Quicksilver G4 Dual 1ghz power supply...

I'm pretty sure that the power supply in my Quicksilver G4 Dual 1ghz is going. Initially, I was only getting the familiar bong for startup, but nothing else. I then noted that the fan on the GForce Ti card wasn't spinning, nor the fan on the optical drive. I removed the Ti card, my second hard drive, and two RAM chips; the computer started, then shut down. I pushed the power button, it finally started. The fan on the optical drive is still not spinning (still plugged in though.)
I did buy a new motherboard battery, put it in, and followed the process of resetting the CUDA/PMU. I did that before doing the above so I know the battery is fine.
That's why I'm almost sure it's the power supply.
So, my question is, where and how do I go about purchasing a new power supply for this computer? Any help and/or suggestions would be most appreciated.

If you are extermly confident with a multi meter you might try the following procedure. However, be sure to use appropriate ESD procedures as "static" can kill your machine and be sure to take care as electircal power can kill you.
PS verfication:
1. Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver/QuickSilver 2002) (see Figure 3): Connect the black lead of the volt meter to pin 11 of the 22pin power supply connector. Connect the red lead of the volt meter to pin 22 of the power supply connector. The volt meter should measure approximately +25V. If you do not get a reading of +25V, re-check the volt meter connections and measure the voltage again. If voltage is still not present, replace the power supply; otherwise, go to the next step. If you do measure +25V on pin 22, the power supply is likely OK. Go to the next step for further verification.
Start up the computer by pressing the power button on the front of the computer. Note: Verify that the power cable is plugged into connector J30. If the computer starts up normally, the power supply is OK. If the computer does not start up, go to the next step.
2. Check to see if the power supply fan is spinning. If it is not, go to the next step.
3. Connect the black lead of the volt meter to pin 16 of the power supply connector for AGP and PCI models or pin 11 for Gigabit Ethernet/Digital Audio/QuickSilver/QuickSilver 2002 models. Connect the red lead of the volt meter to pin 1 of the power supply connector. The volt meter should measure approximately +3.3V.
If you do not get a reading of +3.3V, re-check the volt meter connections and measure the voltage again. If voltage is still not present, replace the power supply; otherwise, go to the next step.
4. Connect the black lead of the volt meter to pin 16 of the power supply connector for AGP and PCI models or pin 11 for Gigabit Ethernet/DIgital Audio/QuickSilver/QuickSilver 2002 models. Connect the red lead of the volt meter to pin 4 of the power supply connector. The volt meter should measure approximately +5V. If you do not get a reading of +5V, re-check the volt meter connections and measure the voltage again. If voltage is still not present, replace the power supply; otherwise, go to the next step.
5. Measure the voltage of pin 10 on the power supply connector. The voltage should measure approximately +12V. If you do not get a reading of +12V, re-check the volt meter connections and measure the voltage again. If voltage is still not present, replace the power supply; otherwise, go to the next step.
6.The testing is complete. You have just verified that the power supply is not the cause of the “No apparent power” symptom.

    Hey Everyone,
    I recently discovered my Power Mac QuickSilver G4 (M8360LL/A -- http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G4Quicksilver.html) has a dead fan within the power supply. Running an open-case test shows all other fans are working fine. Currently I have a high RPM floor fan blowing A/C air directly into/against the rear of the chassis.
    I've done some research on my options, but would like some help making the best choice:
    (1) Purchase a replacement power supply.
    (2) Install a replacement fan directly into the power supply since it still appears to be functioning normally.
    (3) Purchase a cheaper alternative, but compatible power supply?
    I'll discuss my research into each possibility in order:
    (1) I've found a small number of sites selling replacement power supplies for the QuickSilver G4 systems (shipping not factored into the prices I'm listing):

    (2) I'm not confident enough to attempt a fan replacement, and since the power supply fan has been dead for an unknown length of time, I'm not entirely confident it hasn't been damaged from excessive heat. If anyone has a link or useful document that explains how to replace the power supply fan safely, I'd be open to the option. Right now, the most information I currently have is the physical specifications of the original fan (correct me if I'm wrong!):
    Protechnic 80x80x25mm MAGIC (made by Sechang Micro)
    12 Volt, 0.24 Amp
    38.27 CFM, 3000 RPM (max), 29 dBA
    P/N: MGA8012HS
    I would probably want a better alternative if I went this route, since I didn't expect the fan to die quite this soon (although I generally run my system 24/x7).

