Quicktime + 5.1 output + MIDI

Hi,
I'm fighting with Quicktime to output 5.1 audio AND a MIDI signal via USB simultaneously. I've got an unusual AV presentation set-up that requires HD projection, 5.1 audio, AND a MIDI signal to control a servo shutter device which blacks out the video projector signal at synchronised moments in the presentation. Currently I've got it all to work from a Mac Mini over optical using Perian, with the sub-woofer channel going to an analogue input on the shutter controller. I'd prefer using MIDI to control the shutter for a number of reasons, but I don't know where to start - it's already so tricky just to get 5.1 out of the Quicktime / Mac Mini combo. My most basic question is whether it's possible to playback a file that's Quicktime HD (DVI) + 5.1 (OPTICAL) + MIDI (USB) all out of a Mac Mini without additional hardware. I've successfully used Perian previously, but without the additional MIDI output.

Quicktime as default downmixes the audio to stereo, that's why you can't hear your video in Surround. However, there is this tool - Perian - which allows you to change output format (EG: stereo, multi-channel output).
You can get it from here: http://perian.org/

  • I Can't output MIDI to USB hardware in QT Win

I have a midi instrument (Player Piano) connected to my pc using a USB MIDI device. Quicktime will not output MIDI to my device. Both WMP v11 and Real Player will play the piano perfectly. My goal is to use iTunes to play my MIDI files on my Piano. Please Help

midi tracks are already "armed" when you select them, so there is no need to push the "R" button again if its already red. This would infact make it so you DONT hear your midi. But oddly enough you can still record in this mode, and though you dont hear what your recording, it will playback when you're done, so this cant be your problem.
So, you are able to hear audio tracks in logic, correct? So I can assume the monitoring side of your system is working fine. You can also record midi, so thats working fine.
Are you trying to trigger an external synth? Perhaps its midi/audio is not hooked up? If it is, perhaps your midi keyboard is sending data from the wrong midi channel?
Try opening a logic instrument like the EFM1 or something, and try to play your midi keyboard (making sure the red R is on). Can you hear any sound?

  • Quicktime 7 and Audio MIDI bugs in 10.3.9

I posted this in the 10.3 audio forum and am trying here as well
I am having overloaded CPU issues that won't allow playback in Pro Tools 6.8 M-Powered and made Reaktor 5 unusable. Reason Adapted cannot access core MIDI. This issue has grown worse as the day has gone by. I have been trying to trace down what the problem is and from what I can see, Quicktime 7 (.0.1 -.0.2 - .0.3) has caused major audio bugs in 10.3.9 OS. The first problems I had was when I first installed QT7. So here is a list of symptoms.
I can't open MIDI set up in the Audio MIDI set up.
I get popping and high pitch oscillation in Pro Tools and Reaktor.
The oscillation is also audible from inside the computer (Yes, I know this is the CPU making the noise)
I cannot get playback in Pro Tools because of CPU overload or buffer size is to small (I have the buffer maxed)
I cannot use and external MIDI instruments due to crash of the set up
Digidesign (Pro Tools) just posted issue very similar to mine last week.
Native Instruments (Reaktor) tech support says there is an issue with g4 Power Books and the CPU but they aren't sure what is causing it.
Just a side note, On my G4 Desktop, All is well with QT6.5 and 10.3.9
On my G5 desktop All is well with QT 7.0 and 10.4.1
I am using G4 (Ti) Power Book that is almost 3 years old
    512 RAM
    1GZ CPU
    a M-Audio Firewire 1814
    a Lacie D2 160GB in the firewire800 port
I really think this is a Quicktime bug. If any one has figured out anything or wants to dig into this further....... I wish there was an un-installer for QT7.0.3 so I could go back to 6.5.2 and all would be fine. Below is the crash report of the Audio MIDI set up

Thank you Kirk for your reply and the solution. I couldn't find the .smil format option under Sys Prefs/QuickTime/Advanced MIME Settings, but then I realized I didn't install Real Player after the OS X upgrade from 10.3.9 to 10.4.7. I installed Real Player and restarted the system. The speech file that was not working came alive with the Real Player icon intact.
I really appreciate your help and I look forward to reading your book on QuickTime in the near future.

