QuickSilver G4-800 & IOGear GUF320

Hello all...
I have a QuickSilver Power Macintosh G4 800 running Mac OS X 10.4.7. The onboard Firewire failed, and the machine came to me with a Sonnet Allegro FW400 board installed. This wasn't a very good card, so I replaced it with an IOGear GUF320 FW400/USB 2.0 combo card.
This new card works great in every regard, but at every startup I get the message that a device on the USB bus has caused an overcurrent condition and will be turned off. Trouble is--there's nothing connected to the USB or Firewire busses on the card. This behavior doesn't change with devices connected.
Every attached device works fine, no matter what port I use, so to try and gain more insight as to the problem, I checked the system log in Console. Here's what I found:
"Aug 21 10:18:10 MasterMac kernel[0]: USB Notification: The device "EHCI Root Hub Simulation" @ 0x73000000 has caused an overcurrent condition. The hub it is attached to has been disabled"
It looks like there's a hardware issue here...a test point that's been mistakenly left active or something. Other than complaining to IOGear, is there anything that can be done to force the computer to ignore this portion of the hardware?

I finally just threw the card in the garbage because it went from "not working" to "really not working" and acted badly even when installed in a PC.
I now have two separate Firewire and USB cards. The Firewire one works great, the USB card is still iffy.

I have a Quicksilver twin 800 mhz and use 4.11.
My volumes show a question mark(?) on upper right corner.
    What is going on ?

One other thought: does the question mark go away when you open a folder?
I am beginning to suspect that maybe just right-clicking the Finder window's toolbar and selecting "Customize Toolbar" and then seeing if you can drag the question mark off the tool bar, like there is some phantom item that the Finder can't resolve.
A puzzle.  It definitely has something to do with the Finder toolbar, though.  I'm pretty sure of that at this point.
EDIT:  OK, I recreated the situation.  You can drag an AppleScript to the toolbar so it will always be available.  However, if that AppleScript file goes away, what's left is the dreaded question mark.  The solution is to just drag the question mark off the toolbar while having the "Customize Toolbar" pane open as instructed above.
Well, I learn something new today, and it's only 52 minutes into the day.  My work here is done.
    Now you see it:
    Now you don't:
Actually, you can just right-click on the question mark and select "Remove Item" and it should be gone.

  • PM G4 Quicksilver (dual 800)

    Hi @ all
Is there any way to make a Quicksilver G4 (dual 800) more quiet? Now my Quicksilver is very loud so I can't make my work while the System is on. I thought about changing the PSU-Fan and the Case-Fan.
Is there a possybility to change the Heatsink that is installed now to copper or any other Heatsink?
I even need a airport card for the Quicksilver where can I get this from and what is the price for it?
    Thx for your help

Hi, positioning the computer actually makes more a difference than most folks suspect. Putting it behind the desk, in the corner, and so on allows other things to come between you and the sound. As long as the air flow isn't obstructed, that's a good thing. Have you blown out the ducts/openings lately? Dust buildup causes the fans to work harder. Replacing internal devices with external ones also takes the load off the computer, causing it to run quieter. Here are even more radical ideas if the sound is driving you nuts:
1> Water cooling kits. (Not for the faint of heart!)
2> Sound insulation inside the case -- Dynamat, packing foam, and other material. You can use this on particular devices that are loud (say like older hard drives) or just line the case itself with the material.

  • Adding SCSI drives to my 2001 G4 Quicksilver Dual 800?

I'm thinking about adding additional SCSI drives to my Dual 800. I ordered my G4 Quicksilver with a 10,000rpm Seagate Cheeta and now want to add another Seagate SCSI. I'm choosing Seagate for no other reason than to stay using a product that has been successful for me. My questions are (enter drum roll here)..... how big of SCSI drive can I install??? What should I check out before doing so? What problems may I encounter?

I expect it may be an Adaptec or Atto SCSI card. If you open the case and have a look there's probably a make and model stamped on the card itself. You may be able to find the information from the manufacturers web site:
    http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/support/mac/

Alternatively I guess you could send them an email and hope you get a useful response.

  • I did it....Old Quicksilver Tower 800 Meg.  with new CPU

I have a old Quicksilver tower which was 800 Megahertz...I put in the OWC chip in it some months ago which upgraded it to 2 gigahertz...I have a 40gig HD. That is the biggest problem. With this software you need at least 80 gigs. However, I had to ease the drive and reformat it, but it works. I don't have a dvd drive in this old rig so I used a Macbook laptop and firewire connected it-laptop was the target drive and it installed. I could have taken a long nap....but I was to anxious to see if it would fail...It is really nice!

