QuickTime 10 fails to export Apple Animation video

I'm attempting to export a movie from QuickTime 10, without success.
The movie is currently a QuickTime with the Animation codec in 256 greys, 720p, 24 fps, 159.20 MBit/s, 3.58 GB.
On trying to use 'Save As...' or 'Save for Web..' QuickTime immediately makes the folder and HTML files, but only creates a 4kb .mov file.
Any suggestions appreciated.

If it's still there in QuickTime as a compression format to author with then it should really be supported
Snow Leopard has a dual 32-bit/64-bit QT framework embedded in the operating system. The most likely problem at this time is that error trapping has yet to be incorporated into the QT X Player and so it currently does not prevent the unwary user from attempting to convert Animation files to other formats. This is essentially the same problem experienced in iMovie '08/'09 where the application would allow users to import Animation source files into a project but their export only produced a "black" display area with sound. No warning was provided here either.
As QTKirk already indicated, QT 7 "Pro" is the product of 19 years of QT development and remains fully compatible with the Animation work flow. Basically, if you wish to maintain compatibility with your Animation files, use QT 7 "Pro" or, if you don't have a Pro key, download and use a free QT Pro substitute application like MPEG Streamclip. The choice is yours.

  • QuickTime fails to export

For some reason, my system suddenly stopped exporting from QuickTime. I first noticed it last night when I was rendering something from After Effects using the Photo-JPEG codec. It didn't work. Then I tried exporting an animation-compressed movie to H.264 in QuickTime Pro. That failed immediately with an error "-43." In fact exporting to any codec fails.
I tried doing the export using a brand new user, and that seemed to fix the problem. So obviously it's something in my user folder.
Here's what I've already tried but with no luck:
    1) deleted all preferences with "QuickTime" in name
    2) re-installed QuickTime using the standalone installer
Any ideas on what that could be?

I just came in here to report the very same thing, except in my case it may be due to the very large number of (approx 1000) frames in the movie I've created.
I successfully did smaller versions of the same thing (a series of same size/format logos) but it just goes through the motions (saying it is creating a 9.8mb movie) and saves nothing.
Is there some unstated upper limit on the number of frames when making a slideshow?
I've said it before but Quicktime is the one of the most poorly written and documented Apple apps I've encountered. The amount of time I have wasted on doing even the simplest things...

  • Quicktime fails to export video

Hi, I have quicktime pro and was trying to export some videos for my iPhone. I'm having trouble with certain movies and i'm not sure why. They are all in the same format (H.264), but some of the videos won't export video, just the audio portion. When i try to play the exported video it just shows up as a black screen with the audio playing. anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

    i have the same problem!
it's frustrating the heck out of me
i think it started after the last update of iTunes & Quicktime
i can't export my videos to .m4v anymore to get them to play on ipod
i guess the encoder is broken
the option in - iTunes/advanced/make iphone compatible file - won't work - it just gives the same white video and the sound is fine.
streamclip won't work - it just fails using that encoder
i really really want to fix this!
    it used to work fine
i've even tried deleting quicktime and its folder of encoders in /Library/
and then reinstalling but that hasn't helped!

  • Keynote export to Quicktime fails with any animation

I'm making recordings of Keynote slideshows, and I keep running into the same problem: any time I include an animation, of any sort, the export to Quicktime fails. Any advice?
Specifically, regardless of the format (whether it's an animated GIF, a Quicktime movie, or ???), I have the animation set to begin immediately, on transition. I can see it animating while I'm talking. When I export it to Quicktime, my voice continues, but Keynote remains stuck on the first frame. Sometimes it does animate a little bit, toward the end of the time that I'm on the slide, but regardless, voice and video sync are way, way off for the rest of the movie.
Has anyone else encountered this and fixed it? I've seen one person be advised to export using fixed timing, but that's not an option for me: the amount of time I spend on the different slides varies quite a bit.

