Quicktime 10.4 opens a movie folder at startup, help!!!

Hey guys, this is the most annoying thing ever...every time i open my quicktime on Yosemite 10.10.1 (quicktime version is 10.4 (833)) the movie folder opens up, so i have to manually shut it in order to do something else, ie. record screen, audio, etc. Can anyone please help me stop the folder from opeining up automatically.
System is Yosemite 10.10.1 and mac is imac 27in mid 2011.
cheers!

The flashing question mark means that a valid bootable drive wasn't found. On one extreme this can mean the drive is completely non-functional. On the other extreme it can mean that there's nothing wrong with the drive but a vital file is damaged or missing. In the latter case disk diagnostics might report that the disk was fixed or even that there was nothing wrong with it. Disk Utility doesn't look at every file to make sure it is okay - it examines the drive's directory to make sure it is valid. The drive's directory can be valid even if it isn't bootable.
In your case the best course is probably to attempt performing an Archive & Install.

If the videos are .wmv files, VLC from VideoLAN will play them and pretty much any other media format.

  • I cannot open my movies folder after enabling sharing

    Hello,
I recently purchased the mac mini server with osx 10.8.4. I changed some folder settings on this computer to include file sharing (guests with read only access etc.) - some through finder and some through the server app. This includes the main "Movies" folder which is on a partition called "Server HD".
My first clue that something has screwed up is when the file sharing pane within the server application went all grey, and it added another folder with the name "Movies-1" (with the exact same icon that you would normally see in your library - the one with the reel on it).
My second clue was when my guest computer (also mac mini - older, which could read all my other shares including iphoto and other folders) would say "cannot find the original folder" each time i clicke on the Movies folder.
Now I'm stuck - I can't change the settings on the main mac, it says "you have unknown permissions".
An ls -el or ls -l both deny me any access to who owns this folder / group etc. Results pasted below:
    bpmac:~ bpingali$ ls -l
    ls: Movies: Permission denied
    total 0
    drwx------+  5 bpingali  staff   170 Jun 27 19:25 Desktop

I tried removing DS_store to no avail
    bpmac:~ bpingali$ rm ~/Movies/.DS_Store
I just get a dialog saying "you do not have permission to access its contents" when i double click.
Please help! This is a super new computer with lots of content in that folder which I would love to be sharing on my home network over this weekend!
    Thanks in advance.

    Back up all data.
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    sudo chmod -R -N Movies
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning.
If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ask for instructions.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear. Test.

  • Quicktime Does Not Open All Movies

I have a video that was made in 1997, stored on a 1.44MB diskette, and now I'm trying to open it with Quicktime. Quicktime simply comes up with a white screen but goes through the automation.
The Type is "MooV' and the Creator is "TVOD". I have never heard of this type or creator. I have tried several different applications that work with videos without success. I know the video is there as some of the video applications show a proper thumbnail image of whats in the movie.
I would like to translate this to Quicktime. Some of the older software allowed this.
    Can anyone help me?
    Bud

You can try VisualHub from Techspansion:
    http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/
Also, try dragging the file on top of RealPlayer 10 while holding
down both  and Option (Apple Option) keys. RealPlayer is supposed
to be able to handle QuickTime files, it may even be able to open some
supported files that the current version of QuickTime will not open.
    RealPlayer is available here:
    https://order.real.com/pt/order.html?country=US&language=EN&mppi=0&mpposlist=0&mpst=0&ppath=cpmacpl060204a&pageregion=player_button&pcode=rn&opage=realh ome_spmac_bb&src=realhome_spmac_bb_0_1_1_0_0_20
( If the above link does not work, go to the front page, http://www.real.com/ , and select the blue button near the top right, " RealPlayer - Free " ).
If you are not able to open it with either of the two suggestions above, you can send me the file, and I will try to open it. I am almost sure that I can find a way to open it.
    Hope this helps, take care.

to see if additional software is available that will enable QuickTime Player to open the movie

Generally, this requires installing Perian, or the free version of Flip4Mac if the movie is an unprotected WMV file, or using VLC. Some formats, such as protected WMV files, can't be played in Mac OS X.

  • Beyond the flashing Finder/Folder at startup help, please

I have a G4-867 updated with a Giga Dual 1.33 processor + 1.5G RAM, a SATA PCI expansion card with 2 internal HD's (250G & 750G), one with 10.4.9, the larger with 10.4.10. Also, a firewire/USB expansion card. Software UTD, permissions repaired, PRAM reset. Tech Tool Pro finds no problems. No problems with this set up for >2 years.
Recently, system seems to be sluggish & I'm having to force quit applications with some increasing frequency. The "You need to restart your mac" grey box came up once ~1 week ago.
Today after a force quit & several reboots (including PRAM reset), the flashing folder/finder continually re-appeared at start-up. When rebooting with "option" depressed, the 2 HD's with OS 10 are recognized, can be selected & start-up occurs.
Is this a sign of the SATA PCI card starting to fail, is a RAM chip potentially a culprit, the USB/firewire PCI card or is one of the HD's starting to fail. Or something else?
    Comments/suggestions appreciated!

    Hi
The flashing folder at startup may be normal after a PRAM reset. I'd imagine the OS X startup disk choice must be held in the PRAM, it can't be held on the disk otherwise it would be a catch-22. If you'd left it for a while it may have eventually found a bootable volume and started up okay. You'd then have to reselect the startup disk in the relevant OS X system preference.
In terms of freezing applications and kernel panics, I'd start by checking the basics. To ensure it's not heat related I'd check all the ventilation holes are free from dust etc and all the fans (case, power supply and processor) are still spinning. You could try using the computer with the case open temporarily to check this, which may also result in it running cooler anyway. To ensure it's not memory related I'd remove any third party DIMMs, and then finally the factory installed DIMM by swapping it out for one of the others. I assume you still have plenty of free space on the hard drives, especially the one containing OS X? Ideally I'd always try and keep at least 5GB free on the boot volume for the virtual memory and temporary files etc.
I hope this gives you a few starting points.