  • How to get QuickTime Plugin to play .mid files?

I have quicktime Plugin installed. It works for playing video files but I can't get it to play .mid files in browser. Firefox asks me to download the file first, even though through options -> application types, I have set it to use the QuickTime plugin.
    I have firefox 22 and quicktime 7.7.4

Also through MIME settings in QuickTime I have set QuickTime to be associated with .mid and .midi files.

  • Quicktime render errors-output module fails

    Hi everyone,
I'm having more and more trouble lately rendering out a simple uncompressed (codec = none) 1280x720 or 1920 x 1080 Quicktime.
This used to be my standard output format, ready for further encoding.
But now almost every render to uncompressed Quicktime stops at a random moment and give me the "Output failed" error message.
What the heck changed when going from CS6 to CC ??????  Anyone experience anything similar?

  • Quicktime on Mavericks outputs stuttering audio.

Also some of my video files need "converting" before they play on quicktime. Thus I'm using VLC for now. No stuttering problems with iTunes sound or audio. When will Quicktime be fixed? And is anyone else having these problems?

Same problem. I am an animator and director. All but a small handfull of my video files "convert" when I try to open them. The messed up part is that they are already .mov files. Then it wants to save it again? Do you people know how many of these I have? Are you trying to sell more Hard Drives or something. Fix this quickly, I'm on a deadline and don't want to have to convert 100s of shots and re-import them into my editing software. This is a total waist of time. This is Apple software, it should work seamlessly with OSX.

  • Mac OS error -208 when opening MIDI files in Quicktime Pro

Quicktime no longer plays MIDI files. it used to. now i get the Mac OS error -208 claiming the file is corrupted. but i can play the file on a PC, and other people receiving the files by email can open them (though a few other Mac owners are now also having trouble for the first time).
this problem started about two weeks ago. i did nothing different to my machine (MacBook pro), and wonder if a background system update is to blame.
i uninstalled Quicktime and reinstalled it. no luck. any ideas?

here's some further clarification, provided by John Hetland, who worked out the fix:
    1. The MIDI analyzer I used is a cool freeware program midi2txt.exe from
    http://www.gnmidi.com/
    2. When I ran midi2txt with the -error switch and the name of the MIDI file,
it said something like "Warning: 21 bytes of garbage at end of file." It
turned out that the MIDI file was made in fixed-length records, and there
was space left over in the last record. This situation is simply ignored by
most players, but the current version of QuickTime apparently doesn't know
what to do if the file is not EXACTLY the length needed for the MIDI codes.
    3. I can't give instructions for fixing the error because what I fixed was
not any MIDI file; I fixed the program I wrote that generated the flawed
MIDIs. But if someone should encounter this very problem in a MIDI from some
other source, and that someone has expertise in file manipulation, one
should look for hex 'FF2F00' in the last record and delete everything that
    follows it.

  • MIDI files don't play correctly in QuickTime

I believe this is a bug in QuickTime, but since I don't expect the typical QuickTime user to understand this, and because I am generating the MIDI files with Logic, I thought this forum is an appropriate play to post this.
I'm producing some MIDI files that I would like people to easily be able to playback without installing special software. So that means using QuickTime.
The problem is QuickTime does not handle MIDI program changes properly. I put together a simple test case, it's just the notes C D E F and before each note it changes the MIDI program to 0, 10, 20, 30 respectively. So every note should sound different. When I play it with QuickTime, on either OS X or Windows, it does not play correctly. It seems the program change messages lag behind by one note.
To make sure this wasn't a problem with the MIDI file, I have tried playing it with:
    * a hardware synthesizer
    * SimpleSynth (a freeware program)
    * AU DLS Synth (using Max/MSP to play the MIDI)
    * WinAmp
    * Windows Media Player
In all these cases, the playback occurs exactly like I would expect. So... QuickTime can't handle program change messages? Has anyone else experienced problems with this? Anyone know of a workaround? How about some easy alternatives to MIDI playback on Mac for people who don't have Logic?
I tried to find a workaround: I made the program changes occur well before the note-on, but that didn't help. I also tried sending multiple program changes to try to force QuickTime to listen. That didn't work either.
I have QuickTime 7.5.5. If someone else can verify this is a QuickTime bug, I will submit a bug report to Apple.
The file I used for testing is here: http://stashbox.org/262021/program-change-test.mid