Yeah, it's pretty simple- with your keynote slideshow open, just open quicktime player, go to "file" then "new screen recording". A little box will open with a record button. Press record, and then play your slideshow in keynote from the beginning. You will have to wait and let it record in real time. After it is done, it will prompt you to save it as a quicktime movie. Then you just have to open iMovie, click "import" and then select the quicktime movie you just made. Then click the musical note button on the lower right, select the mp3 of the VO track or music that you want to use, and drag that onto the timeline. You should right-click and select "detach audio" so you can move it around and get the timing you need. Then just "finalize project" and you're done! Easy-peezie.
And I have no idea about future keynote updates...overall it's a nice program but the exporting problems definitely need to be addressed.

  • Save/export PS animation as video; transparent areas always render as black?

    Hello all,
Thank you in advance for taking the time with this; I'm sure there's a very simple solution to this problem, and I've scoured all the help files and forums, and tried the suggestions, to no avail. Please help?
    Here's the problem;
I've created an animation in PS CS5, 139 frames, of a logo on transparent background. The colours (24 bit) within the logo change gradually during the animation. Each layer has transparent background, and I've saved an Alpha channel as well.
I want to save it as a video, so that I can use it in an interactive presentation that I want to create in InDesign.
Can't do it as an animated Gif; 256 colours dithered, don't look good, so I'm trying to export it as video (Quicktime) (-but if alternative is better, will try that!).
No matter what options I try, the transparent background always ends up as solid black in the video, either when played in QT Player, or when I convert it (with Media Encoder) to FLVorF4V and import it into InDesign. (InDesign seems unable to import Quicktime directly?)
...but I need the background transparent!?.
Amongst the many ways I've tried, I've tried the 'Help' recommended method:
"Render Video>Quicktime Export: Quicktime Movie> Settings: Animation / Millions of Colors+ / Quality=best, with Render options: straight unmatted
(& I tried all other options here).
    -but no luck.
I've read that InDesign can read PS files, so tried that as well, but only first frame comes in (or is it flattened?) either way, no layers.
Maybe it's my ignorance of CS5; I've been using Photoshop since it was born, but stuck at CS2 for past few years; CS5 is significantly different, and I'm new to video!.
...and am (trying) to learn InDesign & others in the CS5 suite.
Please (if you have the time) can anyone give me a step-by-step, total idiots' guide to the procedure; I just know I'm misunderstanding something, or just not getting someting that I should be doing.
-Whether I need to set up the PS file differently, or the animation pane, or the export video options differently, (or importing into InDesign) ...I'm at a loss.
Sorry, I'm new to threads, so don't know how else to include/post specs., so here they are:
    PC machine,
    Q9550 Intel processor, 8gb Ram,
    terabytes of disk space,
    dual monitors,
Win XP SP3/Win7 dual boot (but using win xp for this),
CS5 Design premium suite, latest updates installed.
(pls. tell me if you need any more info?)
...All this kit and I can't achieve this simple task!!
I might be out later, so please don't think I'm rude if I don't reply immediately to any respondents; I will get back as soon as possible, I do need to solve this, and very much appreciate any help offered.
    Many thanks!

    Hi Noel,
Thanks for your interest, sorry about the delay in me replying; I had to go out.
To answer your questions, perhaps if I describe the way I want to use it in Indesign?
The logo is a hard edged shape, in which colours smoothly and continuously change/animate, which is why I need it to be video, rather than a static image, eg. tiff/png which of course would be simple.
The area around the logo needs to be transparent, as I want to be able to move it around on screen, over changing backgrounds, pictures and graphics (that are themselves animated within InDesign, using motion paths etc.).
I don't want a black or white rectangle to be around the logo, as this would obscure some of what's behind it.
I know this (the logo with transparent background) can (somehow!) be done as a flash video, as similar stuff is used on the web all the time.
For instance, little smiley-faces or graphics (or video!) that bounce up and down in web pages to get your attention; they're usually animated gifs or flash, and they don't have black or white rectangle containing the shape. Not a great example, but you get what I mean?
Does this explain better what I'd like to achieve?
Indesign does provide guidance; it says to import flash videos with an alpha channel (for the transparency)...which is what I've been trying to do!!!
I created the animation in photoshop, but photoshop can't export to flash.
So I have to export to Quicktime movie, then convert that to flash, using the Adobe Media Encoder program.
I think that's where the problem is happening; despite trying all and any of the options to do with alpha channels in this program, I still get black background around the logo video.   ????
Thank you for any help/advice you can offer!