I didn't even know they made 2 GHz G4s. It's cool you got it working though

  • Replacement fans for Quicksilver 2002 800

I'm thinking of changing the following fans on my machine for quieter versions as the Quicksilver is just too loud!
Case fan, PSU exhaust, CPU intake
Which are the best to replace and does anyone know of the best fans I can use to do a direct swop? Thanks in advance.

    Hi-
    Your fans are as follows:
    Case fan 120mm x 25mm = 86 cfm 37 dba
    PSU exhaust 80mm x 25mm = 38 cfm 29 dba
    CPU intake 60mm x ??= 23 cfm 33.5 dba
As I have, just find a fan of the proper size, and necessary airflow, and replace as desired. Often times, the fans will come with 3 wires. The third, a yellow wire for speed controllers, which doesn't have to be connected. You can rewire your connectors, or use adapters, or solder directly- your choice.
The following has lots of different brands listed, for easy comparison:

Sorry about the thickness on the CPU fan- you'll have to measure it (total thickness of fan cage), or, maybe someone else will post.
I have fans by Scythe, A.C. Ryan, Aerocool, and Arctic Cooling. All nice stuff, each much quieter than the origional.

  • Imovie for G4 Quicksilver 2002 (800 Mhz)

I recently purchased a used G4 quicksilver for my daughter. However, I cannot load imovie 09 on this computer and I'm wondering which older version of imovie will play on this computer. I'm prepared to upgrade the graphics card to 64 mb or 128 mb if it will make a difference.
    Thanks

I'd look for iMovie 06, but it's no longer available, so you'll need to look somewhere like ebay.

  • More questions: Quicksilver G4 800 Hard Drive

    Hi,
I have to admit, I'm totally confused about what to get to add on to my 867 G4 Quick Silver, which has an 60G IBM Ultra ATA/66, which also is impossible to find. Can I replace with another Ultra ATA/66, or an ATA/higher number? There are so many different ATA drives out there and most of them don't work for Mac.
Please recommend one that would work in tandem with the current drive. My objective is to put in the new drive and format it as the master, and move the current one to slave position, which I also have no ideas how to do.
Any suggestions and advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance.

Last year I replaced/added 2 HDs to my G4. Both were Maxtor ATA/133 7200RPM. One is 100GB & the other is 120GB. Both were on sale for $15 after rebates at Micro Center. You should be able to use the ATA/133 drives. You may be able to use drives larger than 128GB. Check this link.
How Big a Hard Drive Can I Put in My iMac, eMac, or Power Mac?
    http://lowendmac.com/macdan/05/1024.html
When you install the new drive, mount it on top of the existing drive. Set the jumpers to Slave (see markings on drive). Then boot to your existing drive & use Drive Utility to format it. (You can also partition if you want to.) You can use Drive Utility Restore function to copy the existing drives files to the new drive.
Then shutdown. Remove both drives. Move the jumpers on the existing drive to Slave & on the new drive to Master. Mount the new (Master) drive on the bottom & the existing (Slave) drive on top. That's it.
You can use the Startup Manager (depress the Option key at Startup/Restart) to select which drive to boot to.
    Cheers, Tom

  • Quicksilver  G4  800 Hard Drive

Hard Drive went, can I replace the old 30 gb with a 160 Gb seagate or do I have to stay below 120 gb also do I have to format a Seagate ? Thanks

Hi, jamman66, and welcome to the Discussions!
Yes. Any QS Mac with BootROM version 4.3.3f2 (indicated in the Hardware Overview section of the System Profiler) and is running OS X 10.2 or later, has built-in support for large drives.
I'm currently running a 300GB Seagate as master, with a 160GB Seagate slave for a startup drive. I frequently swap drives around without incident, using a number of various drive brands, most being over 120GB. All major brands (Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital, and Hitachi) work well, from my personal experience. Samsung should be all right, too, though I've never owned one.
I usually buy drives based on the best "deal" available at the time, looking at cost per GB for a given cache size. If you're looking for a 250GB or larger drive, you might opt for one with a 16MB cache, versus an 8MB cache, since a larger cache generally means "faster" performance from the drive. For a drive smaller than 250GB, a drive with an 8MB cache should outperform one with a 2MB cache.
I'd recommend swapping one of the 80GB drives with whichever large drive you purchase. Some folks install a third drive on the slower ATA 3 optical drive bus, but I don't recommend it. If you need more drives, IMO it's best to add an ATA-133 PCI card and have the ability to run two more internal hard drives, or purchase a SATA card and get new SATA drives instead of new ATA drives, taking advantage of the significant speed increase inherent in SATA.

