Quicktime 10 won't play FCE exported .mov files?

I have edited several videos using Final Cut Express and exported them as .mov files to my desktop. Now, because I have a small internal hard drive (128GB SSD), I copy all of my raw footage to an external hard drive and then delete the files from my Mac HD. But, I keep the finished videos on my desktop. When I try to play the video while the hard drive is plugged in, QuickTime opens and plays the video just fine. But, when the external hard drive is NOT connected and I try to play the video (from my Mac HD), QuickTime won't open it nor play it. If I absolutely have to, I will carry the external HD around with me so I can play my videos, but I was just wondering if it had to do with the codec (H.264) my OS (10.6.8) QuickTime X or FCE (4.1). Can anybody help me?

At this point one can only make guesses as to a solution since you have not really provided any useful information.
I have edited several videos using Final Cut Express and exported them as .mov files to my desktop.
For future reference, an MOV file is any compressed data in an MOV file container. Data can be any compression format compatible with the system configuration on which the file was made—to include both Apple QT native compatible codecs and "Pro" app installed codecs to third party codecs like WMV, DivX, XviD, MPEG-2, etc. In order to eliminate codec problems, in the future please indicate the specific codecs involved.
This would normally be the playback description of a "QT Reference" file. Basically, a reference file is a very small/quickly created file that tells the player to play data that is actually contained in one or more other files. However, since the reference file cannot be played if the main data file(s) are not accessible (i.e., when the external drive is disconnected), you should also be getting an error message telling you it cannot find referenced data and you have yet to confirm this here.
If I absolutely have to, I will carry the external HD around with me so I can play my videos, but I was just wondering if it had to do with the codec (H.264) my OS (10.6.8) QuickTime X or FCE (4.1).
Once again, since we don't know what form of compression was used or what settings were used, it is impossible to determine if there are any secondary problems to be delt with here. In most cases, a high date rate/low compression format is used for import/editing purposes and the final file is "exported" to a specific compression format depending on its specific target use. In most cases, H.264/AAC is the best compression format for "distibution" since it has a very wide range of settings which allow you to adjust the file size and quality aspects to suit any specific device or target use and to do so as a "standalone" (re-compressed) files which are independent of any data in source/other files.

  • Quicktime won't play audio of .MOV files

Quicktime displays the video portion of .mov files from my digital camera, but the audio sounds like a (very loud) jackhammer, and seems to hang. Ditto with other viewers (irfanview, etc.) that depend on Quicktime.
However, Nero ShowTime plays the same files just fine.
It's as if quicktime didn't fully install codecs, although uninstall/reinstall sequence didn't help, and no messages indicating any problems.
PS... it used to work great (months ago) -- no clue how it was broken.

I'm experiencing the same problem, with the only difference that my qt has no video on one account, and behaves normally in another account. I compared the versions, but the seem to be the same.

  • Exporting to power point -- won't play some animations/.mov files

I had to export a keynote presentation to power point for a co worker.
When I open the file on a PC, I get a message saying that "PowerPoint was unable to display some of the text, images, or objects in the file because they have become corrupted. Affected slides have been replaced by blank slides in the presentation and it is not possible to recover the lost information." There is only one slide that has been unaffected -- one or two have the barest text in them, and that's only partial. The rest are completely blank.
In addition, the export created a folder with some .mov files in it. I'm guessing that at least some of these files are for an animation in the slides.
Can anyone tell me what is going on -- has anyone else gotten this message? It's PowerPoint 2007 if that makes any difference.

To begin with, exporting KN to PP, or vice-versa, often results in an inexact translation. Sometimes there is no noticable difference, but there are often problems, ranging from small to insoluble, for any number of reasons. In addition, even with the same app, PP, for instance, one on a Mac and the other on a PC, going from one OS to another sometimes results in problems. And finally, just plain transporting a presentation from one machine to another, even with the same OS, can be a problem.
It seems you have at least two problems, which should be tackled in order, and the first one is KN to PP on your Mac. Does this play fine, or are there problems? This must be answered and resolved, if possible, before going on to the PP/Mac > PP/Windows or transport part.

  • My audio won't play on my .mov file

At one time the audio was working on this .mov file that I composed, now it is not. I went into the settings of the file and verified there were both video and audio tracks. What else can I do to somehow fix this?
    Thanks.