    However, I've limited experience with voltage requirements and I don't know anything about the physical connector or dimensions of the power supply itself. At best, I know the model of my power supply is 614-0157 and can max out at 344 W.
    If anyone has input and suggestions to help me fully explore my options, I'd really appreciate it. Otherwise I'll land on safe ground by buying an entire replacement of the same model, swap it out, and be done with it.

    I decided to purchase a replacement power supply from DV Warehouse, since it was the cheapest vendor I could find selling the part as new.
    When time permits, I intend to open the original power supply cover to see how challenging it would be to replace the fan. When I do, I'll add more about it to this thread.
    One thing I'm noticing with this power supply fan while it's still in use with my system: If I push on a fan blade with a plastic stick while the system is powered up, I'll see the fan revolve a little (very slowly) before stopping. Not sure if that can be a useful clue as to which component within the power supply could have failed.
    PB PM - About your earlier comment to blowing A/C air against the back of the case being more of a hinderance than helpful, is that true even when the component has no assisted airflow at all? In other words, my logic in using a floor fan to force colder air into the power supply is to help cool the components within it since there is otherwise only natural airflow to help keep the PS from overheating.

    Hi Andrea,
    unluckily the instrument driver for your Power Supply is not available on NI site.
    You can try to search the driver at link: Search Instrument Driver
    Otherwise you could ask information about driver directly to the instrument constructor.
    But if you know the commands to talk with instrument and if you are using Labview or Measurement Studio or LabWindows/CVI 7.x you can easily create the communication with the Power Supply through the Instrument Assistant.

  • G5 Powermac Dual Core Power Supply Issue

    My G5 Dual Core 2.3 GHz was working fine till this morning when at about 6:00 AM the power supply started making a bunch of noise. Luckily I was at home not at work so I pulled the plug...waited a while, powered on again, saw the apple logo and decided to turn it off till I get it fixed.
    This is the third G5 I have with power supply issues. The first one was a dual processor that hums when doing a lot of networking or when attaching USB flash drives...so apparently there was a extension program on that one. I sold that and switched to the dual core machine, then both of the dual cores had power supply issues. One got replaced under Apple Care. The 3rd one just had the issue happen.
    Anybody having bad luck with these? My old G4 DP 1.42 has been running almost flawlessly since it came out (only replaced the main fan for a more powerful and quieter unit).
    Have the power supplies for the Dual Core G5 machines been redesigned or should I expect my new one to fail again?

    I'm sorry. You did note that with your first G5 you knew of the extension program. Too early in the day for me I guess. Personally I haven't sensed from the G5 discussions that Power Supplies have been a major continuing issue, but there certainly have been a lot reported. Usually it's Logic Boards that keep getting fried for one reason or another. Fortunately it doesn't seem to be the most expensive thing to replace, especially if you buy a used one. Maybe someone will chime in who is more observant then I am this morning.
    For what it's worth I still have the first Mac I ever bought which is a PM8500. It still runs fine whenever I pull it out from it's dusty storage. By contrast this is my third G5.
    Edit: Up early and fasting for a test... I just caught your reference to 3 years. That time frame I have seen a lot here, usually 3 years plus a few months, just out of Applecare. Apparently for G5s thats like 90 in Mac years.

    Hello,
    There is no way to get +/- 10 V from the SCXI-1520. I recommend either using an external power supply, or the unused AO channels on your DAQ device to provide these voltages. To make use of the unused AO channels, you can either use a SCXI-1180 Feedthrough panel with a SCXI-1302 terminal block, or a 50-pin ribbon cable connected to a CB-50. Both of these simply give you access to the unused pins on the DAQ device (AI 1..N, AO 0..N, CTR, etc...).

    Ok, thanks to Steve & Roberto I now know exactly how to install a replacement Power Supply for my PM G5.
    Now, as Apple will not sell me the part as it is not a user replaceable part, does anyone have any recommendations as to where I might be able to find a Power Supply ? I've searched the web but haven't been able to locate a new one nor am I certain that any of the sources I've managed to find are reputable.

  • Alternative power supply?

    I am sad to announce the death of the 360w Power supply in my dual 1Ghz Power mac MDD, they are difficult to find and expensive and I wonder if anyone has successfully found an alternative? I have found that a standard 400w ATX PSU can supply all the voltages needed except the +25vsb. Does anyone know what that particular supply does (it is the white wire).

  • Quicksilver dual 1GHz 2002 powers off for no reason.