  • Videos encoded with Apple Animation Codec won't play properly in QT7.5

Quick Time version I have installed is 7.5 (149.5). I also have Perian 1.1 and Mpeg2 codec for QT.
All of a sudden, all videos I render using Apple Animation Codec with alpha channel won't properly play in QuickTime, nor in Preview (when you click on .MOV file and press Space). They actually play, but colors are all screwed up and it looks like it's playing only alpha layer. I tried same movies on my work buddy's Mac and everything looks perfet. I also tried importing those videos into Flash, and everything works fine, but when I have to preview them in QT or using Finder's Preview, they look crazy. I can't send any screenshots since this thing happens on my work iMac (new aluminum one, Leopard 10.5.4, all updates installed) and I am at home now.
I tried reinstalling QT but to no avail, nothing changed. I've looked through Library/QuickTime subfolder, and only items I could find were QuickTimeMPEG2.component, Perian.component, ffmpeg.component, and AppleIntermediateCodec.component.
I'm slowly going crazy over here, because nothing I tried worked.
Is there any way of completely removing everything QT related and reinstalling it from the scratch ? Please help!
    Thanks in advance!

Hah, found out what's the problem. It is not my computer, it is not my QuickTime got corrupt. It is QuickTime's bug decoding movie file encoded using following combination of settings:
    Quick Time encoder
    Compression Type: Animation
Depth: Millions of colors+ (alpha channel included)
    Quality: Best
    ParticleIllusion
    Output options
    Save Alpha - enabled
Remove Black bg from RBG channels - if this item is enabled, this is exactly what gives QT problems trying to encode it. I repeat, this option must be enabled in some cases (it removes that nasty black-dirt-looking extra halo glow around the object that already has some kind of glow applied to it). It makes your animation rendered with alpha channel a lot better looking and animation seamlessly blends with any kind of colored background. Well, QT has problems "reading" this format.
In the same time, if you import such animation rendered with this option enabled into Flash, everything looks perfectly fine. It's just QuickTime won't play it properly.
Every single Mac I checked has this same problem, and it's not Mac's problem, it is QuickTime problem.
I have two examples, you can see it yourself:
First one is when black bg is still present in RGB channels (animation looks exactly as it should):
    http://www.sasha-z-creations.com/quicktime/Example_BlackPresent.mov
And second one is when black bg is removed from RGB channels (colors looks weird):
    http://www.sasha-z-creations.com/quicktime/Example_BlackRemoved.mov
I repeat, both examples look exactly the same (great looking) when imported into Flash dev utility.
    Cheers!

  • Please help. When exporting a 720p video using Quicktime Conversion in FCP it saves some extra temporary files to my computer. The file is called ICMMultiPassStorage. This file gets so large that eventually the program and exporting process crashes.

Please help. When exporting a 720p video using Quicktime Conversion in FCP it saves some extra temporary files to my computer. The temporary file it saves is called ICMMultiPassStorage. This file gets so large that eventually the program and exporting process crashes. I have been able to locate the file using GrandPerspective and close out of FCP to delete it. But when I try exporting the movie again it creates the ICMMultiPassStorage file again. I have made sure my scratch disks are set to my external hard drive so I know that isn't the issue. How do I fix this problem so these temporary files are not being stored on my internal hard drive instead of my external? Thanks!

Try exporting the timeline "using current settings" via Make QuickTime Movie, then submit that clip to Compressor for the transcode. This should be faster and less painful.

  • How can I get perfect synch on exported animation video?

I use CS4 on Windows 7. I have a lot of RAM and a big CPU. And yet, I am having trouble getting the exported video from my animated cartoon FLA to match the good motion/synch on the SWF. The FLA is sized 1920x1080. I have been exporting it down to 640x480 with various export settings for video and sound. The product slows down the motion at early moments like a scene shift tween, while the sound moves along as scheduled. Simply put, I want my MOV file's animation to perfectly match that of the SWF.

I tried that with the first sound file. When I did, all the other sound files began playing prematurely on the SWF. Should change all of them to stream, then playback?