Your audio settings may have been changed.
    1. Open Audio MIDI Setup (/Applications/Utilities/), then check the Audio Output setting.
    2. Change the Audio Output setting to 44100.0 Hz.
    3. Quit Audio MIDI Setup.

  • Quicktime won't play my .mov files since I upgraded to Mavericks.

Quicktime won't play my .mov files, even those from an iPhone, since I installed Mavericks.  "Tell Me More" doesn't tell me anything about a solution.  Any suggestions?

    What do I do?
Frankly, if you have deleted the original movie clips from your camera/camcorder and iPhoto, then it sounds as if you are up the proverbial creek without a paddle and there is nothing further that you can do.
    Some facts:
For some reason, the movieclips are awful small (13-30 KB).
    640 x 480
    Codecs: H.264, AAC
While these facts are of little value without file duration information, as you yourself have already noted, the file sizes quoted are extremely small. A typical VGA H.264/AAC file of reasonable quality would normally have a combined total data rate in the 700 to 1,700 Kbps range depending on specific settings, profile, and level of the encoding software and could be even higher or lower depending on the quality levels required. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that files in the 13 to 30 KB range only contain 104 to 240 Kbs and either have durations measured in fractions of seconds or do not actually contain enough data to be played. (E.g., the video data may be missing or the file is corrupted.) Thus, it is most likely that something was wrong with the workflow used to "export" your files to the external drive and when you ignored the fact that the files were not playing correctly, you closed the door on anything that you could do when you deleted the source files. (I.e., the normal workflow here is to copy the entire iPhoto library to the external drive, switch libraries, confirm the new library is working properly and only then delete the boot drive copy of the iPhoto library.)
OBS: When I try to convert the files into something else (AVI, MP4 whatever) either it comes with an error, nothing happens or the converted file wont open. This happens with various convert-programs.
If the data in the files is missing, then there is nothing to be converted by any application.

Both the AVI and the MOV file extensions refer to the file container and not the compressed data the file contains. Both are generic file containers in that each may contain any valid combination of audio and/or video data that is compatible with the codec component configuration of the system on which the file was created. On the other hand, whether a file is playback compatible, conversion compatible, and/or edit compatible depends on the data actually contained in the file container. So, you are basically dealing with two separate issues here—the container and what is inside it.
Basically, if you want to make your files ediit compatible with iMovie, you must change your file container to one that is acceptable to iMovie and convert the data to edit compatible audio and/or video compression formats as may be necessary. The best approach is to determine what codecs were actually used to create the original AVI files and add them to your system if possible. In most cases a codec package like Perian can be added to your system's codec component configuration to may the AVI file playable. Once they are playable, in the QT 7 app then they can be chnged or converted to file types and compression formats that can be edited in iMovie. (While Perian handles most codecs commonly used to create AVI files, it does not handle all possibilities and, while the Perian codec package still works under cureent Mac OS versions, its development group has decided to drop further development/support of the package.)
Background: AVI is a file container originally developed by Microsoft back in 1992 but for which official support was discontinued about 11 years. Despite its limitations, Windows users still tend to use this file based on its open source ease of use and generic nature, thus, making its use so popular that most users are unwilling to switch to more modern but less generic file types. Since some AVI legacy compression formats have never been transcoded for the Mac or use beyond OS 9 or OS X PPC platforms, it is often important to know what specific compression formats are contained in the AVI file to know which codecs to add to your system and which not to add in order to avoid possible codec conflicts.
You can use many different converters to convert AVI files to iMovie edit compatible files. Most third-party apps contain their own buit-in codecs which do not relay on the Mac codec component configuration. Free ones, like HandBrake, usually have limited conversion capabilities while those that have more varied outputs are usually commercial in nature and will cost you additional cash. QT 7 Pro or the free MPEG Streamclip app allow you to access you own system's component configuration and use any available codec component like DV, AIC, MPEG-4, H.264, Photo JPEG, etc.—all of which are iMovie compatible for editing purposes—but only after making the AVI file QT 7 player compatible.
In order to determine what compression formats wewre used in your AVI files you can
    1) Try checking the Finder "Info" window,
    2) Use the "Inspector", "Media Info", or "Properties" window of any player app that will open the file, or
    3) Use a general media utility app like "MediaInfo" to read the file characteristics.