    My Quicksilver dual 1GHz 2002 powers off for no reason. Could it be because of overheating? I can run it for an hour or 2 and then it simply powers off as if the electricity went off. No warning, no process. I can wait 30 min and power it up for maybe 10 min and the same thing. Does anyone know what may be causing this? There are some logic bd problems too. It will not shut down. I must hold the power button down until it goes off, and to start it up, I must unplug it f power then replug it into the wall to start it up. Yes it is time for a new one, but this one would be nice as a 2nd Mac.

    Hello! Look in apps>utilities>console and see if it's throwing a crash log that might narrow down the problem. It could be a weak power supply that's failing when it gets warmed up or a fan that has quit. Tom

    I need to know how dual power supply works, I mean, when you have two power supplies in a router if both of them are working at the same time, or if one of them is working while the other one only begin to work when the first one stops.

    The implementation details can potentially differ per product category but usually the following is applicable:
    The product provides configurable power redundancy modes and choosing a mode dictates whether load will be shared across supplies or whether a particular supply will be dedicated for redundancy.
    If both (or more) supplies are working at the same time then both share the power load.
    The actual power consumption depends on the power required to run the installed components and is the same whether you use power supplies in redundant or power sharing mode.

  • G5 Dual 2.5 Power Supply Replacement?

    Hi, I tried searching for this, but there seems to be no information available for my particular model. Last week, I had the dreaded power supply failure for an out of warranty, June 2004 G5 Dual 2.5 Ghz. I brought in to a repair shop, and they ordered a new power supply for it. But I was told today that the they can't seem to locate any detailed documentation on this particular computer. My own searches have turned up the same (although plenty of documentation on other, different G5's).
    As it stands, no one can seem to figure out how to access the power supply, which seems to be placed between the "floor" of the interior, and the actual bottom of the case. Does anyone know where to find the right instructions/documentation, or know themselves how to pull this sucker apart? I'd be eternally grateful for any help.

    As you can see it's quite an undertaking - the risk of damaging something much more expensive than the PSU is high. Which is why, I guess, people let the shop have the problem of fixing anything they break...

  • Correct SDRAM, and what is the ram ceiling in a Dual 1Ghz Quicksilver?

    Hello all,
    Thanks for helping me with my optical drive question earlier. I now would like to ask about ram. At present my G4 1GHz is running OSX Tiger on 256Mb ram. Things run ok, but they could definitely be better.
    My G4 is one of the older Quicksilver models and uses SDRAM as opposed to DDR. Specifically it requires:
    SDRAM, PC133 • CL=3 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • 133MHz
    At first I thought I could simply transfer the larger ram sticks from my old G4 400MHz sawtooth, but the Quicksilver is very picky and doesn’t like any of them. I thought it would be backwards compatible and just slow everything down to the slowest speed memory stick (PC100 in this case), but no... it just didn’t like them full stop! (on a side note, I’ve checked and all 3 memory slots on the Quicksilver work fine, nothing defective there).
    Once again working on a shoestring I would like to ram up that memory to 1Gb or 1.5Gb as I have a disc for Leopard and I would like to upgrade to that sometime soon.
    So, looking on eBuyer I can see what’s described as ‘Generic’ 512MB PC133 168pin Extra Value SDRAM for £11.99 which I see as great value (here's the link). The only thing I cannot tell is if its the CL=3 variety. This means two questions:
    1) Is 1.5Gb the max ram limit for a January 2002 G4 Dual 1Ghz Quicksilver, or is that simply Apple’s ram ceiling at the time? Have people put in say, 2.5Gb on these machines?
    2) Is ‘generic’ ram a complete no-no for these machines? I really can’t see why not, but I’m not that knowledgeable either.

    The QS didn't like PC100 because it has a 133mhz system bus. You can use PC133 in a machine with a 100mhz bus, but not conversely.
    The max RAM is still three 512MB modules for a total of 1.5GB. That model isn;t one that can exceed the original specs.
    2) Is ‘generic’ ram a complete no-no for these machines?
    Unless identified as suitable for Mac, most of the generic stuff turns out to be for PC. The site you linked does not provide enough support info, and Googling the "manufacturer's part number" doesn't lead to a manufacturer site, just a bunch of circular references back to the seller's site. Suspicious
    You should probably call the seller and ask for someone who knows Mac RAM. In addition to being unbuffered and non-parity, it needs to be low-density.
    With such a paucity of key Mac metrics, that listing makes be very nervous. I know RAm is expensive in teh UK based on a lot of psots all over Apple Discussions, but you have to find someone who knows Mac RAM.
    There is a great free tool for checking whether any Mac can handle more RAM than the original specs showed. It's the MacTracker database and is here:

    I couldn't work these forums without it. It shows all the facts and specs of the machine, and always indicates if the original RAM specs can be exceed. For example, for the USB 2.0 eMacs, its Memory entry is:
    2.0 GB (Actual) 1.0 GB (Apple)

  • 3750X, Dual Power Supply, 1 in 110V and 1 in 208V

    I have a Cisco WS-C3750X-12S swith with dual C3KX-PWR-350WAC power supplies that are both currently connected to 110V PDUs.  We are being forced to migrate over to new 208V PDUs and I would like to know if it is possible to run this switch with one power supply connected to a 110V feed and the other power supply connected to a 208V feed?
    I assume this will work as both power supplies are auto sensing and are rated for any input between 110V - 240V.  Would there be any potential issues with this configuration?
    This will only be needed for one week while the second 208V PDU is connected.  I will need to migrate one PS to 208V, wait for the second PDU to be installed in my rack, and then move the second PS to 208V.
    I was hoping to be able to migrate without having to reboot the switch as this would require a maintenance window and downtime for an important connection.

    That should be fine, I've seen customers actually run this in production for quite some time.  You should be able to migrate this without downtime as long as you are not running a large number of POE devices that are reliant on XX amount of power at one time.

    Please tell me that is it possible to see in CiscoWorks that device with dual power supplies is using both or just one. e.g 6500
    Also I need to count the total number of physical switches in the company but I am only able to generate a inventory report that only shows logical devices, but it do not show if the switch is stack then how many physical switches are in stack.
    Is it also possible to count the total number of physical devices in the company instead of just logical devices.

    In the detailed device view I am able to see that switch has 2 power supply, but but unable to see that its using either only one or both. But I understand your point that if its not visible here then its not possible.
    Explainantion of my second query: My company want to know that how many physical switches has been installed. We manage over 2500 logical switches in the company and management want to have a report showing that how many total physical switches exist.
    Is it possible to generate a report which shows that each logical switch contains how many physical swithes and/ or total number of physical switches in the company. 
    e.g MLS001 (logical switch) contains sw1 (physical switch), sw2 (physical switch), sw3 (physical switch), sw4 (physical switch)
         MLS002 (logical switch) contains sw1 (physical switch), sw2 (physical switch)
    CiscoWorks generate a report shows that 6 physical switches exist.

  • 1.8Ghz & Dual 2.0Ghz Logic Boards/Power Supply

    I have a perfectly fine working 1.8ghz G5. I also have a dual 2.0Ghz G5. However, the dual doesn't power up. I'm pretty sure it's the power supply. But, I'm not positive.
    My question is. Is it possible to put the dual 2.0 logic board into my 1.8ghz machine? The inside of the cases look very similar. Or is there a way to test the logic board of the 2.0 before I take everything apart?

    The CPU speed of a PowerMac G5 is always 2x the bus speed or less. Thus, with the 900 MHz bus speed of the 1.8 GHz motherboard, your 2.0 GHz CPUs would clock down to 1.8 GHz at best.

  • Quicksilver Dual 1GHz PCI Slot Usage

    I just purchased this QS off eBay, and have developed the following configuration under OS X 10.3.9:
    Slot 1 GeForce4 MX
    Slot 2 ATTO ExpressPCIProUL3d with 50GB Seagate
    Slot 3 Sonnet Tango FW/USB
    Slot 4 M-Audio 2496
    Slot 5 Sonnet ATA100 with a Maxtor 60GB attached
    I'm running the OS and most applications off a Seagate pATA 120GB attached to the motherboard ATA channel. It is new and of the 7200.9 model.
    Is this an optimal arrangement? or does it matter?
    Heatwise, the 50GB drive is warmer (and thicker) than the others, so I put it into the middle floor bay. It is an SCA type and has an adapter on it, which makes it close when the door is closed ... close to the main set of powercables that are bundled together towards the middle, and plugged into the motherboard. Maybe too close?
    The ATA cable to the Maxtor and the SCSI cable to the Seagate SCA are clothes-pinned separately to neaten the cabling.
    Any comments?
    One additional observation: My external power light has 2+ levels of brightness as I power up the QS ... is this normal? or am I taxing the power supply (or is this a sign of a weak power supply)?

    Assuming a maximum of 15 watts per card gives a max of 75 watts for the PCI bus.<br>