  • Problems with exporting audio music video to QuickTime

In iMovie I made this audio music video, combining music with photos and audiovisual clips. In iMovie I muted the original sounds of the photos and audiovisual clips. Yet after exporting the audio music video to QuickTime, parts of the original soundtrack can still be heard, some of it in the right place, some are scattered out at random. I have exported audio music videos from iMovie to QuickTime before - consisting of music and audiovisual clips - and then I had not theses issues. Can somebody explain to me what I can do to mute the original soundtrack in QuickTime? I don't want this original soundtrack to spoil the audio music video when I upload it to Youtube.
    Thanks in advance

There is a bug in iMovie 09 that produces weird audio artifacts when you use speed changes (fast or slow motion) that do not conform to the preset tick marks of 25%, 50%, 100%, 200%, 400%, 800%, etc.
If you are using custom speed percentages like 58% or 139%, change them to one of the presets, and that will fix the sound.

  • Flash crash when i export my animation as a video and get stuck at 64%

When i export my animation for a video it makes a swf file but it renders till 64% and get stuck and flash freeze and close, how can i fix this?

When you select to use RAM or disk to render with, if you're using RAM try selecting to use DISK instead and make sure you have enough space available for the final file. If you're exporting anything near HD size with no compression then you should have potentially hundreds or thousands of GIGS available for your animation.

  • Apple Animation & Major FCP Bugs.  Help?!?!

I'm really getting frustrated with Final Cut Pro. I'm a long time Adobe Premiere user on the PC and recently started using a Mac workstation with FCP. It seemed intuative enough but it's been nothing but frustration on what seems to be an extremely simple task.
I've got a bunch of material captured using the Apple Animation codec - 1024x640, 15 frames/sec, non-interlaced, square pixels, along with a 44.1 Khz stereo soundtrack. They are .mov files. This is a capture from a desktop recording program called iShowU. The footage plays great in Quicktime and looks awesome.
I need to bring these into FCP and do some very simple cuts-only editing then re-export. I'm being hit with various frustrating problems. Please someone help with any of these - I don't even know where to start.
I'm running FCP 5.1.4, on a new MacPro quad 2.66 with 5GB ram and the stock video card, fast 7200rpm SATA hard drive with plenty of space.
    _*Timeline Playback / Space Bar:*_
When I hit the space bar the play head should play - yes? This is how I edit. The space bar function is totally intermittent. Sometimes it plays, somtimes it doesn't, sometimes it plays then stops after 1/2 second, sometimes it plays for 7 seconds then just randomly stops, sometimes it's playing and I can't stop it by hitting space so I have to hit multiple times then go back and re-position the play head. Arugh!! I've got the latest updates for Apple Pro Apps Interface Support or whatever that is - hoped that would fix it but no. Premiere always worked just fine in this function. I've tried holding the space bar longer or shorter - nothing seems to work. I want a simple tap-start, and tap-stop operation here to position my play head for cutting. Help?!?!
    _*Render Previews: Total Confusion:*_
Apparently FCP won't just play these clips native without having to "re-render" them to play in the window while editing. This is an apple codec so that just baffles me why it wouldn't play them straight up, but oh well. So here's what I do...
    1. Create a new sequence and in Sequence Settings make sure I set frame size, aspect, QuickTime Video Settings to compressor: Animation, set the audio correct - everything to exactly match my source footage.
    2. I drag some clips on to the sequence.
    - Sometimes they play right off without any apparent need to render.
    - Sometimes I get that beep - beep - beep that the audio needs rendered
    - Sometimes the preview window reads "Unrendered", but if I zoom in to say 400%, now all of a sudden it plays - cropped of course, but it plays. Zoom back to where I can see the whole window, and it shows Unrendered again.
    - This doesn't seem to corespond to the red bar over the footage in the sequence. One sequence I've been messing with has a red bar on top, a grey bar right under it, and it plays fine - audio and video both play fine when previewing.
I just can't find any pattern to what plays or what won't.
    3. I understand these clips should probably be pre-rendered so I dumped a bunch into a sequence, selected all of them, then went to Sequence > Render Selection > Both, then waited a LONG LONG LONG time for the render to complete.
That was okay, but then I dragged the same exact clips into another sequence and it showed them as NOT RENDERED. How frustrating!
Now it appears I have to have a perfectly good rendered copy on my drive, plus re-render a preview copy of each clip for each sequence I use it in which means now doubling, trippling, quadrupling the amount of drive space and time needed to just slice these clips together and be done with it.
Obviously I'm doing something all wrong - FCP was supposed to be a "better" program and so far it's just dumb every way I look at it. I read in the manual about this stuff but it wasn't much help - it pretty well repeats what's obvious by reading the menu headings.
    _*Please Help:*_
Can someone please give me small little steps to get this done? I'd like to create a fresh new project, do whatever to import the footage, do whatever to setup a sequence, do whatever to make FCP happy enough to preview the stuff live while I edit, and allow me to re-use the same content in multiple sequences without having to re-render it every time.
Maybe I can do that offline edit stuff? Can someone walk me through that? Maybe I can import it all and make FCP think it's regular SD video, let me edit, then use the real footage when I export via H.264 at the end. I've never had to mess with that "offline editing" stuff because Premiere always handled anything I threw at it without complaint.
Much thanks in advance. I'm about to kick this computer out a window right now.

