WMV files.

In Yosemite Mail, the control click option no longer works when clicking on attachments, that previously allowed you to save, quicklook, and select app to open with. Any solutions?

It shows just 4 always as an option in the "open with" lsit. Also I haven't downloaded any apps for a while so why would it start now?
Do you know how I can estabilsh how many apps are counting toward this 10 and what they are?