  • Video/Movie won't play when exported as a PDF.

    Hello,
I am creating an interactive PDF using CS5 to display video work. Unfortunately, the video won't play when exported as an interactive PDF, I am just left with blank space. I find this very odd as it plays in preview and also when exported as a SWF but that file type is unsuitable for the project.
Initially when I exported it I got this message: "One or more of the interactive elements are clipped in ways the pdf files can't reproduce...." Obviously, I have ensured the file is resized correctly and also tried .mov, .mp4 and also .flv file types with no success. I have also checked the simple things like ensuring all the right boxes are ticked when I export.
This is not the first time I have embedded video but it is the first time without success despite following the same pattern. Any ideas as to why this would be and how to fix it?
    Thank you,
    Laura

Use Flv or f4v format, after you have placed video into your layout, make sure that you don´t scale or crop video frame at all.
(Whren you File > Place a video, you will have a loaded cursor with video icon. Click the empty spot on page with loaded cursor, don´t draw a rectangle or click on the top of some exisiting frame)
It´s important that you have your video in 100% encoded size in your layout. If you need to scale or crop it, load that video into Adobe Media Encoder and do it there, and re-encode the video to the correct size and shape aftrwards.
Adobe Media Encoder ships with InDesign.

  • Since upgrade Quicktime won't play ".qtl" files

I got the notice a few months ago that I needed to upgrade Quicktime, so I did and am now running it at 7.1.6. However, since the upgrade, I can't play any of Quicktime's HD trailers or any movie files ending in ".qtl". ".mov", ".mp4" and others work fine, just not ".qtl". Also, every time I try to play a trailer from Apple's QT Trailer page, the page just uploads with "?" over the QT icon. Whether I'm trying to play a HD trailer or not, the result is the same. Any ideas?

The Yahoo pages make for lousy viewing. The SD files have been converted to Flash Video (.flv) and the HD versions use the QuickTime Media Link format.
I tested the Silver Surfer pages and had mixed results. The "exclusive" version .qtl file worked (after closing the first window opened and a double click on the downloaded .qtl file). The "Theatrical Trailer" HD versions failed to load any content.
The .qtl files are just simple text files (XML) and you can view them in any text editor to extract the "real" URL to the media. Copy all of the text in the quote marks and you'll get a URL that looks like this:
    http://playlist.yahoo.com/makeplaylist.dll?sid=37986432&embedded=yes&t=mov&br=27 00&s=0&start=0&end=&afr=0&nodeid=2964002&d=35&tz=&pg=NTYzMDg4MDQ1NDY2YzkwMG&auth id=&sl=35&so=%252FYahoo%252FMovies%252FClips%252FFantastic%2BFour%2BRise%2BOf%2B The%2BSilver%2BSurfer%252Fwheelsequence%2528HD%2529&tcode=&sdm=web&pt=rd
Sorry for the huge URL. Blame it on Yahoo. (Copy do not click all of the text above)
Paste that in the Open URL feature of QuickTime Player and wait for the file to download.

  • Exporting .Mov files at 24fps for Final Cut Pro 5

I work at an animation production house and we're trying to export .mov files from QT 7.1.2 at 24fps so they won't have to be rendered in a FCP project which is a 720p project with a frame size of 1280x720, we're experimenting with two codecs. We're using Motion Jpeg A and Photo Jpeg, selecting 24fps but for some reason they import into FCP 5 at 10fps. It's as though QT isn't outputting accurate 24fps .mov files. When I export .mov files from FCP they import back into FCP without having to be rendered. What's the difference between the ones exported from QT vs. the .mov files exported from FCP. We're using the exact same settings and files....? The reason we need to use QT to do this is because it needs to be a somewhat automated process (lots of stills to work with) and our PA's are working on Windows with QT only.

You should post your inquiry at Final Cut Pro section for better support. Anyway, Final Cut Pro does not always recognize the frame rate correctly, depending on which application (and possibly which codec) you used to compress video. For example, Snapz Pro X and Adobe After Effects don't get along with Final Cut Pro in this respect. Furthermore, compressing video in H.264 will be a bad idea. So simply adjust the size of Canvas so that it won't cover the whole screen. In this way, you can even replay video on Canvas and even send it for final production.