    Jim Cookman wrote:
Well then, let's work backwards: what is your final deliverable? What is the setting that most closely resembles that?
And as noted above, use compressor to do the transcode-- you can do it in a batch while you go out and weed your tomatoes.
(H.264 is a delivery codec and not suitable for editing.)
My final deliverable is 1024x640, 15fps, non-interlaced, H.264 Quicktime. As you note, H.264 is not for editing, I get that.
Using compressor to transcode is a great idea and a big help - but what should I transcode to? I was hoping for a specific suggestion. I'll use whatever codec will work - I'm not picky. As stated, it just needs to maintain it's details as much as possible in the final output.
It would seem that to render from Apple Animation to (some other codec) then render that material out as H.264 would be a bad idea as it would create two rounds of compression, but that seems to be the solution - so what should (some other codec) be? I can do trail and error all week and see what works but I was hoping someone would have some specifics settings to try?
And tweaking the various quality and data rate settings of that destination codec brings up even more variables - getting something compressed enough to edit and yet still with enough good data to represent a clean output.
Again, this is a little frustrating as I'm not trying to produce a feature film here - it's just some software demos with some audio narration, I just need to do some straight cuts editing to cut around the dead spaces in the narration and menu hunting. Then export that cut down sequence as a quicktime in the smallest file size possible while maintaining the large 1024x640 screen size. It really is a pretty simple task that's turned into a real hassle. I realize the screen size isn't exactly standard but this should be a fairly straight forward process.
I do very much appreciate everyone's help. I can't thank you enough. I feel if I just knew what settings to punch in or what codec to use or what order to import stuff or whatever, I'd be done with the project by now.
    Thanks.

    Symptoms
Final Cut Pro may quit unexpectedly when you export using QuickTime Conversion if you choose Flash Video (FLV) from the Format menu.
    Products Affected
Final Cut Pro 6.x, Adobe Creative Suite 3 Flash Video Encoder
    Resolution
This can happen if you use the Adobe Creative Suite 3 Flash Video Encoder and Final Cut Pro together. This issue does not occur with the Flash Video Encoder in Adobe Creative Suite 4. To work around the issue:
Choose File > Export > QuickTime Movie.
Be sure to enable Make Movie Self-Contained.
Open the exported movie in QuickTime Player.
Export the movie to Flash from QuickTime Player.

Hi I'm exporting video from final cut into IDVD but having problems as every video is pixelated, i need help in telling me which is are the best formats and settings to set it to, we are mostly doing wedding videos, and we want the quality of the dvd to be good in a tv and on my 30'' apple screen, any help is much appreciated, this forum is great...thank you all...
    Message was edited by: Bphoto

Use *Export/Quicktime Movie* (not Export/Using Quicktime Conversion): then you can select whether to Make Movie Self-Contained or not. Quality is the same, but if movie is self-contained you can move it to another Mac for burning; on the other hand it takes more time and disk space.
The resulting .mov file may be imported into iDVD, which will take care to compress it to MPEG2 before burning.
Note that this workflow is good for creating DVDs with iDVD. But the resulting DVD is best watched on a real (interlaced) TV, not on a (progressive) Mac/PC monitor.