  • QT7 Pro crashes trying to open .m4v movie files...Help!

I just purchased QT 7 Pro. I also use Handbrake to pull content off DVDs (I work in the film industry). I ripped several 5 min. scenes in Handbrake and they encode as .m4v files. I want to shorten and re-encode them for use on a website. I'd like to do this in QT 7 Pro, but it crashes trying to open any of these .m4v files. I tried renaming the file extension to .mov or mp4, but no luck.
I assumed this would be simple, seeing that QT is obviously mpeg4 compatible and .m4v is the iTunes format extension for movies. Any help out there?

Try Wondershare Video Converter. They also make Wondershare DVD Ripper and I believe you can choose what format the resulting video is be made into. They also make Wondershare DVD Copy

I have tried on both my imacs and neither of them will open. It is really frusturating. Is there another program I should download?

  • Quicktime does not convert my .MOV file into a watchable format on Quicktime

    Hi guys!
I won't give you all a long sob story but basically, I went to my first music festival over the weekend and uploaded my videos onto my friends computer, I then uploaded these videos (i took with my iPhone) to Google Drive. When i got back onto my own computer, I download the .MOV files from Google Drive, these videos would not convert into a watchable format. It gives me the message -
"QuickTime Player can't open "IMG_8788.MOV". To see if additional software is available that will enable QuickTime Player to open the movie, click Tell Me More."
It says that Quicktime should support MOV files. I am using version 10.3 Quicktime player with iOS Mavericks. I really want help with this issue as I will be devastated if these videos are lost. My friend obviously deleted them off his computer because they did take up alot of space!

iPhone recorded files should already be compatible QT X v10.3 (and QL) as is in the MOV file container. However, the process of downloading, uploading, and again downloading the files may have created some sort of issue causing QT X to not properly "recognize" the content and thus, wants you to check for additional support.
In any case, will the files open in any other media players? (E.g., VLC, MPlayerX, NicePlayer, QT 7, MPEG Streamclip, etc.) For instance, if the files open in QT 7 Pro, MPEG Streamclip, or VLC, you may be able to copy the data to a new MOV file container which QT X will open and play. (I.e., this procedure does not recompress the data and is reasonable quick. Also not sure if using the "Command-D" Finder option to "duplicate" the file will create a "readable" file or not but you might try it.)

  • Quicktime file wont open in keynote

    hello,
I have a quicktime (olderversion) i need to give to a friend who has Tiger with quicktime 7 and keynote.
he wants to open the quicktime in keynote and use for a presentation.
anyone know why it wont open in keynote??/

Open the file (on your machine) using QuickTime Player. Open the Movie Info window and note the type of file format (.avi, .mpg etc.) and the sound and video codecs used.
If you find third party codecs (Divx etc.) the Keynote user will need those codecs before they can view the file. Once it can be displayed using QT Keynote should also be able to import the file.

  • Error opening .avi movie file

When I try to open an .avi movie in quicktime I get a message that says:
"Error opening movie. The movie could not be opened." How can I open the movie? Or can I? Thanks...
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    turtle007 & Mew Gull,
    To Apple Discussions!
Open the file with QuickTime Player.
Open the Movie Info window (Command-i).
Note the name of the video codec used in the file.
Do a Google.com search for codec name +Mac and download one appropriate for your OS and computer.
Quit and relaunch QuickTime after installing the new codec.
    Try the file again.
Thanks to QuickTimeKirk for the above info.
If the above does not work, then use VLC Media Player or Perian (AVI and FLV support)

    Hi
One Must NEVER move or alter any folders named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Projects - or - alike
on DESKTOP/FINDER - Ever ! - ONLY Within the iMovie Program ! else all connections are broken and hard to impossibly to mend !
but rather do as described here under
    Moving Event's and Project's
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
    A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
    B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
    C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly
    D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
    E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this into Events.
Event's window can show two faces
    Like this
    or like this
from one hard disk Event - You can move it to the other hard disk
You can not (at least not me) move Event to Project or other way around only
Event to Event and Project to Project
    Yours Bengt W

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Preferences/com.apple.quicktimeplayer.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
You might need to redo the View settings after an update.

  • Hi when i open my application folder, all the application is shown in trash folder. when i click the application it says this app is in trash first move it out. and when i try to open through finder go it says this file doesn't exist. can some1 plz help?

hi when i open my application folder, all the application is shown in trash folder. when i click the application it says this app is in trash first move it out. and when i try to open through finder> go it says this file doesn't exist. can some1 plz help? how can i put all my application through application folder?

Something really odd is going on. In your first screen shot, I noticed that the Applications folder does not have the proper icon displayed in the side bar. Also, in the title bar it lists it as Applications 08-59-29-909.
Not sure where it's picking up that odd name, unless it's because it's still truly within the Trash folder.
Try this. In the Finder > Preferences > General > turn on "Always open folders in a new window". (I have a feeling you have the default setting with this off).
Now, in Finder > Go > move down and open the Applications Folder from there. Now open the folder where you see all your applications that you show in your screen shot, select all, and move them to this true appliactions folder.
This is what you should properly seeing (but with different apps listed):
See how the Applications folder has the icon of the letter A shaped with a pencil, ruler & pen.