    Adam,
I can confirm this behavior on both Tiger 10.4.11 (QT 7.4.5) and Leopard, (QT 7.5.5).
I messed around with it and almost had it working by using a +30-tic offset on all events. The problem seems to be a good sized buffer used by the QT synth. If there is a solution I think it will be an initial offset by --- number of tics.
I'd also separate the program change and note event by at least a couple of tics.
Like this example using a 60-tic offset.
    1 1 1 60 PG
    1 1 1 62 Note on
    2 2 2 60 PG
    2 2 2 62 Note on
Good luck, let us know how it goes.
Back in the day I used to do MIDI files for commercial distribution, I know how
frustrating it can be. Trying to get consistent sound over a variety of GM/XG synths.

  • Audio Firewire Output - Yosemite

Updated iMac 9,1  (early 2009) to Yosemite.  Now my firewire audio output to my PreSonus mixer is wacky.  I can not get iTunes, Spotify to send audio to the PreSonus via firewire even though the interface is a choice in Audio Midi Setup and in Sound Preferences.  And yet  Logic Pro X and Quicktime 7 both output normally through the firewire port!   I've reset parameter ram, reinstalled Presonus drivers,  replaced the PreSonus com. files.
If I unplug the firewire cable to the PreSonus mixer and plug it back in I'm able to hear about 2 seconds of audio before it cuts out again.
    Any suggestions?
Sorry, this belongs in the Yosemite Community, but I can't seem to delete it from this Maverick community.

Do you have Audio Hijack Pro?
    <http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/>
You can use it to hijack Safari (or the system output, to get everything), then in the "Effects" tab, add "Gain" from "4FX Effect". You can drag the gain control to anywhere on the screen, then minimize the main Audio Hijack Pro window.

  • Can I use iTune to serve Midi music to a Midi device?

I have been using Quicktime player to send MIDI music to my digital piano. The problem is that I don't know how to set up a playlist on Quicktime. QT may not have such feature or perhaps I can switch to Microsoft's media player to use the playlist. IIRC, MP supports playlist.
I notice that iTune can take my MIDI files and it can playback the song via the computer speakers. It would be ideal to use iTune to organize my MIDI collection, only if I can use iTune to send the MIDI output to my digital piano.
Quicktime has a preference setting to pick the device for MIDI output. Does iTune has the same settings? I failed to find it.
I can play the MIDI to the digital piano, but no playlist.
I can play the MIDI using iTune playlist, but no piano.
    I want both.
How do I solve this problem?

If you want to move personal data, in this case music, from an old computer to a new computer use the methods in this Apple KB article: <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US>.
Also, before selling the old computer you need to erase the HDD and put the original OS back on it, that came with the computer. Be sure you have all your personal data backed up and transfered to the new computer before doing this.

  • How do I hook my Keyboard up to my computer to use it as a MIDI controller?