  • Is it possible to Upgrade Quicksilver 733

Is it possible to upgrade a Quicksilver 733 machine with a dual 867 daughter card?

    Hi-
    A dual 867 from a MDD?
    No.
You can use any of the Quicksilver processors; 800, dual 800, single 867 and 933, or dual 1ghz.

  • G4 QuickSilver multi-drive working 10.4 & 9.2.2 - upgrade to 10.5 ?

I've spent a week looking for this answer, so please be patient with me. I've had MAC's since my first Quadra around '87. Can't give up Claris CAD (and I have XTND CGT with DXF translation - yeah !). Even my HP 5500 HDN and plotter work fine.
I have a Quicksilver dual 800 system with four drives - two ATA, and TWO SCSI. Of course the SCSI have all the "old" Claris files on them.
Is there ANY way to upgrade to Leopard so I can work on iPhone app development and keep booting to OS 9.2.2 BTW - it works great right now. I don't care if I have to boot between the two - lament because Classic environment has been so easy to use - but I need 10.5 and just can't have yet another system on my desk.
Do I just boot into 9.2.2 and copy the system to one of the SCSI drives, then "bless" it in Startup. How do I keep what is otherwise a fully functioning 9.2.2 system as a separate disk ? Or can it keep existing on the same drive as 10.5 and just need to boot between them ?
BTW - have the 10.5 disks for over a year now - and been screwing with this for that long - but now I'm at a point where can no longer put it off.

    Hi, Mitchell -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Question - do you want to also keep OSX 10.4 after you install 10.5? Or is your goal to have only 10.5 plus the ability to boot to OS 9?
If you do not retain OSX 10.4 -
As you seem to be aware, OSX 10.5 does not support Classic. Therefore, there is no point in keeping OS 9 on the same volume as OSX.
You can relocate OS 9 to a different drive, either the other internal ATA drive or one of the SCSI drives, via a drag-and-drop (Finder copy) process. If it were me, I'd pick the other inernal drive for OS 9 - although SCSI speeds are generally excellent, they can be a bit more tempermental than ATA drives.
The result may not even need blessing - if the copied System Folder displays the Mac OS glyph on it, it is blessed. Copy also the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder, the Documents folder that OS 9 created, and all the rest of your OS 9 stuff (don't overlook things lying on the desktop).
About the only tweaking needed would be to 'fix' any aliases in use - copies of those will continue to point to originals on the source drive. These aliases can include one for Shelock in the Apple Menu Items folder in System Folder; perhaps a few in the Application Support folder in System Folder; plus any you have made for your own needs.
Test boot to that copied OS 9 before removing the original from the source drive.
Provided that is satisfactory, you can remove OS 9 from the source drive, then update that drive from OSX 10.4 to 10.5.
Note 1 - as an alternate you could relocate OSX and its programs to a different drive, but this is more difficult in that it involves using a cloning utility, and removing all of its stuff from what would then be the OS 9 drive can be difficult. It's easier to move OS 9.
Note 2 - in this scenario (OSX 10.4 replaced), since OS 9 could no longer be used as Classic, you can remove certain files from the OS 9 System Folder that are used only when it is run as Classic. These files are - Classic, Classic Support, and Classic Support UI (all usually located loose in the System Folder); Classic RAVE (in Extensions folder); and ProxyApp (someplace - location seems to vary). The result would be an OS 9 System Folder suitable for booting, but not for use as Classic.
If you do retain OSX 10.4 -
I would suggest installing OSX 10.5 on its own drive and leave the original OSX 10.4 + OS 9 drive as-is. This may necessitate re-installing some software on the 10.5 drive, since OSX seems to be a bit more fussy (than OS 9) about having its programs on the same volume as the OS.

  • Adding 1TB HD to G4 800 MHz - will it work?

Hi, I recently purchased a brand new 1 TB HD for my G4, but when I try to format it, it says the new drive in only 128 GB. How do I get my G4 to recognize this wonderfully large hard drive and format it correctly?
    Thank you!