Ok, I'm new to MACS and new to LOGIC. I just installed logic and all of its components on my IMAC. OSX 10.6.3 Once I installed everything, I tried to hook up my electric piano to use it as a MIDI controller. Mind you, I am also completely new to MIDI. My Piano is a KORG sp-300. I used an Alesis Audio Link USB- MIDI cable to connect my keyboard directly to a usb port in my MAC. I hooked up the midi side of the connector to the midi in and out on my keyboard, and plugged in the usb side to the computer. I then went to the Audio Midi set up, and looked in the midi studio, and there was the USB2MIDI(which is associated with the Alesis cord, and not my Korg piano) and the IAC driver from MAC. I checked so that both are online, and didn't change any of the other settings. I did a test set up, but when I played notes on the keyboard nothing happened.
So now when I open Logic, or garage band for that matter, it doesn't recognize that I have a midi controller hooked up. When I look in midi preferences in garageband, it says that there are 2 midi devices detected. In logic it says that there is no input or output.
I read the manual for LOGIC and for my Korg, and I am lost. Korg says that it transmits on 1 channel, automatically set to channel 1 if not adjusted, and receives on 16. If I am correct, right now I am not interested in receiving, only transmitting.
At this point, I just want to select a software instrument in Logic, play my Korg, and see notes(or MIDI data) appear in the arrange area. I don't know what's going on, but again, I am completely lost.
Could someone please help me here? Am I missing an obvious step? Like I said, I am new to all of this, so please let me know if you have any idea how to get my midi controller to work. It says in the Korg manual that it can be used as a controller, or a multitimbral tone generator. And I did switch the Local Off.
By the way, who would be best to call to solve this issue. MAC? Sweetwater(where I bought the Alesis cord, and Logic)? Or Korg?
Please let me know if you have any helpful advice.
    Thanks,
    Tristan

The Mac reads the USB cable as a midi device, but not the keyboard that I am trying to use as a controller. I have tried it with my korg sp 300 and with my Nord Electro 2.
    Thoughts?

    Tristan...
This is what you have, correct?
    http://www.alesis.com/usbmidicable
    This from Alesis..
"The AudioLink Series USB cable receives and outputs MIDI signal thanks to its internal interface. The USB-MIDI Cable connects plug-and-play to your Mac or PC for an all-in-one USB-MIDI solution."
Notice, -internal interface-. What you have is a simple USB MIDI Interface. Most MIDI interfaces are USB.
My point is (was), MIDI OUT of the Korg goes to the connector marked MIDI IN on the Alesis, those new to MIDI often get this wrong.

  • Converting existing MIDI loops

    Hi,
I have a bunch of previously acquired and used MIDI loops, which I should like to import and use in GarageBand. When double-clicked, the MIDI loops open in QuickTime, with which I can export to an AIF file - but these are full-lenth, 3-4 minute long AIF sound files repeating the 5-10 second loop over and over.
How can I reliably extract a single cycle to save as an AIF file and import to GarageBand? Preferably, as I have a boatload of these, I am looking for a utility/script that can do this in batch mode...
    Thanks, Tristan
    G4 PowerBook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi,
...well, that didn't work either: dragging those files over onto the track portion of the window (either an existing instrument or the empty area) did not turn the cursor into "+"; upon releasing, the files would jump back to the Finder window.
That got me thinking, that perhaps these were somehow not proper MIDI files (they came from a cross-platform program). Upon opening one of them with QuickTime, I exported it as "Music to Standard MIDI", and that file indeed can be dropped into the track, and creates its "Software instrument" and the full repetitive track. The created file has the type "Midi", creator "????" and UTI "dyn.ah62d4rv4ge8044pe"; and, just changing the type of the original file from "MooV" to "Midi" doesn't make it work.
From this, I can now indeed cut down to a desired cycle, and save that in GB's library. So, I now do have a method for importing these files:
    (1) Open in QuickTime & export as standard MIDI file.
    (2) Drag to GB's track, cut and save the result.
    (3) Tweak the velocity information, since the setting obtained is disproportionate: the sounds of lesser volume are barely audible.
    (4) Repeat. ...great...
Well, that answers my original question; thanks for insisting that GB should be able to use the (standard) MIDI files.
    Thanks, Tristan