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
Your machine is a Quicksilver Dual 800? If so, the onboard controller won't support over 128gb hard drives,
To use a larger drive, you will need a PCI controller card. Something like the following will do nicely:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/SIIG/SCMP4A12/
There is a software option, which will allow full use of the drive. However, the recommended partitioning scheme needs to be followed for best results:

  • RAID 0 on Quicksilver

I have a plain vanilla Quicksilver, DP 800 MHz, right now has 2 80 GB ATA HDDs.
One of the drives it is failing on and off, with no pattern. These are old driver, like 8 years of so, that came with the box when I got it second hand.
I'm planning on replacing the drives with a new pair, and I wonder if I can -thru Disk Utility when re-installing- setup a RAID 0, spanning the 2 drives onto a huge 160 GB one (minus the format).
This will be done with Tiger and I don't haven any special adapter nor card, I wonder if it can be done using only Disk Utility; I know about the implications of using RAID 0 (one HDD dies, take the whole thing with it) but I can make backups to an external drive, and to a remote server with SSH + rsync.
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi hictio;
Rather then replacing the drives with 80 HDDs and the creating a RAID array, I would suggest that you simply get much larger HDDs that are now available to replace the old one. By going this way you avoid all of the problems with RAID. You can then have your system and applications on one drive and your project files on the other to share the workload between both drives.

  • Video card starting to misbehave in Quicksilver 2002

A few days ago I noticed while in iTunes there was a 5 second period when a few inches of my display wasn't refreshing properly. I started shutting down applications but the thing disappeared. I just continued working and all was fine for several days.
Last night I left my computer on with sleep mode set and the screen saver on. This morning I came in and the screensaver was frozen there with a kernel panic message superimposed on it. In particular I noticed in the last backtrace "NVIDIA".
The computer is left on 24/7 and I am actually semi-engaged in using it almost 12 hours/day. These (so far) are relatively rare events.
Some history. I just started using this machine about 5 days ago. I transplanted my two hard drives out of my Quicksilver dual 800 and just booted it up. It has an added 5 port USB card. It was tucked in the slot next to the video card and I moved it to the center slot to allow for better air circulation. I didn't even touch the video card when doing this. Oh, I asked the original owner if there were issues but he said none but he hadn't used it in a while.
First, I cannot seem to find a panic log about this event, nor the one a few days ago. My /Library/Logs/panic.log only has two brief entries from two weeks ago, both of which probably took place in my old computer.

    Quartz Extreme: Supported

    Status: No display connected
Question: Why no panic log for either event? The first one wasn't a full-blown KP, so am I looking in the wrong place? Last night was definitely a KP, but I had to use the tiny button to unfreeze the computer so maybe it never got logged.
Suggestions as to measures to take? Will Apple Hardware Test test this, especially since it is relatively infrequent. Would re-seating the card help? Any history of issues in this card?
If this gets worse, any recommendations as to a replacement card? I don't have need for anything high-powered and I spent $100 for the computer so I would prefer not to spend $200 on a video card. Could I take the card out of my other Quicksilver?

Well, it happened again (about 3 days between occurrences), and this time it left a log.
Both occurrences happened when I was away. The first time my girlfriend says she pressed a keyboard button to wake the screen and there was a kernel panic superimposed on the screensaver background. This most recent time I came into the room and the screen had the screensaver with a restart your mac message on it. In both cases I left the Mac on with sleep set to happen in about an hour. In the second case at least it looks like it never got that far. In the first case the screen was dark but the message was superimposed on the screensaver background. Could this just be the screensaver causing this (along with a poor card)?

  • Good place to get upgrades for a Quicksilver

I just picked up a Quicksilver G4 800. I am looking to get some upgrades for it. I am looking at get a dual 1ghz but I would also like to upgrade the video card and add sata drives to it. Where is a good place to get mac upgrades and what is a good card for the quicksilver. I do a lot of video stuff.

If you run Tiger on your systems, the nVidia GeForce 6200 AGP video card with 256 MB shared memory is a popular one, because it is optimized for Quartz Extreme and Core Image. nVidia never made a Mac version; but many East Asian cards with flashed ROMs can be found on eBay, others on Amazon.

The above example claims hardware support for OpenGL, Core Video, and Core Animation, making it suitable for Leopard. I cannot confirm these claims. Mine (from eBay) came with an audio VGA adapter and digital DMI adapter.
